Get t ing Back t o Me: f r om gir l t o boy t o woman in j ust f if t y y ear s The realtime account of the coming out of a respected adventure survival filmmaker, taken from her journal entries as she leaves behind fear and ?white male privilege? to embrace truth, grace and womanhood. Her gut-wrenching journey of love, acceptance and honesty becomes the ultimate survival show. Scottie didn?t make it easy on herself. Like many late-stage trans women, Scottie had made one helluva guy; succeeding as a husband of 26 years, the only son, the big brother to three sisters and the legendary adventurer uncle to their children. Everything in her life screamed Alpha Male, Ultimate Man, Best Boy, the dude, and the man. No one could guess that Scottie, a top survival showrunner for Discovery Channel and the History Channel, known for leading 端ber-male productions in the world?s most dangerous locations, was losing a lifelong battle for her soul. It takes true love from her wife of 26 years,

for Scottie to shake off fifty years of expectations from her family, society and herself. But first, she must face her own denial to dismantle the walls of a self imposed prison. Scottie?s articulate and insightful

perspective shines new light on the transgender experience, but it's her deeply personal confession told with unflinching clarity, inspiring courage, and engaging humor, that makes her story a must read for any human, of any persuasion. Hers is a love story that will inspire and affirm everyone.

About t he Aut hor Scottie Madden has created and written 5 st ar s Children's television (Pug & Zero's Field buckl eup! AN INTERVIEW wit h aut hor , scot t iej eanet t e madden

Where are you from? I?m a native southern California girl. I was born in San Diego and raised in Crestline in the San Bernardino Mountains. What did you do before you decided to write your book? I have been in television. I left high school ? studied film & TV at San Diego State, and had my first show two weeks after college. My plan to to take over the world and direct film was working! After that show ended, I

I lea r ned that wor ds, cha r a cter a nd plot have a lega cy, a s well a s a poetr y for m J.R.R. Tolkien went freelance as a camera operator and lighting director (I had to prove myself all over again). I was hired as the DP (director of photography) for ?Surfer Magazine,? a series that ran for five years on ESPN. We were a small crew, so I was also the AD (assistant director) and

became the editor & graphic designer. After Surfer, I had world travel production experience and my career went into international waters? But, I was pitching shows every chance I could in Hollywood, and finally one of them stuck ? a children?s show. I directed and co-wrote for our two seasons ? finally a writer-director credit! But once again, adventure television lured me back, and I was hired a producer for NBC?s ?The Contender.? From there, I rose up with more responsibility and bigger credits and last year, I was the Executive Producer, ?Showrunner? for three series on Discovery & Nat Geo networks. I never stopped writing, mostly screenplays, including my own feature film which I also directed called, ?the kiss.?

teachers loved it! They loved the stories and didn?t mind the extra reading. Since then, I?ve averaged about 2 screenplays a year. But this is my first book. I have been writing several in my head since I first read Lord of the Rings (I also shot those movies in my head up until Mr. Jackson?s triumph). I always thought my first book would be fiction. I love, love, love, telling stories. But this one came out (pun intended) when I was telling my story to some dear friends at a party held in my honor, and my friend David said, ?Are you writing ANY of this down?? I started the next day, last May, and was finished with the first draft in July. Thanks David!

When did you start writing?

What was your favorite part about writing Getting Back to Me?

I started writing screenplays in high school. Instead of the assigned 5-page term paper, I would hand in a script instead ? 120 pages! Actually, my

I think? well, probably one of the most palpable ways to understand how truly loved and loving one can be, is to count your blessings. As I relived the

journey, I could see even the subtlest ways that I have such unbelievable people in my life. And, seeing a ?written record? of how amazing people can be with the simplest gestures of kindness was life affirming. Your least favorite? Yeah, I guess I should?ve seen that coming? least favorite? well, reliving the bad times. As high as the highs were, the lows were the times of my life that I thought I had successfully put in my rear-view mirror. But alas? in the reliving of my life, the old stuff resurfaced to hurt me all over again. The good news is that I?m much stronger this time around, and the bad times truly were behind me. Who is your greatest supporter? By far, my beloved wife, Marcy. She is capital ?L? love, incarnate. After 28 years together, 26 of them married, I can say she is the greatest woman that has ever lived. In all senses and definitions of the word. Who is your favorite author? I always try to have a pithy answer for this one. Let?s try it this way this time: I learned that words, character and plot have a legacy, as well as a poetry form J.R.R. Tolkien. I learned that intimacy and immediacy of character is not an accident of the reader, but are the intention, art and skill of the writer, from J.K. Rowling. And I learned that even the simplest moments become epic turning points with the proper emotional resonance from the legendary Ray Bradbury. And I learned that literary ?swaggah? is a

