Larry Bartel, former director of KSIM and the guiding force behind our first graduating class, helped shape the foundation of excellence and community that continues to define our school. We are honoured to have him pen the inaugural foreword for our alumni magazine.

“THE HEART OF ANY SCHOOL LIES IN THE PEOPLE WHO DEDICATE THEMSELVES TO ITS MISSION.”

It is with great pride that I reflect on my time as Director of KSIM, particularly during those formative years when we saw our first cohort of IBDP students graduate as the Class of 2017.

When I joined in August 2015, KSI Montenegro was still a relatively young and growing institution, but filled with ambition, dedication, and a shared belief in the transformative power of education. As we embark on this journey of celebrating our alumni through this inaugural alumni magazine, I’m reminded of the milestones we achieved together as a community.

KSIM was a very small, close-knit school where teachers, staff, students, and parents wore many hats to ensure its success. I vividly remember the incredible teamwork and resilience displayed by the staff as we prepared for our first IBDP assessments. For many of our teachers, it was their initial experience with the demands of IB testing. Together, we navigated the challenges with a shared goal: to give our students the best possible foundation for success. The dedication of the staff, coupled with the enthusiasm of our students, made that first spring of exams a remarkable moment in KSIM’s history.

The Class of 2017 holds a special place in my heart. This inaugural group of graduates was a remarkable testament to the power of diversity and unity. Despite coming from different ethnic, cultural, and religious backgrounds, they forged deep bonds of friendship and support that have endured beyond their time at KSIM. They leaned on one another to achieve their goals, demonstrating the resilience and collaboration that are hallmarks of an IB education. Today, these graduates are spread across the globe, yet their shared experience at KSIM continues to connect them.

One of my proudest accomplishments was hiring and retaining an exceptional team of educators and staff. I firmly believe that the heart of any school lies in the people who dedicate themselves to its mission. Through collaborative committees that included teachers, admin staff, students, and parents, we built a team that embodied the values and vision of KSI.

Of course, my personal connection to KSIM runs even deeper. When an unexpected vacancy arose in the boarding school, my wife, Kim, and I stepped in to fill the role. We lived in the boarding school apartment, forging even more meaningful relationships with the students that remain to this day. These memories hold a special place in my heart, as do the lifelong friendships I have formed within the KSI Montenegro community.

To our alumni, especially those who were part of that historic first graduating class, I want to express my gratitude for the privilege of being part of your journey. Watching you grow and succeed, both at KSIM and beyond, has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my career. My hope is that you continue to embody the values of curiosity, resilience, and collaboration that defined your time at KSIM. To today’s students and those just beginning their IB journey, I offer this advice: embrace challenges as opportunities

“KSIM IS, AND ALWAYS WILL BE, ABOUT FOSTERING A CULTURE WHERE STUDENTS FEEL WELCOMED AND SUPPORTED, EMPOWERED TO ACHIEVE THEIR DREAMS, AND INSPIRED TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE.”

ate to eed it g, but ivated well in some sional o have dinary u for n this

As we each embark on our own journeys, my hope is that we’ll stay true to ourselves while always striving to become better versions of who we are. So here’s to the Class of 2024, to our shared memories, and to the bright futures ahead of us...

We did it, and we’re just getting started!
“STAY PHENOMENAL AND TRUE TO YOURSELF, YET ALWAYS STRIVE TO BECOME A BETTER VERSION OF YOURSELF.”

As I look back on can’t help but smile shared as the Class through the doors ago, I was a kid string together a sentence in English. My vocabulary was limited to “Hi,” “Bye,” and “So so,” and adjusting to Mr. Rob’s British accent felt like an insurmountable challenge!

One thing I’ll always cherish about our class is our collective determination. No matter how tough it got, we supported one another, and that shared strength helped us navigate even the hardest moments.

When I look at my classmates now, I see how much we’ve all grown. We’ve transformed into open-minded, intelligent individuals, ready to leave our mark on this intriguing, complex world. We’re not just 13 years older; we’re 13 years wiser, equipped with curiosity and the courage to tackle whatever comes next.

Graduating from KSIM wasn’t just the end of our time at school; it marked the beginning of something greater. At our Graduation Ceremony, as I stood on stage surrounded by my classmates, I realised how far we’d come - not just academically, but as people. We had grown into confident, curious, and determined young adults ready to face the future.

Reflecting on this journey, I feel immense gratitude - not just for the lessons learned, but for the friendships, laughter, and memories that will stay with me forever. We may have walked into KSI Montenegro as kids, but we walked out as young adults, ready to make our mark on the world. Here’s to the Class of 2024. We did it, and I couldn’t be prouder to have been part of this incredible journey.

Honestly, it’s not as unusual as one might imagine The staff were always approachable and friendly during my time as a student, which created a really strong foundation of respect and familiarity As a student in boarding, I had opportunities to spend more time and engage in deeper conversations with the staff than a day student might have This allowedmetobuildreallymeaningful

I make a conscious effort to keep these memories at the forefront while working with the students, especially in the boarding community Whether they’re dealing with academic challenges, with personal growth, or social dynamics, I strive to approach them with understanding

Looking back, how do you think KSIM prepared you for university and your career?

