In this issue...

At last it looks as though the Guild is returning to some sort of normality, with Groups now able to hold face-toface meetings, albeit with social distancing and other rules that have become part of our daily lives. As good as Zoom meetings have been for many of us, there’s nothing quite like getting together with friends over a coffee and a cake, and admiring other’s work up close. Long may it last!

During lockdowns over the last 18 months, many of us have been trying to work our way through our stashes and as a result so many charities have benefited from this – hats for the small local baby unit and teddy bears for the ambulance service, blankets for use in emergencies in NSW, clothes for women and children in refuges across the country, and clothing for children in Syrian refugee camps are some of the charities you’ve supported. There is an ever-increasing demand for our time and skills and many members have produced a phenomenal output to meet this demand. We reduce our stash, we may use this as an opportunity to try a new technique or pattern, and we’re producing something that is appreciated, either because it is a much-needed item or just because someone went to the time and trouble to show that they care.

I recently received a letter from a woman in Sydney which showed how much this meant to her: “I would like to extend my gratitude to the generosity of the members of the Knitters’ Guild of NSW. Recently, my 22 month old son needed to be taken to hospital in an ambulance and was gifted a teddy bear knitted by one of your kind members. We are so grateful he is home and getting better. He has been watching TV and chatting fondly to his Teddy which greatly aided his transition from the ambulance to the ward. Again, I can’t say thank you enough as this kindness made a difficult situation a bit easier for this toddler!”

We usually don’t know what happens to our items after they’ve been donated but this letter shows that your contribution, however small, DOES make a difference. Thank you all so much for what you do to help make the world a better place.

Crafting for Charity Many Guild members like to share the joy they get from being creative by donating knitted and crocheted items to a range of charities. If you're looking for a new cause to support or wondering where you can donate that box of beanies sitting in your spare bedroom, this list of charities that various Guild Groups and members support may give you some inspiration.

AUSSIES KNITTING FOR WARAFFECTED KIDS (AKWAK) www.facebook.com/ groups/294998591896873 (On Facebook) They are a group committed to helping children affected by conflict by giving them handmade clothes, toys, blankets and enrichment items.

They accept hats, socks, neck-warmers, garments, mitts and blankets from wool or predominantly (7580%) wool/natural fibre mixes. They partner with the Australian Syrian Association Victoria who send a container of aid direct into Syria each year. Refer to the Files Section of their Facebook group for general guidelines, and many patterns.

WRAP WITH LOVE www.wrapwithlove.org In 1992 Wrap with Love began with the idea of helping as many people as possible by providing warm Wraps to ward off hypothermia. In the past 23 years they have sent more than 400,000 Wraps to people in over 75 countries, including Australia. A Wrap can be knitted, crocheted, machine knitted or woven, with wool, acrylic or lined patchwork, and each wrap comprises 28 squares, 25cm x 25cm. Full instructions and a variety of patterns are available on their website.

Making beanies?

So many charities need beanies.

Contact the homeless services in your area. If you would like to make chemotherapy hats, enquire at your local hospital or cancer treatment facility.

Making blankets?

Contact your local animal shelter – they often need blankets, to go with the animal to its ‘forever home’.

Refuges for women and the homeless appreciate blankets to brighten up their lounge areas.

And don’t forget that the Knitters’ Guild keeps a store of blankets for distribution within the state in times of emergency. Contact Merrin for further details – merrinmez@gmail.com Making scarves?

These are required by services provided for homeless people, as well as those in refuges.

Making Teddies and other stuffed toys?

Many ambulance and police services keep a few of these in their vehicles to help when having to deal with distressed children. Contact your local ambulance or police station.

Contact the dementia unit at your local hospital or nursing home.

Retail profile Batik Oetoro Can you please tell us a bit about your dye business?

Batik Oetoro is an Australian, family-operated business originally established in 1972 by Bambang Oetoro, a renowned Indonesian batik artist living and teaching in Australia. He originally sold the dye and waxes for batik. He returned to Indonesia, passing the business on to his friend Michel Kostovic, who expanded the range greatly, and operated it until his retirement in March 2007. There are many products now. We sell dyes suitable for cotton, silk, wool, and synthetics; fabric paints for hand painting, marbling, and screen printing; and dye resists; and block printing; all the related chemicals and tools; and a small selection of fabrics and yarns ready to be dyed.

