about Knowla Livestock

LEFT TO RIGHT: JACK, GEORGIA,

& ANNIE

Knowla Livestock is a family owned and operated livestock company situated on the headwaters of the Barrington River at Moppy, west of Gloucester. Run by James and Annie, alongside Ted and Alison, Knowla Livestock is very much a family affair, with the next generation, Sandy, Doug, Rob, Jack, & Georgia, all sharing a passion for the land. The Moppy valley, whilst it is undulating to steep grazing country, it is ideal for cow calf production. The focal point is the annual production sale held on the last Friday in July. 85 bulls are offered, as well as a selection of stud heifers and 100 ready to join EU accredited Angus commercial females.

The family manages 280 registered females and approx. 500 commercial cows and progeny. Our commercial breeding program drives the selection pressures that shape our seedstock herd, with all selection decisions based on proven commercial attributes. All walking sires used within our seedstock herd, are also exposed to equal numbers of commercial cows, ensuring our genetics remains directly aligned with the requirements of commercial producers.

We are firm believers in the importance of recording every measurable trait, and we actively participate in recording traits for research breeding values, like mature cow body composition. As early adopters of genomic testing, our entire seedstock herd is sire verified with genomic enhanced breeding values. In addition to this, all animals are independently structurally evaluated.

At Knowla Livestock, we aim to provide a balanced blend of phenotype and genotype in a functional package, ensuring consistent quality and reliability for our clients.

laurie Family History

After 99 days at sea, Joseph Laurie arrived aboard the Herald on 15th July 1841 with his family, following the move of his daughter, who had previously immigrated to Australia from Stobo House, Peeblesshire, Scotland. Joseph sought work with the Australian Agricultural Company (AACo), where several of his sons were also employed. In 1849, AACo exchanged its Port Stephens and Manning Valley holdings for land beyond the ranges, and Joseph left to purchase land at Rawdon Vale, near Gloucester. This land would later be passed to his son, Alexander Thompson Laurie.

Alexander, who arrived in Australia at 12, and his brother Thomas travelled to California’s goldfields in 1849. They returned just in time for the Australian gold rush in 1851, having success again. Alexander made Rawdon Vale prosperous, eventually managing 54,000 acres across the Gloucester district. He married and had four children, but his wife Jane tragically passed away after their fourth child, James Renwick Laurie, was born in 1859.

In the mid-1880s, James selected land at Moppy, known today as Kholwha. He and his wife, Jesse Farley, moved to Moppy where children six and seven were born. They sourced timber for their new house at Maudville at Gloucester River, where they eventually had 11 children!

Born in 1898, their second youngest child, Edmund Clyde “Ted” Laurie, was key to expanding the beef enterprise at Moppy. He and his brothers cleared timber in the valley. Ted and his wife, Alice, lived at Maxwelton along the Gloucester River, where they had two daughters and two sons. Their youngest son, Clifton Allen Laurie, returned after high school in Maitland to continue farming alongside his brother Harry. Together these brothers made large improvements to Moppy. Originally, fattened bullocks were driven by horses and dogs to Gloucester, then loaded onto trains bound for Maitland or Sydney markets, a three-day journey with overnight stops.

Cliff married Marie Maslen in 1957, and they moved to Moppy, where he built a new house for her. They had three children: Joanne, James, and Edmund (Ted). Trips to town were rare due to the 26 gates Marie had to open and close. All three children were homeschooled before attending boarding school in Sydney. Joanne later pursued nursing, while James and Ted returned to Moppy to continue the family’s cattle breeding legacy. Cliff passed away in 1992, but his sons carried on his work.

James married Annie Roberts in 1990 and had three sons: Sandy, Doug, and Rob. Ted married Alison Webeck in 1995 and had two children: Jack and Georgia. And here we are today!

devon The Years

During the 1960s and 1970s, we ran a Devon-Shorthorn rotation crossbreeding system aimed at producing heavy, grass-fattened Jap ox. All bulls were purebreds of either breed, and the cow herd was crossbred and grouped according to age. Fifty percent of our turn-off went through the saleyard system, with the remainder consigned directly to abattoirs. Without a doubt, in 1979, we were very much production-oriented and price takers in an era when “the biggest and fattest was best.”

