Kununurra Sun

Well, hi there!
It's been a minute since our last edition and boy we’re glad to be back.
The festive season flew by in a humid haze of bright blue skies, too much ham and juuuust a few mango daiquiris! Some of our team headed home for a cooler respite and family time but for a couple of us, we braved the Kununurra heat for our first orphans Christmas.
As someone who once swore she’d never have Christmas without her family, I have to say a Christmas with your friends is a pretty great way to go. Especially if those friends have a big kitchen and a pool! The days felt slower, like the whole town collectively decided to move at half pace, meandering in a daze between Christmas Eve and New Years Day. A swim a day became a prerequisite, and afternoon naps were the norm. As far as festive seasons go, I have to say it's up there with the best.
Fast forward to today and it's already the middle of January, proving my theory that time gets faster as you get older. The

rate I’m going, it will be Easter by the time I finish this intro. The rude shock of being back to work full time is tough, but admittedly the routine of normal life is a welcome change.
I haven’t quite launched into my new years resolutions for 2025 yet, instead letting a few things percolate in my mind so come February I might actually have a goal or two for the year.
I’m looking forward to seeing what another year in this beautiful little slice of paradise we live in will bring. Will this be the year I finally partake in a multi-day hike? Will I reach my savings goal or will I splurge on a trip to the Kimberley Coastal Camp? Who knows!
One thing I know for sure, is that there will be plenty of incredible stories, events and people to write about and here at Kununurra Sun HQ, we cannot wait to see what 2025 brings!
I hope the start of your year is going swimmingly! (and that these waterfalls finally start to flow!)
Have a wonderful start to the year friends!
Jadi goowindayin gerloonga gamamelema. Baliboong, gilijing, jiyilng yawoorroong gerloo-ban-tha. Ngoojalilib ginayin dawang. There is water everywhere in the country. All the billabongs, creeks, and springs have water. The country is green.

Sexiest Waterfalls of Kununurra
Move over, Hollywood—it’s time for Kununurra’s sexiest waterfalls!
Forget abs and glossy hair—who cares about that when you can have roaring cascades and pristine swimming holes? Inspired by People Magazine’s annual “Sexiest Man Alive” we’re bringing you something wetter and wilder: Kununurra’s Sexiest Waterfalls! We’ve narrowed down the contenders based on flow, accessibility, swim-worthiness, and general vibes. Buckle up; it’s about to get steamy (or refreshingly cool, depending on how you look at it).
REVOLVER FALLS
Oh, Revolver. You don’t just trickle; you tower. The tallest single-drop waterfall in WA struts in at over 120 metres of pure, unadulterated grandeur. This bad boy is seasonal, so when it’s on, it’s ON. Revolver’s got serious BDE (that’s Big Drop Energy for the uninitiated).
But like all divas, it’s a bit high-maintenance. Getting there requires a helicopter ride or a gruelling paddle-hike combo. Is it worth it? Absolutely. But don’t say we didn’t warn you—Revolver’s allure isn’t for the faint-hearted.
HOMESTEAD FALLS
Nestled near Lake Argyle Homestead, this beauty is the full package—stunning and practical. Picture a perfect curtain of water cascading down, just waiting for you to sit under and cool down. Oh, and the pièce de résistance? When the water
levels are just right, there are cheese-board-sized rocks perfect for laying out your snacks. Nature really said, "You're welcome."
Accessible by boat, kayak, or a scenic walk-in, dare we say Homestead Falls is like the George Clooney of waterfalls— effortlessly charming, down-to-earth, and impossible not to love.
MIDDLE SPRINGS
Middle Springs is like that friend who brings snacks and good vibes—an overachiever in all the best ways. It’s got cascading pools for days, and whether you’re a casual dipper or a hardcore hiker, there’s something for everyone.
But here’s the catch: Middle Springs is a bit too popular. Sharing? Ugh. Not our favourite thing. Get there early or prepare to fight for your spot in the refreshing lineup.
BLACK ROCK FALLS
While we’re bumping down Valentines Road, it would be rude not to include the towering Black Rock Falls. Big bonus points for ease of access and the coldest water you’ll find in Kununurra. But let’s be real: getting in isn’t always graceful. Navigating those sharp rocks is a test of balance, agility, and your tolerance for public humiliation. Worth it? Totally.
WORDS BY: JESS BUCHAN

HERBIES HIDEAWAY
Herbie is the James Bond of waterfalls—mysterious, alluring, and only accessible by boat. Cool points? Through the roof. But Herbie’s also a tease, keeping its exact location hush-hush. Respect. Some secrets are worth keeping, and Herbie knows how to play the game.
CARLTON GORGE/CHAMPAGNE FALLS
A waterfall with a flair for exclusivity. Accessible only by boat, Champagne Falls/Carlton Gorge is best enjoyed when it’s not in full flow—unless you fancy a face-full of pandanus while clinging to your boat for dear life. This little beauty is for the VIP crowd, allowing only a few boats in at a time, and we love it for that.

