Across America, the arts spark economic growth. Arts anchors draw the crowds that attract the businesses that drive the development of entire cities. Here at home, the Civic is one of those anchors.

2

Dear Friends, You know us as a gathering place, a cultural landmark, a stage. Yet our true value lies in our greatest role: authentic community development. Using arts, culture and entertainment, we spur growth that extends far beyond a single concert or event. By once again drawing record crowds downtown in our 2018-2019 season, we created $8.1 million in economic impact and catalyzed development on our Main Street block.

Sincerely,

Our family programming offered an event and a price point for everyone, ensuring a diverse audience from all walks of life. As a non-profit, we’re particularly proud of our collaboration with other non-profits, enabling them to participate in Akron’s growth. Thanks to that access and affordability, more people visited not only the Civic but local restaurants and watering holes, entertainment venues and shops. That added traffic adds up to 237 Akron jobs.

Candice Carlyon

All this would not be possible without the support of our visionary donors. Our $8.5 million capital campaign leverages Akron’s $40 million investment in our block, allowing us to create memories for generations to come. We invite you to discover the local productions, immersive events and national acts that embrace our community’s creativity and drive our shared growth.

President, Board of Directors

Howard Parr Executive Director

Akron Civic Theatre Capital Campaign

AkronCivic CivicTheatre TheatreCapital CapitalCampaign Campaign Akron

WE’RE BUILDING THE NEXT GENERATION OF MAIN STREET MEMORIES. Our downtown is on the cusp of a major redevelopment. The Akron Civic Theatre is playing a leading role with an $8.5 million transformation. For 90 years, we have awed and entertained generations of families. Our Capital Campaign builds on that rich history, ensuring it endures for generations to come.

16

M OR E SEATS AND E V E N TS W IL L D RAW M ORE D O LLA R S DO W N TOW N. We’re completing our renovation and expanding our performance space to attract more acts (and dollars) to Akron. That includes a brand new, more intimate performance venue. We’re also expanding our outdoor presence to encourage public access to the arts and create the kind of mixed-use arts district that’s key to urban development.

The campaign builds on our $8.1 million annual economic impact in exciting ways. Restoring the “people’s theater” is a point of pride for Akron. Since 2002, our community has invested over $22 million to update this beloved local landmark. Donations will cover restoration of our Grand Lobby and Arcade in all their original Moorish beauty and style. An intimate new 200+ seat performance space offers a brand new way to enjoy the Civic. Our new venue in the adjacent Whitelaw

building will allow us to host 100 smaller events per year and free up our main stage for an additional 20 full-theater events. Outdoor decks will create a welcoming space to relax with friends and family. It’s all part of our plan to expand the way the public interacts with the Civic and surrounding downtown venues. We’ll broadcast select shows on a huge outdoor digital screen, allowing outside access to our programming. We’ll also share events via live Facebook broadcasts, podcasts and more. Enjoy digital and traditional art on our South Main and Bowery Street walls. Murals will transform the neighborhood by day and the walls will come alive at night with lighting and video art. The digital overlays can even be used to celebrate community events. 17
