Teacher ready to publish first novel Linda Hearon, Government teacher, recently wrote her first novel and said she hopes to get it published this year.

“Laurel’s Gambit” is a fictional tale about Laurel Ames, a young woman with a medical condition whose only cure will wipe away her memory. Laurel rewrites the journals from her past to recreate a designer life. When she awakens, she becomes a pawn in a deceitful scheme calculated to run the tragedy of memory loss.

“I just love to write and find it personally rewarding to create a world with characters in it and to manufacture problems for which I can give a solution,” Hearon said.

Hearon completed the final draft of the book Nov. 17, 2013 and sent her first query letter January 2, 2014.

She said if she does not find a publisher

by June 1, she will self-publish.

Maine and Warrington woke up early on February 10, the day after Homecoming, to travel to Arkansas and compete in JBU’s annual academic sholarship competition. Piano students rate high at state Senior Paige Posson and sophomores Elise Alexander and Katie Wolgast received “1” ratings at the KSHSAA State Piano Festival Feb. 22 at Wichita State University.

Posson has played piano 12 years and has also participated in five Concerto Auditions, two Senseney-Schneider Piano Auditions, and two Regional Piano competitions.

Alexander has played piano nine years and has participated in WSU competitions, KSHAA piano regionals and state.

Wolgast has played piano since preschool and has participated in music progressions and regiona piano auditions.

“Auf Wiedersehen, goodbye,” says beloved teacher

“Mrs. B. is kind of like the ‘mom’ of the whole school.

She is kind and caring, and I’ve learned so much from her class. It is probably the most beneficial class I’ve had so far.

Her love for the Lord shines through in everything she does, and I’m going to miss her very much next year, but I wish her the very best.”

Teacher Jill Buettgenbach, better known as “Mrs. B.”, has taught about 1500 students in her 15 years at Trinity, but this round of students will be her last, at least for a while.

Buettgenbach and her husband will move to Germany this August to serve as dorm parents at Black Forest Academy, a boarding school for children of missionaries. They will act as temporary parents for about 20 high school girls who can’t stay with their parents because the mission field either doesn’t have an English-speaking school or is too dangerous. The Buettgenbachs will be living in the village of Holzen for three to five years and will only be able to return to the States in the summers.

Buettgenbach, who teaches sophomore girls’ Apologetics and Spiritual Formation, and Personal Finance, said her new job will be a lot like parenting. This would include driving them to school, preparing meals, showing up at their sports events, communicating with their parents, and more.

“Anything that a parent would do for them, we would do for them,” Buettgenbach said.

According to Buettgenbach, the idea originated in 2009, on a mission trip to Cambodia that “planted a seed in my heart that sometime in the future I should go into missionary work.”

On a later mission trip to the Philippines, Buettgenbach toured Faith Academy, an organization similar to the Black Forest Academy where she will work. Th principal impressed upon her how volunteers are able to be a part of missionary work all over the globe by working at an international missionary school.

At a 2010 convention in Dallas, Buettgenbach chose to listen to a lecture on international missionary schools. The entire lecture was about Black Forest Academy.

“It seemed like that was the door God opened for us,” Buettgenbach said about Black Forest.

She said she will miss teaching, but according to students, Buettgenbach has always been more than a teacher and has taught more than just factual knowledge.

Senior Montana Severe said, “She is an amazing, godly influence in my life and an example of who I want to be. She has taught us how to be real, how to have confidence in that, and how to remember who we are in Christ.”

“Mrs. B. has taught me to always be strong in my faith, to surround myself with people who love Jesus, and to be open to new relationships,” sophomore Julia Rogg said. Buettgenbach is a leader in Rogg’s church youth group.

members who have touched her life.

“I work with some of the best people in the world,” she said.

She admits that this adventure will mean moving beyond her comfort zone.

However, Buettgenbach said she looks forward to the opportunity to truly walk by faith. Leaving everything she knows will be a leap of faith that will require leaning on God and trusting Him to be her everything.

Some of Buettgenbach’s most precious memories from Trinity are interacting with students outside the classroom - mentoring them, leading Bible studies, and attending musicals, games, and senior trip - but she also said she will miss interacting in the classroom. She said her work at Trinity has played a role in preparing her for her new mission.

“Teaching all-girls Bible classes gave me the opportunity to learn how to understand and minister to girls, to get to know the girls and meet them where they are,” Buettgenbach said.