Have you had any strange requests?

Yes. The most memorable was dyes suitable to colour worms for fish bait - it had to make them look fresh and pink but not harm the fish in any way… and a dye suitable for ram breeding markers.

What do you think the benefits are of being a retail member of the Guild?

Retail membership and attending FibreFest gives me contact with and exposure to a different group of textile and fibre lovers.

What are the fun parts of your job?

I have 24/7 access to a 150 square metre factory space FULL of textile dyes and fabric paints and white fabric and bare yarn and ‘stuff’ that I can play, experiment, and create with.

Tell us a bit about yourself I am a textile artist. I come from a long line of women on both sides of my family who were proficient in the needle arts. I was taught knitting, crochet, and hand embroidery at an early age, and then went off on a tangent - dyeing offcuts of worn out cotton sheets with mulberries! A Diploma of Visual Arts (majoring in textiles) and Graduate Diploma of Education (Art) followed, and then ten years in the fashion industry as a textile designer working closely with the screenprinters. I picked up my Dyeing and Patternmaking Certificates from TAFE along the way. I then married and moved to Newcastle, working as a textile artist - mostly producing and selling hand-painted silks and dyeing and teaching workshops. In March 2007, I bought Batik Oetoro.

What projects are you currently working on?

All the UFOs and WIPs that are taking up space and preventing me from finding what is hidden deeper in the stash. Testing a range of dyes from a new prospective supplier - I have crocheted umpteen small squares of wool yarn and cut even more squares of silk, cotton, nylon, and polyester fabrics so I can have the same amount of fibre in each glass beaker with the same precise amount of dye and water. My textile work can be highly technical and I love that side of it too.

How did you come to open a store?

I liked the business so much, I bought it! I was a customer and then worked as Michel’s assistant in the early 1990s. And when he wanted to retire, I took it on.

Crochet:

Di’s Gingham Square Pattern This idea for a square came from a love of gingham fabrics and my friend Selena doing a C2C blanket in a gingham pattern. Squares can be done in any size and any number of checks; it just needs a bit of maths to work it out. It could be made easier by drawing it out on graph paper or using Knit Companion.

Wind the yarn into a few small balls to make it easier. As there are only two colours in each row, you can carry the colour across and you just need to think about the colour changes. Carrying the colours along in crochet is a lot easier than doing it in knitting. Make sure you mark the right side of the square.

To change colours, always start the new colour in the last loop of the previous st.

This sample is done in trebles but would also look very effective done in double crochet.

Gingham Square Sample This square is done in 8-ply with a 3.5mm hook. Decide on colours A, B & C. Each little square is 5 trebles wide x 3 trebles high. The square pictured is 17cm square.

Instructions With colour A, ch 25 plus 3 for turning.

(28 ch) Row 1 Using this colour for the first square, 3 ch for the 1st tr, then 1 tr in

the next 4 st (5 st), change to colour B and do 5 tr into the next 5 sts, change back to colour A, then and do 5 tr, then 5 tr in B, then 5 tr in A, turn.

Row 2 Colour A still, 3 ch for the first tr, then 4 tr, change to colour B, 5 tr, change back to colour A, do 5 tr, change to B, 5 tr, change to A, 5 tr.

Row 3 Repeat Row 2.

Row 4 Change colour sequence, start with colour B, 3 ch for the first tr, then 4 tr, then colour C, 5 tr, then colour B, 5 tr, change to C, 5 tr, change to B, 5 tr.

Repeat each colour sequence so you have 3 rows of trebles in each colour sequence. Change colour on the last loop of the previous colour.

A Basic Sweater Recipe From Sally Ogilvie I knit a lot of sweaters for Aussies Knitting for War-Affected Kids (AKWAK) providing warm clothing for children in refugee camps in Syria. I searched for the most basic sweater pattern which I could personalise by using the many part-balls of yarn I have in my stash and decided the best option was to create my own.