The Kholwha Devon stud was established in 1978, predominantly based on Wombramurra bloodlines, to supply this commercial herd. A record price of $3100 was paid at the 1978 Wombramurra sale for Wombramurra Zero 81st, who became the stud’s foundation sire. The stud was soon active in the show ring, winning our first Sydney Royal Best Exhibit ribbon in 1982 with Kholwha Nobleman 3rd. Zero 81 went on to produce three separate Sydney Grand Champion females. In 1984, Westcout Baron 4th was purchased, and he bred exceptionally well with these Zero 81 females.

Through the late 1980s, Kholwha Devon bloodlines were major influencers in the Devon breed, with the stud exhibiting annually at the Sydney Royal Show and winning the Most Successful Exhibitor and Best Exhibit awards on numerous occasions. At the largest led showing of Devon cattle seen in Australia, the 1988 Devon World Conference held at the Sydney Show, Kholwha exhibited the Grand Champion female and Junior Champion bull. At the 1990 Sydney Show, all four champions were Kholwha exhibits. While utilizing the show ring, performance recording was not ignored, and Kholwha participated in the inaugural Devon Group Breedplan sire summaries produced in the late 1980s.

The stud sold bulls at the annual all-breeds Gloucester bull sale, which, in those days, was a three-day event with up to 500 lots catalogued, with Herefords being the main contributors. A son of Zero 81, Kholwha Cavalier 3rd, was Grand Champion at the 1986 Gloucester NSW Devon Show and Sale, setting an all breeds Gloucester record by selling for $7400. Baron 4th sons were the top sellers at five successive Gloucester NSW Devon Show and Sales, including Kholwha Buster, who set another all breeds record by selling for $12,500 at the 1988 sale. This record stood for 24 years, until it was closely challenged in 2006 by the Angus bull Knowla Zodiac Z38, who established an Angus record selling for $11,500.

angus Evolution

The 9th of March 1995 marked the beginning of a new chapter for us, as Knowla Gold Q1 was born, the first animal to carry the Knowla prefix. A month later, two more calves arrived, twin ET heifers, Q3 and Q4. These two heifers would go on to establish what became our Sal line of females, a tribute to Sally Chapel of Dulverton Angus, where the embryos originated from. On the 1st of May 1995, a full brother to Q3 & Q4 was born, Knowla Just New. Just New was a son of New Trend 315 out of Dulverton Quinte J11 that went on to win Reserve Senior Champion bull at Sydney Royal. By year’s end, six calves were born and carried the Knowla name, marking the start of our journey into the Angus breed.

The same year, Ted and Alison tied the knot, and with their wedding came an unexpected gift, one single embryo from Chris Knox and Helen Alexander of DSK Angus. Against the odds, it took, and in June 1996, Knowla Panda R1 was born. Sired by Black Velvet Willy Boy J31 out of Te Mania Panda E12, Knowla Panda R1 left a lasting mark, producing 10 calves in the herd, including influential daughters like Panda Y29 & A41. She became a true matron of the herd, and today, the Panda line remains one of our most impactful, producing sale toppers and industry AI sires, like Knowla Monty M186.

KNOWLA MONTY M186

angus Evolution

As the years passed, the herd steadily grew, and by 2000, 26 calves were registered in that year. On October 15, 2000, an ET heifer calf was born - one that would go on to become our most prolific and impactful female, Knowla Designer V96. Little did we know then just how influential she would be. V96 was a direct daughter of the prolific donor, Forres Burnette P5, by P A R B Design Plus 97. As of today, a total of 31 progeny have been born, with all 10 daughters retained. Many went on to become influential females and donors such as Designer A55, B14, C16, C19, D19 & E29. V96 consistently stamped her sons with strength and power, producing numerous sale-topping bulls that have gone on to play significant stud roles. Her first standout son, Knowla Zenith Z40, was sold privately as a yearling in 2005 for $15,000 to the Wise family of Glenisa Angus in Queensland.