MOLLY SPRINGS
She may be petite, but Molly Springs is mighty. Flowing yearround, it’s the reliable queen of this list. No long treks, no drama, just cool waters and chill vibes. Pro tip: visit early or prepare to share your splash time with every traveller in town.

SPECIAL MENTIONS
We’re feeling generous - here’s a few more favs that didn’t quite make the list
Mirima National Park - A smattering of waterfalls that pop up post-rain. Some are swimmable, others just eye candy.
Pelican Rock - often gets overlooked by its neighbour Herbie. The walk in is worth it!
Andy's Chasm - the Bear Grylls of waterfalls. IYKYK.
Twin Tubs and Fairy Pools - Cute, cozy, and best without crowds.
So there you have it, the sexiest waterfalls in Kununurra.G rab your swimmers and your Crocs, channel your inner adventurer and get ready to soak in all the watery goodness.
We want to hear from you! Tag us in your waterfall adventures and let us know which waterfall you think is the sexiest!

Small Town, Big Ideas
WORDS BY: JESSICA BAKER
The New Year has brought exciting business developments for the Wyndham-East Kimberley region. From new gyms to tattoo parlours and general stores, these are the businesses set to make your life a little easier – or a little more colourful – in 2025.
BALANCED BY TAHNEE JADE / THE SOMATIC ROOM
Widely loved and attended yoga and Pilates classes run by Kununurra’s Tahnee Jade were recently placed on hold, much to the dismay of many in town. But there was a good reason for the pause. Tahnee’s business is set for expansion this year, with her new studio – The Somatic Room – opening mid-March.
Renovations were underway at the time of writing to make way for offerings including reformer and mat Pilates, yoga and breathwork classes, workshops, and much more.
“Keep an eye on Balanced by Tahnee Jade socials, as with a new studio comes some exciting rebranding,” Tahnee said. “I am having a lot of fun creating this space for the KNX community to enjoy!”
Tahnee’s classes are designed to be energising and dynamic with a focus on building strength, improving flexibility, and enhancing body awareness. The trained yoga and Pilates teacher wants everyone who participates in her classes to leave them feeling strong, empowered, and more attuned to their body.
To keep up to date with the expansion and progress of The Somatic Room, follow Tahnee’s Facebook page: Balanced by Tahnee Jade.
BLACK ROCK TATTOO & DESIGN
A brand-new, Kununurra-based tattoo studio, Black Rock Tattoo & Design, is projected to welcome its first-ever clients this month. Skilled tattooist and studio owner Robert Black has dreamed of opening a studio of his own since he started tattooing at age 18.
Pending the end of six months of renovation works and final inspections by the Shire of Wyndham-East Kimberley, he will soon get to cross that item off his bucket list.
FB: Balanced by Tahnee Jade
Rob is a passionate and skilled artist who has a particular affection for tattooing custom, new-age, and “photographic abstract” designs.
“I love the medium of tattooing,” Rob told Kununurra Sun. “All the little things that go along with it … You can’t fold the sketchbook up and get back to it tomorrow, it doesn’t work that way. The proof’s in the pudding. It all boils down to the ink in the skin.”
A brief skim of Rob’s work on his studio’s Facebook page and website show that he is also a brilliant boab carver of intricate designs, from human portraits to flora and fauna. He is an inventor, too, and has designed and developed his own tattoo machine – dubbed BlackRock 303 – which he said reduces the trauma and discomfort associated with traditional machines, making the tattoo experience more enjoyable for clients.
FB: The Betterment Centre
Photos

BlackRock303 resembles, in look, a fountain pen and has been tried and tested on Rob’s good friend, and the studio manager of Black Rock Tattoo & Design, Jo Meynell.
Rob said Jo played a a mammoth role in helping bring his dream of owning a tattoo studio to life, also expressing heartfelt thanks to his tradie friends who helped him renovate his new studio space at 12 Rivergum Ave, and the Shire for being a “big help”.
“I am pretty excited about it,” Rob said. “To be doing this is pretty incredible really.”

OASIS GENERAL
Wyndham local Brody Leo, the owner of much-loved café Wyndham Oasis, opened the doors to his latest venture, Oasis General, just before Christmas. By January, the new store already had a wide range of products – from clothing to children’s toys and perfumes – which was only expected to expand throughout the year. Whether you need t-shirts, an electric bike, bike tyres, butchering knives, scooters, footy shoes, a watch, basketball gear, a bag, or a gift, Oasis General is where you will find it.