This sweater is knit in the round to the armholes when it’s then knitted back and forth to the neckline. The back neckline isn’t shaped and the front has a round neck. It has dropped shoulders (so no shaping for the armholes) and the sleeves are knitted by picking up the armhole stitches and knitting down to the cuff. The only sewing required is in the sleeve seams but you could of course avoid that too by knitting the sleeves in the round.

Add stripes, stranded colourwork, mosaic stitches …. Or of course just knit it with one colour.

Materials Required: 8-ply yarn (Remember to use yarn with a wool content of at least 75% if knitting for AKWAK) 4mm circular needle, 60cm 3.5mm circular needle, 60cm Waste yarn or stitch holders Tapestry needle Gauge: 22sts and 30 rows to 10cms in stocking stitch on 4mm needles Approx.

Work in K1, P1 ribbing (OR K2, P2 ribbing) for 4 (4.5) cms.

Change to 4mm circular needle and stocking stitch.

Increase 2 (2) stitches in first round - Stitch count: 134 (146) Work even until body measures 16 (19) cms – 48 (56) rounds, excluding the hem.

Transfer 67 (73) stitches to waste yarn or holder.

Work on the other 67 (73) stitches for back for 14 (15.5) cms - 42 (46) rows.

Place 18 (21) stitches at each end on holder or waste yarn (for shoulders) and centre 31 (31) stitches on holder for back of neck.

FRONT: Transfer the 67 (73) body front stitches from holder to needle, with right side facing. Join yarn. Work even until armhole measures 8 (9.3) cms – 24(28) rows.

Work 26 (29) stitches. Slip next 15 stitches to a holder for front neck. Slip next 26 (29) stitches onto a holder.

Working on the first 26 (29) stitches only, decrease 1 stitch on neck edge on every row 8 times, until 18 (21) stitches remain. Work even until armhole measures 14 (15.5) cms – 42 (46) rows. Place 18 (21) shoulder stitches on stitch holder.

Remove the other 26 (29) stitches from holder and place on needles. Decrease 1 stitch on neck edge on every row 8 times, until 18 (21) stitches remain. Work even until armhole measures 14 (15.5) cms - 42 (46) rows. Join these 18 (21) stitches to back shoulder 18 (21) stitches, using 3-needle cast-off technique. Join the other shoulder stitches (18/21 at front and 18/21 at back) in the same way.

SLEEVES: Using 4mm needles, pick up and work 64 (68) stitches around armholes.

Size 1: Decrease 1 st at each end of every 4th row 13 times to 38 sts. Work even until sleeve measures 19cms. Decrease 4 sts evenly across the last row (34 sts remaining) as follows: K4, k2tog (k7, k2tog) 3 times? until last 5 sts, k5.

Size 2: Decrease 1 st at each end of every 4th row 8 times, then every 6th row 5 times to 42 sts. Work even until sleeve measures 24 cms. Decrease 4 sts evenly across the last row (38 sts remaining) as follows: K4, k2tog (k8, k2tog) until last 6 sts, k6.

Change to 3.5mm needles. Work 10 rows in K1, P1 ribbing. Cast off remaining stitches.

ALTERNATIVELY - knit the sleeves in the round, using a marker to mark the beginning of each round and working the decreases on each side of the marker in the relevant rounds.

NECKBAND: Using 3.5mm needles, with right side of work facing, pick up and work 31 sts from back neck holder, 17 (19) sts from left front neck edge, 15 sts from front neck holder and 17 (19) sts from right front neck edge (80/84 sts). Work 4 cms in K1, P1 ribbing. Cast off loosely. Fold neckband to the inside and sew in place.

ALTERNATIVELY – for a single neckband, work 2 cms in K1, P1 ribbing and cast off.

Using mattress stitch, sew sleeve seams, if not knitted in round.

Sew in all ends and block.

GROUP REPORTS BLACKTOWN

We were so lucky that we were able to go to both the Guild gathering and World Wide Knit in Public Day before lockdown. Over the past few months, we have been holding weekly Zoom sessions on Saturday mornings.

It's been great for keeping us all connected as some of our members miss going to the library where the Wrap with Love group is hosted. It's amazing how many projects we are actually finishing because we're home so much! We are grateful for the online workshops organised by the Guild, and for the Biggest Show and Tell where we got to see what everyone was making.

