M AGAZINE INTRO

naturae miraculum

Consider the enigma of a tiny seed, from whose cocooned and shadowy subterranean winter life, might soon bloom a flower. That seed is hungry for the sun and in love with light. Its minute little body begins to move through the hidden channels of the earth and sets its roots. Rising through the invisible veins of the upper parts of the seed, it bursts forth and produces that first tender shoot. By a miraculous instinct, it knows what is good for it, which is to come out of the earth into the air, the sun, and the open sky. As the sun angle grows long and the days lazily stretch out, instinctively, our spirits stir. We’ve moved from the inwardfocused days of winter, shaken off the sleepiness of spring, and

now we are awake. We’re entangled in a beautiful net of cyclic time and the rituality of nature: it’s the summer solstice. We are alive, refreshed, renewed, and energized. Kolya’s Summer Box has arrived, and we are so excited to have you join us! We’re outside, we feel alive, we’re moving, and we’re celebrating. Countless hands and minds worked on this project. We encourage you to pour yourself a drink (such as the beautiful Vanilla Flower Power Iced Tea on pg. 31), explore your new treasures, and sit back to read our little magazine. In obtaining this box, you’ve carved out this time for yourself. We hope you enjoy it as much as we loved putting it together.

For an all-over glow, mix the desired amount with your favourite day cream, facial oil, or foundation and apply with fingertips or a foundation brush. Tips and tricks: Mix a small amount with your favourite body oil or lotion and apply to shoulders, collar bones, and legs for glistening, candle-lit skin.

To Use: For best results, apply to dry skin and massage gently to activate and polish. Rinse thoroughly with warm water. Use daily AM & PM. Tips and tricks: This cleanser can be applied in a generous layer and left on for a few minutes as a deep cleansing mask, or combined with Tata Harper’s “Resurfacing Mask” for a more concentrated exfoliating treatment.

Routine

A botanically-inspired, framed collage print made for those who love nature and all things wild. This piece was created using only hand-cut elements from vintage books and magazines and aims to act as a gentle reminder to always see the beauty in the world around us, and most importantly, within ourselves.

Odacité

BA + S Eye Contour Serum Concentrate We adore this concentrated oil blend because it is fantastic for all skin types, while the cooling stainless steel rollerball helps eliminate dark circles and puffiness. The nourishing formula is rich with nutritive oils such as baobab and vitamin E, making it particularly useful for those with dry or over-stressed skin in the undereye area. To Use: Using light pressure, roll under each eye from the inner corner outwards. Gently press product into the skin using your ring finger. Tips and tricks: For an extra soothing application, store your eye serum in the refrigerator for a therapeutic cooling effect. Excess can also be tapped into the lips as a bonus 2-for-1 hydrating product!

Superstar Deodorant The search for a deodorant that is both natural AND effective can be a frustrating game of trial and error. Thankfully, you don’t have to look any further because Routine deodorant is a game-changer. With a variety of scents and formulas to choose from, there’s something for everyone! We chose “Superstar” because it’s one of our best sellers and has a grounding, unisex scent. We hope you’ll love it as much as we do! To Use: Apply a small pea-size amount to underarms and reapply if needed. Tips and tricks: If you love the scent, you can warm a small amount with your fingertips and apply it to your wrists and neck as a solid perfume.

Mad Hippie Facial SPF Shield your skin from harmful UV rays while nourishing and repairing it at the same time! This lightweight and easy to blend facial SPF contains non-nano particle zinc oxide along with antioxidant-rich ingredients like red raspberry seed oil, carrot seed oil, and vitamins C+E, to regenerate, hydrate, and protect all skin types. To Use: Apply to face and neck and reapply if exposed to direct sunlight for long periods of time. Can be used alone or layered over your favourite serum, moisturizer, or facial oil.

Orgaid

Greek Yogurt Nourish Sheet Mask Calm, comfort, and deeply hydrate all skin types with this nourishing sheet mask. Greek yogurt soothes redness and inflammation while gently exfoliating and plumping with lactic acid and naturally derived beta-glucan. Whether your skin is needing a hydration boost, or a soothing reset after too much sun, this sheet mask is the perfect way to bring the spa home. To Use: On clean skin, apply the sheet mask and leave it on for 20-30 minutes. Remove and rinse, or massage any excess serum into the skin before applying your favourite moisturizer. Tips and tricks: For an extra refreshing and rednessreducing treatment, store the mask in the fridge before using. Apply any leftover serum in the pouch to your neck and chest and massage it into the skin.

