CAPTURING THE MOMENT
Tylan Porath Takes His Camera on a Journey
Written By: Koleton Anderson
In Windom, Minnesota, the horizon stretches wide, and every corner has a story waiting just around it. But even more unique in this setting is a remarkable passion and entrepreneurial journey. Just 23 years of age, Tylan Porath has built a successful business out of his love for photography and videography, Porath Media. This began to develop into an awesome career that connected him with the vivid world of storytelling through taking photos and making videos with friends.
Tylan’s journey began in 2016, inspired by a mutual appreciation for the beauty of things that exist around them. He and a few of his friends would wander through their hometown, taking pictures of grain elevators and old buildings that go unnoticed. A Minneapolis skyline that beckons, an abandoned structure with secrets-both were inspirations. We were just having fun,” he recalls, “but it sparked something bigger. We realized we had a knack for storytelling through our lens.” In 2019, Tylan began working on his first major project: making a film that would serve as both a learning experience and a creative outlet. Over eight months, he mastered everything from concept development through the arduous editing process that came after. It took a year to finish editing,” he shares, reflecting on the commitment it required. Yet, every hour spent was a step in his evolution as a visual storyteller, shaping his skills and deepening his passion for the craft.
He did not feel obligated to become a photographer and videographer but did it because he loved art. “I did not want a regular 8 am to 5 pm job,” he says with a smile. In ways, photography and videography are less about working and more about exploring and connecting with the world. This choice allowed him to skip traditional college, a choice he proudly stands by as he continues to thrive in an industry that fuels his creativity.
For Tylan, creation has no bounds, least of all those restricted to a classroom. Other than kick-starting a learning curve with hands-on experience, he knows the nitty-gritty of his work through trial and error. “Every project is a new adventure,” he says, knowing well the spontaneity that comes along with filming different subjects and scenes.
Every career has its challenges, and for Tylan, that challenge happens right after the shoot. “After a long day of filming, the last thing you want to do is sit down and edit,” he says, an ever so slight weight of experience wearing in his tone. Sometimes there is such pressure to get content to social media channels or clients that may bring along overwhelming moments. “You just want to chill and relax, but you have to edit all that to make sure it’s done and ready to go out.” Still, Tylan understands that this is a serious challenge to meet in the hard world of media production. On the other hand, there are a whole load of benefits one may get from this work, and they are really satisfying. “The best part of the job is the people I meet and the places I get to go,” he says with excitement. Everything he does-from local business collaborations to bigger projects-adds depth to his vision. From seeing it on billboards to the comments and messages of people on the internet, it all balances out the hard work he puts in. “Finishing a project and seeing it come to life is one of the most gratifying feelings,” he adds, pride illuminating his face.
specialists to create that slick, rounded final product. “It’s not just one person doing everything,” Tylan points out. “You have people focusing on lighting, audio, and camera work. Collaboration develops the work more, and it’s cool to see how all their talents come into play.”
Through networking and personal connections, Tylan’s path has allowed him to collaborate with larger companies, a great example of the power of community. Growing up with the owner’s son at Husets Speedway led him to become the official photographer and videographer venue. “A lot of it is word of mouth,” he says, as the relationships start to mean more and more within the industry. “Once you build a name, the opportunities start coming.
It’s all about collaboration in media production. Larger projects are built with a variety of
Passion Projects and Preferences
Indeed, ask him what his favorite things are to shoot, and Tylan just lights up. “Farming aWnd motorsports are my top picks,” he says. The calmness of farming is a slower pace, which lets him shoot shots that are really contemplative-especially during the mystical hours of sunrise and sunset. “There is something particular about the beauty of the land when the light is just right that captures it really well,” he reflects. Motorsports, on the other hand, offer an exciting capriciousness. “You never know what you’re going to get; you can’t direct the car to be positioned a certain way. I love that element of surprise.” Of course, not every setting really works to his advantage in bringing that creativity onto the screen. Tylan especially despises low-light shooting, which usually brings a gloomy mood he does not want to evoke. “Night shoots can be tough,” he affirms. “You have to denoise everything to make it clear and smooth, which can be positioned a certain way. I love that element of surprise.”

Advice for Aspiring Creatives
First off, Tylan has some valuable advice for those aspiring to break into the world of photography and videography. His first suggestion is simple but crucial: “Start with a mid-range camera, something in the range of $500 to $1,000,” he says. “You don’t need the most expensive gear to get great results, but you do need a camera that gives you the flexibility to grow.” He emphasizes that while the camera body is important, the lens is what truly transforms the way you capture images. “Invest in a great lens,” he continues. “A good lens can make all the difference in the world when it comes to the quality of your shots. It changes your game entirely.”