While Buettgenbach is revered for her relationships with students outside class, students also appreciate her abilities as a teacher to create a different learning experience by sitting in a circle, celebrating birthdays, praying over girls, and making each student feel loved.

“It’s not a normal class,” Rogg said about girls’ Apologetics and Spiritual Formation. “She is able to reach different learning styles.”

Sophomore Ruth Schroeder, who is a new student this year, appreciates how “she really pushes us to get to know each other. We’re sharing our hearts with each other, and that means a lot to me because I haven’t known everybody since we were five. I really like Apologetics,” Schroeder said.

According to students, Buettgenbach has made such a huge difference in so many students’ lives that it is difficult to pinpoint the one quality they will most miss about her.

Rogg said she will miss “her joyful spirit and how she is always fun and

laughs and smiles.”

Severe said that she admires Buettgenbach’s passion, how she lives life boldly, and how “she is intentional with relationships. She doesn’t let a student go through her class without trying to build a relationship with them. When she says she cares, she means it,” Severe said.

Buettgenbach encourages students to keep in touch with her. She plans to open a blog on her trip to Germany this spring break. She also asks for prayers and financial support, but Trinity students, families and faculty have already been a blessing to her.

“The support I’ve already received from the Trinity family is so overwhelming and helped affirm my calling even more,” Buettgenbach said.

Buettgenbach may be stepping into the unknown, but one thing is certain and unanimous among Buettgenbach’s students: Trinity is going to miss Mrs. B for a long, long time.

A representative from The Chocolate Fountain, who provided the fountain and chocolate, said Trinity Homecoming students consume more chocolate than any event they cater - even more than 1,000-guest receptions!

For the record, we snarfed down 52 pounds of chocolate Feb. 8.

Josh Smith helps Special Olympics athletes succeed

While many high school kids are spending time at the movies or with friends, sophomore Joshua Smith is giving his time to coach Special Olympics athletes.

Smith is a volunteer basketball coach with the Kansas Special Olympics.

He said he enjoys coaching and helping the athletes get better.

“They’re just as much people as any other person,” Smith said.

His team is from the Butler County part of the league. The season started in early January and continues into early spring.

The ages of the players are “all over the place,” he said. His team has nine players including adults more than twice his age.

They practice Monday nights

at Andover High School and play games each Saturday.

Smith’s mother is a special needs teacher for Andover Central Middle School, and a friend of hers told Smith about the coaching opportunity.

This past summer he also coached a Special Olympics softball team.

This is Smith’s first year coaching basketball and said his focus is more on the people than the points.

“It’s more about playing than seeing the score,” Smith said.

The players on the team are there to have fun and play some basketball - Smith said he wants to help them achieve that.

Nostalgia and the

The Video Home System, more commonly known as VHS, enjoyed peak popularity in the 1990s according to the World Almanac.

Current Trinity Students grew up with movies and TV shows on VHS. Today, many students still use and express nostalgia for the technology.

Launched in 1976, the VHS gave birth to the industry of home video.

For the first time, Americans had a reliable, simple system of watching and recording shows and movies at home.

Fast forward to 2014, and it turns out that 54.6% of Americans own a VCR according to the 2013 the World Almanac.

So why is this?

There are actually a number of reasons.

First of all, some people still use Videocassette recorders to record TV shows.

Senior Nathan Laymon uses his VCR frequently, both for recording and playing tapes.

“I have like 90 VHS tapes, and I watch them all the time,” Laymon said.

Laymon said he uses his VCR because it is so easy and simple to just pop in a tape and record.

Jon Grissom, Trinity Bible and Ethics teacher, still uses his VCR on a regular basis. Grissom records his TV shows on VHS and if he wants to transfer anything to a digital format for one of his classes, he is set up to do that.

While some people use VHS tapes for their practicality, others still watch them due to nostalgia.

Junior Lauren Atteberry who has at least 100 tapes, owns Cinderella on

VHS and DVD, but still prefers the tape.

“I like the ‘vintageness’ of VHS and how it isn’t always perfectly consistent,” Atteberry said.

For Atteberry and many other students her age, the solid “chunk” of putting a tape into the VCR brings back memories of growing up.

“When it gets messed up and makes weird sounds… I love that,” Atteberry said.

Atteberry also appreciates the robust qualities of tapes. While she says that DVDs are easier to store and are more convenient, she likes the fact that VHS tapes can’t be scratched and don’t skip like DVDs do.

For Junior Ashley Burger, VHS tapes preserve her family memories.

