A reflection of the great Northwest, Hawthorne is a yarn inspired by the varied and vibrant place we call home. This sturdy, colorful, superwash sock yarn is made up of a blend of superwash wool for comfort and warmth and nylon for strength. Together they make a beautiful canvas for colors that range from bright and playful to moody and sophisticated. A classic high twist gives this the bounce and resilience, great for the projects Hawthorne does best: unique socks, stunning shawls, and soft yet durable accessories. It even makes beautiful garments, like sweaters and shells, where its hand-crafted colors can get the attention they deserve.

Hawthorne comes in four dye styles, each as delightful as the next, and they mix and match beautifully for projects that use multiple colors.

Your Guide to Knit Picks Sock Yarn

SUREFOOT

Thanks to kid mohair, Surefoot has a slight sheen and a very faint halo, and in addition to its unique look, mohair adds extra durability to the classic sock yarn blend. Create socks and accessories in natural cream, or have fun with hand-dyeing your own custom colorways.

Fiber Content: 40% Superwash Wool, 40% Super Kid Mohair, 20% Polyamide (Nylon)

Number of Plies: 4

Density: 4.37 yds per gram

Dye Styles: Bare

Care: Machine Wash Gentle / Tumble Dry Low

Yarn used: Bare 27617

STATIC

Static is released in limited-edition, TV-inspired colorways, making it a great yarn for collectors. Its patterned stripes make for an engaging knitting experience, even with simplest patterns, because it’s fascinating to watch each color sequence evolve. At some gauges the staticky stripes can look almost like Fair Isle, while other gauges create a white-noise pattern.

Fiber Content: 75% Superwash Wool, 25% Nylon

Number of Plies: 4

Density: 4.37 yds per gram

Dye Styles: Self-patterning stripes

Care: Machine Wash Cold / Lay Flat to Dry

Yarn used: The Max 61394

CAPRETTA

Capretta’s touch of cashmere paired with fine Merino creates one of our softest sock yarns. It’s perfect for luxurious socks to be worn gently or fingering weight accessories that would benefit from the strength of Nylon, such as gloves and fingerless mitts.

Fiber Content: 80% Fine Superwash Merino Wool, 10% Cashmere, 10% Nylon

Number of Plies: 4

Density: 4.6 yds per gram

Dye Styles: Bare, heather, solid

STROLL

Stroll comes in a wide variety of dye styles and put-ups, making it one of our most versatile sock yarns. Stroll Mini Packs make multicolor projects affordable and low-waste, and solids, tweeds, and heathers come in 50g balls, making it easy to get just the right amount of yarn. Stroll Hand Painted and Stroll Tonals come in 100g hanks, so you’ll have enough yarn for a pair of socks without worrying about the natural variation that can occur with hand-dyed yarns. If there’s a fingering weight project, odds are good that there’s a perfect Stroll to match!

SOCK YARNS FOR EVERY PROJECT

SWISH FINGERING

With no extra strong fibers like silk or nylon to reinforce it, Swish Fingering makes incredibly soft but delicate socks, and nylon reinforcement thread can be held double with it on the toes and heels if desired to create sturdier socks. It’s all wool and can be dyed any shade a crafter could imagine without any concern about a secondary fiber taking color differently.

Fiber Content: 100% Fine Superwash Merino Wool

Number of Plies: 4

Density: 4.37 yds per gram

Dye Styles: Bare

Care: Machine Wash Gentle / Tumble Dry Low

Yarn used: Bare 27612

IMAGINATION

With 25% Alpaca, Imagination is one of our warmest sock yarns. It’s wonderfully cozy and can be dyed any color you can imagine. Because Imagination does not feature superwash Merino or superwash Alpaca, pieces made in it must be hand washed. For that reason, it’s best used for special socks—rather than everyday socks—as well as accessories like gloves and shawls.

Fiber Content: 50% Merino Wool, 25% Superfine Alpaca, 25% Nylon

Number of Plies: 2

Density: 4.38 yds per gram

Dye Styles: Bare

Care: Hand Wash / Lay Flat to Dry

Yarn used: Bare 26589

MUSE FINGERING

Muse Fingering’s classic sock yarn base is ideal for holding hand-dyed colors like speckles and tonals. Originally coming in a range of hand-dyed colorways produced in Japan, it has proven itself to be reliable yarn for soft socks and colorful accessories.

Fiber Content: 75% Superwash Merino Wool, 25% Nylon

Number of Plies: 4

Density: 4.23 yds per gram

Dye Styles: Bare, speckle, hand painted, tonal

Care: Machine Wash Gentle Cold / Tumble Dry Low

Yarn used: Poetic Hand Paint 28158

GLOSS FINGERING

With silk for strength instead of Nylon, Gloss Fingering is a luxurious but strong sock yarn. It has a hint of sheen that highlights textured stitches. Unlike most sock yarns, Gloss Fingering does not feature superwash wool, so pieces knit in it must be hand washed. For that reason, it’s best used for special socks—rather than everyday socks—as well as accessories like gloves and shawls.

