100 W MEN

WHO C ARE

100 WOMEN. 1 HOUR. 10,000 DOLLARS. LOCAL IMPACT. This group of women are committed to supporting our local community. They come from all walks of life and diverse backgrounds. We are a true “giving circle.” We are member operated and rely on 100+ members to consistently participate to impact our local community. Giving circles have formed all around the world to help make communities stronger in a tangible, visible way. This is a way to make your donations make a larger difference. Every quarter we will randomly draw 3 previously nominated nonprofits, and each organization will have a chance to share with us a specific need, project or goal. In 1 hour we will share, vote, and donate. Every member or member team is responsible for $100 each quarter. This giving circle operates on the honor system. We want to stress how important commitments play in the success of this Giving Circle. This is a group commitment, group impact – if you are in, you are in! We want to give as much as possible – TOGETHER. Picking and choosing when to vote and send your donation interferes with how the system works.

How does it work? Easy. We meet once a quarter somewhere in the Knoxville area. Here’s all you have to do: Show up. (Yes, that’s about it!) Bring a blank check for $100. (You can always give more.) Listen. A member of each organization will make a 5-minute presentation at the meeting about how our members’ contributions will support their cause. The non-profit organization with the most votes at the meeting receives all the checks, which members will make out at the meeting. What an impact! Vote. Smile. You just did something pretty powerful and amazing. Repeat. Four times a year, for a total commitment of about four hours. (We told you this was easy!) Fast. Simple. Effective. Women working together really can do just about anything!

NEXT GIVING EVENT:

When I first heard of this group, was back in 2016 and thought, hmm, is it some super secret high-society club? No! It’s for any and all who would love to support our local community! If you’re interested, keep reading!

Why Join? You believe women working together can achieve just about anything! You only have a few hours a year to commit to charity work. I

mportant! Do we truly today, in the times that we are living, understand this word. The definition states: “the state or fact of being of great significance or value.” It seems everything is significant or “important”, at least that is becoming the new perception. Even as I have tried to rush through the past couple months preparing to leave for Africa I have found myself overwhelmed and extremely aggravated, not being able to enjoy or savior each moment due to looking at all that has not been accomplished. I guess I lost focus of the “big picture”.Yes jobs\ work are important, and making sure you have purchased what you will need to prepare for your journey is important. However, in all the chaos I have caused myself, I lost the reason for the chaos, which is people. The people that have given their time to help, purchased items to give and taken their time to pray. Also, the people that I will encounter are important and deserve me to be at my best to help them, not stressed out because of them. So as you go through this summer whether preparing for a vacation or getting that check list marked off. Stop, take a moment and remind yourself of the meaning of the word. Because NOT everything is as important as we make it out to be. If we are able to discriminate between what truly matters and what truly doesn’t matter, we can relax and enjoy it more.

Mindset Shifts I’ve Been Making

Weeds or Wildflowers? Which are they?! Are they one versus another? Is one right and one wrong? I guess it depends on a lot of factors. If these are growing on a farm where cattle graze, they’re definitely considered a weed because the cows won’t eat them. If these are growing outside your door and you love them, then sure, they can be a pretty wildflower. One man’s weed is another man’s wildflower right?! These little yellow flowers got me thinking about perspective and how everything is different for everyone. Life doesn’t fit in this one size fits all bubble and we as humans definitely aren’t one size fits all. You can’t be a wildflower to everyone and you definitely can’t be a weed to everyone too. So YOU DO YOU. I’m letting these little flowers teach me to stop people pleasing and just allow me to grow and do and live as the little wildflower I am. Other wildflowers can come along with me and the people who think we’re weeds can move along! For once I’m just trying to embrace me. Stop comparing myself to others, stop worrying about other people’s paths and wondering if they should be mine. I’m just going to start doing my best, being me, and learning to grow to the best of my abilities. A few things I’ve really been working on and things that have helped me on this journey is by doing a lot of inward looking. I’ve been on a serious path to really finding and focusing on things that light me up. Things that get me excited and make me feel creative and happy. That’s where I’m able to grow and be me. That’s where I’m most creative and have the most fun. So I wanted to share 5 mindset shifts I’ve been making that help me be a more positive person overall. Some of these help keep me rooted in my purpose and allow me to be the best me.

These little shifts are making all the difference right now and for that, I’m so thankful! I’d love to hear some of your favorite mindset shifts too! Check out my blog at pearlsandtwirls.net 1) Instead of saying I have to do this, to I get to do this (this goes for work, my to-do list, my workouts and more!) 2) Instead of spending money on little things I don’t need, saving money for big things. 3) Instead of working more, working more timely. 4) Instead of planning everything, asking God to show me everything.

