A Message From Gerry Hecht, TBJ Religious School Director L'Shanah Tovah and Welcome Back To School! We will start the new school year, for the year 5784, on Sunday, September 10 at 9:30am. Also, the school community will help celebrate Inez Grenier's Bat Mitzvah on Friday, September 1. What naches! The plans for the new school year are taking shape. We will be celebrating all of the haggim, or holidays, starting with an outdoor youth/school service under the tent for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Student participation is a must. Then we will celebrate Sukkot with services and snacks in the sukkah. Simchat Torah will be a big school and community celebration as we rewind the Torah scrolls and start all over again. The school has planned a field trip to the Jewish Museum in January, and for high schoolers, a four-day venture to Washington, D.C. with the Religious Action Center. We will also be "sharing" some festivals with our Orange County temples both in our building and "on the road".
With the addition of Student Cantor Phil, we will be enjoying music twice a month during school hours and during selected services. We will also have the PJ Library programs once a month. See you soon. JEWISH FEDERATION OF GREATER ORANGE COUNTY EVENTS
Save the Date! Habitat for Humanity Mitzvah Build 8:00am – 1:00pm on Sunday, October 15 in Newburgh. Come work with your neighbors and the Jewish community to support building a home for a family in need. For more information, please call 845-562-7860 or email director@jewishorangeny.org Sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Greater Orange County

A Message From Rabbi Jacob Rosner Dear Friends,
In the Orthodox world, there was a ritual associated with these days of awe in addition to the Shofar and the fasting.
Our sages wisely teach us that sincere teshuva (repentance) will bring about forgiveness for only one type of sin. “Sins between people and God” says the Mishna, “are forgiven on Yom Kippur, but sins against one another are not forgiven until we ask forgiveness of (the offended) person.
If I didn’t properly keep Shabbos; if I didn’t pray every day; if I was lax in my keeping the laws of Kashrut; I can ask forgives of God during these holy days. But if I gossiped about my neighbor, or cheated someone in business, and I ask God to pardon me, the Mishna tells me I have reached the wrong address.
During the month of Elul and during the days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, religious Jews will make a point of asking forgiveness of one another for “any offenses I may have committed during the year” and often, real feuds are resolved.
I believe that even in their wisdom, the sages of the Mishna left out another party that needs forgiveness during this holy season. Rosh Hashanah, the day of judgment, is a day not only for God to judge, but a day we must sit in judgment of our own lives. Each of us must ask ourselves if we fulfilled our obligations to our family and our community. Did we live a life filled with love, charity and compassion? Did we stand up for those who are oppressed or persecuted? And even as we ask ourselves these and other questions, we must commit to doing better in the year that is coming.
And then on Yom Kippur, we must forgive ourselves. Rabbi Jacob Rosner

A Message From Rabbi Douglas Kohn Dear Friends, This year we are reversing a major ritual of Rosh Hashanah. Instead of casting away our sins INTO the Hudson River, we are taking them back OUT of the Hudson River. Let me explain! In Genesis’ Creation story, in Chapter 1, verse 2, God’s spirit hovered over the primordial waters. Hence, even before God made the light and the dry land, God had made the waters. Thus, water is the first of all God’s creations, the basis of all life and existence. And, waters mean much more! Called Tashlich, each year on the afternoon of Rosh Hashanah, it is a Jewish custom to go to a body of flowing water – and we are fortunate to have one of the most significant such bodies minutes away in the majestic Hudson River – and we symbolically empty our pockets of breadcrumbs bearing our sins. They float away or are gobbled-up by the ducks. And, with our sins carried away by the current, we are spiritually cleansing ourselves and preparing for the coming Yom Kippur. However, daily we learn of new dangers tour earthly environment. Global warming is melting the polar caps and magnificent glaciers on Greenland and Mount Kilimanjaro. Butterfly and bird species are disappearing, as flowering plants are blossoming at earlier seasons due to the warming atmosphere, causing floral food supplies to be out of sync with the fauna which depend upon them, upsetting the symbiotic balances. And, there is a floating island of man-made, plastic pollution the size of Texas swirling in the Pacific Ocean, harming fisheries, whales, algae and more. Commonly, we decry that there is little we can do except adjust our thermostats, drive more efficiently, walk or bicycle more often, and hope for better technology to reduce our carbon footprints. But, there IS something we can do! WE can work to reverse our destructive influence. Besides determining to emit less harmful toxicity into the air, soil and waters, we can draw out some of the harm which we have done, and repair our misdeeds. Hence, Reverse Tashlich! This year on the Sunday prior to Rosh Hashanah, on September 10 at 1:00 at Plum Point Park, we will join with hundreds of other Jewish organizations worldwide to take out of the Hudson the garbage which we have put in. We will reverse our misdeeds, and not only spiritually cleanse ourselves, but physically cleanse our beautiful waterway. On that day across America and around the world, Jewish groups will combine to extract tons and tons of plastic, metal, tires and more from rivers, lakes, oceans and even ponds and streams. This year, we have the opportunity to turn prayer into action. We can make a difference towards a healthy spiritual future. Please put Reverse Tashlich at Plum Point Park on your calendar – Sunday, September 10 at 1:00. Bring a rake, a plastic bag, gloves, a hat and your own reusable water bottle.
How wonderful! We can turn a little bit of God’s creation back to its primordial beauty, and earn our way into the Book of Life for 5784! Shanah Tovah! Rabbi Douglas Kohn
