Alexander Saakov was introduced to me by Guram Tsibakhashvili. I will never forget this meeting: in 2000, I decided to organize his exhibition… He used to top every available competition in each and every former socialist country; he created the chronicle of Sukhishvili and portrait photos of Sviatoslav Richter… He loved Guram Tikanadze, the person who had entirely changed his life and helped him become a photographer; He loved Elene Akhvlediani, Lado Gudiashvili; he was not able to imagine his life and himself being a photographer without Old Tbilisi; he considered Alexandre Roinashvili to be an inimitable master of images… He had managed to keep his desire to learn the new over his +++entire lifetime. There is a natural process of searching, when an artist freely uses all of his/her abilities. It seems like there is nothing strange about it but this peculiarity too requires a separate skill, the one that was natural to Alexander Saakov. His tragic death was painful to everyone. The Kolga photography contest is annually being held in Tbilisi since 2002 and it is very popular in our country. During previous years, in addiƟon to Georgian photographers and amateurs, many foreigners have also parƟcipated in the contest. In 2006, the winner in the Best Portrait nominaƟon was an American photographer Molly Corso, while in 2007 the grand prix went to a German photographer Julia Mehls. Germany has a long tradiƟon of photography. The art of photography and photographic design are being taught on a high level in many higher educaƟon insƟtuƟons across Germany, various exhibiƟons are being held, relevant literature is being published and many others. Georgia, in this respect, is sƟll developing. Over the past several years, various interesƟng events dedicated to art and photography have been held. Famous Georgian photographers arrange photography courses and exhibiƟons. Georgian youth is especially interested in the art of photography. For this reason, the Kolga photo contest tries to encourage and support them. Over the past several years, numerous foreign photographers and photography criƟcs have been invited as judges. This year, for the first Ɵme in Kolga’s history, we have invited a famous German photographer and docent Wolfgang Zurborn (www.wolfgangzurborn.de, www.lichtblick-school.com) and Tina Schelhorn (hƩp://www. lichtblick-school.com/dozenten/Ɵna_schelhorn.html), German photography expert and art dealer working in several countries. Both for us and for the judges it was a pleasant surprise to see excepƟonal works by many authors. In addiƟon, we sadly note that several of them didn’t make it to the top 100. Among the photographs submiƩed the reportage theme was prevalent; a great part of which truly deserved being included in the top 100. However, because of the fact that the topic was free, the judges have eventually tried to pick the best photography projects in every genre from the photographs submiƩed. Furthermore, many students and young photographers from Germany have also taken part in the contest; for example, students and graduate photographers of Academy for Design in Cologne (www.ecosign.net). In the future, we plan to become even more connected with German and European photographic scene, in general. In order to achieve this aim, we plan to exhibit the best photographs in the contest in the following ciƟes in Germany: Berlin, Cologne and Lübeck. We hope that the versaƟle joint projects accomplished by us together with our European partners become even deeper, which will be beneficial not only for our contest but also for the development of photography in general. DJ under the Christmas tree In my photographic work „The Townsman and the Village“, I staged myself as several stereotypical townsmen in several stereotypical countrified environments. It seems that the person and the place of action do not accord with each other. In this way, the cliché and prejudice about the townsmen when compared to the people living in countrified environments and vice versa are realized more exactly. At a glance, my photographs should amuse. At a second look, they should also confront the viewer with his own stereotypes and prejudices.

#403 Concept: The photographic work «#403» was created in an abandoned apartment in Cologne, Germany in the fall of 2009. The moment staged here is that of a glance in the mirror. The method of staging plays with the aspects of solitude and morbidity. The light of an old, flickering mirror cabinet made of plastic immerses the scenery in a pale light. Man and space lose all contours and are blended together to form a moment of emptiness. Summary: Castor 2010 Since 1996 the radioactive waste from the French La Hague is brought to Germany’s Gorleben in special “Castor” cases. The transport is traditionally confronted with massive protests, especially near its destination, the interim storage facility of Gorleben, which used to be a salt dome. The background of the protests is that the question of final storage has not been answered yet and it is not clear how long the waste is going to be stored in the Gorleben facility. More than 85% of the population in this part of Germany represents farmers who are worried about the possible contamination of their land and future harvest. In 2010, the transport was delayed for about 92 hours due to extraordinarily massive protests and the deployment of more than 20,000 police officers. 94

Summary: Slum Life - Mathare Nearly every big town in Africa and Central America has a slum with an explosively growing tendency. According to the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) due to urbanization, up to 2 billion people will be living in slums by the year 2030. That would be a quarter of the world population then. Mathare is the second-biggest slum in the outskirts of the Kenyan Capital of Nairobi. An estimated one million people live here under very poor and severe conditions. The daily life is under way outside the tin huts and the youth display a lots of hope despite a life barely comparable with the term „human dignity“. Kolga Photo Competition – Jury Statement It was a great pleasure to look at the wide range of photographic visions presented by the photographers from Georgia and Germany participating in the Kolga Photo Competition 2011. It is very interesting to see, that the way of seeing life is different in the two countries. We are living in a globalized world, but the individual perceptions, developed in the context of cultural, political and social influences, are still varying. Thereby they are creating a richness of a pluralistic perspective on our life. That makes the dialog between the cultures so important. We are very excited about the quality of many photographic series from Georgia. There is a great feeling for the right light, the decisive moment, the strong expression, the effective mise-en-scène and also a good sense of humor. These are all traditional qualities of photography, but they are often used in a contemporary way. The works from the German photographers are more based on conceptions. Beside classical genres of photography, they want to find new ways of telling stories about modern life. The images are often irritating, because they are denying a conventional view. Having looked at so many good photographs it was not easy to select the winners of this competition. We have chosen five very different photographic styles to make it clear, that there are a lot of possibilities for individual imagery in contemporary photography. The photographs by Chalatashvili are celebrating the vast of the landscape. The excellent compositions and the perfect use of light are creating a natural space, which seems to be endless. The photographer is not depicting the beauty of nature only. His best images are on the cut between description and abstraction and the shadow of the helicopter on the snow takes you back into civilization. Gvinepadze has a strong belief in the authentic power of photography. The very sensible black-and-white portraits of people in a psychiatric hospital are creating a strong social document. In every photograph, you can feel the deep interest and respect for the human being. The experimental portraits by Bigvava are focusing on emotional conditions. Reflections and unusual perspectives are taking the faces out of an every-day context. The visual layers are constructing very impressive images showing ambivalent feelings in a poetic way. In memory of her childhood at the Black Sea, Sophromadze put together her associative picture story, combining portraits, landscapes and private moments into some kind of photo diary. The precise conception for the combinations of pictures is the basis for a vivid experience of life in the area of tension between the past and the present. The journalistic series by Rostamkhani is giving an impression of the life in the second-biggest slum in the outskirts of the Kenyan Capital of Nairobi. These images are not a cold and distant documentation of the inhuman conditions there. The photographer is very close to the people and his complex pictures are not defining them as victims but as individuals. Gujabidze is photographing people at work places but the portraits are not looking like official representations of their professions. With subtle irony she/he is showing the persons not in their function. They seem to be lost in their surroundings and the spectator can feel the emotional shape between boredom and despair. By using light and colour in a perfect way the photographer is transforming every day situations in a theatre of real life. The jury is giving a special prize for this series. The quality of all winning series is that intuition and conception, feeling and sense are working together for a strong visual statement.