A flush to Ardrossan Admiral A2 proved to be truly exceptional, producing standout sons such as Crusader C21, Cavalier C17, Dambuster D17, and Expo E30. However, its greatest impact came through the influential females it produced, including Designer C16, D19, and E29, who left a lasting mark on the herd. This influence is evident in a grandson of Designer C16, Knowla So Right S48, who set a stud record when he sold for $190,000 at the 2022 sale to Gerald Spry of Sprys Angus and Tony Rutter of Cottage Creek Angus. So Right S48 now stands as the resident herd sire for the Sykes family at Mawarra Genetics. To this day, Knowla Designer V96 holds the record for producing the most progeny of any female we’ve ever owned or bred. She was truly one of a kind!

The introduction of the Burnette cow family into our herd began in 1996 with the purchase of donor dam Forres Burnette F62. Interestingly, her sire, VPI Lord Patriot 9025, was the first Angus bull imported live from America to Australia in the early 1980s by the Gubbins family of Te Mania Angus. In 2001, Forres Doris U149 was added to the herd, a daughter of Forres’ leading donor Doris M50, sired by Krugerrand of Donamere 490. U149 became the foundation female of our Kruger line, with her influence most notably carried through her daughter, Knowla Kruger W44. A son of W44, Knowla Anzac A24 was retained for stud duties in 2006. Two other cow families that have made a lasting impact on our herd and are widely recognised within Australian Angus circles, the Jedda and Dandaloo cow lines. In 2004, we purchased Forres Jedda X77, establishing our Jedda cow family and then in 2012, DSK RR Dandaloo F40 was acquired, laying the foundation for our Dandaloo line.

Together, from the birth of our first purebred Angus calf to the introduction of influential cow families, these early foundations have shaped Knowla into what it is today. As we reflect on the past, we are proud of what has been built and excited for the future generations of females that will continue to carry the Knowla name forward.

ENVIRONMENT Our

Nestled in the foothills of the Barrington Tops, the topography at Moppy ranges from steep to undulating hills, with small flats along the river. Our environment features late summer to autumn-dominant rainfall, with an annual average rainfall of 35-40 inches (1000 mm). We are situated at the head of a large catchment area, with three freshwater rivers flowing through the property and ample spring-fed creeks and dams, making water availability and reliability a huge asset to production.

We experience a notable variation in temperature throughout the year, getting as cold as -5°C (23°F) in the winter and as hot as 43°C (110°F) in the summer. Our country sits at approximately 1,2003,000ft above sea level, just enough elevation for an occasional dusting of snow in the high country.

Whilst growing beef is our passion, we must grow the grass first! Annually, we aim to improve around 600 acres (240ha) of land, planting a multispecies crop of oats, perennial ryegrass, turnips, clover, chicory, prairie grass, and cocksfoot. We’ve been using this approach since the early 1980’s, continually working to improve the resilience and productivity of our land. Autumn and Winter see the oats, rye and turnips dominate, providing a high-quality feed base for the sale bulls.

FIVE YEAR OLD PASTURE, CLOVER & COCKSFOOT

As the season warms, the sward transitions to being dominated by clover, chicory, prairie grass and cocksfoot. After the bulls have departed, steers and surplus females then utilize the remaining feed. Naturalized species eventually dominate; we aim to get 6-8 years of productive pasture growth before this happens.

A significant portion of our country is too steep to access with vehicles or side-by-sides, forcing us to adapt the way we manage the land, soil and cattle. Horses and dogs are essential for all our stock work, while most of our pasture improvement is done by air.

ONE YEAR OLD PASTURE, DOMINATED BY CHICORY & CLOVER

Due to our steep landscape, it is impossible to get a tractor over much of the country, so aerial application of herbicide and seed allows us to make progress with pasture improvement. That said, paddock preparation is a vital part of the process. In additional to aerial application, we spend many hours climbing (or scrambling!) around the steep sides of hills, pulling a spray reel, as blackberries, blady grass, and para tussock are an issue for us, and hand spraying is the best way to combat them. Since we broadcast all the seed, we use a set of “harrows” after seeding to scarify the soil on the parts of the country we can get a tractor on.

