ATTRIBUTED TO CHARLES WILBERT WHITE JR. │ American, 1918-1979 Andrew Jackson at The Battle of New Orleans, 1940 Oil on Canvas,15½ x 32½ inches, Unsigned
This sweeping panoramic composition depicts the intensity of a Revolutionary War battle, most likely the Battle of New Orleans. At left, General Andrew Jackson stands stoically atop a barricade, bisecting the composition. Jackson surveys the divide and the oncoming opposing forces. Bodies of fallen British soldiers in red coats, face down with limbs hanging into a defensive trench, have just been shot by gunmen positioned at the top of the barricade. A group of African American soldiers in the foreground, work to reinforce the barricade. Without armor, they quickly move large blocks into place, protecting Jackson and the firing troops.

ATTRIBUTED TO CHARLES WILBERT WHITE JR. American, 1918-1979 The Life of Benjamin Banneker: Astronomer, Surveyor, Author, and Farmer, 1940 Oil on Canvas,15 x 19 inches, Unsigned
This panel illustrates the life of Benjamin Banneker. In many ways a historical anomaly, Banneker, an African American, rose to prominence as he assisted with the initial survey of Washington, D.C., published abolitionist material south of the Mason-Dixon Line, and engaged with some of the country’s founders in an unprecedented manner. The artist’s linear narrative illustrates Banneker’s path to upward mobility. He rejects formal spatial divisions, such as distinct panels, in favor of a more fluid approach to convey Buckner’s achievements. In the upper left-hand corner, Banneker reads atop a rock overlooking his family’s tobacco fields. His father and mother, formerly enslaved, made their living as homesteaders on the 100-acre property. A shooting star signifies his future accomplishments and his prowess as an astronomer. Below this, Banneker reads next to the scales of justice, a violin, beaker, and a drafting compass to reflect Banneker’s level of education. At the center of the composition, Banneker plays the violin with his back to the viewer then faces front reading intently. In this way, the artist emphasizes Banneker as studious with well-rounded interests. ATTRIBUTED TO CHARLES WILBERT WHITE JR. American, 1918-1979 Town Scene from Revolutionary War, Including the Red Coats of the British Army, 1940 Oil on Canvas,15½ x 22 inches, Unsigned
This composition is divided into roughly six vignettes, depicting the complex political and racial undercurrents of the Revolutionary War. In the bottom left corner, a group of mourning men cradle the deposed body of a fallen black man. To their right, a priest elevates a cross while blessing the bodies of two black congregates, perhaps indicating a baptism or conversion. In the scenes above, groups of men rally together in a call to arms, confronting the Red Coats as an American revolutionary flag is hoist above the town square.
The bottom left corner depicts Banneker as a horologist, or clock maker. In his early twenties, he constructed a handcarved wooden clock that kept perfect time, a notoriously difficult pursuit. The upper right vignette shows Banneker’s white neighbors and community members, as a reminder that despite Banneker’s intelligence and acumen, he experienced alienation due to his race. Finally, Banneker, in a yellow coat, presents his geographical surveys to the government. His work was crucial in the planning the future capitol of Washington D.C. This final scene is subtly defiant. He lays the plans in front of a seated Thomas Jefferson who had conveyed racist sentiments in public. This scene emphasizes Bannecker’s rise to prominence and influence.
ATTRIBUTED TO CHARLES WILBERT WHITE JR. │ American, 1918-1979 Union Colonel Robert Gould Shaw and the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Fighting the Battle of Fort Wagner, South Carolina, 1940 Oil on Canvas,15½ x 32½ inches, Unsigned
This vignette illustrates the heroic efforts of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry, perhaps the most famous regiment of African American troops lead by Union Colonel Robert Gould Shaw in the Civil War. In an assault on Fort Wagner, near Charleston, South Carolina, the Colonel and 272 of his troops were killed in battle. Colonel Shaw, shown at the center of the composition, is slumped over, gravely injured with a medic attending to him, while the rest of his battalion attempts to fend off the onslaught of enemy fire. At right, bombs burst a hole in the defense throwing the soldiers mercilessly backward. At the center, a soldier kneels with his uniform agape in agony, as another solider supports him and an African American medic attempts to ease his pain. Above this trio, a solider hoists the American flag, foretelling the end of the battle and signifying a Union victory though the battle wages on . ATTRIBUTED TO CHARLES WILBERT WHITE JR. American, 1918-1979 American Historical Vignettes with Scenes of Meeting and Troops, 1940 Oil on Canvas,15½ x 32½ inches, Unsigned
This square composition is divided into six vignettes illustrating the planning of the Civil War. In the top left, a group of men, two seated, four standing, engage in discussion. The apex of the group is Abraham Lincoln, presiding calmly over the animated talks. Below, African American soldiers with raised arms are being conscripted. To the right, a solider, a statesman, and an African American figure meet. In the upper right, bombs burst in the air as two generals on horseback face ranks of armed soldiers. In the final vignette, lower left, a grieving figure raises his arms at a burial. A figure with white hair and beard looking down at a kneeling man is most likely Frederick Douglas.
