It has been an exciting time for the Religious School the past two months, and we're winding the school year down to its conclusion.

First, we had a fantastic Purim Festival. We welcomed the other Orange County temples and more than 150 people showed up for the food and the fun. Our teachers Patti (who did two art projects) and Cantor Phil (who did the megilla reading and the music), were great, as well as Amanda, Cheryl and Stacey doing their usual great work. Rabbi Doug dressed for the occasion and I froze outside doing the traffic. Also, thanks to Arnie for his help putting it all together. We had hamantaschen, bagel bits, and pizza for the crowd. And it was great fun for the kids and their families.

In April, we had art where the students made their own seder plates, and music with Phil. He taught the four questions to everyone, as well as Chad Gadya.

We had an in-school seder which was well-attended and led by the students. They read the English and the Hebrew to make it a real seder. And real Passover food was served. Even real horseradish root.

Our Hebrew instruction during the week has gone well, as Nava's class has done great and my Wednesday students can truly read any Hebrew prayer in our siddur.

The plan for the remaining classes is to have our Family Museum Day and have the students lead a Friday night service in May. Stay tuned for details.

The Ladies Auxiliary by Tova Mires

When free-spirited Batsheva moves into the close-knit Orthodox community of Memphis, Tennessee, the already precarious relationship between the Ladies Auxiliary and their teenage daughters is shaken to the core. The Ladies Auxiliary brilliantly illuminates the timeless struggle between mothers and daughters, family and self, religious freedom and personal revelation, honoring the past and facing the future. The Ladies Auxiliary is a triumphant work of fiction.

Dear Friends, Poor Shavuot.

A Message From Rabbi Jacob Rosner

It is the most ignored of biblical festivals. It comes and it goes, and many of our people are unaware of its presence. Perhaps it is because Shavuot has no ritual that captures our imagination. Passover has its Seder and all the hametz cleaning preparations. On Sukkot, we wave the lulav and the etrog in a sukkah built either in our back yards or at our synagogues. Almost every Jewish home has a hanukkiah and performs the American Jewish mitzvah of our gifting our Christian neighbors by a factor of 8. On Purim, we dress up and give each other gifts, not to mention the reading of the Megillah with its fun noise making. Finally the High Holidays have crowded synagogues (or zoom machines), shofar blowing and fasting to etch them into our consciousness's and memories. If only the events at Mount Sinai had occurred a few weeks earlier, at least our children could learn about the festival before they begin their summer vacations.

Yet, Shavuot commemorates the most important event on the Jewish calendar. According to Rabbinic tradition, it is the anniversary of the giving of the Torah. On that day, 3,000+ years ago, God descended upon Mount Sinai and spoke The Word to our people and subsequently to the world.

Shavuot means weeks. It refers to the counting of seven weeks between Passover and the festival of Shavuot. In its original incarnation, the festival, like the other two biblical pilgrimage festivals, Passover and Sukkot, was associated with the agricultural cycle. We were to count between the barley harvested during the Passover season and the wheat harvested seven weeks later.

In time the agricultural aspect was de-emphasized and a new historic reason was stressed. Today, the theme stressed is the anniversary of the giving of the Torah.

There is a midrash that the soul of every Jew, past and present, was at Sinai on that day. Each of us, according to this teaching, signed that long ago covenant. Each of us was there. Every Jewish soul heard The Voice.

Traditionalists may take this midrash literally. If we are partners in a covenant with God, each of us had to sign the contract. Otherwise, why should we be bound by the response made by our ancestors, “we will do and we will hear”.

Others take the midrash as metaphor. We were not at Sinai. We did not see the mountain quake, nor did we hear that Sinai shofar blast. But The Voice? Those words first heard at Mount Sinai have reverberated through the ages and shaped our very society. We were not there, but each year we have the opportunity to read the story of Sinai and dedicate ourselves to Torah. Each year we can allow the echo of The Voice to speak across the generations.

Revelation may have been a one time event frozen in history. But every covenant requires two parties. In the case of Torah, one partner revealed and one accepted. Each year Shavuot gives us the opportunity to accept Torah once again. It is a day when we stand with our ancestors. A day when we echo their response “we will do and we will hear”.

Dear Friends,

A Message From Rabbi Douglas Kohn

Hellos and Goodbyes can be difficult.

Goodbyes entail loss and uncertainty. Hellos entail uncertainty and potential change.

In synagogue life, we commonly endeavor to avoid all of that – loss, uncertainty and change. But, ironically, those are the only elements which we can ever point to any constancy and certainty!

And, at this spring/summer season, we are amid a period of Goodbyes and Hellos to beloved clergy.

Allow me to extend a best wishes and prayers of good health to my colleague and neighbor, Rabbi Jacob Rosner. I will deeply miss him. His wit and wisdom, his singing Bob Dylan lyrics and his rich knowledge of Jewish text, and his strong progressive bonafides were a precious gift. Admittedly, we worked on our relationship, and we can truly pride ourselves on building a special friendship – it was one which evolved through our devoted effort and will, one which generated a unique trust born out of deepest and candid inner reflections by both of us, and one which will leave a cherished gap in my life when Rabbi Jacob concludes his CAI tenure. Please join me in wishing Rabbi Jacob a restful and thoughtful next chapter of his rabbinate and his life.

And, we wish a fond farewell to our Student Cantor, Phillip Fisherman, who served Temple Beth Jacob with joy and grace this year. His demeanor, attention to detail, dedication to personal growth and deep reservoir of Jewish music were wonderful gifts, and his seamless integration to TBJ and our worshipful life was a tribute to his professionalism. Phillip’s mature character and Judaic curiosity contributed greatly to our Temple life, and we will always be blessed by our time together. We wish Phillip only success at Westchester Reform Temple, which is fortunate to be gaining such a talent and such a mensch.

As well, we prepare to welcome to Temple Beth Jacob our new Student Cantor for 2024-2025, Samantha Chamberlin, who is so thoughtfully supported by the generosity and vision of David and Connie Littman and the Elfriede and Eugene Littman Memorial Legacy, which underwrites our Student Cantor program. Samantha comes to us with advanced musical talents and 4thyear standing at the Cantorial School, and with a joyfulness and eagerness to participate in all facets of synagogue life. We have promised her that she will not be bored nor disappointed; TBJ is a rich well of Jewish life, and we encourage Samantha and our congregants to engage and connect, to explore and experiment. Welcome, Samantha Chamberlin!

To each – going and coming – Hazak, Hazak, v”Nitchazeik – Let us strengthen and enrich one another!

Rabbi Douglas Kohn