“There are bits and pieces of everything,” Brody told Kununurra Sun. “There was nothing in town, so I’ve got to basically get everything in.” Brody had originally intended for his café to be a place that specialised in plants as well as coffee – but he underestimated how high demand would be for food and drink and his attention was pulled towards making and selling high-quality grub.
Customers of the café asked Brody to order in lifestyle products like perfume for them to purchase; sadly, he said, he ran out of room on his shelves.
There was a gap in the market, and Oasis General was Brody’s idea to fill it. At the time of writing, Brody was still in the process of building the store and had asked Wyndham residents what they would like to see stocked, recognising that many had no car and would depend on his general store for items they could not already get locally. He said he planned to one day soon have a large range of fishing gear available in-store.
“Everyone’s pretty excited,” Brody said. The entrepreneur is looking to expand further in 2025 and turn the vacant piece of land next to his stores into a nursery, complete with a greenhouse for tropical and sun plants. Purchases of the plants will most likely be made at Oasis General.
Customers can visit the new general store between the hours of 9am and 6pm from Wednesday through Sunday.

ALIGN FITNESS STUDIO
The Align Fitness Studio is getting a revamp under new ownership in 2025. In February, Align is set to launch a new open gym which will operate throughout the day, and will be perfect for exercise-lovers who prefer to work out alone rather than in a group.
The gym will also introduce weekend classes after historically hosting weekday classes. And there will be a refurbished sensory room for young people, as well as a Recovery Hub, that community members will be able to access in the first quarter of this year.
William Gee, CEO and Founder of Kimberley Care Group, which now owns Align Fitness, said his organisation will take the business “to the next level for the people of KNX”.
He told Kununurra Sun: “2025 will be a huge year for Align’s commercial arm of the business, but it’s also about opening doors to innovative opportunities in health and fitness, for people living with a disability.
“As an organisation that promotes independence, inclusion, and quality of life, Align provides a unique platform to deliver further on these values. By integrating allability supports, like; 1:1 Personal Training, physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, and group exercise classes, Align can serve as a hub for both therapeutic and recreational activities throughout the day, but keep its commercial classbased fitness brand strong in the morning and afternoon.”
Align and Kimberley Care Group will also be looking to branch into wheelchair-accessible resistance machines, anti-gravity treadmills, and vibration platforms. Adaptive technologies, such as virtual reality exercise systems and sensor-driven movement analysis, may also be used to create immersive experiences for individuals.
The Align team will be running specials and competitions regularly over the coming weeks and months so be sure to keep an eye on their Facebook (ALIGN Fitness Studio) and Instagram (@alignfitnessstudio) pages.

New Year, Same Me
WORDS BY: RACHELLE EISENTRAGER
Not long ago, the clock counted down to midnight and the date rolled over to January 1st, 2025. After a season filled with food, fun, being merry (see: inebriated) and spending time with loved ones, our focus inevitably turns to the excitement of a new chapter, a fresh start and a list for self-improvement.
Get richer, thinner, healthier and smarter: we hear variations of these resolutions every year. In fact, 73% of people in Australia make New Year’s Resolutions, so it’s not a far cry to say this applies to a good chunk of Kununurra. However, the proof is in the pudding. Of those who set resolutions, 88% fail in the first two weeks and 8% actually complete them. Yep okay, feeling rather humble!
With the fear of failure constantly looming in my brain, (yes, I am the oldest sibling) this year I decided to take a more pragmatic approach to New Year’s Resolutions. That is, to not make them. Instead, I’ve taken a deep dive into the world of solutions, intentions and anti-resolutions. In other words, an achievable to-do list, ideas that soundgreat-but-probably-won’t-happen and things NOT to do.
You can thank me (and the internet) later for realistic aspirations.
SOLUTIONS
- Pick a word. Hear me out… Choose a word that captures the mindset you want to adopt for the year. To do this, you’ll need to reflect on 2024 and imagine 2025 by writing down words and sentences that come to mind. For example, people use words such as grateful, growth, or balance. For a Kununurra-esque spin, you might think explore, community, or beauty.
- Make a 1-month goal. Commit to doing something each day for a month. In support of my liver, I’m going alcohol-free and it’s out there in print now (yikes!) Other ideas are: drink 3L of water, walk the dog, make coffee at home, or make your bed.
- Set a monthly goal. Not to be confused with the previous point! Set a goal for each month. Eg. January = make a goal list, February = clean out the boat, March = get swag ready for CAMPING SEASON.
INTENTIONS
- Get to yoga class on time. This one's for me. Firstly, because I have always struggled to be on time (and I’m pretty sure at 30 years old I can no longer blame my mum) and secondly, because in yoga time that’s not good enough. ‘Getting to yoga on time’ means EARLY. Omg pray for me. Being on time could also apply to: work, meetings, school, your weekly coffee date.
- Catch a ‘metrey’. I INTEND to catch one of these elusive fish. Okay, technically this is not an intention, but rather something we must all manifest. It would simply be rude to not include.
- Start Kununurra Sun articles before the due date. We take the mindset of ‘diamonds were made under pressure’ etc seriously here. This one’s also for me. Although, adaptable to anyone and everyone who has a deadline that always falls to the wayside…
ANTI-RESOLUTIONS
- Stop taking work home. Yep, you read correctly. Shut down your computer, turn the lights off and leave your working day behind. Guess what? It will be there tomorrow! We live in a damn beautiful place, so get out the door at 4pm and soak it up. Don’t finish books, movies or podcasts you aren’t enjoying. Be free, let it go!
- Reply to emails/texts/calls by saying ‘I’ll get back to you’. You don’t have to respond to every notification straight away. Ooooh this is a good one…
- Let go of stuff. Spend less money on things you rarely need. I’m guessing you know someone in town, or ‘someone who knows someone’ who has that tool or kitchen gadget you think you’ll use again but never will.
If you’ve gotten this far and it still sounds too much, you’re not alone — I’m just trying to remember to write the year with a ‘5’ instead of ‘4’. Luckily, we have all year to get that one down pat.
Happy 2025, K-town!