We helped create a beautiful knit bomb installation for Blacktown City Council to raise awareness about domestic violence. We helped cover a 2-metre high teapot with flowers the size of a dinner plate! Today some of us went to our regular meeting place just for a change but we sat outside under the newly installed shelters with tables and chairs. We are really looking forward to the November meeting and meeting in person for the first time in so long!

BLUE MOUNTAINS

Haven’t the last few months felt like Groundhog Day? Like for many other groups, our last three gatherings have been via Zoom. We are so fortunate to have this technology available to us, as it means that members who are isolated still had the opportunity to catch up and interact with other group members each month. Our members have continued sharing some beautiful creations, newly learnt techniques, COVID hair colouring tips and lots of stories.

Unfortunately, it did mean we were unable to meet in our new meeting place, Glenbrook Bowling Club. We are looking forward to getting there

in the not too distant future, double vaxxed, masked up and ready to socialise again!

I would like to thank the Blue Mountains Group for being such a supportive and thoughtful group, keeping the joy alive during these challenging times. In the past three years as Convenor, I have really enjoyed working with this group. My role has never been a chore and I have really valued the opportunity to get to know the group members in a way that I would never have imagined, through laughter, tears and lots of inspiration.

Thank you… I’m looking forward to the next chapter!

Our last meeting in September was spent at Lawrence in the park beside the Clarence River. Although there were only a few of us, we had an enjoyable morning catching up and working on our projects.

We haven't been able to cover many topics on our program so we will hope to do it next year.

We will also go on the outings we had planned. Looking forward to our next meeting.

CROCHET TURRAMURRA

We had 12 members at our June meeting, two days later the Guild Gathering was on, then the following day I was off to the Outback. I crossed the border in early June and headed for South West Queensland. It was great to spend three months in an isolated community helping with a variety of things. From teaching knitting and crochet to scrubbing out the Hot Bore Baths!

Our crochet group is small, very casual and prefers not to have Zoom meetings, so we stay in contact with occasional emails. When we do catch up again, I know everyone will just want to chat and have a big Show and Tell. With any luck we might be back in early November or December.

One of the best projects came from Rita McDermott. She has been doing a few blankets for family using graph patterns. This one is for her son who has two gorgeous dachshund dogs.

Rita said it kept her sane while she

was in hospital and rehab, but will never do black again!

Looking forward to catching up again with everybody.

Despite being an overcast and sometimes raining day, Monday 11 October did not dampen the eagerness of 18 members to meet on Freedom Day to enjoy each other’s company and a good Show and Tell. We did have one Zoom meeting during lockdown, but we hope this freedom continues and we all stay in good health, whilst maintaining good Covid Practices.

EPPING CROCHET

Epping Crochet Group has been unable to meet due to the Lockdown.

Some members of the group attended the Epping Knitting Group this month and they now have patterns to complete the over-arm project bags started so long ago. The group will begin meetings again in November and December. We look forward to sharing what we have been doing during lockdown with a great Show and Tell as well as our AGM on 8 November.

Our last workshop was on Dorset Buttons. This is a really good way to personalise your knitted garments and give them an individual touch.

You can really let yourself go and use brave colour combinations without committing to a large project.

Thankfully, our Facebook group kept us inspired and entertained.

Our talented members produced a fantastic looking brioche top-down jumper in beautiful colours, jackets, beanies and intricately patterned socks and a lovely gansey jumper.

There was a photo of a started project, a short sleeved cardigan knitted in merino, silk and yak which featured a mix of patterns.

We have missed the companionship and support our group provides and we hope that as things return to normal, there will be no further restrictions and we can continue to learn and share.

Like many other Guild groups, we have been unable to meet since June. We held a Zoom meeting in September and what we thought would be a short meeting, with only five participants, lasted for 2.5 hours. We will hold another one for our meeting in October and look forward to catching up with more members.

We have been meeting online with reduced numbers and slightly shorter meetings. Our get-togethers have been less formal, involving chat, Show and Tell, and yarns about yarns. (We’re very happy to provide a safe space for online shopping confessions!) Welcoming new members is great at any time, and we are looking forward to meeting in person and letting newbies experience the glorious anarchy of a live meeting, with catwalk!