Lash Fairy Meet the lovely lash fairy of Vivify Salon, Heather Tackett. Heather has been a licensed cosmetologist since she was 18. “I started out doing hair and nails for the first couple of years, then just nails for the next 24 years. I competed on a national level in nail competitions in the late 90s, and had my nail art publish in Nails magazine many times.” She has owned 3 other salons over the years with her mom, Marlitt. First was Just imagine in Oak Ridge (she sold it but it is still in business), Talons Hair and Nail Boutique in Oak Ridge and Salon Performance in Jacksboro, TN. After 18 years doing nails, 60 plus hours per week, she developed carpal tunnel in both hands and had to cut back on the number of clients she could do in a week. Heather became a Realtor while operating her nail business. When she remarried to her current husband, Ray, he was a real estate broker as well, so they bought Rocky Top Realty when it closed all offices and had only their location in Andersonville, TN for 5 years, where she was the principal broker after her husband’s father passed away and Ray had to go run his dad’s machine shop. It became too much for her to run it and

work in the salon, which was her passion, so they sold it to one of her agents. At the same time they sold it, 2 weeks later, she bought the salon here in Knoxville [it was Capelli Bella at the time] and she was renting 2 rooms from the owners for nails and lashes. “Their lease was coming up in 2 weeks and they asked if i wanted to buy the salon because they weren’t going to continue. So i did, and remodeled and expanded and started my training program for lash artists. I have been doing lashes now for 6 years.” “I have been multi certified by 5 lash companies, Xtreme lash basic, advanced and volume (I was the first volume lash artist in Knoxville, 2nd in the state at that time), Flawless lashes by Loretta volume and mega volume and advanced certified, The Lash Institute in London mega volume certified, Mia Lash advanced certified, and Revolashion mega volume certified. Heather has become the expert in her field and has even created her own line of lash extensions called “Dolly Lash” and her own adhesive. Plus she has trained and launched lash careers for 16 lash artists. Some have worked at Vivify Salon, some just trained. So if you want the best, qualified, certified and all around amazing Lash experience, schedule your appointment today. Visit www.vivifysalon.com

Lifestyle Change I have many patients ask me, “What is the best way to keep my long term weight loss goals from taking the back seat to my busy family life?”. It is a question and struggle that almost all of us have had at some point. The best advice that I have is, in one word, “preplanning”. Yes, planning for the week ahead does take time and thought. As the week unravels, you will be singing your own praises because you were able to conquer time and logistic obstacles with healthy food alternatives. What I recommend to patients is, to grab some snack-sized seal-able bags and divide fruits, vegetables, pretzels, granola, etc. just before the week begins. Measuring out items into these bags provides you with a reasonable portion and you know exactly how many calories you are consuming. This is convenient for side items for a work lunch or for a snack while you play chauffeur to your children’s activity schedules. If you must grab something from fast food or at a restaurant, make good decisions. Choose a side salad instead of fries. Order your sandwich without cheese, mayonnaise, or other high calorie sauces. If there is not an option for a breaded bun substitute, only eat the top or bottom side of the bun. If you order a salad, make sure it isn’t covered with cheese, croûtons, bacon, and/or other high calorie/ fat items that sabotage the whole purpose of eating a salad. Make sure the salad has a lean protein on it if it is an entree. Only add small amounts of the dressing to the salad as needed, instead of the whole package. Chances are you won’t even use half of the portion provided to you, and you just saved yourself lots of calories. Small changes

add up to big results! Losing weight or maintaining your ideal weight is something that has to be pursued continually, even when family and work responsibilities demand your time and attention. The process of change and maintenance by means of goal-setting is ever-evolving and takes lots of re-evaluation. In order for something to work for you, it has to be adaptable to your personality, age, preferences, and yes… a busy schedule! Most importantly it is a must to have a support team that can help you along the way. Our team of healthcare professionals at Premier are ready to help you work through your plans to reach your goals. We find nothing more rewarding in our job than seeing our patients achieve their dreams, one goal at a time. Call Premier Weight Management today, and take the first step toward a healthier, happier you! Article written by Heather Whittemore, FNP-BC. Heather is a Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner, has a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a specialization in behavior modification, and has a diploma in Nutritional Counseling and weight loss. She also has advanced training in all medical aesthetic procedures offered at Premier. Spotlight on local Body Builder Bridget Reymond

W

hen I was younger, I never would’ve imagined myself stepping on stage in a bikini to compete as a body builder.