powerful tool from Hunter Thompson. Favorite book? I have to be honest here. I read about 10 books a year, from biographies to fiction. There?s a ton of great material and most of it sticks with me long after I put the book down. And if that?s the criteria? then I will stand with my fellow geeks and declare, LOTR? ?one ring to rule them all and in the darkness bind them.? Is there a message that you want to deliver with your book? We are all humans. What gives us ?stewardship? of the earth is our ability to love even the things we don?t understand. When we love first and ask questions later, we all not only benefit; we are better. What is next for Scottie Jeanette Madden? The proper question is what things are next for Scottie Madden. In this town and line of work, you have to keep several things going at once or you will lose your mind. I am developing two television drama series, one based on my book, the other based on my vampyre film. I am living part 2 of GBTM, and already have a third of the material as journal entries. This process of writing and promoting a book has also lit the fuse on a cook book that I?ve been toying with since I started writing my recipes down ten years ago. I currently have 75 unique dishes; my goal is 100.

Review "Ever had a crush on a famous star in your younger days? You know the crush, you imagine meeting, they fall head over heels for you, etc., etc. Not even going to ask if you wrote your first name with their last name... Charlotte is all grown up, all business with a side of fangirl and, to be honest, if she didn't have bad luck, she may not have any luck at all when it comes to the famous Des Bannerman, movie star, hot guy, teen crush. One fiasco after another happens until Charlotte has a restraining order against her, from good ole Des. Did she deserve it? Was it fate laughing in her face, frustrating the heck out of her, or is there more than meets the eye, a secret, perhaps, that went wrong, very wrong and hit every tabloid in the universe, totally humiliating Charlotte. As if fate hasn't messed with Charlotte enough, Des is running in the same social circles and to say he can be completely frustrating at times, would be an understatement and Charlotte is hard-pressed to honor the restraining order, okay, she sometimes can't avoid violating it. But life isn't all bad for her, love has found her in the form of an amazing man, best friend and confidant who is willing to stand behind her every scheme to confront Des, in spirit if not physically. When the truth comes out, I had to say, I did NOT see that coming! Charlotte's Restraint by Celia Kennedy is one of those books that you have to read to truly appreciate the humor, the friendships, those over-the-top frustrating moments and the priceless characters that grace these pages..." From t he Aut hor My husband and I watch Clint Eastwood on Inside the Actor's Studio. Inspired by this multi-faceted man, we both thought how amazing it would be to meet him. Which begged the question, how does one go about meeting a celebrity in a non-stalkerish way? I began to wonder how celebrities make new friends, allow people into their lives.

J.M. WITT

I'm a stay-at-home mom with four young children and one extremely supportive husband. We've been married for over ten years and reside in Metro Detroit, Michigan. I've dreamed of writing romance novels since I was little. After having baby # 4, who may or may not have been fathered by Christian Grey, I decided it was time to pursue my dreams. When I'm not running to various appointments, enjoying time with my friends and my family, dating my husband, or avoiding cleaning my house, I'm writing! I love music and believe that books and music can't exist without the other. My goal is for you to read more than a good book, but for you to have an experience!

I'm cursed. There's no cure for what ails me. I'm part man, part draugar; a Viking warrior shifter who protects the dead. I'm a selfish bastard, numb to the world around me, surviving only to avenge my wife and mother's murder. One emotion ? anger? keeps me alive. At least, it did until I met TJ Knight and my icy heart began to beat once more. I was all wrong for her yet I craved her in ways I never imagined. So making a deal with her to save that cute ass from a death mark probably wasn't the smartest thing I'd ever done. If I could manage to keep my hands off her, I might just stay in one piece. The other thing? It turns out we have a mutual enemy. If we can work together, we might be able to find and destroy him. Trouble is, now it seems I have to kill TJ to give her a chance at living. Killing was my favourite thing but bringing her back to life? Now that might prove a problem...