The group has continued to meet via Zoom for social knitting and usual monthly meetings during the past three months. We have continued the Show and Tell segment. Group members have been prolific in their output and inspiring in the range of projects undertaken, including new techniques and unfinished projects being completed. We have not been able to meet face-to-face but the Zoom meetings have allowed us to continue as a group in preparation for actually meeting up.

Our Secretary Jenny Bevan has produced an amazing monthly newsletter including completed works, and recommendations for books, films and TV shows from group members. The newsletter has been instrumental in maintaining the group's spirit of sharing and supporting each other. There have been many ways to maintain groups throughout a pandemic but there is nothing like face-to-face contact and we are looking forward to that.

Since our last report we have again been thwarted by the pesky COVID-19 virus. Happily, we have a Facebook group that allows us to keep in touch and share with each other the fabulous projects we currently have in progress and the lovely things that we have finished.

Can’t wait to see everyone soon and see some of the blankets and shawls, tops, sock and jumpers in real life.

Well not a lot has been happening at Macarthur in the past 3 months. but we have kept in contact by phone calls and emails on the days we should be meeting.

We are all hoping and keeping our fingers crossed that we can return to the same restaurant as last year for our combined Christmas party and AGM … and then restart 2021 in 2022!

MAITLAND

We have been very quietly working away on our Stephen West

Macarthur-Alex knitting in the vaccination queue ‘Winterlights’ shawls and coping with various lockdowns and interruptions to our regular gatherings.

Maitland has not met as a group for quite a while, but we still remain in contact with each other, sharing our knitting and crochet journeys as well as providing the all-important inspiration for our next challenges. It is anticipated that the Maitland Group will return to face-to-face meetings in November.

MID NORTH COAST

Our Group has met via Zoom for the last three meetings. In these meetings we have shared tips and tricks, favourite podcasts, blogs, vlogs and You Tube Channels and free patterns we have used. Some of our members have appreciated and enjoyed the online workshops the Guild has organised and everyone has been busy on their many different projects including items for various charities.

MUDGEE

Like most, we have not been able to hold face-to-face meetings in the last couple of months. I’d like to tell you about some of the good work members do for various charities. We are only a small group but feel we have contributed to helping those in need.

Sue, Barbara, Robyn and Janet

knitted beanies and scarves for the Merchant Seaman who arrive without enough warm clothing. Sally, Robyn and Bev knitted wool jumpers, caps and mittens for refugees in camps.

Trauma Teddies knitted by Barbara and Mary are distributed to the local Police and Ambulance stations.

Sue and Mary have knitted cotton bandages for people with leprosy.

The bandages are distributed through the local Anglican Church. Janet has knitted teddies for Westmead Children’s Hospital. and small jumpers which were given to a couple of families during the drought and fires.

Barbara holds “Knitting in the Library” once a month where members and non-members knit and crochet squares for “Wrapped with Love” rugs.

In conjunction with the Castlereagh Country Group of CWA, Janet and Barbara have knitted koalas for sample bags celebrating the 100 year anniversary of the NSW CWA. These will be sold at the 2022 Sydney Royal Easter Show. Sue, Barbara, Janet, Robyn and Elizabeth, members of the Mudgee Evening Branch of CWA, knitted poppies to raise money for the local Legacy Branch. Some Group members knitted and crocheted “Rain Drops” that were displayed at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. Elizabeth and Larraine knitted Premmie Babies caps distributed through the local hospital. As I have been Convenor for the last three years, I will be handing over the reins so Merry Christmas and may next year be better for all.

NORTHERN TABLELANDS

Following several Zoom meetings, we have at last enjoyed a couple of meetings face-to-face which has enabled us to catch up with those who could not connect on Zoom. An interesting and sociable afternoon was spent sifting through a considerable number of patterns and books donated to our group. These now form the basis for our own group library.

It is with excitement that we look forward to our first face-to-face get-together in the form of a picnic, along with our WIPs and no doubt lots of chatting, Let’s hope the weather is kind to us as we plan to celebrate our 6th Birthday.