I

decided to compete for the first time in 2017. After over a year of working at my dad’s store (Eddie’s Health Shoppe), I was inspired by some of the other staff members who had competed in the past, including my dad. I started taking my training and nutrition very seriously, trying to build as much lean muscle mass while losing body fat by monitoring my calorie intake and lifting weights 5-6x a week, often going to the gym twice a day to fit in my extra cardio sessions. The feeling of stepping on stage for the first time was incredible; all the months of hard work and dedication were suddenly worth it. That is the main reason why I am currently preparing for another show this summer, to challenge myself and to bring an even better package to stage this year.

CBD has some amazing fitness and health benefits. CBD helps with inflammation naturally, without the harmful effects to your liver like popular anti-inflammatory medication. CBD has been shown to help some people get their sleeping back on track and can help lower anxiety. Another great benefit is weightloss. CBD has shown the ability to help regulate a person’s blood sugar levels. With regulated blood sugar levels there is less fat-storing hormones produced by the pancreas in a person’s body resulting in less fat being stored. Since more fat can be burned off as energy there will be less fat cells in a person’s body. Eddie’s offers a variety of CBD oils, ranging from full spectrum to THC free liquids, capsules, gummies, and vapes. We only bring in the highest quality products that have been thoroughly researched and third party tested.

D

evices are everywhere. According to a recent visual networking index forecast from Cisco, by 2021, there will be four networked devices and connections per person across the globe. Those figures are even greater in North America, where Cisco estimates each person will have 13 networked devices and connections by 2021. With all those devices, it’s no surprise that a greater number of people are embracing the smart home movement. Those who have yet to jump on the bandwagon can benefit from learning more about smart homes and why it’s intelligent to have a smart home. What is a smart home? According to SmartHomeUSA.com, the term “smart home” is commonly used to define residences in which appliances, lighting, heating and cooling units, televisions, computers, entertainment systems, and security systems are capable of communicating with one another. Each of these components can be controlled remotely, typically via a smartphone. Why is it smart to have a smart home? The benefits of a smart home are numerous, and will likely only multiply as people utilize more devices. · Time: A recent joint survey from CNET and Coldwell Banker found that 57 percent of Americans say that smart home technology saves them an average of 30 minutes per day. That’s an especially beneficial advantage for busy parents and/or professionals who find it difficult to juggle all of their daily responsibilities. · Money: Another benefit to smart homes is their cost savings. Because devices can be controlled remotely, smart home owners can adjust the temperatures on their heating and cooling units while away from home. That means they can arrive home each night to a comfortable home without having to run their HVAC systems all day while no one was home. In fact, the CNET/Coldwell Banker survey found 45 percent of Americans say that smart home products save them an average of $98.30 each month.

18

hushh magazine summer 2019

· Investment: Whether you’re a developer or a single-family homeowner, real estate is an investment. Making a home as appealing to prospective buyers as possible is a great way to get a better return on your real estate investment. The CNET/Coldwell Banker survey found that 81 percent of buyers would be more likely to buy a home if smart home products were already installed. That can make the market for your home more competitive, ultimately earning you more money at resale. Smart homes are both the present and the future. Homeowners who want to make their homes more livable today and more marketable tomorrow should consider investing in smart home products.

Items to get you started on creating your smart home

T

echnology has changed the way people live in the 21st century. Once ubiquitous, land lines anchored to kitchen walls have now given way to smartphones that can be taken anywhere. Bulky television sets that required at least two people to move have been replaced with high-definition offerings so light and thin they can be mounted on living room walls. It’s no great surprise that technology also is changing the physical places we call home. Smart homes are a rapidly growing trend. In a typical smart home, devices such as the thermostat, television and even the refrigerator can be controlled remotely through the internet. Converting an existing home into a smart home can seem intimidating, especially for people who don’t consider themselves tech savvy. But today’s user-friendly technology makes it relatively easy for anyone to turn his or her home into a smarter one. Before you get started, recognize that there are certain musthave items to turn a home into a smart home.

LUXURY LAKEFRONT SANCTUARY ON NORRIS LAKE AT AUCTION!

HUB The hub refers to software or hardware that connects all of your devices and gets them to work together. Think of the various devices you have and then think of their manufacturers. Chances are strong you have devices manufactured by various companies, and enabling those to work together might seem impossible. A hub does that work for you. And because they can be connected to your smartphone, hubs also make it possible to control devices while you’re away from home.

WIFI ROUTER Some people rent their routers from their internet/cable providers, while others buy their own routers. Regardless of which category you fall into, you’re going to need a good WiFi router to get your smart home up and running. Determine which type of WiFi your home currently has and then find a router that’s compatible with that WiFi. Request a list of routers that are compatible with your WiFi from your service provider, as not all routers will necessarily work with your internet connection. If possible, upgrade to the fastest WiFi your internet provider offers, as that will make your smart home that much more enjoyable and frustration-free.

