Ook fascinatie voor de wetenschap, van bijvoorbeeld nanotechnologie tot statistieken, is een terugkerend thema. Die wetenschappelijke kennis wordt echter niet slaafs verbeeld maar bovenal met verwondering bekeken. De schilderijen overstijgen vaak het begrip; ze raken weliswaar aan onderzoek maar onderstrepen, niet zelden zonder humor, de onmogelijkheid en nutteloosheid van al die kennis. De wetenschap, die licht probeert te brengen in gebieden die grijs en on-
bekend zijn, heeft lang niet altijd overal een antwoord op. Vooral kunst onttrekt zich bijna per definitie aan een eenduidige en allesomvattende verklaring. Kunst schuurt, raakt aan en laat kantelen. Het zinvolle toeval wordt gekoesterd. En zo ontstaan nieuwe ideeën, leiden associaties tot innovatie. Juist in tijden dat stagnatie op de loer ligt, kan het zinvolle toeval van de kunst een uitweg bieden. De groei in de Gouden Eeuw is dan ook het verhaal van handel én kunst. Though they relate to scientific knowledge, they comment on the irrelevance and futility of it all, often with a touch of humour. Though science aims to enhance our understanding of the world, it cannot provide all the answers. Art in particular, by its very nature, defies any unequivocal and comprehensive definition. Art chafes, art touches, art turns things upside down. It fosters fortuitous quirks of fate. New ideas are born and new trains of thought lead to innovation.
With the looming prospect of stagnation in our society, art’s aptitude for making fortuitous discoveries holds out the hope of redemption. Considered in this light, growth in the Dutch Golden Age is the story not just of commerce but also of art. Also striking is a trend towards small-format works, some of which would literally fit into the palm of a hand. And time and again the jury found itself having to decide whether a given work was actually a painting or a drawing. The distinction between the two art forms is becoming increas-