Our Zoom meetings have been fun, with a screen full of faces. Pittwater has opened their arms to all including some members of other groups.

As for everyone lockdown has been difficult, however we are lucky to have a large LGA and there have been a few “click, collect and drop off” which have kept many busy. It is surprising how much yarn can be carried on a motorbike!

As one of the newest members, I am in total awe of the amazing work that KG Pittwater members produce, not only for themselves but for the charities that we support. I’m sure there will be kilos of knitted/crochet garments ready for Maureen to distribute to the charities.

I would like to thank all the members for welcoming me to the group, for the friendly helpfulness when the “newbie” asks questions and for teaching me to improve my knitting/craft.

Queanbeyan) Down in Queanbeyan and surrounds we’ve been in lockdown but still keeping our Guild connections going.

NEWCASTLE

Like everyone else, the Newcastle group has been locked down for most of the last three months. Our members have kept in touch through our Facebook group, a colourful and interesting newsletter (thank you Kathy Heinrich), and letters from the convenor.

We were able to meet once picnics became possible in late September.

It was joyous to gather in the park in groups of five to share our current work and catch up on news. Mask wearing didn’t stop the chatter. We plan to meet again in October when more of our restrictions are eased.

Stay safe and well everyone and look forward to FibreFest in March.

We have been meeting via Zoom (thanks to Sally O and Sue F for facilitating this) and we had 21 members at our October meeting, which was lovely. The meetings are heavy on the Show and Tell with people sharing their crafting activities.

Quite a few of our members have been knitting for war-affected children in Syria, making gorgeous jumpers and mittens to send across the globe.

We have also been enjoying the workshops arranged by the Guild, thank-you very much to those who have made them happen. The Tunisian crochet workshop with Abbey was very good - And the tour of Bendigo Woollen Mills was just fantastic, with our guide providing great insights into the manufacturing process. It was definitely a treat to see how the shade cards are created and to get a glimpse at the fabled Back Room. With any luck we will be able to visit the shop in person sometime soon but the factory tour was a genuinely special experience.

THE ENTRANCE

After another few months of lockdown, it is exciting to hear that we can gather again in November. Our group has been lying low but from all accounts, knitting has been a happy focus for us all. We have shared a few treasures through emails and phone calls. Our plans for the rest of the year are simple but socially exciting for those who had previously felt trapped and incarcerated.

We are not a group who like social media but we have been able to support each other in other ways during this difficult time. We are still supporting our local We Care Connect group, who are in need of children’s items and other necessities for families in crisis. Our massive effort of garments for Syria was sent off with the hope they reach the children who need them most. Thank you to our members for their support and hard work.

Cheers to all the Guild members; keep on with the great job you are doing.

WEST RYDE

Here we are after a very long lockdown and I hope everyone is safe and well. We managed to have

meetings up till June in our hall. I applied to Ryde Council in September to secure the room again for 2022, and I am waiting confirmation of that.

We have been Zooming a few times which keeps us still together. I would like to thank Sally Ogilvie for enabling us to use the Guild Zoom. It is always lovely to see what everyone has been knitting or crocheting. We have organised a meeting in the park weather-permitting. It will be wonderful to chat face-to-face again and to meet our new members. We hope this will be the start of our regular meetings. This lockdown has seemed to make the end of year come along even more quickly. We the members at West Ryde wish everyone the very best for 2022 and have a wonderful Christmas.

Since our World Wide Knit In Public Day, we have two new members and look forward to meeting them, once we are able to go back to face-to-face meetings.

We have kept in touch via our monthly Zoom meetings, enjoyed the Guild's Show and Tell and attended a few of the organised workshops. MEET THE MEMBERS This issue we’re featuring some members who contribute to their group’s charity efforts. Please note that some groups’ members preferred not to be included, or not at this time.

Boni Maywald and Thea Blanch, Kiama Group Boni and Thea (along with Boni’s husband, Peter) are joint coordinators for Kiama region Wrap with Love and coordinate the contributions from Kiama Knitters’ Guild members.

How does the group decide who to support?

Kiama Knitters’ Guild members have made a wide range of shared group decisions about what charities the group supports over the twenty years this group has been active.