DEVICES You won’t necessarily need to upgrade your devices to get a smart home. In fact, if you control or can control any device in your home with a smartphone, you are already on your way to having a smart home. Upgrading to a programmable thermostat that’s compatible with your smartphone might be a great idea if your current thermostat is old and not internet-compatible. With a programmable thermostat, you can control the temperature in your home remotely. That ensures the home is a comfortable temperature when you arrive home and allows you to turn off costly heating and cooling units when no one is home.

MITAL D. PATEL The attorney who cares... No really! Mital, a mom of 2 littles, prides herself in her zealous and individualized representation of her clients. "The greatest reward to being an attorney is recognized in those moments when you see your client after a resolution is reached with their legal problems. You realize that what you have done for them during what is often their most difficult time has not just been another job for me, but has profoundly effected someones future, their family and/or their business. And it is when that resolution brings them peace and clarity that I am reminded why I chose to practice law. "

ATTORNEY WITH HEART

To whom much is given, much is expected. This is the life motto 35-yearold attorney, Mital Patel, lives and works by. Ms. Patel had aspirations at a young age of becoming an attorney. Closely following her father’s every business move, she learned quickly the value of knowledge, and the burden of being entrusted with it. Ms. Patel grew up in the UK, but soon moved to the U.S. at age 12. She received her B.A. from The University of Mississippi in 2004, and earned her J.D. from The University of Mississippi School of Law in 2007. In just one year, she made partner at General Knox Law, P.C. (fka Hyman, Carter & Patel, PLLC). With honors and excellency, prestige would appear to be the top agenda of this resume, but Mital’s priority was

Written by Laura Cutbirth Photo by Chris Alley clearly marked by something greater. She knew she wanted to be an attorney, but knew that her approach would look very different. Starting out, Ms. Patel was faced with the intimidation of tenured colleagues, and what was previously a predominately male field. It may not have been the reality of her work environment, but Ms. Patel recalls on several occasions feeling the pressure of performance up against the attorneys boasting more years in practice of law. In retrospect, Mital sees that her fears were insecurities, and that her concerns were not ill founded, but rather misperceived. She soon stood in the confidence that she had earned her right of passage and that the years in the practice of

law did not necessarily translate to a better interpretation or application of the law. Thorough research, preparation and understanding of the facts as well as the law, has been the key to providing effective representation for her. Mital’s passion is to not only to provide clients the legal direction they needed, but also peace of mind by taking time to fully explain issues at hand. One of the greatest things that brings her pride, is when a client says, “oh I didn’t know that.” Education and knowledge are power, and Mital knows that while she provides clients with the legal application of their issue, she also brings a personal touch to the conversation. Ms. Patel has set herself apart from other attorneys by making

community. Ms. Patel has made it a personal goal to continue to contribute more of her time and resources to educating the community and arming individuals with the knowledge they need to make sound decisions for themselves, their families and/or their businesses. To establish this trust, Ms. Patel offers a flat rate billing structure for most cases. This way, there is not a surprise invoice arriving at the end of a long fight through the judicial system, whether victorious or not, just seems to suck the life right out of unsuspecting client. Although hourly rates are also discussed with clients, most opt for the flat rate billing structure so they can avoid time clocks ticking in the background, making her clients feel that less is more, because time is money. Mital understands that by allowing time for conversation, sometimes the most significant details are discovered. Ms. Patel has seen one too many cases lost over not enough time spent discussing details of the case because clients deemed them irrelevant or insignificant for time purposes. In stride with her work ethic, Ms. Patel’s lead motivation for work are her two children. Milana, 6, and Deven 8. They are her reason for being. She realized that perhaps their little eyes were greater judges and determiners of her success than any jury or judge in a courtroom.

sure that her clients know that she is there for them. She wants clients to feel that they are getting her undivided attention, and that they are not there to provide her a paycheck. Since Ms. Patel began practicing law, the initial consultation with an individual has always been treated as an opportunity to educate and allow sound decision making with how to proceed with legal matters. In more recent years, Ms. Patel has had numerous requests and opportunities to take this educational approach to a much larger audience by presenting at Estate and Trust planning seminars, Parenting Classes, discussing Fathers Rights to groups of young men and lecturing on various legal issues with groups of other professionals in

Along with being a mother, Mital serves in several other capacities. She is one of 50 women in Knoxville to serve on the Woman’s Coalition Against Cancer. She also teaches Junior Achievement classes for youth regarding business, careers, trade, voting, working, and money management. Mital enjoys spending her free time exploring and experimenting with healthy eating options along with fitness related activities. She has been able to enjoy and share these interests with a Fitness Challenge group she started this year that now boasts 25 other strong and successful women. “Reaching a goal or living your best life alone is doable, but try it with a tribe of other successful, positive women and it is a game changer.” Ms. Patel’s practice areas are: Business Law, Estate Planning and Trust, Family Law, Probate Law, Civil Litigation and Appellate practice. Her dedication to serving her clients as well as Knoxville, is what has made her standout as the attorney with heart.

