Paul Giegerich, Sr. ALWAYS IN OUR HEARTS Paul was a man who aggressively sought to deepen his relationship with the Lord, even to his last breaths on Earth. He had a profound love and care for young people, especially for those who seemed troubled or confused; many can witness of having been “rescued” by Paul from a life that could have led to disastrous consequences.

Paul’s love for and involvement in Koinonia Academy consumed a large part of his heart - he was always willing to sacrifice anything to keep the school active, including his time, energies and salary. He was a faithful and caring father, a dependent coworker, a pillar of strength to his family and community, a model of courage and steadfastness, and a dear friend.

Dear Friends of Koinonia Academy,

How blessed are we to be able to gather together today after all we have been through over the past 18 months? God is good! It is an honor to be with you today to celebrate our school that does so much to positively impact the lives of not only our students, but their families and the Church at large. When we began KA 37 years ago, the founders were committed to building a school where students could receive an education of both mind and soul and were willing to make profound sacrifices to ensure it happened. We are indebted to our founders, for their vision, values and hard work to create this place of authentic Catholic education, and we will continue to honor them in how we grow and improve our school in the future.

Each day, our campus is alive with the sounds of our students praying, playing, singing and questioning in order to become the people that God has created them to be. We have grown over 30% in enrollment this year as we continue to live out our mission, in God’s grace.

The theme of our Gala this year is Truth, Goodness and Beauty, the three tenets of classical education. Koinonia Academy is a classical Catholic Pre-K - 12 school, which means that our students are being challenged to understand and question what they are being taught and discover how they will use the knowledge they gain to be a light in the world. This is very different from simply learning and memorizing facts, and it is why our students embrace the world and one another differently.

We are grateful and humbled to have Hank Soule, Christiana Molnar and Professor Robert George here with us tonight as our honorees. Each of these honorees has put into action the same values and convictions we aspire to in our Koinonia Academy mission. They are strong witnesses of our faith and examples of true disciples of Christ.

As we rebound from the challenges of the pandemic, I have great hope in our future because of the students I meet at KA. They are fearless in their pursuit of personal holiness, virtue and wisdom; a reflection of KA’s authentic Catholic education.

Thank you for believing in our mission and for your generosity, which is helping us to continue this legacy for many years to come.

from Dear KA community, Thank you for responding to our invitation and attending the KA Gala.

Sending an invitation is easy, the response usually demands some thought and weighing of options. I hope your response to our Gala was an easy one for it provides an opportunity to honor Hank and Kathy Soule, both of whom have sacrificed so much of themselves for the mission of KA over the years, and to applaud them for their love of Christ and KA. While Kathy’s passing was a shock to us all, the beauty of her life, faith and witness to Christ lives on and we still feel her presence and miss her. It’s almost impossible to think of Hank without Kathy or Kathy without Hank.

Accepting the invitation allows us to honor one of our alumnae, Christiana Molnar, whose faith, formed first in her family and then strengthened at KA, has provided her the foundation of faith which enabled her to serve others as a nurse whether it be with the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta, India, or on the front lines in the emergency rooms of our local hospitals dealing with those suffering and dying of Covid 19. Christiana’s goodness reflects God’s goodness to all who suffer.

It also provides the privilege of hearing one of the most prominent and influential minds in America in honoring Professor Robert George whose ability to articulate the truth of our Catholic faith in the public arena is unmatched. He fearlessly defends the life of the unborn, champions traditional marriage, fights for religious freedom, and values the Christcentered, classical education at KA where he has been a guest judge at one of our debates. He is also a banjo picker, born and bred in West Virginia and keeps the music tradition alive in the spirit of other West Virginians such as Frank George, Oscar Wright, Hawkshaw Hawkins, John Walker, Clarence Tross and Elmer Bird.

The most important invitation, which in accepting our Gala invitation you help to support, is making disciples for Jesus Christ in the 21st Century.

We teach what is true, good, and beautiful and the faculty and staff of Koinonia Academy equip young people with the tools they’ll need to live as disciples of Jesus who is Lord of all.

Robert P. George is McCormick Professorship of Jurisprudence and Director of the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions at Princeton University. He has served as Chairman of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom and on the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights and the President’s Council on Bioethics. He has also served as the U.S. member of UNESCO’s World Commission on the Ethics of Scientific Knowledge and Technology. He was a Judicial Fellow at the Supreme Court of the United States, where he received the Justice Tom C. Clark Award.

A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Swarthmore, he holds the degrees of J.D. and M.T.S. from Harvard University and the degrees of D.Phil., B.C.L., D.C.L., and D.Litt. from Oxford University, in addition to twenty-two honorary doctorates. He is a recipient of the U.S. Presidential Citizens Medal, the Honorific Medal for the Defense of Human Rights of the Republic of Poland, the Canterbury Medal of the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, the Irving Kristol Award of the American Enterprise Institute, and Princeton University’s President’s Award for Distinguished Teaching.

His essays and reviews have appeared in the Yale Law Journal, the Harvard Law Review, the Columbia Law Review, the Review of Politics, and the Review of Metaphysics. His books include Making Men Moral: Civil Liberties and Public Morality and In Defense of Natural Law (both published by Oxford University Press), and The Clash of Orthodoxies and Conscience and Its Enemies (published by ISI Books).