Burger and many other families have preserved their memories on tape and owning a VCR is essential for these people so that they can enjoy their past. “[Tapes] remind me of being a little kid,” Burger said.

Like many things in this world though, VHS tapes have a limited life, which is what many people will be finding out several years down the road.

Ron Nutt, station manager and chief engineer at KCTU-TV, has seen video recording technology move from 16mm film to tape to DVDs, and he says that any recording tape, including VHS tape, has a life of about 25 years.

“Over a period of time, the acetate base of the tape hardens and breaks,” Nutt said.

That being said, Nutt said that tapes can last much longer if stored under the right conditions.

Teens and chores - what’s normal?

ophomore Sofia Hidalgo sweeps and mops her kitchen, beats the rugs, takes out the trash and vacuums her house regularly. She is paid a weekly allowance for her work.

You will never hear her complain. “[Chores] give me a good work ethic,” Hidalgo said. “They make me more responsible and teach me how to help out around the house.”

Sophomore Elise Alexander said she is sometimes asked to do specific chores, but nothing regularly.

“I normally do them because I want to have a clean room,” she said.

Alexander also receives a weekly allowance, but said it is not connected to chores. It is preparing her to live in the real world, do good work without pay and be responsible for herself, she said.

A chore is defined as a small job or routine task. Sometimes chores are rewarded with money or allowance.

In our parents’ generation, teens were expected to perform assigned chores regularly. Today, some parents wonder if teen chores have been falling, and how this will affect the next generation as they mature into adults, graduate from high school and start their lives in the real world.

Kent Warrington, science teacher and farm owner, said chores

help teens grow in responsibility and confidence because work is a part of life.

Warrington grew up on a farm in a town with a population of 50. He fed the animals, burned the trash, weeded the garden, drove a tractor and more.

Once, when he was in fifth grade, he forgot to feed the rabbits before he went to school.

When he arrived home that afternoon, they were dead.

He said he learned a hard lesson that day: chores have to get done.

Mark Keene, a Wichita parent of two teens and a grade-schooler, said teen chores can benefit society. They teach a good work ethic, and an allowance teaches how to manage money wisely.

Keene said chores prepare teens for life on their own. When they go off to college, will they be prepared to take care of their dorm? When they buy their first house, will they be ready to keep it clean?

Whether they know it or not, Keene said, teens need chores, and someday they will be thankful for the work ethic their parents taught them.

“Working hard is an everyday, all the time thing,” Keene said, “not a sometimes thing.”

Imagine walking into a quaint blue creamery. An array of 33 ice cream flavors greets your eyes and you can’t wait to try them all. There is something chocolate, something vanilla, something fruity and something for everyone.

Caleb Shannon, sophomore English teacher Ashley Shannon’s husband, opened the ice cream shop at 3700 E. Douglas June 1, 2013.

Since then, folks have been enjoying a family-friendly old-fashioned ice cream shop.

According to Ashley Shannon, Caleb got the idea to start the creamery when their nieces and nephews visited from New Mexico.

“Caleb took them to the [College Hill] park to play, and they wanted to get ice cream - but the only ice shoppe they found was Dairy Queen,” Ashley Shannon said.

She went on explaining that there are small creameries all over Minnesota, where they used to live, but there weren’t any near College Hill. When Caleb saw a building available, he decided to buy it and the process began.

Their Creamery is only open on the weekend during the winter months, but they are open during weekdays over the summer. As of now, they are serving unique Blue Bell ice cream flavors, but they plan to start making their own ice cream soon.

Spring sports preview:

Softball

Girls swimming is optimistic about their season this year. They lost 3 state-qualifying seniors last year, but they are reloading in big numbers this year.

“They [the seniors from last year] were really encouraging last year. They understood it took awhile to learn,” sophomore Olivia Kauffman said.

The team will heavily rely on sophomore talent.

Bliss Baird, Olivia Kaufman, Kendall Kilgore and McKenzie Blake, who all were on varsity last year, will be put in leadership positions early in their high school careers.

“We have a lot of beginners who are willing to do their best,” said Kaufman.

With the loss of Chesley Kilgore, Emily Knocke and Morgan Massey, the swim team will not have it easy this year. The future is bright, however, and the team could have more talent come their senior years.

The future is worth waiting for the team. The team respects the legacy the seniors left for them.

“They were always positive and encouraging,” sophomore Abby Davis said.

The future of Trinity girls swimming is bright.

