PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Expectations

Everyone’s world has changed. We really are living in the world of the instant – when information, even unverified, is transmitted in nanoseconds, only to be one-upped in seconds by the next tragedy. We live in a world where we have such polarization on virtually every topic and conversation is a macroaggression. We live in a world that has flipped economically, from prosperity to raging inflation. We live in a world which is truly global, in that one nation’s calamity ripples to all.

While change is expected and is to be seen often as both a threat and an opportunity, individuals often get a different view. Despite the corporate sponsored seminars and talking head TED talks about how we should embrace change, it is painful, and our expectations are pretty much always realized on this front. Rarely does anyone truly see the opportunity or realize the gain. In Medicine, one only must have experienced the EMR, in any way shape or form to understand the conundrum of opportunity and threat. To paraphrase Samuel Shem from the House of God – “show me an EMR that only triples my work and I will kiss its feet...”

No one expected the changes in Healthcare we have today. I know I certainly did not. We hear of the quiet resignation, but in healthcare today it is loud and clear – “I quit!” But why? I trained in the public inner city Charity Hospital – there were delays, supply shortages, volumes of patients exceeding beds – every day. What there was not, was a shortage of people caring for others. Their expectations were that their

Did You Know…..

care made a difference despite overwork, underpay and unreal and never funded administrative burdens. That was the value in their work and their lives.

Adults must see value in their work – a key element of adult learning and job satisfaction.

Is it the EMR sapping time, the countless “Doctor Death” stories, the legal system finding personal blame for nurses, the corporatization of care, the contrasting break of COVID (either overcapacity, super depressing or low volume relaxation)… I could go on with countless other aspects that have affected people, places, and processes. Quite frankly it does not matter why- we must adapt, improvise, and overcome for us to live up to our values and restore job satisfaction.

It is up to us to rewrite the narrative. I don’t expect people to be making TicToks, but we need to let our patients and future providers know it's not about cash or compensation, but about caring and compassion. In simple ways telling our patients we care – a few minutes extra in the exam room, setting expectations to get tests or procedures done, or even showing them your frustration with the system and engaging their support in system change. Every time I reread a book, I see something new - “Law XIII.

THE DELIVERY OF MEDICAL CARE IS TO DO AS MUCH NOTHING AS POSSIBLE” is from the House of God. We cannot do nothing anymore.

After 20 years at our Suburban Road location, the KAM Board of Trustees voted to move to a larger space to accommodate the growth that both the KAM and KAM Foundation has experienced in recent years. We are excited to announce that KAM is now located at 9032 Cross Park Drive, directly across from the Social Security office and on the bus line, which will fill a need for KAPA patients who need to enroll onsite. Additionally, we are pleased that we will now be able to host many of our membership events at our new facility as it has over 1800 sq. ft. of meeting space, something the KAM has not had since we were located downtown prior to 2002. If you get a chance, please come by and visit and one of the staffers will be happy to give you the tour. Or, be sure and attend Cocktails and Candy Canes on Friday, December 9, 2022, when KAM will host its first all-membership event in the new facility. For more information on Cocktails and Candy Canes, visit our website at knoxvillemedicine.org.

For the second year First Bank was the presenting sponsor for the KAMF’s Vitality Initiative Project (VIP) Conference that focuses on physician well-being. This year’s event was held at the Foundry and featured keynote speaker Mukta Panda, MD from the Chattanooga area. Dr. Panda is nationally recognized as a leader in the advancement of education on the subject of physician well-being and author of the popular book “Resilient Threads”. Physician attendees received a copy of Dr. Panda’s book courtesy of UPA. In addition, 2 hours of CME were issued to physician attendees.

This year’s Master of Ceremonies was KAM board member Jeff Gilbert, MD with Gastrointestinal Associates. Dr. Gilbert shared the importance of recognizing the impact that physician well-being plays and the negative impact it can have on ourselves, our employers, and the community before introducing Dr. Panda. He also an-

nounced the VIPs at Sea event, an 8 night cruise to Aruba, that will be held on February 25, 2023! This event will feature an opportunity to earn up to 23 hours of CME while focusing on rejuvenating the joy of practicing medicine and strengthening relationships. There are many unique opportunities as physicians across the state are invited to learn from our panel of speakers including: Edward Capparelli, MD - TMA President who ran on the platform of physician wellbeing, Mukta Panda, MD - whose brilliance in presenting and enlightenment have been nationally recognized, and world-renowned author and speaker Wayne Sotile, PhD.