Eco Bags Milano String Bag This eco-friendly, reusable tote bag makes running errands and shopping a breeze — without the waste. Natural cotton fibres stretch and expand to hold up to 40 lbs and then collapse down into a compact bundle for easy storage. To Use: Perfect for transporting fruit, veggies, baked goods, and beverages, or as a breathable gym bag.

8

Bee Bagz

Sandwich Bags These convenient pouches are made of cotton and ethically sourced Canadian beeswax and are a handy, eco-friendly alternative to single-use plastic bags. From baked goods to produce, Bee Bagz keeps your snacks fresh in the fridge or on the go, and can be reused for years to come with proper care. To Use: Place food items inside and fold the top of the bag down. Seal it shut with a pinch of your fingers; the warmth of your hands seals the bag shut. Odacité From fighting cancer to fighting wrinkles, Odacité is all about the marriage of luxurious French skincare with green Californian living. Having been born and raised in Paris, but now living in Los Angeles, Odacité founder Valerie Grandury found her wake-up call upon a breast cancer diagnosis. “If I wanted to heal, I needed to change everything.” Grandury quit her job, went back to school to become a wellness consultant, and embarked on the journey to remove toxins from her life. “I was not ready to sacrifice performance.” When it comes to skincare, she wanted it all: efficacy, purity, and luxury. Unable to find it, she made them herself. Word of her custom-made skincare blends spread quickly, and so Odacité was born. The brand scouts the world to source the highest quality ingredients, including precious plant extracts, oils, and cosmeceuticals. It is PETA-certified, and they never use fillers, parabens, petrochemicals, synthetic fragrances, dyes, or phenoxyethanol.

Routine PICTURE IT: TWO SISTERS, BOTH WITH SUPREME SENSES OF SMELL. One roaming the world with her guitar and a suitcase full of essential oils, the other halfway through nursing school. They sense a problem. One sees art, the other science, but they see an issue the same: there are too few natural products, and so many of the scents put on our bodies aren’t just strong, they overwhelm the olfactories. In launching Routine, they start small, and they start stinky - the armpit. The sisters start with people they love, and they realize they love the way their people smell. They don’t want to suppress their scents, they want to enhance them. They use nature-made ingredients to craft blends that merge and mingle with the pheromones of their friends. And they realize - we are not one smell fits all. Routine deodorant was born from the minds of sisters Neige and Pippa at the base of the Rocky Mountains in beautiful Calgary, Alberta. Routine is, and always will be, proudly manufactured in Canada. With a deodorant for every body type, 13 scents, and 5 different formulations including vegan, sensitive skin, and activated charcoal, Routine is never tested on animals and contains only @ROUTINECREAM

clean, natural ingredients.

The core mission of Routine lies in alignment with the body’s natural pheromones. Their nature-made ingredients mingle with your body’s inherent chemistry, so that you still smell like yourself, only better. Not only that, but Routine has successfully diverted over one million plastic containers from landfills through the use of glass jars. Their refill program has been incredibly successful, available in specific stores across North America (including the Kolya Naturals Refill Station in Edmonton!) And although most people know Routine for their natural deodorants, get ready, because Routine is launching a new line of products this year. Shampoos, conditioners, creams, body oils, and solid perfumes - oh my!

Tata Harper

“BEAUTY [IS] NOT A CHORE, OR A LUXURY, BUT SOMETHING YOU DO TO MAKE YOURSELF HAPPY.”

For Tata Harper, a pioneer in natural skincare, beauty will never come at the expense of our health. “I couldn’t find anything that was effective, made of highquality ingredients, and pleasant to use. I knew if I was looking for results without worrying about my safety, other women must be too, so I decided to create my own.” This is why she launched Tata Harper Skincare in 2010. Harper didn’t just want to make basic toners and oils, but an effective, safe, beautiful line of skincare that can compete with the most high-end conventional products. Raised in Baranquilla, Columbia, Tata Harper now resides on a New England farm with her husband (and co-CEO) and three children, where she grows ingredients and manufactures products. Not every ingredient can be grown on the farm, but what can, Tata Harper cultivates herself. The farm is 100% organic and boasts a wide array of herbs such as calendula, arnica, alfalfa, chamomile, borage, and more. The remaining ingredients are carefully selected from around the world. “I feel very happy creating a product that not only makes your skin beautiful, but also keeps people healthy and improves quality of life.” Products must be 100% free from GMO’s, toxins, fillers, and artificial anything. If a product isn’t perfect by Tata, then the product doesn’t launch. Running Tata Harper Skincare is very busy. Along with caring for her family, Tata Harper is always on her toes. “I love doing this,” she says. It is a true labour of love, but creating products that not only makes the skin beautiful, but also keeps people healthy and improves quality of life, “that is extremely rewarding.” @TATA H A R P ER S K I N C A R E

Eco Bags

In 1989, Eco-Bags opened for business with one core mission: clean up the planet one bag at a time.

