As caretakers of the land, Kohanaiki has preserved and restored many historic sites, including more than 250 anchialine ponds, ceremonial sites and a line of stone cairns known as ahu; these stacks of rocks traditionally acted as a navigational point that notified travelers when they were entering a new ahupua‘a (land division).
There are 14 ahu at Kohanaiki, running parallel along the mauka (mountain) side of the anchialine ponds, and nine of these fall within the Kahakai Estate homesites. They imbue the land with a part of a living Hawaiian culture that makes homeowners the stewards of a revered heritage.