Although they lost a lot of talent, they have strong swimmers stepping in to lead.

after two years of moving around at little league softball fields. Athletic Director Steve Miller believes that a field will help establish softball as a staple sport at Trinity.

“In the past couple years the team hasn’t been able to practice at one place. They have had to play at some fields in Andover and have been kicked off by little league teams.

Being at the same place to practice and get better will help recruiting and establish this program,” said Miller.

The team has a new head softball coach this season. Amy Gunderson, wife of Head Coach of the girls basketball team Brett Gunderson will take over the duties. The Knights have now had three Head Coaches since the beginning of the program in 2011.

This year the team is a big question mark. One thing is for sure, however, the team will be much improved from last year.

Golf The golf team lost four seniors, one of which was their leading scorer. Aaron Ziesch was the lone state qualifier from last year’s team.

“With the loss of Aaron, we’re going to lose someone who put up a consistent low score,” said junior Austin Shanks.

The team will return two varsity guys this season.

Assistant Coach Steve Miller said that he expected a lot of help from junior varsity players from last year.

“Alex (Carro) and Austin (Shanks) played in a lot of summer activities and improved a lot, same with Kellen Marshall. I expect some of our junior varsity players to really step up this year and put up solid numbers for us.

The most important thing for Miller for the team is that they gain experience this season.

“We expect the guys to gain valuable experience.

That is the most important thing to me and Coach Ziesch,” Miller said.

With no seniors this season, the junior class will need to carry the majority of the load this season.

Baseball begins

Trinity softball has had their fair share of struggles in their first two seasons as an official Trinity sport. This year they are more optimistic and confident in their team.

“It’s been hard to start the program because of the lack of support,” said senior shortstop Catherine Hoppock.

This year’s senior class were freshmen when the softball team started in 2011. In 2011, Trinity started as a club team.

The seniors have gone through a lot of tough seasons. For some of the team, the lack of support hurts the team.

“Some people haven’t been the nicest the last couple years when we didn’t have a lot of success. It’s hard pushing through that,” said Hoppock.

For others, the lack of support fuels them to work harder.

“It actually makes me want to work harder,” senior Ali Walton said. “When they keep telling me that I can’t do something, I want to disprove them.”

The softball team will start in their own stadium this year

The baseball team lost their entire outfield from last year, but that should not be a problem with a lot of seniors and sophomores stepping up and playing offseason baseball.

“We didn’t lose pitching but we lost our entire outfield,” said senior Josh Palecki. We’ve gained a new type of leadership this year.”

The saying commonly repeated from players on the team “9 players, 1 team.” The idea behind the saying is that the coaches want players to come together and encourage one another. Palecki is ready to lead the team.

“Since I’m behind the plate I can encourage and lead with the correct mentality,” said Palecki.

The coaches are optimistic about the future of the team. They are ready to build a foundation with the sophomore class.

“I think we will be better,” said Assistant Coach James Jost. “We had a lot of people older in age that weren’t older on the baseball diamond. Last year we had a lot of underclassmen that left unsatisfied with the outcome of last year.

In response, a lot of the underclassmen played summer ball and some played fall ball.”

The time the underclassmen put in will translate to the field this year. Although the sophomore class is the foundation for the team to build on, this senior class is the backbone of the team. Since there are no juniors on the team, the sophomores really are the future. Most of the freshmen and sophomores have played together in the West Urban League since 6th grade.

“The sophomores are the future of the team.

The underclassmen will have to work hard but it won’t be easy,” said Jost.

This year’s senior class experienced a lot of success their sophomore year when the team made it to the first round of State.

“We have a lot of good senior leadership. In order for this team to succeed we will need these seniors to work hard together and to accept their roles,” said Jost.

The baseball team will be a force to be reckoned with the next few years, but results may not come right away.

The tennis team will be a big question mark this season. Although the team does not have much offseason experience, the team returns four varsity players this season.

“We don’t have a lot of experience, but we love playing together,” said junior David Dieckhoff. “The best part of this team is that we love all love each other.”

The problem in the past with the tennis team is that the new players do not have any experience. The four returning varsity players are solid and consistent. This year, the team has a few new players that could really improve the varsity team.

“We have four returning varsity players, so I’m expecting leadership from those players,” said Head Coach Dave Zimmerman. “They know the challenges and I’m expecting them to train hard and compete strongly. This should be an example to the new players of what we are expecting. We have some new players including a couple with competitive experience, so I’m hoping they can fill in the gaps.”

The team struggles for consistency throughout the season. This could be due to not many players do offseason work to get any better.