An Interview with Hugo V. Negron Where are you f rom? I reside within the fastness of Illinois, where there are no such things as seasons - you get eight months of cold and snow followed by four months of blazing humidity. I?m very tempted to just keep our Christmas tree up all year and change its theme to surfboarding Santa?s when warmth briefly rears its head around here? What inspired you t o writ e your f irst book? I wrote a ton of stories as a kid in grade school when I was first exposed to fantasy and mythological works. My seventh grade teacher introduced our class to fantasy gaming as a way of fostering creativity, leadership, and developing team work (how unique was that?!), and along with reading Greek mythology, Tolkien, Robert E. Howard, comic books, and later on H.P. Lovecraft and August Derleth, really started to get my imagination going. Over time, I created various characters and summarized their adventures, thinking one day I would sit down and really flesh them all out. That became a sort of part-time hobby of mine, adding to the stories here, removing other stories there. At one point I grew bored with it all when other hobbies and interests took over, and I actually chucked all of my notes and journals into the garbage, only to think twice about it and retrieve them back. Years later,

when I was married, my wife finally told me to do something with the pile of notes, post-its, and journals I had kept, before it grew into something like the mountain of junk Richard Dreyfuss created in his living room in Close Encounters of the Third Kind, so I figured I may as well put my ideas and snippets into some semblance of order. I began to re-engage with my old interest, rekindling that old fantasy passion, re-introducing myself to what I had created before, expanding and adding to it all, and soon after that, Forging of a Knight was born. Do you writ e f ul l -t ime or part -t ime? How do you bal ance your writ ing l if e wit h your f amil y/ work l if e? Definitely part-time. I work full time as a recruiting manager, and also as a co-owner of a part-time resume development/ counseling business with my wife. Add to that a highly active energizer bunny/ 3 year old son, and that makes writing a cherished ?me? time whenever I can find the energy to either stay up when everyone has gone asleep during the week or when I can sneak into our basement during certain Saturdays or Sundays, alternating with my wife to ensure I don?t incur her wrath. Plus, it?s only fair to give each other a day, since there is only so much Sprout TV an adult can handle.

What book are you reading now? Re-reading Algernon Blackwood?s The Willows. Blackwood was a master of mood and setting. His horror tales rely more on the detailing of the environment, giving it a threatening personality all its own. Forget Blair Witch ? Algernon makes a swampy forest with its swaying willows, screaming winds, and hinted at but never fully seen terrors as fearsome and as terrifying as anything currently written. Are t here any new aut hors t hat have grasped your int erest ? I admit I tend to prefer reading older works in the Gothic tradition like an H.P. Lovecraft, Algernon Blackwood, Arthur Machen, or even Sir Arthur Conan Doyle if I?m not reading straight fantasy. Their attention to atmosphere and detail never fails to amaze me. With regards to modern authors, I have read some of Jim Butcher?s works, and there is a certain fantasy indie author by the name of Brian Beam who has written a couple of books in his Korin?s Journal series that I enjoy. What are your current project s? With Book Four in the Forging of a Knight series in the ?can?, ramping up for Book Five in the series, hopefully coming your way next year in late 2016. If you had t o do it al l over again, woul d you change anyt hing in your l at est book? No matter how many times I read my latest book or even the prior three, I always find myself saying I should have added this, I should have deleted that, why did I remove this idea or sentence or paragraph from the story, and why did I go ahead with that one? You never stop wanting to edit your work, and at least for me, it?s sometimes difficult to actually sit back and enjoy the end result, because I keep going over it with a critical mind set, rather than as a reader, if that makes sense. In the end, I think I?m pretty comfortable with the direction I took, as the areas I decided not to pursue sounded pretty repetitious with what I left in, not really adding anything new or of value to what was already presented. For my latest re-read, I?ll stick with that? ) Can you share a l it t l e of your current work wit h us? Since this is Book Four in the series, I need to give a little backstory here.