Where oh where should my oil get changed... The debate may continue as to whether a car still needs its oil changed every 3,000 miles or if motorists can extend that figure to more than 5,000 miles. In addition to how frequently oil needs to be changed, drivers also must decide where to go for an oil change. Customers have different choices when it comes to oil changes. Some don’t mind getting a little messy and choose to change their oil right at home. There are also lube stations that specialize strictly in oil changes. Then there is the option of having the oil changed at a dealership service station. As with any decision, it helps to weigh the pros and cons of each option before making a final decision. According to the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act of 1975, routine service can be done anywhere and will not void your warranty. Only regular warranty work has to be done by the dealer. Unless a dealership can prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that damage was caused by a vehicle owner or a thirdparty lube station, then the warranty will remain valid. And remember, while there are many places that are qualified, it’s up to the driver to decide where to go, as for us though, we trust Midas.

DEALERSHIP

There are certain reasons a person may want to go to a dealership to have an oil change. It is typical of dealer service stations to train their mechanics in the specific design of the automobiles they are servicing. That means they’ll have first-hand knowledge and be familiar with the design of the engine and the characteristics of the make and model of the car better than anyone else. This can give drivers peace of mind that they are getting the right parts and that the service work is being done in accordance with their service warranty. Some dealerships also offer service plans that discount the cost of oil changes if done at the dealer service station. This service package might even be part of a finance deal, so the cost of the oil changes could already be paid for. The oil changes may be done in conjunction with other service work, including tire rotation.

THIRD-PARTY STATION

One of the main advantages to using a private lube-type company is that they are usually less expensive than services provided by a dealership. Quick lube stations typically have access to manufacturers’ data to ensure the correct type of oil and filter are used. Larger companies like Midas, may have an extensive training program that goes over the latest technology and the models of cars. Another benefit to a lube station is that an appointment is not always necessary, which may not be the case with a dealership. With a number of service bays and substantial staff on hand, there also could be a shorter wait time, which is a boon to busy individuals.

SELF-SERVICE

Doing an oil change at home is obviously the most cost-effective option. But it’s the most labor-intensive as well. You also will need to have specific tools for the job, as well as 5 to 6 quarts of motor oil on hand. Jacking up the car to have access to the underside of the engine will be necessary so that you can reach the engine pan plug to drain the old oil. Wrenches as well as buckets to drain the oil are other tools to keep on hand. Used motor oil is not something that can simply be tossed in the trash or poured down a drain. It must be carefully contained and recycled to avoid harming the environment. Because of the work involved in an oil change at home, many people opt to have it done elsewhere.

Outdoor Games for Summer

FUN

Celebrate the outdoors this summer with classic games that get everyone involved.

Anyone will get a kick out of this classic table game blown up to build the excitement. The jumbo-size blocks stack more than 4 feet high, but they can go upwards of more than 5 feet with a booster pack.

1

Play is deceptively simple once you create your tower - just pull one block out and place it on top of the pile during your turn. But beware: The pile gets more and more precarious as you go! When a player topples the tower or causes a block to fall, he or she loses, and the game is over, but see how quickly everyone can put it back together. You can play solo, or groups can get in on the action. You can find a variety of “Jenga” brand sets at stores or online, or get an unfinished set from Joann’s and make your own. You can paint the ends, or get really crafty and use a wood burning kit to take it to the next level.

by Nicole Price Fasig For countless people of all ages, favorite summer memories include whiling away long afternoons in the backyard, frolicking in the surf at the beach or kicking a soccer ball around the field. Such great memories tend to have one thing in common: a beautiful day and outdoor fun to soak up every minute of the season. In addition to being a whole lotta fun, playing outside helps kids socialize and build strength and cardiovascular fitness. And studies have shown that when kids are more physically active at home, they’re more likely to be active when they go back to school - which is linked to all sorts of learning and developmental benefits. Why not get the entire family involved? There’s a whole new class of outdoor lawn games - plus updates to classic - that everyone can enjoy. In the spirit of summer, we present five great games to inspire you.

