KNOKKE-HEIST young at heart Knokke-Heist has many different faces that cannot always be described in a single sentence. Our community’s territory is bordered by a rich polder landscape on one side and an uninterrupted 10 km long fine sandy coastal beach on the other side.

To the north our community shares a boundary with Zeelandic Flanders, in the Netherlands, although the inhabitants of Het Zwin nature reserve tend to ignore this.

Leaving Knokke-Heist you will be in the Netherlands in record time. Cadzand is the most southerly seaside resort in the Netherlands and an ideal location from which to explore the coast of Zeelandic Flanders.

Just across the Dutch border you will come across the fortress town of Sluis. On bikes you will be there in no time at all ready to cycle along the unique city walls.

SUNNY beach bars From the Easter holiday to the beginning of October you will be able to enjoy the facilities of the many beach bars in KnokkeHeist. These hotspots provide sun soaked terraces all day long.

An ideal location to acquire a bit of a tan and a dose of vitamins.

Our beach bar operators start at the crack of dawn to prepare the sun loungers that you can hire to spend the day sunbathing.

SINCFALA Museum of the Zwin region

Even though Knokke-Heist has a youthful approach, it still covets its past. The Sincfala museum of the Zwin region is located in a restored neo gothic school building.

This historic museum charts the geological, economic, political and cultural past of the Zwin region, in which topics such as the lives of fishermen, land reclamation, the port of Sluis anno 1400, regional wars and the emergence of tourism in the region are highlighted.

FOR FREEDOM Museum The collection of the recent For Freedom Museum is located in the restored school building at Ramskapelle, a suburb of KnokkeHeist. The museum is testimony to the history in the aftermath of the Second World War in this region. In the For Freedom Museum the visitor is part of the dĂŠcor, which is brought to life in huge, lifelike dioramas in which people, vehicles and other equipment tell the true story of the war. Most pieces exhibited in the museum are part of private collections.

ZWIN Nature Park The Zwin Nature Park is the green buffer between Knokke-Heist and our neighbours to the north in Zeelandic Flanders. The sea inlet used to be a source of economic prosperity in the distant past, but nature put a stop to that. However, it also gave us a huge tidal mudflat and salt marsh area, which is partly flooded by the sea each day. This interaction has created an area exceptionally rich in nutrients used by tens of thousands of birds as a breeding ground or resting place during migration. Join an experienced nature guide or venture into the Zwin plain on your own, but remember to wear wellingtons.

Join migrating birds in the Zwin nature reserve at the all weather interactive exhibition in the visitor centre and follow the cabin trail through the nature park. Be guided by an experienced nature guide or set off on your own – don’t forget your boots – into the magnificent Zwin flatland.

HEIST in green HEIST BAY 'Baai van Heist' is an area of significant ecological importance covering approximately 50 hectares. The nutrient rich mudflats are highly attractive to various wading birds and waterfowl.

The area is freely accessible via the designated pathways from the beginning of August to the beginning of April. The lower beach is closed during the breeding season to protect the birds’ nests.

The bridge connects Baai van Heist with three lesser known smaller reserves and the hinterland of Bruges.

GREEN BELT HEIST WEST Three adjacent areas jointly covering more than 100 hectares. The Sashul, Vuurtorenweiden and Kleiputten areas in Heist all have specific individual characteristics. They can easily be combined into a walk during which you will discover that, even in the shadow of the growing international port of Zeebrugge, there are opportunities to enjoy nature and observe the development of a rare natural environment!

STROLLING THROUGH the woods The Koningsbos (King's Wood) is an ideal exploration site for children, where trees still rule the roost and winding walkways take you to the most beautiful sites.

Tiny visitors are catered for in the Directeur-Generaal Willems Park, which offers hours of fun in the recently completed playground.

Park 58 provides the opportunity for a walk along designated paths whilst enjoying the unspoilt dunes.

EXPLORE THE REGION on bicycle All green zones are easily accessible by bicycle. The 9 km long seafront promenade is the natural ‘umbilical cord’ between the Zwin area and Baai van Heist. The Lichtenlijn then creates a bridge with smaller nature reserves in the district of Heist and the cycle network seamlessly integrates with the nature areas in the hinterland of Bruges. Our close neighbours to the north are also easily visited by bicycle.

Bees are essential if we want to maintain biodiversity and the diversity in our food chain.

BEEODIVERSITY Knokke-Heist, in conjunction with ‘BeeOdiversity’ (Bee-O-Diversity), has developed a project focused on attracting a large audience.

Two cycling routes and a walk provide the opportunity to learn more about bees, biodiversity, honey flowers, pollinators, butterflies, etc. The routes will take you past a bee and biodiversity centre in the gardens of the Scharpoord Cultural Centre and more than 10 smaller gardens.

TAKING THE DOG Going out and about with your faithful four-footed companion?

Dogs are allowed in most nature areas (except in the Zwin Nature Park and Baai van Heist) providing they are kept on a lead and you stick to the designated paths. In winter they are allowed to run across the beach, but from 15 March to 15 October they are only welcome between 9 pm to 9 am. SPORTS & recreation Knokke-Heist offers a range of sports facilities that are hard to find elsewhere. There are five water sports clubs along 10 kilometres of sandy beach. A veritable sea of water sports: sailing, catamaran, kite surfing, wave and wind surfing, canoeing or sand yachting.

OH NO, WATER! Not a water baby... no problem. Kilometres of well designed cycling and walking routes are waiting for you (see pages 54 - 56). Knokke-Heist provides outstanding facilities for tennis, horse riding or hockey. Golfers are also spoilt in the Zwin region golfing triangle. Three golf clubs offer exceptional terrain within a 30 km radius.

Looking for a challenge? In that case a (5 km – 10 km) beach run is the right event. Or would you prefer to tackle a sporting challenge such as the Zwin triathlon?
