hat a weekend we had at the opening round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship at Oulton Park just two weeks’ ago.

The O’ Show made it three form three and it just goes to show the pre-season testing he did with BikeSocial’s Michael Mann paid off (check out our YouTube channel!)

The racing, the atmosphere – the fans! There really was something special about seeing the banking lined with dedicated fans, fans that have been so hungry to get back trackside.

Of course, we feel your frustrations with the capped capacity here at Knockhill.

It’s always going to be a blow to the fans, especially at this amazing circuit where the support is so strong. Fortunately for those who weren’t lucky to get a ticket the excellent coverage of BSB on Quest (free-to-air) and BSB Radio will help fans feel like they’re in the thick of the action here.

Despite the restrictions, we are pleased that our customers can still get closer to the action with incredible access and experiences at Round 2. At Oulton Park, we entertained 60 customers as well as their guests over the weekend and we’ve really missed dishing out those money-can’t-buy experiences: from exclusive grid walks to pillion laps with Pirelli National Superstock podium finisher Billy McConnell.

WELCOME BENNETTS BRITISH SUPERBIKE CHAMPIONSHIP 2021

A

warm welcome to the return of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship to every rider, team member, official, marshal, medic and of course our limited number of spectators this weekend. We all missed you in 2020 and we are delighted to see you all back!

Across the board, all the championships have the quality, strength and depth not seen in years despite the challenges we have all faced over the last 18 months with the pandemic. That is a testament to Stuart Higgs and his team to ensure that we can all enjoy the very best domestic bike racing in the world. It's a revised format this weekend with two days of action and most importantly, three Bennetts BSB races! The Bennetts BSB qualifying format is a feature in itself. Who will end up on those crucial front row grid positions? Only time will tell. Such is the competitiveness of the series, we are fully expecting the entire gird to be covered by a second, so expect anyone in the top 10, or even top 15, to feature on the podium at the end of the three gruelling 30 lap races.

In the Superbike class, we have the reigning champion Josh Brookes returning with the coveted No. 1 plate. He’ll no doubt have at hatful of challengers to his crown this season. Local interest is of course focussing on the two Scots, Taz Mackenzie on the Yamaha and debutant, 19-year-old Rory Skinner on his Kawasaki. Taz's teammate Jason O'Halloran scored a treble at the first round at Oulton Park, so the Yamaha is the bike to beat, and Taz, with his local knowledge could be a good bet for the top step of the podium this weekend. Rory has made the huge step up to the Superbike class and did a top job first time out. His pace was in the top ten and got three excellent points scoring finishes, so let’s all cheer on Rory too as he tackles the big Superbike around his home circuit.

To the fans (both here and watching on TV) we can only share your disappointment with the restricted numbers on site. We were all hoping that we'd be in a far better position regarding the release from lockdown but sadly it was not to be. We must all follow the Scottish Government guidelines and let’s all hope that we can all return to normality in the near future.

Finally, I would like to wish everyone a fast and safe race weekend. We have some of the best riders and teams in the world here this weekend and I’m sure we are all in for a treat! Enjoy!

The 25th Anniversary season of Bennetts BSB kicked off in superb fashion two weeks ago at Oulton Park and arriving at Knockhill, there’s just one question being asked…

UNSTOPPABL A

fter a superb performance at the opening round, who can stop The O’ Show?

Jason O’Halloran was in superb form down at the Cheshire track aboard the McAMS Yamaha as the Aussie romped to a hat-trick of victories to take maximum points from round one.

But last year’s runner-up in the Bennetts British Superbike Championship didn’t have it all his own way by any means and was forced to work hard for each of his wins. Trailing the VisionTrack Ducati of Christian Iddon in all three races, O’Halloran stalked his prey to perfection by hitting the front on the very last lap in both of Sunday’s races after winning from the front in the Saturday encounter.

O’Halloran carries that momentum from Oulton Park into this weekend’s action but will need to be at his very best to fend off any number of rivals again, especially as a podium at Knockhill throughout his career has eluded him.

Not least chomping at the bit will be Iddon

after being denied a victory in round one, after making the running in all three races.

Now based on Tyneside, Iddon can perhaps class Knockhill as his local race and following a successful couple of tests here recently, he will be looking for revenge on Paul Bird’s Ducati.

Also, Ducati mounted is Tommy Bridewell whose Oxford Products Racing Panigale V4 R was on the podium twice at Oulton Park and after scoring a third place on Bennetts BSB’s last visit to Scotland in 2019, he’s bound to be in the mix.