TURNIP

Whilst our stud herd gets the publicity, our commercial herd forms the backbone of our operation. We calve over 500 commercial cows across two seasons, spring and autumn, focusing on producing steers for the feeder steer market, which are turned off at 420-500kgs (920-1100lbs) at around 14 months of age. Surplus commercial females are finished on pasture and sold as finished animals into a grass-fed, ‘never ever’ program.

The half-moon in nearside ear is our property earmark. Two nicks taken from the top of their off ear corresponds to Ascot Evident H146, the sire.

Within our commercial herd, every female is single sire mated, allowing us to sire identify every calf. At calf branding, each calf receives an earmark that corresponds to their sire, and through the National Livestock Identification System (NLIS), we can identify each individual animals along the entire production chain, thus, identifying their sire. By running two distinct joining seasons, we can use the same sires across both the stud and commercial herds, ensuring they are evaluated in realistic commercial settings. Our system allows us to monitor how a sires progeny performs in the feedlot through to hanging on the rail, as well as how their daughters perform and last within a commercial environment.

If a sire cannot produce profitable feeder steers or functional daughters that thrive in our commercial herd, how can we expect such a sire to breed bulls that will add value to our clients’ herds?

Sired by Knowla Jimmy J04

Sired by Dunoon Kind K1354

In terms of management, functionality and robustness are non-negotiable traits in our cattle. Operating in steep and often challenging terrain, our cattle must be able to graze and forage efficiently, maintaining body condition and productivity. To manage them effectively, we rely on horses and dogs for all our stock work. We have all grown up riding and developed a trust for our horses and their capability in steep country! This traditional, yet effective approach ensures that stock are moved in a calm and low stress manner. As a result, we have a positive interaction with our stock, meaning they are easily managed and handled in future settings.

We also place great emphasis on setting our commercial cattle up for long-term success. Calves are yard weaned at around six months of age, typically weighing between 250 to 320 kilograms (550–700 lbs). We wean in multiple mobs, keeping numbers under 100 per group to reduce stress and improve individual attention and handling. During weaning, all calves are feed and

bunk trained using a pasture beef cube manufactured from almond hulls. This ration supports rumen development and trains them to transition to bunk feeding, while critically maintaining access to grass-fed markets. By avoiding grain-based feeds, we retain eligibility for grass fed and finished beef programs, while still setting the steers up for success across a wide range of feedlot pathways.

TED WITH HIS HORSE AND DOG
WEANERS IN THE YARD, GETTING FED A PASTURE BASED CUBE

In both our stud and commercial herds, we use scientific tools and programs to the best of our ability to progress our herd. We have had a long and large involvement with the Angus Sire Benchmarking Program (ASBP), the world’s largest Angus progeny test program. Sires such as Bowmont King K306, Wattletop 458N E11, Lawsons Rocky R4010, Farrer Maxwell M99 and Knowla Revolution R190 have been selected for the program. They are also walking sires at Knowla in both the stud and commercial herd. Carcase performance and marketability have been a long-term focus at Knowla, dating back to the times of the Devon cattle we used to run. The ASBP is a tool that we have used to gain insight into the performance of a sire’s progeny on the hook, to ensure that we make decisions that benefit our commercial herd (and by extension) our client’s operations. Ten years ago, our steers reached 450kg at 20 months; now, thanks to genetic and feedbase improvements, they hit the same weight at 14 months.

More recently, we have employed the genomics tool, SteerSELECT in our commercial steers. We were proud to be the first commercial users of this tool worldwide. This tool gives insight into the predicted genetic merit of steers, giving predictions of nine feedlot, carcase and health resilience traits. Ultimately, all these tools provide us valuable insight into our stock’s likely performance, enabling us to make educated assumptions of the performance of sires in a commercial setting.

KNOWLA LIVESTOCK BULL SALE

We began selling our first Angus bulls in the late 1990s, and through to the mid 2000s we sold at the New England Show and Sale, Tamworth. We had good success here, including the best exhibit in 2001. During the same period, we also sold unled bulls at the Gloucester multivendor sale. We progressed to an on property bull sale in 2009. At this inaugural sale, we sold 43 bulls to top at $12,000 to average $4,883. Nowadays, some 16 years on from this sale, we offer 85 bulls, 6 PTIC stud heifers and 100 commercial females annually. For our clients, we understand that buying stock, bulls or heifers, is a well-considered process and will have an everlasting impact on their herd.