Fiber Content: 70% Merino Wool, 30% Silk

Number of Plies: 4

Density: 4.4 yds per gram

Dye Styles: Bare, solid

Care: Hand Wash / Dry Flat

Yarn used: Jacaranda 61078

HAWTHORNE FINGERING

Hawthorne’s 2-ply, high-twist construction creates a very round yarn when compared to our other sock yarns. It’s uniquely bouncy and creates gorgeous textures and cables. The fine superwash Highland wool holds saturated colors well, making it a great base for handdyed techniques. It’s a sturdy sock yarn, but Hawthorne also makes lovely accessories.

Fiber Content: 80% Fine Superwash Highland Wool, 20% Polyamide (Nylon)

Number of Plies: 2

Density: 3.57 yds per gram

Dye Styles: Bare, kettle dyed, tonal, multi, speckle

Care: Machine Wash Gentle / Tumble Dry Low

Fill the tub with water and wool wash. Place your handmade pieces in the strainer basket in the tub and allow to soak. Pull the strainer up and down to gently swish your items without too much agitation or fear of felting wool. Easily lift the strainer from the bucket, click into place, and separate the soaked items, leaving the dirty water behind. The interlocking connection allows your strainer to connect and elevate above the base of your Strucket tub. Best of all, when the whole job is done, you just need to release the plug built into the base of your Strucket and watch your dirty water drain away. A bulky weight yarn, Billow works up quickly while the luxuriously soft feel makes it the perfect treat for those with sensitive skin. PIMA COTTON VS TANGUIS COTTON

COTTON

Pima cotton's fibers are two inches longer than standard cotton, which makes it a very smooth, breathable, and strong fiber for your knitting projects.

Suggested yarns: Billow, Lindy Chain, Shine, Snuggle Puff, Woolen Cotton, Comfy Tanguis Cotton is also durable and stronger than regular cotton, but it is naturally more absorbent. By blending Tanguis Cotton with linen, the linen fibers add extra strength and softness. Each time your project is washed, it will only get softer, which makes it wonderful for kitchen and bath accessories, as well for garments for kids and adults.

Suggested yarns: CotLin, Bare Cotton Boucle

GENTLE AS COTTON, AS STEADFAST AS LINEN

CotLin

CotLin is a cool and lightweight Tanguis cotton and summer linen blend perfect for washcloths and spa gifts and summer knits for children and adults. Tanguis (tangwiss) cotton has a very soft hand, excellent absorption, and, because it is a naturally white fiber, a high affinity for dyes. The Belgian linen adds the characteristic flecks and additional absorbency with very low elasticity - helping to alleviate stretching in the finished knit. Summer linen has an extended growing period which results in a longer, stronger fiber. When blended with the already strong Tanguis cotton, it makes a durable, wearable, and soft yarn. The knit fabric will get softer with each wash too. DK | 70% Tanguis Cotton, 30% Linen. $5.29/50g skein - 123 yds.

Mercerization is a process applied to spun cotton yarn that increases the absorption of dye and adds shine to the finished fiber. The resulting yarn is bright with a smooth sheen.

Suggested yarns: Curio and Animation

Blending linen with cotton gives our lightweight CotLin and Lindy Chain yarn extra strength and softness. Each time your project is washed, it will only get softer, which makes it wonderful for kitchen and bath accessories, as well as for garments for kids and adults.

Knit Picks' responsible manufacturing promise

HERDSMAN

Our partners in Peru are dedicated to promoting suitable living accommodations for their alpaca herdsman. The alpaca producers spend their lives in some of the country's most remote locations, at extremely high elevations. Our partners have developed comfortable ecological housing, made from locally-obtained materials, equipped with state of the art facilities such as solar power, running water, an environmentally-friendly sewage system, and plant nurseries. These cottages are also built on the herdsman's land, as an investment between partners.

COMMITMENT TO THE ANIMALS

Over the past 20 years, our Peruvian partners have been conducting a comprehensive heritability study on their flocks. Through this study, they have compiled the world's widest and most complete database on alpaca breeding, which improves the overall health of their flocks and ensures proper care based on genetics. Additionally, the innovative shearing technique they perfected has improved the yields of their annual alpaca shearing operation while enhancing the wellbeing of the animal and increasing safety for the shearing team. This method of shearing has now been adopted as the official national standard for Peru, which has positively impacted all animals in the region.

foursquare NEEDLES

GREAT FOR: GREAT FOR:

Foursquare needles take the same laminated birch as the rest of our needles and square it. Smooth, flat sides fit perfectly against your fingers and gently rounded corners offer a comfortable, secure grip.

Note: Foursquare needles can be sized with our standard View Sizer. However, your knitted gauge may vary from the same size round needle.

Available in: laminated birch wood Majestic and Sunstruck colorways, in a full range of interchangeable, fixed circular, and cable needles.

Lovingly referred to as “shorties”, these are exactly like interchangeable needles, but shorter! Featuring the same laminated birch or slick nickel and smooth joins, the tips measure just 2¾".

With their specially made cables, they measure 16" from needle point to needle point. The shorter tips allow for a rounder overall shape to better negotiate the tight circumference of small projects like sleeves, cowls, and hats.

Available in: stainless steel and multiple laminated birch wood colorway sets. Also sold individually in US Sizes 4–10 (3.5–6mm).