He highlights that the right tools—such as a versatile lens—are important, but stresses that the true distinction between a beginner and an expert lies in creativity and practice. “Equipment is only part of the equation,” Tylan explains. “The real magic comes from your vision, how you use what you have, and the hours you put into honing your skills.” Beyond the visual aspect of photography and videography, Tylan places a strong emphasis on the importance of sound. “A lot of people focus so much on the visuals that they forget about audio,” he points out. “But sound is just as critical, especially in video. You can have the most beautiful footage, but if your audio is poor or distorted, it can ruin the entire experience for the viewer.”
He advises newcomers to “invest in a good microphone or a solid audio setup” right from the start. “Getting clear, sharp audio when you’re shooting video is so important,” Tylan explains. “You can’t always circle back to capture better audio after the fact, and trying to fix bad sound in post-production is a headache you want to avoid.” His perspective shows that, for him, producing high-quality media isn’t just about having the right equipment—it’s about understanding and balancing all the components that go into making a compelling story. “It’s all about the details,” Tylan says. “The visuals are the first thing that catches the eye, but the sound is what makes people feel connected to your work.”
Tylan’s advice reveals that succeeding in the world of visual media requires a combination of technical know-how, an understanding of the tools at your disposal, and, most importantly, a commitment to continuous learning and creative exploration. Whether you’re capturing a photograph or shooting a video, it’s the story you’re telling that matters most—and that requires much more than just the right gear.
As Porath Media continues to grow, Tylan is gratefully reflective about lessons learned along the way. If he had to start over, he would master the nuances of bookkeeping and better establish himself online. “Building a website and managing social media effectively are crucial,” he now realizes is important to provide a solid base in today’s digital world.
Tylan Porath’s is a story of passion, perseverance, and creativity. His story-from small-town hobbyist to in-demand media professional-is one of the wonders that come with simply following one’s dream. And as he continues to capture the world through his lens, one can only wait with bated breath for the great stories yet to come. For Tylan, this is much more than a career; it’s a lifetime adventure, and the best is yet to come. With every shutter click, with every frame he shoots, Tylan Porath tells a story, but he inspires others on how to find their creative paths.

Down For Diesel In Morefield
Max Keller’s Vision for Quality Diesel Repair
Written By: Koleton Anderson
Owner and founder Max Keller had one thing in mind when he founded his business, Morefield Diesel-to build a company that not only did quality work but where the workers have a good time, too. He pursued entrepreneurship in 2021 after feeling unfulfilled in his old position and wanted more career and financial autonomy. But he had no idea it would evolve into one of the best diesel repair shops serving the Sioux Falls metro area, not just because of its craft but also in the brotherhood that defines the business.
From Frustration to Fulfillment
Before Morefield Diesel, Max was getting increasingly frustrated with the limitations and hardships of his job. He was confident in the idea that by taking things into his own hands, he would be able to make more, have the opportunity to build something meaningful-something that reflected both a passion for quality work and positive workplace culture. With years of experience under his belt in diesel repair and having a pretty firm understanding of the industry, Max set out to create a business where he could do things his way. In 2021, Max took the leap to open Morefield Diesel. The land beside his house was available, so he decided he could build a shop out in the back and give himself an opportunity to grow into it. Not only did that keep the overhead down, but in so many ways, it made Morefield Diesel more of a local business with that personal, family touch.
A Shop Built on Brotherhood
What really sets Morefield Diesel apart from any other business is the culture built by Max. He believes there is more to being successful in business than just making money; it’s about the work and the relationships you build with people around you. He describes this team of people at Morefield Diesel as a “brotherhood.” Of course, when you spend 12 or more hours a day inside a small shop with a group of people, you become close to one another. Close in ways that transcend professional relationships; close in ways that are more like friendships. For Max, this camaraderie serves as one of the driving forces behind his will to keep growing the business. “It is about having fun while you are doing an awesome job,” he reinforces, adding positivity in all his team members and instilling much trust in them.
Growing the Business with a People Focus
Morefield Diesel continues to grow, and Max continues to focus on building a company that values quality work, quality people, and quality lives. In addition to his four full-time employees, he has hired two part-time team members to help keep up with his workload. He is fully aware that for long-term success to be achieved, the right team has to be built, and there must be a healthy work environment where values have been sustained from what the company was originally based on. To Max, the business isn’t just about fixing diesel engines; it’s about creating space where people can enjoy coming into work, bond with people, and create lasting relationships. Moving forward with growth and brand development, Max will more than likely continue a strong commitment to quality work and a supportive/fun environment at the core of Morefield Diesel’s identity.
Looking Ahead
With such a great foundation laid, the future indeed looks very bright for Morefield Diesel. His vision of building a company that merged hard work with quality service and with camaraderie paid off. It grew into not only a wellknown expert in diesel repair but also into a positive example of workplace culture. The fact that Morefield Diesel has continued to grow illustrates pretty well that Max’s relentless focus on people, quality, and fun will be the driving forces at the heart of this business for many years to come. Whether through new hires, customer relationships, or further expanding the services they offer, brotherhood seems sure to remain at the heart of this business.