B R A N D H I GH L I G H T

A

s disposable plastic bags are wasteful and costly to the health of the planet, Eco-Bags strives to inspire

others to embrace the 3 R’s (reduce, reuse, recycle) and say “no” to single-use plastics. Each day, the Eco-Bags team comes to work with the desire to do good work, and do good things. If the foundation of the company were to be pinned to one point in time, it would be the sight of late-80’s NYC littered with trash, most of which was unwanted single-use plastic bags stuck in trees and gutters. From there, the classic EcoBags String Bag

was born!

It debuted at the 1990 NYC Earth Day celebration, and sold out in a mere four hours. Since then, EcoBags has introduced organic and recycled cotton to the line, long before there was market awareness for it. All recycled fibers are post-industrial, which keeps waste from the landfill. All dyes are nontoxic, and the entire supply chain is certified by SA-8000 (Social Accountability International). EcoBags believes that big problems can be solved without creating new ones. A tiny pioneer brand can create the change we want to see: committed to producing a wide range of sustainable, durable, reusable alternatives to single-use plastics, sourcing and producing ethically, and continually seeking to reduce their environmental impact from seed to sewing.

RMS Beauty RMS IS REAL MAKEUP SECRETS! RIGHT MENTAL STATE! ROSE-MARIE SWIFT!

A great deal of time, energy, and love went into the creation of RMS beauty. This is a line of products meant not only to enhance your natural beauty, but also protect your body from the potential long-term effects of synthetic ingredients like preservatives and fragrances. RMS follows a strict manufacturing process that maintains the healing enzymes, vitamins, and antioxidants of their plantbased components, with an ultra-pure, high-quality guarantee.

The goal of RMS is to educate their audience to be more aware not only of what is put on the skin, but what goes into our bodies as well. Eat healthy, eat wisely, and never underestimate the power of clean water, fresh fruits, and vegetables. “The skin is the mirror to the gut,” and whatever we put into our bodies affects our complexion. Living a healthy life sets the foundation for healthy, glowing skin. RMS’ products are created with this mantra in mind: use healthy, living ingredients that you feel good about. We connected with RMS’ founder Rose-Marie Swift to gain some insight behind this Kolya-favourite brand. Rose-Marie, is there any one childhood memory tied to the future founding of RMS? My first obsession with beauty was my mother’s red lipstick tube and her powder with white Marabou feathers overflowing from the jar that was always sitting on her vanity. I would watch her, and just marvel at how pretty that red looked on her lips, and how soft those feathers must have felt as they danced across her face. Out of all the beautiful ingredients RMS uses in its formulations, which is your personal favourite and why? I would have to say our coconut oil! It’s one of the healthiest oils in the world, if not the healthiest, and I chose this one in particular for its high levels of lauric and caprylic acids. These are known for their antifungal and antibacterial properties that help clean and nourish even the most sensitive, irritated and aging skin. It’s an exceptional moisturizer and it actually helps condition your eyelashes and your hair as well as the whole body. Add a little to your bath water and your skin will feel like silk. Nothing removes makeup better than coconut oil, as its

Whenever possible, we use glass jars that can be recycled - plastic can only be recycled two or three times, but glass can be recycled infinitely. The glass we use is acid etched to avoid any form of spraying or frosting, which can be toxic to the environment, and can release VOCs. '94 Nicola, Kolya’s founder, began her studies in aromatherapy & herbal studies with Robert & Laurie Szott-Rogers, where her passion for plant medicine was sparked. At that time, she started working in a local health food store, which in her opinion, was the greatest job in the world. '96 After completing her diploma

i n massage therapy, Nicola began her degree in Anthropology at University of Alberta, with a focus on cultural medicine.