Whilst we are selling livestock, we’re ultimately offering genetics, and we take pride in providing a transparent, well-described package for our clients.

TED TAKING A HIP HEIGHT MEASUREMENT

To offer these well described animals, a great deal of time and care goes into collecting both phenotypic and genotypic data. Each animal at Knowla is genomically profiled, enabling us to parent verify, test for genetic conditions, and most importantly, increase the accuracy of our estimated breeding values (EBVs). We recognise that one of the Angus breed’s greatest strengths is its comprehensive genomic reference population, and maintaining a herd that is relevant to this population further enhances the accuracy of said predictions. By contributing sires to the Angus Sire Benchmarking Program, we ensure our genetics are connected to other industry sires. Progeny are compared and comprehensively performance tested, including hard to measure traits and emerging traits, such as individual methane output.

In addition, by recording a large volume of phenotypic data on farm, we directly contribute to the reference population, strengthening the linkages and relevance of our herd. Thus, the average animal at Knowla will have a recorded birthweight and date, calving ease score, gestation length, and 200, 400 and 600 day weights. They will also have ultrasound scan data for eye muscle area, intramuscular fat, and rib and rump fat. They will be recorded for docility, as well as being independently structurally assed for scrotal, claw set, foot and leg angle, and overall hind leg structure.

By the time a bull enters the sale ring, there will be on average 15 individual data points recorded on him, plus genomics! Our females will additionally have udder conformation and mature body composition recorded, including weight, hip height and body condition score at weaning.

TED AND OUR FIRST IVF CALF, 2024

We were deeply involved in marketing the Devon breed and continued that commitment when we shifted to Angus. All our kids participated in the Angus Youth Roundup, with Sandy earning Grand Champion Herdsman (2011), and Jack and Georgia receiving numerous junior judge titles and scholarships. Jack and Georgia remain active in Youth Committees, while Ted and James are strong advocates for the breed, with James serving as an active director on the board.

STUD The Herd

RECORDING TRAITS

We embrace reproductive technologies to reduce our generational interval and increase the genetic presence of our best performing females. Our first embryo transfer program occurred in 1992.

Since then, we have had ~350 embryo calves born with the Knowla prefix. Additionally, last year marked the first year of IVF calves being born within our program. An Autumn and Spring AI program is run, with ~100 and ~130 females in each program respectively, utilising genetics predominantly from Australia, New Zealand and America.

Validate V35 is the quiet achiever of the group. Out of a young, distinctly Australian-bred cow, he combines exceptional muscle shape, in a mobile, structurally sound package. With a well-balanced data set and strong maternal backing from the Sally cow line, it’s no surprise he earned his place in the EXPO team. His dam, Sally S26 is a clean fronted refined female that brings extra frame and body length to the table. We purposely mated all our Karoo Realist N278 Daughters to So Right, and Validate V35 show us exactly why! Sally S26’s first calf as a heifer was retained in the stud herd. Granddam, Sally K117 stayed in the herd for 11 years, has sold sons to $20,000, and has had many daughters retained in the herd.

As a son of So Right S48, he embodies all the traits we’ve come to expect from So Right - muscle shape, docility, and type, all wrapped up in an attractive profile. Validate V35 embodies growth, maternal strength, docility, carcass, muscle shape, and overall structural integrity.

KNOWLA VERIFIED V66

Verified V66 is an exciting young sire prospect who ticks all the boxes of what we strive for. He was the heaviest weaned bull calf of the Autumn 2023 drop, consistently performing at the top end of his contemporary group. Backed by the influential Designer cow family, Verified’s maternal pedigree is stacked with proven donor females.

Dam, Designer R10, is an impressive young donor in the making, elegant, clean-fronted, long bodied, with an excellent udder. She is a direct daughter of Designer L21, the mother of the $190,000 Knowla So Right S48. Every daughter of Designer L21 that is of age has now entered our donor program. Designer R10’s first calf, Knowla Ten-Eighty T11, sold for $26,000 in our 2023 sale.