Funky Shirt Fridays
WORDS BY: DARCY MACCARTIE
Have you ever been walking around town on a Friday and kept seeing funky shirts? Good-looking lads and lasses sporting colourful tops that stand out from Coles to Elephant Rock? Well, there is a solid reason behind it, and in this article, I am here to tell you why.
Have you ever been walking around town on a Friday and kept seeing funky shirts? Good-looking lads and lasses sporting colourful tops that stand out from Coles to Elephant Rock?
Well, there is a solid reason behind it, and in this article, I am here to tell you why.
Funky Shirt Friday is not just a Kununurra tradition but one which is seen on farms, work sites and local offices around the country. It was originally started by a brand called TradeMutt, to start the conversation around mental health by wearing funky shirts, and what a tradition it has turned into. The difference is the focus on ‘blue collar’ mental health.
These include industries such as trades and agriculture, that so often get overlooked. I myself, working in the ag industry, have seen the highs and lows which a lot of the time the average Joe Blo will not experience.
The great people of ag are some of the hardest working in the country, in some of the toughest conditions. The exposure to the elements, livingremotely and not to mention the ups and downs of the market can all add up.
But my goodness, most of us wouldn’t trade the lifestyle for the world. However, it is so important tobe able to have meaningful conversations about mental health, especially in our neck of the woods.
The same can be said for our tradies—the work they do is critical to keeping our towns running, lights on and buildings being built. But life isn’t always easy on-site, so knowing that you’ve got mates to have your back is key. When you are on-site and see the fellas donning the shirt, you know you’ve got others to help you out and vice versa.
But it’s easy to type these words, so we decided to turn it over to the people and get their take on the tradition.

Getting in touch with the great Amy Jackson from Cere’s Farms, she put it to the boys about their feelings towards the tradition .
'Long hours, isolation along with the majority of our employees working far from home can be challenging. Funky Shirt Fridays provides approachable way to normalise mental health conversation. It’s a small gesture with a big impact’.
Hitting the nail on the head there!
We also approached our good friends at OrdCo, who sent in some great photos of the staff. Who would have thought a funky shirt could mean so much?
But that is just the beginning. By starting a conversation, you are helping to create a movement that is doing so much to support those from our rural and trade industries that may be going through a hard time. It also helps to break down barriers and shine a light on the importance of mental health. The fabric of the small towns is built on community and relationships, so

this feeds perfectly into the ethos of our town.
It also opens up a whole world of support and insight into mental health, to know that you are not alone and that there is help out there no matter what you may be feeling.
So, if you, or a mate, need a hand, firstly reach out and start that conversation or head to some of the amazing resources on the TradeMutt and TIACS websites, where they can help link qualified professionals.
Or simply visit the GP, who are some of the most versed people in the field and are there to help. It may seem daunting, but life has its challenges and we all need a hand sometimes!
I hope to see many colourful shirts around town this year, with many good conversations to follow
Thank you to Ceres Farm and OrdCo for sharing these great pics of recent Funky Shirt Fridays!