spikeball

Nothing will get your crew moving quite like Spikeball, which is described by the makers as a mash-up of volleyball and four square. All you need are three Spikeball balls, a net that looks like a miniature trampoline and plenty of space. Generally playing in two teams of two, you set up on opposite sides of the net. Play begins when one player serves the ball down into the net so it bounces up at the opposing team. The two players then have three hits between them to get the ball back to the net. Things get really interesting once the ball is served: There are no set sides for each team, so players can move 360 degrees around the net during play and hit the ball in any direction. Points are scored when the other team hits the ball into the ground or rim of the net, or it bounces more than one time on the net. You can play to any set score, and the winning team must win by at least two points. style | shop | fit | home | cover | drive | outdoors | travel | eat | events | art

Cornhole or bean bag toss, is a classic tailgate and backyard game that doesn’t require a ton of space. While the American Cornhole Association (ACA) dictates that there be 27 feet between boards, you can set up a smaller court for littler players and shorter tosses.

badminton

Play one-on-one or split up into doubles. The game is a mix between tennis and volleyball, with one player or team serving, and then both sides attempting to keep the shuttlecock aloft for the length of play. Each side may hit the shuttlecock only once to get it over the net and, while serves must be underhand, you can hit any way you like after the rally gets going. You score a point on your turn if the other side lets the shuttlecock hit the ground or hits it out of bounds, and games go to 21. In a time crunch? Play to a lower number, such as 15. You can pick up badminton sets at your local sporting goods store or online to get started!

Badminton’s origins come from “battledore and shuttlecock,” a game that used small rackets called battledores, and shuttlecocks, or birdies, each made from a cork with 16 or more overlapping feathers.

corn hole

Older kids will love a rousing game of backyard badminton. You’ll need plenty of space to set up a regulation court, which is roughly 44 feet long by 20 feet wide, but if you’re not worried about following tournament rules, any rectangular space should do. A standard net is just over 5 feet high, and you’ll need badminton rackets and a couple of shuttlecocks to go with it.

You can play one-on-one or team up in doubles. ACA rules say that players must remain within the “pitcher’s box,” a space roughly even with the length of the board and extending 3 feet on either side. On their turn, players toss the bag underhand without stepping out of the pitcher’s box. Bags that land on the opposite board are worth one point, and bags that go into the hole on the board garner three points. Players from each side alternate, giving them a chance to knock any stray bags off the board or into the hole before all the bags are thrown. The game continues until one side reaches or exceeds 21. You can purchase bags online from the ACA or other game makers, DIY, or you could even do a little of both: Find plain boards online and add your own designs, or buy colorful fabric and sew your own bags to personalize your set. Don’t want to get your own set? Make it a night at Full Service BBQ - they have boards & bags for you to play while you eat & drink.

giant dice With giant dice, the options are endless. Whether you’re trying to see who can roll the highest number or teaching simple math through play, there are all sorts of rules you can come up with to make dice fun – and keep kids rolling and chasing the giant cubes. In one of the popular games, “Pig”, players roll a single die rather than two. During each player’s turn, he or she can keep rolling and accumulating points – as long as a one doesn’t pop up – or choose

to end the turn. If a player rolls a dreaded one, the turn is over, no new points are scored, and play passes to the next person. The first to reach 100 wins! You can find lawn dice online or make your own with materials you might already have around the house. For example, just wrap a cube-shaped box in red or white heavyweight wrapping paper, and glue on circles from one to six in a contrasting color on each side. Then let the dice roll and the fun begin!

Dice, considered the oldest gaming implements known to man, have been used for centuries. During ancient times, they were made from bone or shells and used for divination.

Zucchini-Ricotta Pizza Ribbons of zucchini and bright cherries bursting with flavors are the perfect pair for this creamy ricotta base. Keep it easy: Roll the dough out on parchment paper, and place the paper right on the hot pizza stone.

Ingredients 2 cups warm water (100 to 110 degrees fahrenheit) 3 1/2 teaspoons dry yeast 2 teaspoons sugar 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt, divided 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 23.75 ounces white whole-wheat flour (about 5 cups) Cooking spray 1 pint cherry tomatoes, halved 1 tablespoon canola oil, divided 3/4 cup part-skim ricotta cheese 3 tablespoons finely chopped fresh basil 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh mint 2 tablespoons 1% low-fat milk 1 garlic clove, grated 2 medium zucchini, shaved (about 2 cups) 2 ounces feta cheese, crumbled (1/2 cup)

W

hat kind of pizza do you want?