Forging of a Knight is an ongoing epic fantasy series, following the growth and maturation of its main character, a knight known as Qualtan, as he goes through various stages I think many of us can relate to through our own daily lives, while also dealing with a possible curse that may take everything away that he has worked for in the end. In earlier books, he was dreaming of becoming a knight like his father had been, going on various adventures to prove himself worthy of the title, and once achieved, he began to fret if he was even good enough to have it. Once he got over that fear, he grew into the role, becoming more prominent, more confident, and starts to address doubts in certain things he starts to see and doesn?t like within his knighthood?s Order. Like anyone who hits their stride in a chosen career and plateaus, he starts to wonder, is there more he can do beyond the structure of his position? Can he transcend the role of knight which is dedicated to serving a King? That sort of thinking starts to show itself in The Stolen Thief, and builds throughout as our knight becomes more adversarial with his King, showing some of his growing frustration and impatience (and possible cockiness?) with how the King runs their knightly Order, and how he feels it should be done. In addition, another theme working throughout the series has been one of acceptance. Qualtan?s close friend, Glaive, is a half-orcne thief ? his orcne side being of a ?bestial, evil race? as seen by others. As such, there is some prejudice against him, and Qualtan works with Glaive to overcome it. Many of the orcne tribes made war for Those That Stand in Shadow, a group of demonic entities that serve as the main villains for the most part in the books. In The Stolen Thief, Qualtan ends up searching for Glaive who had disappeared, and having to team up with a band of orcnes to escape from these bizarre technologically advanced elves and dwarves (the Dokahlfar and the Vartahlfar), learning for all that he had been taught about orcnes, for all the battles he has had against them, they are really not that much different from his own kind. With that understanding comes a new level of respect, acceptance, and possibly even friendship, something unheard of in his world, from both sides. Whether or not those feelings hold true are another matter?

How do you overcome writ er?s bl ock? Take a deep breath, and STEP AWAY. I?ll just leave the story at whatever point I?ve gotten stuck at, or burnt out with, and focus on other hobbies, like hiking, biking, or reading other books. Eventually after a few days, or perhaps a week, my interest returns, and then I can go back to the story with a fresh feeling and a more engaged outlook. What was t he most f un part of writ ing your book? Writing the orcnes ? at first I really didn?t know how their personalities would develop, but I knew from the start I just didn?t want them to all sound the same ? growling, evil, loyal to Those That Stand in Shadow, etc. I visualized them as sorta similar to the creatures from the movie, The Island of Dr. Moreau (not the one with a chalky-white, freaky-looking Marlon Brando ? think the 1977 version with Michael York), physically different in appearance but sharing a common bestiality. I actually wanted them to be somewhat funny and a little goofy to lighten the mood a bit, so I started thinking about the Three Stooges as I wrote them. Pretty soon they were involved in the same type of slapstick, which actually worked well since they were supposed to be these boorish, slobbish-type creatures. So having them pulling at each other?s noses and ears or poking each other?s eyes while constantly insulting each other seemed to be behaviors that would come naturally. That was really the best part - coming up with the putdowns they used! I had to make a list to make sure I wasn?t repeating their insults too many times. Creating them was a blast. Who is your f avorit e aut hor and what is it t hat real l y st rikes you about t heir work? It?s funny as you would expect since I write fantasy for my favorite author to be a fantasy writer. Actually, it?s a Gothic horror/ weird fiction writer ? H.P. Lovecraft. Not very successful during his lifetime, but after his death appreciation for his work exploded to where now Lovecraft is considered one of the most influential fiction writers of the 20 th century, ranked up there with Poe. His mastery was mood and setting ? the details he put into his work made everything seem so real. If you read some of his tales, like The Dunwich Horror, The Shadow Over Innsmouth, The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, The Call of Cthulhu, The Whisperer in Darkness, The Shadow Out of Time, and At The Mountains of Madness, you will be swept away into his macabre vision of an uncaring, cold universe ruled by godlike aliens who care little for those that worship them, usually bringing death or insanity to believers and non-believers alike. The scientific data, the archeological history, the detail of architecture, brings Lovecraft?s stories to a vivid life few authors can match. When there?s a dark and gloomy night, you have to pick up one of his works and see for yourself what might come slithering around your bedroom once the lights go out? What was t he hardest part of writ ing your book? Once you get into a book four of any series, you start falling into the challenge of making sure new readers can still easily jump on board and not get lost with anything that may have happened before. Each book in the series is a stand-alone story that can be enjoyed by itself, but there are some subplots which build from book to book in the background, and some characters reappear from prior books which readers following the series will recognize, but new readers wont. Keeping that balanced with making the current story accessible to new readers was probably the hardest part. Did you l earn anyt hing f rom writ ing your book and what was it ? What was amazing to me was how some characters originally not in the stories took the series into areas I hadn?t thought of. For example, there is Jesepha the female knight who played a prominent role in Books Two and Three and is briefly mentioned in Book Four. At first I hadn?t thought of adding a female knight, but after reading through my outline for Book Two I realized it would be fun to add a bit more diversity. So a certain male knight who was really nothing more than a background character with little of value became a female knight, and suddenly there was this great interaction with the mentor of that knight, and more involvement in the main storyline. Soon, Jesepha became this amazing supporting character that got to shine on her own. The stories became better because of the change, and I learned even when you think you have it all down right, if you give some ?throwaway? characters a little breathe of life, they can elevate the storylines by literally taking on a life of their own.