'97 She met her life partner John, at Optimum Health Vitamins – whose practice was deeply rooted in nutritional and herbal sciences. Optimum Health soon evolved into their family-run business. '99 Nicola & John were introduced to Dr. Hauschka Skincare. She fell in love with how it transformed her skin, and this love affair has lasted till today… '00

Life took a profound turn ( as is always the case when a first child is born) when they welcomed their daughter Tia into their life. It was time to learn how to juggle an ardent entrepreneurial life with the depth and beauty of family.

'01 The conception of Kolya Naturals. In order to better train Optimum Health staff in natural skincare, Nicola took Dr. Hauschka’s aesthetic training where she was taught about the intricacies of natural skincare and a lifestyle that follows nature’s rhythms. Inspired, she began the plans for Edmonton’s only organic skincare boutique & spa (at the time). '02

Kolya Natural's opened its doors on Whyte Ave, one of Edmonton’s most favoured streets in the city.

'04 Their family grew once more when Sebastian (Nicola & John’s second child) was born. To better support and handle two kids and two growing companies - they decided to amalgamate Kolya Naturals and Optimum Health into the same 109 St. location they still share today.

Who are your sources of inspiration as the founder of Kolya?

Thank you for this question! I have had the privilege of working beside some extraordinary people at Kolya. I think of my company as a kind of orchestra where I may be conducting the show - but it would be nothing without the talented musicians that play beautiful music. I also find it paramount to acknowledge the people who teach and inspire us. They are our teachers and like Newton expressed “If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants. These are just but a few mentors from earlier years. If I were to list everyone, this interview would never end. Robert and Laurie Szott Rogers - When I was a teenager I often visited their healing store. I would go there for comfort; the smell there was divine. These two have been my teachers ever since. Catherine Potter - As a mentor, she is my North Star. Catherine's wisdom and counsel have helped me through the milestones of my life: motherhood, marriage, death of loved ones and my purpose for being here. I am eternally and completely grateful to this woman. Rosemary Gladstar - When I apprenticed in her program I was humbled by the purity of her spirit and her limitless generosity to impart knowledge and kindness to us all. Rosemary, one of the most widely adored herbalists in North America, even offered to help wash our clothes when we were staying on her mountain. Mandy Aftel - In an utterly beautiful and aesthetic way, Mandy re-ignited a love for essential oils in me. Her book “Essence & Alchemy” is complete poetry and when I trained with her, she enchanted us by teaching how to blend for a beguiling scent and 2002 as well as beautiful colour.

2008

'08

Nicola completed her h erbal and aromatherapy studies where she was inspired to expand what Kolya offered by specializing in raw botanicals such as organic herbs, essential oils, fl ower essences, carrier oils etc. This was the conception of Earth's Aromatique.

'09 Earth's Aromatique opened. Later referred to as Kolya's Botanical Apothecary, Earth's Aromatique offered all the aforementioned ingredients as well as a Learning Kitchen to teach the craft of herbal remedies and natural skincare. To this day, the Earth’s Aromatique name remains the unique brand under Kolya Naturals, wherein we provide fresh essential oils, organic botanicals, ingredients, wellness supplements, and more.

'10 Nicola began studying botanical perfumery from Mandy Aftel, one of the world's top botanical perfumers. Nicola then apprenticed under Rosemary Gladstar, charmingly considered "the Grandmother of North American Herbalism." Her herbal studies greatly deepened and she was able to extend the practice of herbal medicine to staff and customers alike.. ART IST HI GHLI GHT

PaperMoon Collage Danielle Sweetnam is a Canadian collage artist based in Edmonton, Alberta. To compose her unique pieces, she exclusively uses found images from vintage books and magazines in her work collected from a myriad of places. All elements are hand-cut and then meticulously altered and assembled, resulting in an entirely new image that perfectly balances modernity with nostalgia. Danielle breathes new life to old materials that may have otherwise been forgotten. How long have you worked with the medium of collage and how did you discover your passion for it? I’ve been exploring the medium of collage for about three and a half years now and to be honest, it began as a happy accident! I had taken a long hiatus from art and was feeling discouraged because I couldn’t seem to find a medium or style that suited me. I thought maybe this art thing wasn’t for me! I just happened to come across some vintage magazines from a local antique store and purchased them (thinking they’d be great for my coffee table). When I got home I started flipping through them and thought, “this image might look interesting if it was superimposed onto this background” and I started cutting things out and playing around with the composition... and I’ve been obsessed ever since!