“We don’t do a lot of work outside of the season. If we arent constantly working on our fundamentals we lose the progress from the last season,” Dieckhoff said.

Zimmerman wants the team to focus on tennis fundamentals.

“We’re going to continue to focus on tennis fundamentals this year.

This includes fitness, technique, tactics, and mental competitiveness. I’m asking team members to set individual goals for improvement and to work to achieve these goals. Underlying all of this, we want to continue to grow the Christian character of the team members,” said Zimmerman.

Having upperclassmen with varsity experience will help the team pursue through the toughest meets. Zimmerman relies on those players.

Pairings for the doubles teams could prove to be an issue for the Knights.

“Several of our upper class guys have played since their freshman year, and others have individual competitive experience, so the team should have the experience to compete well from the early part of the season. The challenge will be to hone the skills and find the right combination of players for doubles. If we can do that, we should have good results this season,” said Zimmerman.

The team will need the talent coming in to fill in the gaps on varsity in order for the team to succeed at tournaments. This is something they can do, but for them, it’s all about staying consistent.

The track team will be successful this year due to the offseason running program Head Coach Randy Mijares started at Trinity.

Mijares originally started the program with his cross country team in the fall. Now that kids are buying into the program the results are showing. The athletes recognize the long distance part of the track team as their strong suit.

“Long distance because a majority of these athletes train all year round and put in the long miles each and every day,” said senior Kayla Dohm. “I admire the heart they have for running.”

The team wants to build their success off of their trust for one another. They believe their success will come from competing for God. “Being humble by realizing the goal is not to compete for themselves but for God, their coach, and their teammates. With the right priorities comes the right results,” said Dohm.

In addition to competing for God, the team wants to be committed to each other.

“We want to be a committed team and compete on a high level,” said freshman Sam Schroeder.

“The team needs to come together and make each other better in order for us to succeed.”

The team has a lot of expectations for themselves due to the offseason program. They expect results now.

Congratulations to the girls baksetball team for winning sub-state against Parsons on March 8. That was the first sub-state win for Trinity girls basketball in school history. Good luck tonight, March 12, in the quarter-finals State game against Frontenac at 6:30 p.m. at Hartman Arena.

David Vigilius qualified for state this season in freestyle. The state meet was hosted in Topeka on February 21.

Volleyball Softball The softball team will be playing at their new softball stadium this year. Athletic Director Steve Miller said that the team should start playing sometime soon after Spring Break. Parents placed sod in the fall and will be putting the finishing touches on the field in the next two to three weeks.

Booster Club The spring sports booster night is 6 to 9 p.m.

Boys Basketball

Congratulations to varsity boys basketball team on their successful season. The boys won the Central Plains League and won their first sub-state basketball game. Trinity fell to Andale 52-38 last Saturday in the sub-state final.

An interview with Tenth Avenue North

A

lthough I’ve been a part of the newspaper staff for four years, I haven’t had an opportunity like this before.

Stacey Stamps, our newspaper instructor, emailed the Winter Jam publicist, asking if a student from our class could interview a band performing at Winter Jam. They normally don’t give interviews to high school students, but luckily I was given the opportunity to interview Jason Jamison, drummer for the band Tenth Avenue North.

We interviewed 20 minutes by telephone during school Friday, Feb. 21.

Looking at the Winter Jam schedule I saw how busy it was, so I first asked him why the band goes on tour.

Jamison said that being away from his family is definitely a challenge and it takes a particular type of spouse to support you while you’re on the road. They choose to tour despite this because it’s a goal of theirs to go out and make disciples.

“It’s part of the discipleship process for us,” he said. “To go out and be with His church and His community.”

Other parts of touring include getting to see how God has used the music they’ve written.

“You make a record and put these song on CDs and send them out, you never really know how God is going to use them. You go out and perform them live - you really see,” Jamison said.

Winter Jam is a different type of touring, however, because

of all the other bands they are traveling with. Jamison said that Winter Jam is like a crazy summer camp. They get to see all of these bands that live and tour around the same areas, but usually miss one another by a day or two.

“It’s awesome to sit back and talk to these artists, hear where they’re at, hear their hearts. We do a weekly church together while we’re on the road. To be a part of that is pretty incredible,” Jamison said.

While touring, I assume the band probably runs into many different people from all different walks of life. Particularly, I was curious to hear about what Jamison sees youths desiring, or if there’s a common theme he’s noticed. He said that for young people today, authenticity seems to be the key.