Do you have any advice f or ot her writ ers? Write from a passion to tell a tale that?s important to you, to share something with a reader, whether it?s an idea, a feeling, or a thought. Don?t just write to jump on a current theme or bandwagon, because if it?s not from the heart, if it?s just to try to cash in on some fad or craze (?Hey, the new thing is stories about ninjas fighting vampires fighting werewolves fighting giant bananas from Mars ? I hate all of that and anyone who would like it, but who cares, I?m sure I can make some bucks if I just throw something together!?), your readers will know, and then YOU will know. Do you have anyt hing specif ic t hat you want t o say t o your readers? Of course, I am honored and humbled when readers tell me they gave my books a chance and enjoyed them (heck, even if they purchased one of my books just to balance out their wobbly kitchen table, I?m still honored and humbled, but that?s just me? ). It?s an amazing and special thing that I could make that connection with someone, and that something I created made someone happy or gave a few hours of joyful escape. Beyond that, with my tales, sure they are wrapped up in a fantasy world with all sorts of magical creatures and places, but taking that all away you have an ongoing story about growth, about learning life isn?t the way you thought it was, that sometimes good can be evil and evil can be good, and that differences in others should be celebrated and valued, not feared or scorned. If there is a message in my tales that I hope my readers can pick up on, it?s that? What do you t hink about e-publ ishing versus t echnical publ ishing? If by this you mean ebooks vs. paper, I think like any media, there are pros and cons to each. Personally I prefer reading paper books ? I just like having something that is tactile and tangible in my hands, the smell of the pages, and the feel of the book. I just can?t curl up at night in bed with a hot laptop or reader ? probably because I?m looking into a computer all day long at work and prefer not to when I?m relaxing at home.

Conversely, I have friends/ relatives that prefer ebooks because they can have a library of books saved on their readers without needing a ton of shelf space, it travels with them, and it?s convenient to pull up when in a busy line, train ride, or at lunch. Do I think one will replace the other? I?m not sure ? I think there will always be an interest/ need in both ? although one may dominate based on user preference. For now at least, I can say I sell quite a few paperback books at conventions and the like, just as much as I sell ebooks. Do you have an agent or publ isher? How did you go about f inding one? Self-published. Call me a control freak, but I like having final say in how my stories pan out. In addition, I have a great cover illustrator in Lora Lee, an amazing editor in Erin Potter, and of course, a wonderful service provider like Lulu.com for everything else. If you coul d l ive anywhere, where woul d it be? How about a villa in France? The Gothic architecture, the cathedrals, the art, food, and the people. I love it all dearly! If you coul d have any super power, what woul d it be? That?s a toughie. Being a long time Marvel comics fan, there?s a lot to choose from. Long time Kirby/ Lee fans will recognize the name Galactus, a godlike being that eats planets. Well, if I could have that level of omniscience (not the planet eating thing, though) ? to have the knowledge and ability to stop poverty, war, hate, crime, that would be cool. That or having the power to grow the perfect moustache - that would be nice too?