A Very Lily Wet Season
WORDS
BY:
RACHELLE EISENTRAGER
It’s been a hot minute since Lily Lagoon Resort was serving us lakeside, but the renovation has been worth the wait for our go-to Wet Season spot. A far cry from what we remember Lily to be, the resort is now home to an incredible covered deck overlooking Lake Kununurra, revamped restaurant, al fresco dining area and state-of-the-art lighting technology.
Photos supplied
And they’re not done yet. The Lily Lagoon Resort team are delivering on all fronts for local families and visitors alike, with a custom playground almost complete, and firepit to host cultural yarning experiences on the way.
Did I mention there’s a pool?
By the time the dry season rolls around, a good chunk of the accommodation will be renovated too, so the resort will be ready for corporate guests and tourists to stay and play.
The team is ready to take function and accommodation bookings, so reach out if you or your organisation need a hand.
On the dining front, their ducks were already lined up pre-Christmas, with Lily treating us to delicious weekend breakfasts, weekday coffees, pop up events and Corporate Christmas functions. The team are ready to hit the ground running in 2025, locking in a bunch of good times.
BREAKFAST Wednesday to Sunday 7 to 11am.
COFFEE Weekdays 7am to 4pm. Cabinet treats also up for grabs.
DINNER Coming soon!
FRIDAY Cocktails Weekly from 5 to 8pm.
SUNDAY Sessions Weekly from 2pm.
The team is working on events for Australia Day and Valentine’s Day too!
What I like most about Lily Lagoon is that it isn’t fancy or overthe-top; it’s just right. A place where you can relax, connect, and soak in everything that makes Kununurra and the Wet season special. A great place when you need a breather and a coffee, or to be surrounded by your favourite people and stunning views without the price tag. The Wet Season is short and sweet, so might as well make the most of it.
You know the drill — if it’s worth knowing, it’ll be on the Kununurra Community Noticeboard, so keep your eyes peeled for updates. Catch you by the lagoon!

NATHAN NINGAMARRA

I was working with Job Pathways at the Cocus Way shed, fixing cars. I had to step away from that for a while because I needed to have an operation It was something I’d been dealing with since a childhood accident, and it was finally time to get it sorted. I have to wear hearing aids now and I get support from Wayfinder.
I joined Wayfinder about four years ago and I was getting support through my NDIS plan. Back then when I started, I would go on drives to Wyndham and spend time fishing. At Wayfinder, I also had access to computers, which became a big part of my downtime. I watch movies, listen to music, and crack up at funny videos on YouTube—those are still my favourite!
After some time away from work, I decided I wanted to work again. I asked Wayfinder to help me find a job, and they were great—they have a Building Accessible Workspaces (BAW) program that helps people find jobs. They helped me build my resume and organised a fit-to-work check for me. We started applying for jobs around town, and I got a start at Job Pathways.
I worked at the Cocus Way shed refurbishing furniture. It was a bit different from fixing cars, but I enjoyed learning something new.
I joined BAW’s 12-week program, which included attending TAFE two days a week. Through that program, I earned my First Aid Certificate and my White Card in Construction.

I also learnt basic computer skills like writing emails and logging into different websites.
Completing the program gave me a certificate called GATE (Gaining Access to Employment), which will help me get more jobs in the future or study. After finishing the program, I have been working at Containers 4 Change, where I now work four days a week. I’m really enjoying my time there and feel proud of how far I’ve come in one year.
Looking ahead, I have set some goals. I want to keep working and eventually return to mechanical work—it’s still my passion. I’m also focused on getting my driver’s license and saving up for a car.
Long term, I want to get a house for me and my mum. On weekends, I dream of heading out on Country with my family, spending time together, and reconnecting with the land.
I feel like I’m on the right path, and I’m excited about what the future holds.