I believe being a KSIM and IB student prepared me exceptionally well, particularly in terms of studying, writing papers, and conducting research These skills are emphasised and rigorously developed throughout the IB programme, and they proved

to be invaluable when transitioning to university The focus on critical thinking, time management, and independent learning gave me the confidence to tackle the demanding workloadattheuniversitylevel

Additionally, the IBDP’s structure encouraged a well-rounded approach to learning Through subjects like TOK and the Extended Essay, I gained a deeper ability to analyse, question, and present ideas coherently - skills that are essential in higher education The programme's emphasis on balancing academics with creativity, action, and service (CAS) also helped me build resilience and maintain a more holistic perspective, which continues to benefit me in university andmylifebeyond

Whatadvicewouldyougivetocurrent KSIMstudents,particularlythose balancingacademiclife,leadershiproles, andextracurricularactivities?

From this perspective, I would say it's crucial to remember that you are just at the starting line of a much longer journey It's important to pace yourself - your energy, inspiration, and motivation - so you can sustain your efforts over time. While it’s wonderful to be highly active and involved in all areas of your life, it’s even more essential to prioritise taking care of yourself, both physicallyandmentally

Self-care isn’t just a luxury; it’s a necessity for long-term success and well-being There will always be opportunities to grow, achieve, and make an impact, but none of that is possible without a strong foundation of health and balance Remember, there is time - time to learn, time to make mistakes and time to succeed By being mindful of your limits and nurturing yourself, you set the stage for a more fulfilling and sustainable journeyahead

Now and Then: Celebrating Our International Community

As we look back at our journey, it’s amazing to see how far we’ve come since our first International Day celebration back in October 2016, when enrolment totalled just over 70 students who gathered to honour the diversity of nationalities, cultures, and traditions that made up our school community.

That inaugural celebration marked the beginning of a cherished tradition - a day when we come together to showcase and share the unique identities that make our school so extraordinary. Fast forward to October 2024, and our school and community have grown exponentially - with over 30 countries now represented, International Day has evolved as an even greater celebration of our global unity and understanding.

Yet, the heart of the tradition remains unchanged: a joyous coming together to celebrate the diversity that defines our community KSI Montenegro.

Now celebrated across a whole week, our school is filled with the sounds, colours, and tastes of the world - a testament to the enduring spirit of inclusion and celebration that began back in 2016.

The journey from our first International Day to now is a reflection of our growth as a community and our commitment to embracing and honouring the cultures that enrich all our lives. As we celebrated this year, we also celebrate the memories and milestones that have brought us to this moment. Here’s to the continuation of this tradition and the many more KSIM International Days to come!

Studyinginthe Netherlands Alumni Chronicles:

The Netherlands has become a popular destination for KSIM graduates pursuing higher education abroad. With its world-class education system, multicultural environment, and strong emphasis on innovation, the country is attracting a growing number of our alumni.

There has been a noticeable trend among our graduates: a significant number are opting to pursue their higher education in the Netherlands. But what is it that makes Holland such an attractive destination for university studies?

Through insights and stories shared by KSIM alumni who have studied or are currently studying there, it’s clear that a mix of academic excellence, programme variety, and cultural vibrancy is drawing our students to this European hotspot.

The Netherlands offers an impressive selection of globally ranked universities renowned for their innovative teaching methods. These institutions prioritise critical thinking, problem-solving, and interdisciplinary learning - core skills that align seamlessly with IB philosophy.

This, in addition to so many courses being taught in English, ensures that KSIM students are wellprepared to thrive in the dynamic and evolving academic environment of Dutch universities, fostering a smooth transition for students tackling a rapidly changing world.

As the global opportunities for higher education expand, KSIM alumni have increasingly set their sights on the Netherlands as a prime destination for academic and professional growth. The Dutch education system, renowned for its practical approach and emphasis on collaboration, has become a natural fit for our graduates. We explore why so many are thriving at Dutch universities.

The synergy that exists between the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme and the academic culture of the Netherlands is one of the most significant reasons why KSIM graduates choose Dutch universities Dutch institutions are globally respected for their emphasis on self-directed learning, critical thinking, and innovation - all core principles of the IB

İnal Taşçıoğlu (‘24), now a student at the University of Amsterdam, emphasised how the research-oriented nature of the IB prepared him for university life. “The importance of research and self-study became clear in my first few weeks here, skills I developed at KSIM,” he shared. Filip Prelević (‘23), who is studying at Tilburg University, emphasises the link to critical thinking. “My university values critical thinking skills, requiring us to write argumentative essays. I learned how to craft these essays and make critical analyses at KSIM,” Filip notes.