Verified would be one of the oldest Landfall Signature S1755 sons in the country. Signature S1755 made headlines in 2023 when he sold for $240,000. Verified V66 brings together calving ease, maternal strength, fertility, docility, carcass quality, especially marbling, and overall structural integrity, all in a balanced, complete package. We plan to collect and use this bull for our Autumn 2025 joining.

Validate V67 is a powerful, high growth, high performance son of So Right S48 that has an impactable foot structure. A standout among the Autumn 2023 embryo calves, it was an easy decision to include Validate V67 in the EXPO team. He stems from the Kruger female line, descending from Kruger W44, a line that constantly produced high performing maternal females who lasted the test of time.

Dam, Kruger R138 is quickly emerging as a standout donor. As an upstanding Monty M186 daughter, she boasts a great udder, excellent structure, with an outstanding overall phenotype. Her full brother, Knowla Rockefeller R108, was retained as a stud sire, with his progeny featuring in this year’s sale. Granddam, Kruger K112 also proved herself as a donor, with a son selling for $24,000 in 2022.

As a son of So Right S48, once again he embodies all the traits we’ve come to expect from So Right. Validate V67 combines growth, maternal strength, fertility, docility, carcass quality, and superb structural integrity into one high-performance, complete package.

Dandaloo N76 is an absolute powerhouse of a female, admired for her muscle shape, body capacity and superior foot quality. She earned her spot in the donor pen with ease and has proven to be highly versatile, consistently delivering standout progeny no matter the mating. This year, she has some exceptional sons in the sale. Her full brother, Knowla National N72 was shown at the 2019 Sydney Royal Angus feature, where he placed first in class and was retained as a herd sire. N76 has the runs on the board, with multiple sons making the front draft of sale bulls over the years - most notably, Knowla Ringer R258, who made the front pen in 2022, selling for $32,000.

Landfall Signature S1755 made headlines in 2023 when he sold for $240,000 to the Harbison family of Dunoon Angus. Signature created quite a stir for his extreme marbling while maintaining body depth and capacity, in a docile, calving-ease profile. He has seen considerable use within the breed. We are thrilled to present some of his first sons to sell in this year’s offering.

This mating of Dandaloo N76 and Signature S1755 brings together fertility, docility, carcass quality, and structural integrity, wrapped up in a powerful, genetically elite package. Designer Q198 is a female we admire for her sheer power, volume, structural soundness, and overall balance, all backed by a proven carcass data set. A natural calf by Bowmont King K306, Knowla Top Dog T258, was a highlight of the 2024 sale, fetching $20,000. Her great granddam, Designer A55 was prolific donor in the late 2000’s, being a direct daughter of the iconic Designer V96.

Knowla So Right S48 needs little introduction - holding the stud record for the highest priced bull, selling for $190,000 in our 2022 sale. So Right has been widely used across Australia and New Zealand with great success, making him a high use sire over the past few years. We are eagerly awaiting his first daughters to calve this August and anticipate these females to be new found strength. Designer Q90 has the potential to become one of our most influential donors of all time. Donor dam, Designer D19, is a full sister to the granddam of the $190,000 Knowla So Right S48 and a direct daughter of the iconic Designer V96. A flush by Dunoon Prime Minister P758 out of Designer Q90 produced six sons, all of which made the sale. This

impressive group included the top-priced sale bull, Knowla Ultimate U50, selling for $44,000 to Merridale, Crawford, and Granite Ridge Angus, and another standout that fetched $36,000 to Coolie Angus. Remarkably, the six full flush brothers averaged $27,666. This year, Designer Q90 will present a standout son by Baldridge Versatile, who will make the front draft with ease.

We used Baldridge Versatile to add calving ease, weight, docility, and marbling, and he has certainly delivered. They are long bodied, with extra softness and shape. We are excited to showcase our first draft of Versatile sons in this year’s sale, they’ll be easy to find!

This mating of Designer Q90 and Baldridge Versatile features calving ease, growth, maternal power, docility, and carcase quality, in a very phenotypically stylish package.