26

Where do you collect your materials? One of the things I love about hand-cut collage as a medium is that finding the materials is like one big treasure hunt! When I first started creating collages I would spend hours scouring second hand stores and garage sales trying to find vintage books and magazines, but now that more people know about my art and the materials I use, I’ve been very fortunate to have people reach out to me with donations of old books and magazines... their trash is my treasure!

What is your background (educational, family, otherwise)? How have these life experiences influenced your work? Do you have any specific memories that led to your formation as an artist? I’ve never had any formal art education. I grew up in a family where art and music were a big part of everyday life— whether it was watching my grandma work on

“ I love that I am able to repurpose and recycle materials into something beautiful that may have otherwise ended up in a landfill.” 27

ART IS T HIGHLIGHT

her newest painting, my mom creating edible masterpieces in the kitchen, or listening to my dad sing while strumming his guitar— I was always surrounded by creativity, and that definitely helped nurture and inspire my love for art.

You incorporate botanicals and natural imagery into nearly every piece you produce. In a modern COVID-heavy landscape, constantly shifting, where it feels environmental issues are being somewhat pushed to the wayside, do you feel your work addresses any one particular theme? I wouldn’t say that my work aims to address any specific themes and if there is a particular message, it changes from piece to piece. Sometimes I think it’s important to create something that allows people to step back, take a break from all the noise and just look at something pretty for a moment. However, because of the second-hand books and magazines I use, I love that I am able to repurpose and recycle materials into something beautiful that may have otherwise ended up in a landfill. Eco-friendly art!

How do you feel your work is interpreted by your audience? What are some of your favourite interpretations or comments you’ve received? I love creating a sense of nostalgia for a time or era that people may or may not have been a part of. I think the vintage materials in combination with the modern composition make it appealing for a wide age-range and audience.

My goal when creating a collage piece is to blend all elements as seamlessly as possible so that it’s difficult to tell where the edges start and end. I know I’ve accomplished this when people ask if the piece is a painting or created digitally, and that’s a great feeling!

What inspired the piece included in Kolya’s June box? After a long winter and so much isolation, I feel like we are all more than ready to come out of hibernation! I wanted this piece to embody the natural beauty of botanicals and to act as a reminder that even when things seem uncertain or we feel ungrounded, we are always blooming.

What are you listening to while you’re in the creative zone? Patsy Cline, Irma Thomas, David Byrne, Dolly Parton, John Prine, Nina Simone, Billie Holiday… the list goes on and on!

8 Fuss-free ways to reduce our carbon footprint (W I TH O U T LE AVING T HE HO M E ! ) by SA M A N T HA E .

t ain't easy being green: the movement towards environmental sustainability is a fickle beast. Countless factors are at play in the push for a green planet. For a single person, the transition can feel daunting. Living in a world where major corporations and countries are the biggest offenders for global emissions(1) how much can a lone individual really do? Fortunately, the world is slowly becoming more eco-conscious. We’re celebrating our own small accomplishments towards a cleaner planet and maintaining our momentum towards substantial change at a global level. There are plenty of small changes that can be made in the home that help to reduce waste, clean the air, and conserve nature. Here are some small, super-easy, super-green ideas to reduce our carbon footprint!

Launder clothes with cold water

Hang to dry

A staggering amount of energy used in our washing machines goes towards heating water: up to 90%! (2) Making the switch to cold water laundering greatly reduces energy consumption. Washing in cold water reduces the chance for fabric staining (whereas hot water can “set” stains) and keeps coloured and dyed fabrics looking sharp. Consider washing even 4 out of 5 loads in cold water to reduce CO2 emissions and save energy.

Dryers are convenient. They’re quick, effective, and eliminate the hassle of hanging our clothes up on a line. But they are huge energy hogs, coming in right after the refrigerator in energy consumption. Investing in a drying rack or hanging our clothes out to dry – even just once per week – can drastically reduce carbon emissions and help save on utility bills. Not only that, by removing the wear and tear of a dryer cycle, clothes will last considerably longer, preventing the buildup of textiles in landfills. And now that it’s finally summer, many of us can dry our clothes outside!

Our concentrated laundry detergent from The Bare Home is colour-safe, free of phosphates and dyes, and extremely effective in cold water! It even comes in a 3-litre refill box so you can refill your reusable dispenser at home; the use of bulk-size containers lower CO2 emissions and plastic waste by over 80%, so you can feel good about using The Bare Home. It’s good for you, your home, and the earth.