A slimline Peter Hickman, who had shed two stones over winter, was also a visitor to the podium at Oulton Park to give Faye Ho and her FHO BMW team a great start to their tenure

EVENT FORMAT

The event programme will take on a new format for 2021 with the opening day of the event returning to two BSB SUPERPICKS 12 free practice sessions for the Bennetts BSB class. The fastest 12 riders overall will be seeded directly to the Day 2 Qualifying 2 (Q2) session.

The second day of action will begin with a third, shorter Bennetts BSB free practice session in the morning, followed by Qualifying 1 (Q1), where the fastest six riders will progress through to the Q2 session to join the 12 pre-qualifiers from the opening day in the final fight for the pole position for the opening Bennetts BSB race. Later in the afternoon on Day 2, the first Bennetts BSB race will blast off, designated as the BikeSocial race. The third and final day of competition will feature a morning warm up and the second and third Bennetts BSB races of the weekend.

in the series by celebrating a podium on their debut event and the first for the BMW M 1000 RR. Sadly, for his teammate Xavi Fores, he had to sit out Oulton Park after being injured in practice but don’t count out the Spaniard who was on the podium here in 2019.

Defending champion Josh Brookes didn’t have the best of weekends on his VisionTrack Ducati last time out, so a debut Knockhill win for the Aussie will be high on the priority list. Meanwhile, Danny Buchan is the only current Bennetts BSB rider to have won here when he took victory in 2019 so will be hoping for a repeat now he’s joined SYNETIQ BMW. Glenn Irwin (Honda Racing), Lee Jackson (KS-3 Kawasaki) and the Rich Energy OMG BMWs of Bradley Ray and Kyle Ryde are sure to go well, whilst the Buildbase Suzuki pair of Danny Kent and Gino rea will be hoping for better results than Oulton Park delivered.

But two riders who definitely can’t be counted out is the local Scottish contingent of McAMS Yamaha’s Tarran Mackenzie and Rory Skinner aboard the FS-3 Kawasaki. Born a few miles up the road at Stirling, Mackenzie sampled a podium on his last visit to Knockhill and after a great performance where he just missed out on the silverware at Oulton Park, he’s fired up for this one, especially after already seeing what his teammate has achieved.

As for the likeable Skinner from half an hour north in Perth, he impressed on his Bennetts BSB debut so local knowledge and a little bit of trackside support might find the teenager the extra few tenths of a second needed to challenge for a podium.

But this is Bennetts BSB after all, the only thing certain is there’ll be a twist or two once again this weekend, so just expect the unexpected and hold on for one heck of a ride!

As the regular length season returns, the established Showdown format will apply, with some changes for 2021. The Main Season will now consist of eight events and 24 races.

Points will be awarded to the first 15 finishers using the regular format of 25-20-16-13-11-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1.

After the 24th race, the top eight riders in the championship standings will graduate as Title Fighters and be elevated to 1000 points together with any Podium Points accrued in the Main Season. Podium Points will be awarded for each main season race as follows: 1st - 5 points, 2nd - 3 points, 3rd - 1 point. For the remaining three events (nine races), points will be awarded to the first 15 finishers using the regular format of 25-2016-13-11-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1. The BSB Riders’ Cup will continue to be awarded to the first rider outside of the Title Fighters in the final standings.

Despite the best efforts of the Knockhill team to persuade the authorities to increase the 1000 per day capacity allowed, they have been unsuccessful so for those fans without tickets, BSB Radio funded by Kawasaki K Options will be broadcasting live throughout the weekend. Headed by the voice of British motorcycle racing Fred Clarke, pit lane reporter Larry ‘Scoop’ Carter and studio presenter, Knockhill’s very own Duncan Vincent, tune in via the Bennetts BSB website, the TSL live timing page or on 87.7FM locally.

Knockhill was honoured to host its first Royal visitor a few weeks ago where the Duke of Cambridge, Prince William came to Knockhill and was given a masterclass in electric racing with an Extreme E rally car.

Prince William was hosted by Extreme E CEO Alejandro Agag, along with members of two of Extreme E’s British teams; George Imafidon, a Junior Engineer on Lewis Hamilton’s X44 team; and driver Catie Munnings, who races for the Andretti United team, who was on hand to show the Prince how to get the best out of the series’ electric race vehicle.

Stuart Gray of Knockhill said “We were delighted to receive an enquiry about hosting Prince William driving an Extreme E electric rally car. He loved his visit as shown by his reaction on the day and his social media feeds after he departed. He is a known for his interest in motorsport having raced karts as child and is also the proud owner of a Ducati motorcycle. We truly hope that it will not be his only visit to Knockhill.”

Tall Irishman McCormack returned to Bennetts BSB last season for the first time since 2009 where he gave a good account of himself. Sadly, he missed out on the points but now running as a satellite outfit as part of the FHO Racing squad, there is no reason why Brian can’t be challenging not only for the points, but towards the top ten this year.