La Karbah
KIMBERLEY CREATIVE
Have you ever driven to a look out spot and pulled up to have a nice, refreshing beverage only to discover your drink didn’t fit your car cup holders? Or maybe you didn’t feel like sitting in your car to enjoy the view but had nowhere but the ground to place your drink? Introducing La Karbah, the magnetic drink holder built for good times. We caught up with the brains behind La Karbah, Jaxon King to learn more about the story behind his nifty little invention.
TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF. HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED IN KUNUNURRA? WHAT DO YOU DO FOR WORK OUTSIDE OF LA KARBAH?
I have been back in Kunnuz for roughly 5 years now. I was born in the local hospital here, so I suppose that makes me a local, aye? I returned periodically growing up, moving down the west coast then coming back and living in Wyndham as a teen. Once I caught all the fish there I moved back over to Kununurra to let the barra repopulate, I then left Kununurra and graduated down south, as I thought the barra needed a bit of rest. I spent a while mucking around down there, as anyone would, then came back home to enjoy the paradise lifestyle. It hasn’t let me down yet. I’ve had a vast range of work throughout my life, from working in kitchen at high end wineries to working cattle getting paid in beef jerky. I’d say I’m a fast learner and enjoy problem solving, along with making people laugh and creating memories that last forever. I currently work for Ord Irrigation which supplies the local farmers with all the water they need for their crop, it’s a fulfilling job and a great team to work with.
CAN YOU SHARE THE STORY BEHIND LA KARBAH AND WHAT INSPIRED ITS CREATION?
The story behind La Karbah™ is pure brotherly banter. I was
sitting up at the Bastion (Five Rivers) Lookout in Wyndham with Shaun Hooper, a couple of years ago now. We were watching probably one of the gnarliest thunderstorms roll across the gulf. There was lightning striking all over the place and looking back it probably wasn’t the best idea to be up there, but we’re thrill seekers and live for the adventure. We were sitting in the front seats of Shaun’s cruiser, having a bevy or 20, and he wouldn’t let me rest my beer on the dash while I was trying to make myself a loaded Jatz cracker. I thought he was joking, but he wasn’t, and it gave me the sh*ts that he was laughing while I was spilling my drink. So I went away with fuel for the fire and built a prototype to prove a point. A couple of weeks went by and I slapped it on the side of his car one day to get the last laugh. He liked it and then we sort of joked about how it could actually become business. I went away and made it into what it is today.
WHERE DID YOU LEARN THE SKILLS TO CREATE LA KARBAH?
I mentioned before that I have had all sorts of jobs and retained random bits of knowledge along the way but nothing major enough to go from idea to product when talking about the La Karbah™. The skill to create the product came from trial and error with second hand woodwork tools, loads of research
Photos supplied

and a bunch of talking. At the time of creation I had not yet been approved for the Intellectual Property (IP), so it was quite hard to navigate conversations without directly telling people what the idea was. I had insight from a bloke named Myron Grosser. He taught me little things like how the grains of wood ran on timber and how to use certain equipment to get the result I was looking for, he was a massive help in my adventure of learning and creating. He was the first person to make a purchase, buying 5 of the original ‘Founder Editions’ which I engraved. Cheers, Myron!
CAN YOU DESCRIBE THE DESIGN AND PRODUCTION PROCESS?
The timber is sourced here in Kununurra and supplied in the dimensions I need by a bloke named Shaun Storer. He has helped me with information to make production faster and easier on the body. The original bars were made from the live edge of the timber (the wavy part on the side of the tree slab) but as numbers grew, I realised this method wasn’t suitable. It was time consuming and resulted in a lot of waste. I decided I wanted to keep that style but also reduce waste. These days, I hand shape each bar with the ‘live edge’ to maintain that same feeling for new customers. I can’t explain too much of the production process as there a few things still being finalised/created but what I can say is: I use a drill press with custom drill bits, Australian made magnets, sustainably sourced kangaroo leather, and one of the strongest food safe waterproof glues in the industry.
WERE THERE ANY CHALLENGES ALONG THE WAY? IF SO, HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
Finance would be one of the biggest challenges I have experienced so far. Starting a business is one thing and making a profit is another, but capturing IP for an idea that hasn’t even been turned into a profitable product is a whole other level. It’s a huge risk if the IP rights are declined. I really struggled with money for a while as I put almost everything into the business and a

piece of paper. Most of you reading this probably saw me bash around town in the clapped out black Hyundai Getz for a while there HAHA! I always remind myself that every problem has a solution and if I can’t find it then I need to find someone who can.
DO YOU HAVE ANY PLANS TO EXPAND THE LA KARBAH PRODUCT RANGE?
The range will be extended, there is a lot going on in the background! I’m not spoiling anything though, just make sure you’re around to help ‘raise the bar’!
WHERE’S YOUR FAVOURITE SPOT IN KUNUNURRA TO ENJOY A DRINK USING THE LA KARBAH?
Probably Sunset Hill. I can see the whole town and watch the sun drift past the ranges into the next part of the world, but I wouldn’t go there if I was you. Loads of mossies, heaps of flies, nowhere to sit, it’s really hot — definitely a bad spot to go, I don’t even know why I go there to be honest!
WHAT’S THE ONE ITEM YOU’D TAKE TO A DESERTED ISLAND (BESIDES THE LA KARBAH, OF COURSE)?
I’d probably take something to start a fire. I know I’d get bored rubbing sticks together, plus it didn’t look that enjoyable in the movie Cast Away. I’d rather start the fire, find something to cook and try to keep the bugs away.
WHERE CAN WE GET OUR HANDS ON LA KARBAH?
If you’d like to be a part of the adventure you can jump onto the website Lakarbah.com and place an order today, if you’re local I’ll hand deliver it. If you want to see my face on your phone promoting and updating the business you can follow @lakarbah_ on Instagram or Facebook. Better yet, throughout the Dry Season you can find them in shops or down at the markets.