If it’s cold or rainy outside, we lack the space, or simply prefer using a dryer, consider pure wool dryer balls. We like the ones from Moss Creek Wool Works. Made from the natural wool of happy sheep, they absorb excess moisture, remove static, and cut down on the time clothes need to be in the dryer.

Collect water from the shower We’re not suggesting showering in cold water – we’re not monsters– but in that minute or so when we leave the shower running to warm up before hopping in, we’re literally letting money and clean resources run down the drain. Consider keeping a bucket or pitcher in the bathroom to collect that minute’s worth of water before getting in. We use it on our plants, or reserve for use in cleaning later in the day... But what about cooking water?

Fun fact: plants love starchy water! Water retained from boiling potatoes, pasta, beans, eggs, and vegetables can be marvelous for gardening purposes. The starch and nutrients leached into the water during cooking help soil retain moisture, thereby reducing the amount of times we need to go back and water our plants. It promotes the storage of nutrients within the soil and may reduce the amount of synthetic fertilizers we need to use later. Just be careful not to use water that has been salted or seasoned in any way, and allow the water to cool completely before using.

Ditch the plastic shopping bags & cling wrap This one feels like one of those “easier said than done” tricks, but with a little ingenuity it’s easier to say “no” to plastic waste than ever! Plastic bags and cling wrap are only a fraction of the global plastic pollution problem, but on an individual level it’s about making small, measurable changes to influence a larger impact. Eco-Bags are perfectly suited for grocery trips, farmers markets, and most shopping needs. It is extremely compact when not in use and easily stashable in your purse or vehicle, which means you’re less likely to forget your reusable bags when heading out the door. Similarly, for bagged lunches, picnics, or everyday cold food storage, Beebagz is a fantastic alternative to plastic wrap! It’s made from ethically sourced materials and naturally repellant to moisture, odors, and bacteria. Best of all, when paired together, Eco Bags and Beebagz make the perfect low-waste picnic companion. Wrap your goodies in Beebagz, pack them in your reusable Eco Bag tote, and head to the park or your own backyard to enjoy the summer sun!food safe, and with proper care they’ll last you for years and years.

Make homemade stock with food scraps Don’t throw away those veggie scraps! The root ends of onions, garlic peels, carrot skins, and other vegetable bits & pieces can be collected for homemade vegetable stock. Store them in a large bag in the freezer. When it’s full, empty it into a pot, cover with water, and simmer for at least thirty minutes up to several hours. Strain, season if desired, and use in our favourite soup recipes or pop back into the freezer for use when we’re ready. Avoid using leafy or cruciferous vegetables such as brussel sprouts, cauliflower, and broccoli, as these can turn bitter. The staple vegetables, like celery, carrots, onions, and garlic, all freeze extremely well and make an amazing low-waste vegetable stock. Store your vegetables plastic-free with our new favourite food-storage bags from Stasher! Silicone, food safe, and with proper care they’ll last you for years and years.

Get some air Okay, we’re Canadian, so we’re used to keeping things cool. The height of summer can be a sticky, sweaty burden for those of us who thrive in colder temperatures. But did you know that air conditioners release roughly 117 million metric tons of carbon dioxide each year? Nearly 6% of a family’s energy usage goes towards home cooling (3). If you’re unable to invest in a high-efficiency air conditioning system, consider opening your windows at night when the air is cool. Allow it to circulate through the home, and in the morning, close them and shut the drapes to lock that sweet frigid air inside. Alternatively, keep the windows open with a fan to circulate air throughout the day. To beat the heat even further, make some popsicles by freezing some lightly sweetened Earth’s Aromatique teas or juice! Choosing to forgo our precious air conditioners in the summer reduces the strain on our power grid.

Make our own cleaning products Common commercial cleaners are made to make domestic life easier, but not necessarily safer: many conventional products carry health concerns for the family, and the manufacture and disposability of their packaging can contribute to environmental pollution. We can reduce the amount of conventional synthetic chemicals and plastics in our environment by switching to simple DIY cleaners. Using equal parts water and white vinegar in a spray bottle, maybe a few drops of lemon or tea tree essential oil, will do the trick for most surfaces. Our recipe for a herbal cleaning powder takes on tough messes, especially when paired with ecofriendly scouring pads. Practicing good green habits at an individual level is not to be underestimated. Collectively making small changes in the home can contribute to positive change for the environment.