It’s a simple, common question that most pizza-loving Americans don’t give nearly enough thought, usually tossing off a halfhearted “pepperoni, I guess,” or worse, mumbling something about avoiding gluten. The pizzaverse is vast and varied, and even its most voracious eaters likely haven’t sampled all the palate-pleasing styles out there. “Whatever, I’ve been to Chicago,” you say. YOU KNOW NOTHING. Have you been to Valley Forge, the old mining town in Pennsylvania with a delicious pizza style all its own? Have you ever had a pizza where the crust came out of a deep fryer? Have you frequented places where they swear by putting the cheese on cold after the crust is cooked? If you answered “no” to any of these, it’s clear you need to add some entries to your pizza bucket list. Luckily, we’ve dug deep on all the different styles of pizza you need to try before your pizza-eating life is complete. Sure, certain pizza purists will cast a skeptical eye at certain pizza permutations and derisively deem them “not pizza,” but we believe the glorious trinity of cheese, sauce, and carbs deserves to be celebrated in all its forms. Here are the 5 most compelling ways we consume pizza, from tried-and-true traditions to burgeoning trends that might soon occupy an oven (or better yet, stomach) near you. Dig in.

BAGEL What it is: The pizza bagel is -- simply -- traditional pizza toppings on a (usually) toasted bagel. And when pizza’s on a bagel, you can eat pizza any time. Where to get it: Noah’s New York Bagels, 1000 Volunteer Blvd, UT - Knoxville (Glocker Bldg), Knoxville, TN 37996 www.noahs.com

BREAKFAST What it is: The pizza “vehicle” is used to facilitate traditional breakfast foods in order to fashion a pie worthy of the day’s most important meal. You don’t have to eat this pie in the morning, but it’s definitely become a brunchtime staple. Where to get it: The Tomatoe Head, 2 locations, 12 Market Square & 7240 Kingston Pike www.thetomatoehead.com CALIFORNIA What it is: Generally wood-fired close to Neapolitan. But like the rad new kid from Malibu who shakes things up at a stuffy new school in a classic movie, it doesn’t play by the rules. California has to do with toppings. Using ultra-fresh ingredients and putting things like broccoli and fennel on pies. Where to get it: Blaze Pizza, 2 locations, 10978 Parkside Dr., 113 N. NEAPOLITAN What it is: It is, quite literally, the granddaddy of all pizza. This is the pizza as it was originally intended. The tops of the pies are commonly peppered with fresh tomatoes, herbs, and other veggies, with a thin layer of red sauce, and a relatively sparse application of cheese (the iconic margherita being the most popular preparation). Cooked inside wood-fired ovens, this is as “traditional” as pizza can get.. Where to get it: A Dopo Pizza 516 William Str. Knoxville www.adopopizza.com

NEW YORK What it is: Simply put: This is pizza. When you conjure an image of the Platonic ideal of what pizza should be, you’re probably visualizing a box full of New York slices. Hand-tossed, round pies with a thin(ish), crispy crust, featuring a light layer of heavily seasoned tomato sauce, topped with gooey, “pull-able” mozzarella cheese, and commonly served via solo slice and topped with pepperoni. This is pizza as you know it. Where to get it: Gavino’s Pizzeria Restaurant, 2 locations; 11316 Parkside Dr & 5211 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, www.gavinospizzeria.com

“I love being able to meet everyday women and show them a side of themselves they don’t get to see often if at all. We have this idea that only certain types of women can feel like this. The ones who are “already glamorous”. It’s not true. My client saw her beautiful photos and said, “I love them! I’m not sure they look like me.” Trust me, it’s you. I told her, “Maybe you need to get used to how others see you, which can often be different from how we see ourselves.” . I am told how beautiful I am everyday... You think I feel like it at 6am when I get up to take my kid to school and my hair looks like Dragon Ball-Z? Do you think I feel glam when I am rushing through the day running errands? Or how about when I finally take a long look in the mirror and the body I see is no longer the size it was when I was in my 20s and I barely recognize it? Even with all this, my husband calls me beautiful and so do my family and friends. I just had a recent photo shoot for myself and when I see the photos... I definitely look different than the person I see in the mirror. I know that’s me though. Shining brightly and doing me. I love showing other everyday women like me what I see. I also love the inner transformation that happens once they finally see what I see.” Beauty/Muse: Jessica Marsh Hair and Makeup: Jessica Marsh.