Cocktails in the Outback
WORDS BY: CANDICE
What does it take for a couple of DINKs (Double Income No Kids) to find a good Cosmo in Kununurra?
I know what you’re thinking — the crack of a crisp midstrength Great Northern is all one needs racing down the Ord in a 2-stroke tinnie, 40 degree air slapping wildly at your face.
Cold beer is a staple of the outback. Like meat pie to the roadhouse, Prados to the Kununurra Coles carpark, or boab silhouettes to Kimberley merch.
The first touch of condensation from the outside of a can on your clammy fingers is a lush comfort, and no one can take that away from you.
Being the brilliant, multifaceted pink diamond that Kununurra is, I couldn’t help but wonder what lay beyond the humble midstrength beer. So I’ve put my body on the line for a good cause and trialled a few of our town’s refreshment options this Wet Season.
Take this horse to water and I’m pretty sure she’ll drink.
PUMPHOUSE
It’s slick, it’s classy. This is the Upper East Side of Kununurra and where Mr Big would schmooze at.
Sitting on the deck during golden hour makes any human glow. The lazy croc (fondly known as Bobby, I’m informed) that floats nearby is a show for the whole night. Their Queen Apple Cocktail with fresh apple juice, lemon myrtle, apple brandy and dry cider was zesty and a genuine thirst quencher.
My one complaint is that there isn’t a Pumptini option (any Vanderpump Rules fans will agree). The Pumphouse will be back open mid-February we’re told, so a sunset cocktail isn’t too far away!
THE HOOCHERY DISTILLERY
It’s hard to beat the rustic charm and downright farmcore allure of the Hoochery. High ceilings with olden-day and slightly ominous farming machinery line the walls. Start with a tasting paddle or two and I would not skip the Five Rivers Spiced Rum Ginger Mojito.
You’d be a fool to not order the rum cake with whipped cream, which was even richer and more delectable than my tastebuds were prepared for. Pro tip: do not offer to share.
*If you’re team Aiden, you’ll be a team Hoochery.
**If you’re a Hufflepuff, Gryffindor or Ravenclaw, also all team Hoochery.

LILY LAGOON
Lily Lagoon elevates the game, on a completely physical level. There’s a pool. Not only do they have a huge range of cocktails: espresso martinis, margaritas and grapefruit fizzes to name a few, but you can actually swim here after drinking them.
The drinks are visually stunning, and stupidly tasty. To put your mind at ease, I have recently learnt the 30-minute rule for ‘no swimming after eating/drinking’ was completely made up, so you can certainly make the most of everything Lily Lagoon Resort has to offer.
FOR THOSE CHASING ALCOHOL-FREE
And for non-alcoholic beverage options? The Spunky Monkey from The Kimberley Cafe will put hairs on your legs and optimism in your step.
The Ice Creamery you can literally select any ice cream option and turn it into a milkshake (with coffee!) Let that sink in before you can say pistachio choc chip. And, true to form,

Wild Mango Cafe’s mango smoothie is tart, tangy and the only good reason for mango madness to last 365 days a year.
Blak Tapas refreshing iced teas are the perfect treat to cool down, especially paired with their famous poke bowls!
Finally, let’s not forget the throbbing heart of Kununurra — the Ord River Roadhouse. It’s open 24/7 and for that we are truly grateful. It’s not technically a drink, but their gravy is perhaps the best in the world so I have considered it.
So in conclusion, yes, I found my cocktails, and more. But if you’re thirsty, which undoubtedly we all are: DON’T PANIC. Just add ice and anything will taste better.
A blow up pool, a view of the bush, some mates. That’s bliss!