The Powerslide/Catfoss Racing Suzuki team made their Bennetts BSB debut at the final round of the 2020 season at Brands Hatch with likeable South African Bjorn Estment and return for a full campaign this term.

Estment gave a good account of himself at Oulton Park but spectacularly crashed out of the final race, luckily without injury.

GOING GREEN… When Rory Skinner won the Quattro Group British Supersport Championship last year, he may have dreamed of riding his local Knockhill circuit on a Superbike, so following in the tracks of other Scottish racing legends, that dream has become a reality.

rom just 25 miles up the road at Perth, Rory seems to have been around the race paddock forever, but you have to remember he’s still only 19 years of age.

It’s been an incredible journey despite his young age, where he started racing minimotos at just seven, so by the time he took the Mini GP title at eleven he was already a veteran. On his thirteenth birthday, he won the Superteen title, adding his name to the likes of former champions Casey Stoner, Cal Crutchlow, Sam Lowes, and Chaz Davies.

Rory was then chosen to compete in the prestigious Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup from over 1,000 applicants, before winning the inaugural British Talent Cup in 2018. Unfortunately, a lack of budget meant he didn’t get to progress to the world scene, instead moving into British Supersport. 2020 was very much his year as he dominated the series, taking ten of the available twelve race wins.

With FS-3 Racing Kawasaki being quick to sign up this young talent with a two-year deal, Rory made his Bennetts BSB debut at Oulton Park a fortnight ago, claiming a trio of mature, points scoring rides in a field packed with quality.

So, the question remains, can Rory join the elite club of Scottish stars such as Hislop, Mackenzie and Moodie? He’s definitely on his way but his immediate

thoughts are on this weekend: “I’ve always wondered what riding a Superbike round Knockhill would be like and after a test here, at least I now know. I’m really looking forward to racing this weekend, it’s only half an hour from home and I’ve always liked the circuit, although I’ve actually only ridden it once on a Supersport bike.”

He continues: “I was really happy with Oulton, obviously three sets of points, no crashes and some good lap times was a great start. We struggled towards the end of each race otherwise the actual results would have been even better, I’m sure.

Coming into Knockhill I have such great memories of the place, I’m just gutted more fans can’t attend but hopefully we can fly the flag for those who are watching.”

Rory may have joined the Superbike elite, but he’s not been allowed to go full superstar just yet, as after each event, he’s back on the spanners for dad Mike at Skinner Motorcycles in Perth.

“My dad has sacrificed a lot for me; both in time and money, so it feels only right to keep repaying that by working at the shop. I think it also helps me loads knowing my way around a bike, so I can give good feedback to my crew chief and understand what needs to be done, something my dad has instilled all the way through from minimotos up to the bigger bikes.”

Tight at the top

I

t is often said that it’s tight at the top but in the case of the Quattro Group British Supersport and GP2 Championships, there’s a tie for the lead in both series after the opening round action.

Both Jack Kennedy (HEL Performance Bournemouth Kawasaki) and Bradley Perie (Appleyard Macadam Yamaha) took a win apiece at Oulton Park to top the Supersport class whereas in the GP2 category, Mason Law (Spirit Motocorsa) and Charlie Nesbitt (RS Racing/Kovara Projects Kalex) cannot be separated either as all four riders backed up their wins with a second place each for good measure.

Established master and double champion Kennedy is back in the class this season and looked to carry on where he left off after winning the 2019 crown when he took race one, two weeks ago. But Perie had other ideas in race two and romped to his debut victory for the team that

has won the title for the past four seasons.

The pair will resume battle here this weekend, but they won’t have it all their own way. Welsh-based Aussie Ben Currie claimed a podium for Gearlink Kawasaki at Oulton Park and so did Ashcourt Yamaha’s Lee Johnston who was also on the podium here two years ago.

A trio of other Ulstermen are likely to have a say in the shape of Korie McGreevy (MAR-Train Yamaha), Eunan McGlinchey (Gearlink Kawasaki) and Scott Swann (IFS Team Swann Yamaha) as they make the hop across the Irish Sea with a little longer trip involved for American Brandon Paasch and Dutch rider Jamie van Sikkelerus.

New Yorker Paasch rides for the World Championship-standard Dynavolt Triumph team alongside former World Supersport race winner Kyle Smith on the 765cc machines.

Paasch crashed out of one race at Oulton Park and Smith is still

recovering from a testing injury sustained here at Knockhill but hope to be amongst the front-runners.

Local hopes lay with Aberdeenshire rider Sam Munro (Munro Racing Yamaha) but Irishman Rhys Irwin (Appleyard Macadam Yamaha) and Harry Truelove (Truelove Brothers Racing Yamaha) are capable of good performances also.