Photography was in her blood, but it waited awhile for her to embrace it. When Jasmine was asked as a child, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”, photography was always second to last on the list. She always dreamed of being a singer, actor, writer, play for the WNBA, teacher, photographer, or lawyer, literally in that order. “Let’s be real, I wanted to be Beyonce”, of course what women doesn’t- right? She per sued music early on, even had a song on the radio which led her to becoming a radio DJ in Greenbay, WI. She’s performed in a gospel group, has done allot musically, then she became a mom and just didn’t want to do music anymore. As for the second on the list, acting, she always wanted to be like Angela Bassett or do action movies like Fast and the Furious, and she’s done a few things through Jupiter Entertainment here in Knoxville but acting never just “bloomed”. Now as for the third, “I’m a really good writer, I’ve written poetry, stories, but however I have this really bad case of writer’s block- I leave people hanging all the time. That’s not a really good thing if you want to be a writer! As far as the WMBA, yea I’m too short for that- I’m 5’3”. And then as for a teacher- Yea [not thrilled with] kids, well except teenage kids, I love that age! I feel like I could’ve been a really cool counselor. And basically why lawyer is on the list is because I like to talk, and I like to get my point across and I’m not going to stop until you get my point, I just didn’t want to do all those years of school.” So that leaves photography. “I discovered when I was about 10 years old, my step-dad got me my first Kodak camera. I spent allot of time taking pictures everywhere. Now, everybody back then used to say “Oh you have an eye for taking pictures”, and I never really understood what that meant. But now- I totally get it, I understand now. But it wasn’t what I was trying to do. So photography didn’t really “poke it’s head” at me as a serious thing until about 4 years ago. Jasmine had an experience that just opened her eyes to her everyday job in customer service, that “This isn’t what I

want to do anymore”. Customer service was the only thing on her resume. “So my friends were like, “Why don’t you do photography?”, I thought it was the most hilarious thing. I was just like, “Well you know Angelica, if I’m going to do photography, I’d probably want to know how to do it, I probably need to know something about photography and business if I’m going to start a photography business and I know zip about either one of those.” So I thought it was ridiculous but my friends just kept telling me that I should try to look into it. I did have a camera at that time, just because I was doing Youtube videos for my channel. The only thing I knew how to do on that camera was press record and that was it. So I had a friend show me how to use the rest of the buttons on the camera, I spent about a month practicing, taking pictures for free. Then one month and one week from leaving her profession of customer service in April 2015, she started J Way Photography, which is when Hushh first came into contact with Jasmine through Gage Talent’s Knoxville Fashion Week’s designer Angel Blanco. We even featured one of her photos of his 2017 “Me, Myself and I” collection on the front cover in spring 2018, and have been obsessed with her ever since! We have watched her come in to her own, really just shine. Her photography isn’t just your average portrait, she finds your inner essence. You can see it captured in each photo she takes. Her portrait she took on the left won a silver award and 2nd place in Contemporary Portrait at the 2017 Portrait Masters International Competition hosted by Sue Bryce Education, plus 3 bronze awards in contemporary portrait & creative portrait that same year, as well as a bronze award in children’s portrait in 2018, so others are recognizing it now too. She truly has a gift and loves bringing that out in her clients. And her new business name reflects exactly as we see her. “When I started out over 3 years ago, I was in a bit of a rush. I really didn’t spend too much time thinking about the name of my new business, I came up with it on the fly. The idea was basically: J = Jasmine and I like things my way. J Way Photography.Yep… that was it. But I felt myself outgrowing it, that it no longer fit. So a change was needed. I wanted to personalize it and make it my own since I have pretty much decided that I want to be a photographer until I’m gone from this earth. [Javon Renee are both my middle names.] Javon Renee Portraits. I said it to myself over and over again. It sounded beautiful, unique and luxurious. Which is exactly how I want my clients to feel.” Getting to spend this time with Jasmine and learning more about who she is, what inspires her, where she sees herself headed, has been one of my favorite interviews. She has a way that makes you feel like long lost friends and her love and passion for what she does just comes though. If you would like to see more of her work, schedule a consultation or just stalk her like we did... follow her on Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest or visit www. javonreneeportraits.com

In fact, that feeling is actually what got me here. It’s what put me on the path of becoming a photographer. As a wife, mother, and woman, I know what it’s like to look in the mirror and see nothing but flaws. I know how it feels to see only my imperfections, my pain, my stress, my struggles and my doubts. For so long, I struggled to see myself as beautiful and to know my true worth. I had issues figuring out who I was in this world and what my purpose should be. Through his patience, encouragement, and love, it was my husband who helped me to discover all this beauty that had been hiding behind the stress. As I began to unfold from the lies of the mirror, I discovered a dormant passion for creativity inside of me. Photography soon became one of the many expressions by which I sought out beauty--I found it and called it my own. One of my favorite parts of this unique creative process has been capturing the extravagant beauty of both women and men who have felt ordinary, average, un-photogenic and ... not enough. It is so life-giving to watch them “find their beautiful,” just like I found mine.