Special programming will also feature opportunities for spouses to engage and build on tools that will help the medical marriage thrive. Space is limited, for more information or to book your cabin, go to VIPsAtSea.com

Sawyer Brown Band Performed for KAPA’s Boot Scootin’ Ball at Mill & Mine

If you have never attended the KAPA’s Boot Scootin’ Ball, then you have really missed something special! The Knoxville Academy of Medicine Foundation recently hosted this annual fundraising event with all proceeds going to Knoxville Area Project Access, which has coordinated more than $385 million dollars in donated care since 2006. Our special entertainment this year was the Sawyer Brown Band, who has had many chart-topping songs throughout the years. The event was held for the first time at the Mill & Mine, which proved to be an excellent venue for a dinner concert given excellent food offerings and concert facilities. Plus, Mill & Mine had a wonderful private lawn area in which we were able to arrange for a mechanical bull, compliments of Simpson’s Meats and the Walnut Kitchen. Many of the attendees tried took their chance with the mechanical bull but sadly, everyone was thrown! We are always grateful to our many sponsors including our Diamond Sponsors of FirstBank, Covenant Health Systems, The University of Tennessee Medical Center and Ole Smoky Moonshine!

If you are not currently participating in this program, contact KAPA Executive Director Danielle Sims at (865) 531-2766.

KAM host Tacos and Tequila Events for Residents and Student

Every year, shortly after the new group of UT Residents begin, KAM hosts the Tacos & Tequila event that encourages our resident members to get to know one another and build relationships that will last a lifetime. This year’s event, sponsored by First Bank, was held in the KAM parking lot with near record breaking attendance and featured festive music, a taco food truck and of course… tequila!

In October, KAM hosted the second Tacos and Tequila event this year but this occasion was for KAM medical students. The event, sponsored by Wealth Benefits Management, was held in

the parking lot of the new KAM building located on Cross Park Drive with an attendance of approximately 170 students. These events have been a staple welcoming event for new resident physicians for many years, as well as a popular event to introduce and encourage life-long membership amongst medical students and residents to organized medicine. KAM continues to provide opportunities for our members to engage in areas that they most enjoy; social, legislative, or educational, there is always something waiting to explore.

KAM/KAMA Picnic At the Park

This year the annual KAM KAMA picnic was held at Large Pavilion at McFee Park. This family friendly event was sponsored by First Bank and was well attended in spite of the threat of bad weather! Attendees enjoyed the opportunity, while the weather held, for the kids to play at the splash pad while others participated in the first KAM Corn Hole Tournament. As the tournament was unable to be completed due to inclement weather, the prizes were distributed to those that persisted to the end. Backyard Burgers

provided plenty of tasty food that all enjoyed and KONA ICE was on-site offering our group a full menu of favorites to cool off with. This annual event offers the opportunity for KAM and the spousal organization KAMA to join together to build stronger relationships between physician families in our community. If you were unable to attend, you are encouraged to join us at our many upcoming events in the future.

KAMA Corner

KAMA has no official meetings during the summer, but that doesn’t mean we haven’t been busy. KAMA members attended KAM’s Tacos and Tequila event for UT Residents as well as the annual KAM/KAMA picnic at McFee Park. What a fun evening for members and their families. Thank you so much for your hospitality and your support. KAMA Klimbers, led by member Caitlin Bishop Lowe hiked the Cucumber Gap Trail in the Smokies. The Book Club, led by member Lili Vincent met over the summer to discuss “All the Light We Cannot See,” “The Lost Apothecary,” and “The Silent Patient.” Additionally, KAMA’s Lunch Bunch enjoyed delicious meals and fellowship at several local restaurants. These are excellent opportunities for our members to connect and to support each other outside of our regular meetings.

Over the summer, members also continued to reach out to support the community. KAMA members Nancy Sewell, Sheila Barnett, Nancy Dudrick, Carolyn Cates, and Donna Brunson helped launch the Metropolitan Drug Coalition’s revised GenRx program that focuses on educating youth on correct prescription drug use and storage. Over seven sessions, 178 kids at the South Knox Boys and Girls Club, New Hopewell Elementary, Karns Elementary, and Brickey McCloud Elementary heard this important message.

One of our initiatives for the year is member recruitment, retention and involvement. To that end, KAMA hosted our first annual Neyland Stadium Tour and Tailgate. This membership recruitment event was held the Sunday before the first regular season UT Football game. In order to attend, KAMA members were asked to bring at least one potential new member. Attendees enjoyed traditional tailgate fare and private tours of the recent renovations at the stadium. This first-time event was a huge success thanks to Jacque Prince, Jackie Booth, Judy Akers, Susan Brown and their event committee with over 80 people attending.

At our first meeting of the year, Visit Knoxville helped members Explore Knoxville at the Copper Cellar West. In October, we were encouraged to Explore Volunteering by speakers from Mobile Meals and Random Acts of flowers.

Finally, KAMA members are busy preparing for this year’s Legacy Event – Doc Rock. Committee Chair, Mary Weiss and her team have secured a great line-up of physician bands to include Remedy, Whiskey Compass, Doctor Zoster and the Pox, No Recall, and BBS. We hope you will be able to join us January 28 for this fun filled evening supporting Interfaith Health Clinic, St. Mary’s Mobile Clinic, Metropolitan Drug Coalition, The Family Justice Center and KAPA.
