n 1867, when František Fridrich stood at Strahov Monastery and pointed his camera at Prague Castle and the Lesser Town, the monastery’s vineyards and gardens spread out over the slopes of Petřín. The bend of the Vltava, receding into the mist, had yet to be spanned by bridges. The houses along Úvoz and the hospital of the Sisters of Mercy of St Borromeo at the foot of Petřín also looked rather different. However, it is St Vitus’s Cathedral that has undergone the most dramatic transformation. At the beginning of the 20th century it was completed in a neo-gothic style with slender spires that added a lofty elegance to its silhouette.

dyž František Fridrich v roce 1867 na Strahově namířil objektiv svého fotoaparátu na Pražský hrad a Malou Stranu, na svazích Petřína se rozkládaly klášterní vinice a užitkové zahrady. Zákrut Vltavy, jež se na snímku ztrácí v mlžném oparu, tehdy ještě nepřetínaly žádné mosty. Jinou podobu měly i domy v ulici Úvoz či nemocnice Milosrdných sester sv. Karla Boromejského na úpatí Petřína. Nejnápadnější proměnou však prošel Chrám sv. Víta. Na počátku 20. století byl v novogotickém stylu dostavěn a díky zbrusu novým štíhlým věžím jeho silueta získala vznosnost a eleganci.

ne of the best known and most enchanting views of Prague Castle is from the Smetana Embankment, a visual delight that lingers in the mind. It is engraved on the hearts of the Czechs, who ďŹ nd it hard to imagine that until recently the view was rather different. As you can see, in the photograph taken around the mid-18th century St Vitus’s Cathedral lacks its slender spires. Work to complete the cathedral, a symbol of Czech statehood, began in 1861 and only ended in 1929. The project provoked much debate, and many experts and admirers of Prague feared that the neo-gothic spires would detract from the character and tone of the city they loved.

eden z nejznámějších a nejkouzelnějších pohledů na Pražský hrad se otevírá ze Smetanova nábřeží.

Patří k vizuálním zážitkům, na které se jen tak nezapomíná. Nám Čechům se vryl hluboko do srdce, takže si jen stěží dovedeme představit, že proslulá scenerie ještě nedávno vypadala jinak. Jak můžete vidět na fotografii pořízené krátce po polovině 18. století, na obzoru chyběly štíhlé věže katedrály sv. Víta. Dostavba chrámu, jenž je považován za symbol českého státu, započala v roce 1861 a protáhla se až do roku 1929. Vzbuzovala značný rozruch a mnozí z odborníků a ctitelů Prahy se obávali, že novogotické věže naruší charakter a kolorit milovaného města.

rague Castle stands on a hill that was once called Swine Mountain. No disrespect was intended: it was derived from its shape, which resembled a dolphin’s back, and until the Middle Ages the dolphin was known as the sea swine. In the latter half of the 9th century Prince Bořivoj built a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary here, and the church became the basis for a fortified settlement that over time became Prague Castle. Many a European city could envy its location, and Prague Castle rises over the city like a fantastical illusion. Since the end of the 19th century, when Karel Maloch photographed the eastern part of the castle, very little has changed, although the horizon has been enlivened by the neo-gothic spires of St Vitus’s Cathedral and greenery now obscures the view of the Dalibor Tower.

ražský hrad je vybudován na pahorku, kterému se kdysi říkalo Svinská hora. Nebyl to název pohoršlivý, odvozoval se z jeho podoby ve tvaru hřbetu delfína, o němž se až do středověku mluvilo jako o mořské svini. Na něm postavil v druhé polovině 9. století kníže Bořivoj kostel zasvěcený Panně Marii, jenž se stal základem hradiště, z něhož postupem času vyrostl areál Pražského hradu.

Leckteré evropské město by mu mohlo efektní polohu závidět. Vznáší se nad Prahou doslova jako fantastický pohádkový přelud. Od poloviny 19. století, kdy Karel Maloch vyfotografoval východní část Hradu, se změnilo jen málo – obzor oživily novogotické věže Chrámu sv. Víta a vzrostlá zeleň zastřela pohled na věž Daliborku.

here are many places in Prague where visitors to the city are enchanted by beautiful views of its churches, palaces and houses, and above them slender spires that are contrasted with large domes and smaller onion domes.