Meanwhile in the GP2 class, Jamie Perrin joins teammate and defending champion Law whilst the Chassis Factory/Go Racing Development duo of the Camerons, Horsman and Fraser, as well as teammate Harvey Claridge and Jake Archer (RS Racing Kovara Kalex) are sure-fire challengers. Jack Scott (JJ Racing) scored a double podium at Oulton Park whilst Dan Jones (iForce Lloyd & Jones Spirit) is another to keep an eye on.

Taylor Mackenzie will be looking for another victory on home soil

T

he Pirelli National Superstock Championship is always one of the most competitive championships on the programme and this year’s series is proving to be no exception.

A packed field in 2021 sees some big hitters return to the class on a full-time basis including former champion Taylor Mackenzie who is expected to be one of a number of challengers for defending champion Chrissy Rouse’s number one plate.

Scotsman Mackenzie, who won the crown in 2016, took a sensational victory on the Bathams BMW at Oulton Park to make the best possible start to the season and will be looking to add to that tally at his home track.

Rouse, meanwhile, has switched to GR Motorsport aboard a Kawasaki for his title defence but crashed out on the last lap of round one so the

Geordie school teacher is hoping to make amends here at what is his local track too.

But once again, it won’t only be about these two as a capacity grid just oozes talent, including riders who have vast amounts of Bennetts BSB experience to bring to the party.

Luke Mossey scored a podium at round one for former Bennetts BSB champions and long-term employers Bournemouth Kawasaki whilst Aussie Billy McConnell is another with vast experience and did likewise to give the Rich Energy OMG BMW team some more success.

Former top contender Alex Olsen made a welcome return from serious injury aboard the FHO BMW whilst double Superstock champion Keith Farmer got a late call up to race the Morello/IMR Kawasaki. JDR Suzuki duo Luke Hedger and Ashley

Beech showed well at Oulton and likewise, the Neave twins, Tom who rides the factory-supported Honda Fireblade but crashed out of round one, and Tim who is back again with Buildbase Hawk Suzuki, will be expecting a slice of the action again.

Others to keep an eye on include young Scot Lewis Rollo (RAF Regular & Reserves Kawasaki), Kiwis Shane Richardson (Astro-JJR BMW) and Damon Rees (Ashcourt Racing BMW), Aussie Levi Day (Powerslide AJN Steelstock Suzuki and Irishman Richard Kerr who contests the series for new team AMD Motorsport.

There are at least a dozen other riders capable of challenging for the podium so expect the action to be fast and furious once again.

Casey O’Gorman topped the podium in both races at Oulton Park

T

he Dorna-supported Honda British Talent Cup returns for another season with a combination of experienced riders and rookies ready to fight it out for the crown.

30 riders are set to battle it out once again with a number of rookies joining as some of the former frontrunners move on to pastures new, but some of the returning riders will be key benchmarks for those looking to get up to speed quickly.

Names include the likes of race winners and podium finishers Casey O’Gorman (Microlise Cresswell Racing), Evan Belford (City Lifting/RS Racing) and Bailey Stuart Campbell (151’s Racing) as they start the season as expected contenders, whilst the likes of Sullivan Mounsey (iForce Lloyd & Jones), Jamie Lyons

(C&M Motors/Tooltec Racing) and Johnny Garness (City Lifting by RS Racing) will also be in the mix.

The opening round saw O’Gorman scorch to victory in both races with Belford claiming a pair of podiums along with teammate Carter Brown who was making his UK debut at Oulton Park to great effect.

James Cook (Wilson Racing) was looking strong but crashed out of the opening race at Oulton Park which set him back for the rest of the weekend so he’s planning on bouncing back here at Knockhill.

Diminutive Johnny Garness makes the long trip up from North Devon to try to claim the podium which he just missed out on two weeks ago whilst Harrison Crosby (Banks Racing) is expected to be another leading challenger. Keep an eye out too for the

sister of top Superstock rider Fraser Rogers, Holly Harris (MJL Racing).

New Zealander Cormac Buchanan (Microlise Cresswell Racing) was impressive on his debut last time out and expect the likes of Ollie Walker (Moto Rapido/SP125), Ryan Hitchcock (Wilson Racing) and Jamie Lyons (C&M Motors/Tooltec Racing) to be in the mix.

Scottish hopes ride with Troy Jeffrey (Stiggy Motorsport) from Kelso and Fife rider JJ Cunningham (JCR Supersport) whereas the international flavour is enhanced by Dutchman Kiyano Veijer (Microlise Cresswell Racing) and his teammate, the first rider from Uzbekistan to race in the UK, Tony Eagle.