“I feel like the generation that’s coming up, even the generation after us, they can see right through any type of façade we put up. I feel like what connects so well with the youth and that generation is just being real,” Jamison said.

He also made a comment about the concepts of being real, saying that it’s when we are honest with each other that the gospel becomes good news.

He continued on to say that the concepts of honesty become very freeing when we live a life where it doesn’t matter what we’ve done. “…look how jacked up I am – if you can see. Then you can see how good our God is,” Jamison said.

{Display of His Splendor} Students tithe time & love

Four grade-school girls with warm brown eyes sat on the sidewalk in Wichita’s Otis Park last month.

Two Trinity teenage girls sat with them and asked about their favorite subjects at school. The teens were volunteers with Vision In Motion, an outreach to urban kids.

Art is their favorite subject, they said. One girl described a drawing that her sister had recently drawn of “the man on the wood” being pulled by chains.

The teens asked the elementary girls if they know what that drawing meant.

The girls shook their heads, confused, and said no. They did not know the story. They did not know the significance.

The teens sadly exchanged glances at each other and held back their tears as they told the girls who Christ is and why it’s important.

If children don’t know about Jesus, then as a Christian community we need to be doing everything possible to spread the name of Jesus. Sometimes Trinity students forget that kids in our city have never heard the name of Christ, senior Kaelin Hoch, VIM volunteer, said.

Here are a few ways that students can get involved.

Vision in Motion (VIM) is a sidewalk Sunday School for urban kids modeled off of a similar ministry in New York City. Hoch said about 10 Trinity students help at VIM each month. She said its mission is to reach out to children in underprivileged neighborhoods and build relationships.

“Building relationships is the

biggest,” she said.

Hoch says, “I just didn’t expect it to be [mean] a lot.” After going to VIM, she realized that it would have a bigger impact than she could have imagined.

Hoch said, “It’s amazing to step out and gain perspective on what’s important,” also “I feed a lot off the joy of the kids.” Hoch now knows that going to VIM is energizing and refreshing. To get involved, Hoch says just to catch a ride with another student and come. Also, speaking Spanish is not needed. VIM is in Otis Park at 13th and Market. It is the third Wednesday of every month.

Another serving opportunity is Compassion. The inspiration for Compassion came from the annual Trinity New York City missions trip. Rowe planned the New York trip solely for the students. The New York trip is a missions trip led by Rowe to reach the people of New York through Spanish.

Rowe’s life was flipped upside down through this trip.

Rowe states, “I had no idea what an impact it would have on my life.” As a result, Rowe began Compassion. Compassion is a ministry to love and feed the homeless of Wichita, while building relationships with them at the same time.

The first Compassion was on January 2, 2010. It consisted of below freezing temperatures, Rowe, her husband, and one pot of soup.

She said the mission of Compassion is, “to share the love of Christ with people that are overlooked.”

Mrs. Rowe said, “Compassion was born out of my realization that God had given me a new heart and love for people.”

“I think our calling is to make disciples that make disciples.” - Taylor Hilton Compassion is the 2nd Saturday of the month from 11 am to 1 pm.

Just show up to Compassion at William and Main across from the Main Library.

Another service opportunity is Wyldlife, which is a club to reach middle school students. Lauren Obermeyer, senior, volunteers with the Robinson Wyldelife, but there are Wyldlife clubs around the city.

Obermeyer explained, “The goal is to build relationships with kids.”

Obermeyer said Wyldelife tries to “present Jesus in a way they [the students] haven’t seen before.”

Taylor Hilton, senior, who works with Wyldelife Collegiate, said that she loves working with Wyldelife because of the impactful mentors in her own life and because she wants to have the opportunity to impact other kids’ lives. Hilton said, “I think our calling is to make disciples that make disciples.”

Matt Shepard, Metro Director of Young Life Wichita, said, “Young Life is a great tool. The tools of contact work, club, camp and campaigners are very effective, however the most important part is a volunteer leader who is abiding in Christ and extended the grace of God to kids who don’t know Jesus.”

This means that Young Life needs godly people pouring into the kids’ lives. All of the events coordinated by Young Life are important, but volunteers play the most important role. Unlike VIM, Young Life is a international program. They work with kids all over the world, but VIM and Compassion are homegrown programs.

These volunteers all agree that these ministries are amazing opportunities to share Christ with others.

There is nothing like the joy of a child, and Vision in Motion gives me a chance to share in that joy. These kids are a blessing and a reminder to me that it’s the little things in life that matter.