The long list of Prague’s historical monuments and sights is dominated by the wonderful panorama of Prague Castle, which looks romantic from wherever in the city it is viewed. It is delightful on bright sunny days, in the blue light of dusk and on dark nights, when Prague assumes a mysterious and almost magical atmosphere.

As you can see almost nothing has changed since 1928, when the black and white photograph was taken, other than differences in the illumination of the castle.

Praze je mnoho míst, ze kterých se před okouzleným návštěvníkem otevřou malebné výhledy na seskupení chrámů, paláců a domů, nad nimiž ční štíhlé věže, působivě kontrastující s rozložitými kopulemi a cibulovitými věžičkami. Dlouhému výčtu pražských památek a pamětihodností dominuje nádherné panoráma Hradčan, jež každého chytí za srdce, ať ho pozoruje z kterékoli části města. Je úchvatné za slunného jiskřivého dne, v modravém podvečerním přísvitu i za temné noci, kdy Prahu okoření tajuplná, téměř magická atmosféra. A jak můžete vidět, od roku 1928, kdy byla pořízena černobílá fotografie, se kromě odlišně nasvíceného Pražského hradu do dnešních dob téměř nic nezměnilo.

rantišek Fridrich’s photograph, taken around 1870, shows the Third Courtyard at Prague Castle. By then the façades of the castle buildings already had a uniform neoclassical look, but St Vitus’s Cathedral had yet to be completed. The courtyard underwent a radical transformation in the 1920s under the guidance of Josip Plečnik.

The famous Slovenian architect levelled the surface of the courtyard and had it paved with granite flagstones, and he built steps in front of the southern entrance to the cathedral and placed a 1373 bronze statue of St George on a new diorite plinth surrounded by a copper ring.

otografie Františka Fridricha, vytvořená kolem roku 1870, ukazuje III. nádvoří Pražského hradu. Fasády hradních budov už tehdy měly jednotnou klasicistní podobu, katedrála sv. Víta však ještě nebyla dostavěna.

Zásadní proměnou nádvoří prošlo ve dvacátých letech minulého století pod vedením Josipa Plečnika. Významný architekt slovinského původu nechal plochu nádvoří vyrovnat a vydláždit žulovými deskami. Před jižním portálem katedrály vybudoval schody a opodál, na zbrusu nový dioritový podstavec obehnaný měděným kruhem, umístil bronzovou sochu sv. Jiří z roku 1373.

Golden Lane glows with its celebrated charm in both the black and white photograph from 1920 and

the present-day photograph. The picturesque little houses built into the walls of Prague Castle still give the impression of belonging in Lilliput, although in reality they were once the homes of the castle archers and their families and later provided shelter for Prague’s poor. According to legend it was here that in the times of Rudolph II (1576–1612) alchemists attempted to make the elixir of life, the philosopher’s stone and gold.

It is also said that in the House at the Last Lantern, which can only be seen on certain nights, lies the foundation stone of invisible Prague, and there is a gateway there between the real world and the hidden world created by a mysterious order known as the Asiatic Brethren…

roslulé kouzlo Zlaté uličky vyzařuje jak z černobílého snímku z roku 1920, tak ze současné fotografie. Pitoreskní domečky vestavěné do hradeb Pražského hradu stále navozují iluzi, že jste se ocitli v říši Liliputů, a nikoli v místě, kde sídlili hradní střelci s rodinami a později tu našla útulek pražská chudina. Podle pověstí se zde za časů císaře Rudolfa II. (1576–1612) alchymisté pokoušeli vyrobit elixír života, kámen mudrců a zlato. Také se vypráví, že ve zdejším domě U Poslední lucerny, který lze spatřit jen za určitých nocí, je ukrytý základní kámen tzv. neviditelné Prahy a právě tam se nachází brána mezi skutečným a skrytým světem, vytvořeným tajným řádem asijských bratří…