ARIES (MARCH 21 - APRIL 19)
Alright, Aries, the wet season is here, and you're about to stir up some serious mud! Get ready for new opportunities to flood your life like a big, ol’ tropical downpour. But, slow down—this is not the time to flounder around like a maniac. Remember, it’s okay to let the rain settle before you make a splash. You’ve got this, but take your time. Even the most fiery Aries needs to chill under a boab tree now and then.
TAURUS (APRIL 20 - MAY 20)
Taurus, honey, the wet season rains might be making things a little slippery, but you’re solid as a rock. Take a cue from those stubborn boulders you see dotting our horizon—you don’t have to move fast, it's still early days of 2025 after all. Just remember, there’s no rush. It’s not a sprint, darling, it's a scenic drive through the outback... but with air conditioning.
GEMINI (MAY 21 - JUNE 20)
Gemini, this wet season’s got you feeling a bit like a cyclone (and not the icy poly variety)—whirling around, changing direction at the drop of a hat. One minute you’re planning a new adventure, the next, you’re lying on the floor trying to catch your breath. Get your social calendar out because you’re about to be the life of the party. But don’t forget to take a breather every now and then. You don’t want to be too much of a whirlwind—there’s a fine line between fabulous and “please, not again.”
CANCER (JUNE 21 - JULY 22)
Listen up, Cancer! These overcast skies are making you feel all moody in the best way possible. You’re feeling nostalgic, perhaps still suffering from the hangover of the 2024 festive season, and that’s fine, but remember: the past isn’t going anywhere, so let’s focus on enjoying the present. Put your feet up, take a deep breath, and maybe even stop wishing for days gone by. It’s okay—there are better sunsets ahead.
LEO (JULY 23 - AUGUST 22)
Leo, darling, the universe is serving you up a five-star feast of adventure! The sunsets have been as fiery as your temper, and you’re about to shine like the Kununurra sun in the middle of the day. This is your time to strut your stuff. Go ahead, post that selfie by that waterfall—but don't get too full of yourself. Life out here can be wild, but so are you. Just remember, even lions need a cool off in the air con sometimes.
VIRGO (AUGUST 23 - SEPTEMBER 22)
Virgo, stop overthinking! The skies are opening up, and it’s time to stop obsessing over whether your work is ‘perfect’ and start enjoying the bloody rain. Sure, you’re always making lists (someone has to keep track of the social calendar), but it's okay to throw that notebook away for a bit and just bask in the chaos. Trust me, you’ll still be the most organised person in the room, even if you’re on holiday. Kick back and enjoy the show—there’s nothing like a good lightning storm to remind you that life’s a little wild sometimes.
LIBRA
(SEPTEMBER 23 - OCTOBER 22)
Libra, Libra, Libra, the universe is literally throwing a party just for you. The wet season’s setting the mood for social success, and you’re the life of the show—just make sure you’ll be welcomed back to Hotel Kununurra. Don’t be afraid to let your hair down and let loose. And if a little drama pops up? Channel your inner archer fish —swim with style, but don’t start spitting on people.
SCORPIO
(OCTOBER 23 - NOVEMBER 21)
These tropical storms are making your inner intensity feel even more, well, intense. It’s time for a major transformation, and I’m talking fullblown caterpillar-to-butterfly vibes. Just, like, don’t scare everyone with your sting. Embrace the new you, but maybe don’t unleash it in public until you've done a little soul-searching on your own. Take a quiet moment by the water—no one will judge you if you start to cry over the beauty of it all (we’re all crying inside, too).
SAGITTARIUS
(NOVEMBER 22 - DECEMBER 21)
Oh, Sagittarius, you wild adventurer! The wet season’s got you bouncing from one thing to another like a kangaroo on caffeine. Keep going—just don’t end up in a crocodile-infested river because you were too busy texting your mates. This is your time to travel, learn, and live your best life—just maybe not too far off the beaten path. A little risk is good, but don’t make your family start planning your rescue mission. Seriously, they’re already on high alert.
CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 22 - JANUARY 19)
Capricorn, it’s time to focus and get that ambition flowing like the mighty Ord River. You've got work to do, but just because you’re grinding doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. The land is thirsty for growth, and so is your career. But if you keep your eyes on the prize too much, you might miss the great fishing trip you could be taking with your mates. Find a balance. The barras don’t care for your deadlines, and honestly, neither should you—sometimes.
AQUARIUS (JANUARY 20 - FEBRUARY 18)
The ever-changing skies are sending your brain into overdrive, and you’re on fire! New ideas are flooding in like a serious downpour, so don’t let this wave pass you by. Dive into your wild, wacky projects, but don’t forget to consider the practicalities of, well, life—you can’t live on vibes alone. Don’t forget to take a break, or you might just end up inventing a new way to get yourself lost in the bush. Keep it cool, genius.
PISCES (FEBRUARY 19 - MARCH 20)
Pisces, you’re all zen like Lily Lagoon, but honestly, even you can’t stay in this calm for long. With the rain falling, your emotional depth is more intense than a salties stare. Take some time to meditate, maybe even by the water—just don’t go too deep. The last thing you need is to get caught in your own emotional undertow. Be a pelican—elegant, wise, and not afraid to fly away when things get too much. But don’t drown in your feels. There’s a world out there to explore.