Christiana attended Koinonia Academy from Kindergarten through 12th grade and graduated in 2010. She then pursued a Nursing degree and received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Seton Hall University in 2014. In 2015, she moved to India & spent 6 months in Calcutta, volunteering with the Missionaries of Charity. Upon returning home, she began working as a RN on the cardiac/ telemetry unit at Overlook Medical Center where she has worked for the last 5.5 years. She also works as a private duty RN with patients, providing home care. In 2018, she started working with Hearts of Joy International, an organization that provides heart surgery for children with Down Syndrome in India, Uganda, Mexico, & the Philippines. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her friends and family, cooking, decorating, creating beautiful floral arrangements, & traveling the world.

Kathy and Hank moved to New Jersey in 1976 with their two children.

They attended a Jesus Week at the NJ shore shortly after arriving.

The presenters were Fr Jim Ferry, Sr Julia Jamink and others. With new found faith they began attending HOPE prayer meetings in 1977. In 1984 they moved from the NJ shore to Berkely Heights with then five children so the oldest could attend Koinonia Academy which opened that year. Hank worked at Lockheed as an engineer during those years and Kathy began teaching 4th grade at Koinonia in 2003. Both Hank and Kathy retired in 2010. Hank accepted the position of Director of Facilities at KA and the couple moved into the Gate House on the KA campus, along with one child still at home.

Hank was involved in school maintenance and support of school athletics. Hank developed relationships with the teaching staff and many of the students as Kathy had done over the years as a teacher.

Hank particularly enjoyed prayer with the student body each day in the auditorium. It was rich and meaningful providing the core of KA culture. Hank retired from KA service in 2020. His beloved Kathy, suffering from cancer, passed away early in 2020. They were happy years at KA.

PARACLETE AWARD

Featured Alumni RAPHAEL SCARFONE ‘03 After graduating from Koinonia in 2003, Raphael traveled with other KA alumni of that year and served on the Graduation Formation Program. While traveling on the GFP, Raphael heard about NET Ministries, a ministry based out of Minnesota that performs uplifting Catholic retreats for 6—12th grade students across the country. He served with NET ministries for 2 years.

After finishing his service with NET, Raphael started studying Math Education in Cranford, NJ. He was able to do his student teaching at KA under the watchful guidance of Len Forman. While attending school he started working in construction as a laborer for The Final Cut Construction where he was able to advance from a laborer to a foreman in a year and a half. In 2006 he got engaged to his now wife, Shannon, (a Minnesota native) whom he met while they served together on NET. Raphael moved to St. Paul, Minnesota in January of 2007 where he continued school while looking for a job in the construction industry. Due to the recent housing crash, no one was hiring so Raphael started his own one-man construction company, Scarfone Contracting. Raphael and Shannon moved to South St. Paul, MN and now have 6 children (their newest arrival on 8-7-21, Fiatta Anne Josefa!) She is a miracle baby who they were told would not survive through the pregnancy. The Scarfone family is part of the Community of Christ the Redeemer, which is a Catholic Charismatic Community in West Saint Paul, MN. Raphael still runs Scarfone Contracting which has grown immensely since its beginnings. Their team continues to grow and take on more and larger commercial and residential projects. Raphael and his family have been blessed beyond measure with God’s provisions in countless ways. Raphael’s experience at KA has given him many great tools he has been able to use and share with others both in his personal and professional life.

GRACE WESSEL ‘10 Following graduation from Koinonia Academy in 2010, Grace attended the University of Notre Dame, receiving her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology.

Thereafter, she earned a Master of Arts in Speech Language Pathology at Montclair State University. Grace has since moved to Chicago, working with individuals across the lifespan, treating articulation, language, feeding and swallowing, motor speech, and cognitive disorders over the past 5 years. It is her hope to better serve her community by starting my own private practice in the coming years!

P E T E C L E M E N T E ‘ 11 After graduating from KA in 2011, Pete entered the engineering school at the Catholic University of America. During his time there he assisted the Campus Ministry as Student Minster, planning events and working with other students to contribute to the on campus Catholic community. He graduated Cum Laude with his Master’s in 2016. The following year was spent at a variety of engineering jobs as well as teaching physics and Pre-Calc at KA. In 2018, Pete was hired as a mechanical engineer at GAF materials LLC. With this job came a cross-country move from NJ to San Francisco, CA. There he assisted the design team on new solar products and has even gotten his name on a few patents! Currently Pete works remotely for GAF Energy and is enjoying his newfound flexiblity traveling around the country.

Dick Birmingham 1929-2021 Beloved Teacher

Before Koinonia had its first class, Dick was part of the leadership of the People of Hope who got it started.

He helped negotiate the purchase of the property in Plainfield to about a third of the asking price and develop a long range plan for KA. Dick also taught a variety of topics at KA for a number of years. He loved the kids and always prayed for them, and is still praying them! Most important of all Dick was a man of God whose holiness and kindness and generosity overflowed to all who he met, including all who walked through the doors of Koinonia Academy.