A range of different charities has been supported by Kiama Knitters’ Guild over this long period - some focused on donating knit or crochet items, other charities focused on providing social support. Boni and Thea provide materials and updates on contributions made to Wrap with Love at monthly face-to-face meetings.

What kind of items do you prefer to knit or crochet for charitable causes?

Kiama Knitters’ contributions specifically for Wrap with Love have focused on providing squares and finished blankets. Kiama area knitters and stitchers donate around 400 finished blankets a year.

Member Thea Blanch What’s your knitting superpower?

Our “superpower” function has been to help local knitters and stitchers maintain a sense of calm capability in the use and sharing of their crafting skills, even through recent Covid challenges. We have helped establish Covid-safe ways of keeping in touch with local Kiama supporters and contributors of Wrap with Love, and by doing Covid-safe front doorstep pick-ups and drop-offs for those who need home-based support. We have also had a long-term partnership with Kiama Library, which acts as a safe, community-based drop-off and collection point for Wrap with Love contributions. The library provides a hub for those needing wool or to attend Knit-Ins where they can exchange ideas and suggestions for making squares and finishing blankets.

What do you know now that you wish you'd known when you started out?

The more we have engaged with Wrap with Love organisers, the more we realise what a wonderful open, inclusive and supportive community organisation it is.

Thea - likes to play mah-jong and she enjoys the challenge of jigsaw puzzles.

She is an executive member of Kiama St Vincent de Paul, and manages their accounts and bookkeeping.

Renee Glass, Ku-ring-gai Group Renee has been a Guild member for several years and knits for a variety of charities.

How does the group decide who to support?

We don’t have a particular charity that the group collectively decides to support. We will discuss the options and it’s entirely up to our members to choose which ones are appropriate for them. I have discussed AKWAK with my group and the others I support which are from those listed on knit4charities.org A friend and I also started a group called: Around the Community Table.

It’s designed for women to come together in a relaxed setting to do charity work (knitting, crochet or sewing). We’ve mainly knitted blankets and beanies. Most of the knitters have limited skills but are enthusiastic and learning all the time.

What kind of items do you prefer to knit for charitable causes?

I go through stages where I might knit larger items and then smaller ones.

So, I really have no preferences - just where my mood takes me.

When you’re not knitting you are….

I garden, read, walk, play bridge, socialise, - basically I think I’m hyperactive and never bored.

How does the group decide who to support?

With the support of its members, the Pittwater Group tries to support charities that have had some former association with individual members.

Although a few different charities are being looked at by the Group, its major charities are currently: Ronald McDonald House and Life’s Little Treasures.

What kind of items do you prefer to knit or crochet for charitable causes?

Mary - I started out as a knitter; however, these days, due to arthritic hands, I prefer to crochet – but only simple patterns which can be done in front of the TV at night. I guess I’d make 3 or 4 rugs a month.

Jenny - I prefer knitting teddies, large and small. I get pleasure and satisfaction from creating simple little teddies with smiling, happy faces that give so much comfort. I know I’ve made lots of them but I do knit scarves, beanies, mittens etc. My crochet skills are limited so my contributions are a few granny square rugs. I also enjoyed knitting the preemie rugs, jackets and booties for a change.

Do you know how many items the group has made for charity?

Our Group made over 700 last year.

The majority of these went to Ronald Macdonald House, Cancer Council and Syria. Between January and June this year, the Group made 482 items for charity including baby jackets and bootees, beanies, scarves, toys and of course rugs. Since the Sydney lockdown the Group has continued to knit and crochet for charity purposes.

When we eventually meet again, we’ll need a semi-trailer to transport all the items that have been made by the members during this time.

What do you know now that you wish you'd known when you started out?

Mary -I think technology would have been a wonderful bonus when I started knitting and crocheting. I believe every day is a new learning experience for me.

When you’re not knitting or crocheting you are….

Mary - Since retiring from a busy TAFE teaching career I now have plenty of time to go to jazzercise and line dancing – but more importantly just doing fun things with the family and especially the grandchildren.

Jenny - When I’m not knitting or crocheting, I am just doing everyday household jobs and looking after my husband- all the time itching to get back to creating!