Another compelling factor for some is the straightforward application process. All Dutch universities recognise the IB Diploma as a highly robust qualification and many offer direct admission without requiring entrance exams. Erick Divin (‘21), who studied at the University of Twente, and now Breda University of Applied Sciences, appreciated this accessibility, noting that, “the universities accepted my IB Diploma seamlessly, which make the application process straightforward.” The link between academic excellence and practical learning are a key benefit. Dutch universities are known for blending academic rigour with hands-on, practical learning, making them particularly attractive to KSIM alumni.

Egor Obidin (‘21), now a graduate of Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), exemplifies this balance. During his bachelor’s in Computer Science and Engineering, Egor engaged in advanced robotics projects, collaborated with Aero Team Eindhoven on autonomous flight software, and participated in entrepreneurship workshops through the Honours Academy. Egor’s experience further highlights the Dutch emphasis on extracurricular learning, where students are encouraged to apply their knowledge in real-world contexts.

This approach resonates with many KSIM alumni, who are accustomed to combining academics with creativity and problem-solving. Similarly, Erick found his passion for game development at Breda University (BUas) as his programme, Creative Media and Game Technologies, mirrors industry structures,

preparing students for professional careers through project-based learning. “Our projects closely mirror industry structures, providing practical experience and preparing me for a professional career,” he shared.

For our KSIM alumni, the multicultural environment of the Netherlands is a cornerstone of their positive experiences. With a tradition of openness and inclusivity, Dutch universities attract students from around the world, creating dynamic, diverse communities. This international ethos mirrors the global perspective fostered by the IB programme, and at KSIM, making the Netherlands an excellent fit for graduates.

İnal, reflected on how his multicultural experience at KSIM prepared him for the diversity of his university

and city. “Amsterdam is one of my favourite places because of its beautiful scenery and vibrant international culture. I’ve met people from so many different backgrounds, which has expanded my perspective,” he said. Dina Nikolić (‘23), also at the University of Amsterdam, echoed this sentiment, highlighting how her sociological studies benefit from exposure to diverse worldviews. “The Netherlands fosters an environment where nonWestern cultural knowledge is integrated into academic discussions, which is incredibly enriching,” she shared The cultural exchange among students extends beyond academics, influencing personal growth and global understanding.

For Rodion Divin (‘24) now studying his first year at Tilburg University, the Netherlands' international environment made transitioning to university life

seamless. “The diversity at KSIM helped me adapt quickly to the multicultural setting here. It’s easy to connect with people from all over the world, and nearly everyone speaks English,” he said. This inclusivity ensures that international students feel welcomed and supported as they navigate their new academic and social lives.

Living and studying in a multicultural environment like the Netherlands also provides our alumni with invaluable opportunities to develop global competence. Exposure to diverse perspectives enhances critical thinking, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills - qualities that are essential in an interconnected world. As Erick emphasised the importance of teamwork in his game development programme at BUas. “Collaboration with peers from different countries has been central to my projects. It’s not just about completing tasks; it’s about understanding and integrating different viewpoints to create something innovative,” he explained.

For our alumni, the social networks they build in the Netherlands extend far beyond their university years. Cities like Amsterdam, Breda, Eindhoven, and Tilburg offer a range of cultural and social activities, from festivals and student organisations to international clubs and community events. “Having an active social life motivates me to stay on top of my studies because I value and want to maintain the life I’m building here,” İnal said.

The ability to navigate multicultural environments and collaborate effectively across cultures also gives KSIM alumni a competitive edge. Egor emphasised how teamwork with international peers prepared him for global challenges. “Working on international projects at TU/e mirrored the collaborative dynamics of the professional world, giving me practical experience that I’ll carry into my career.” For Erick, the connections he’s made during his studies have already begun opening doors in the gaming industry. “Networking with peers and professionals from around the world has been crucial for building a strong foundation for my career,” he shared. KSIM to the Vineya

Europe: A Journey of Passion and Growth inWinemaking

Bojan Krgović (’20) is a passionate winemaker and a proud KSIM alumnus whose journey really exemplifies the power of dedication and vision. His story, so far, is one of blending tradition, innovation, and academic rigour to redefine what it means to craft world-class wines.

Graduating from KSIM was just the beginning of an incredible journey that has taken me from my classrooms in Montenegro to some of Europe’s most renowned wine regions. It has been a path defined by my academic pursuits, hands-on experiences, and my passion for winemaking.

After earning my IB Diploma, I took a step forward by enrolling at Hochschule Geisenheim University in Germany, a premier institution recognised for its expertise in viticulture and enology. There, I did

a bachelor’s degree in International Wine Business, an innovative programme that aims to blend the technical, scientific, and commercial facets of the wine industry.

At Geisenheim, I was immersed in a curriculum that provided a strong foundation in winemaking. My courses in viticulture and enology introduced me to the science behind grape cultivation and winemaking, while specialised modules such as sensory analysis, wine chemistry, and microbiology sharpened my ability to assess and

refine wine quality. On the business side, classes in wine marketing, export management, and financial planning armed me with tools required to navigate the complexities of the global wine market. This combination of scientific knowledge and business strategy was a game-changer, particularly when I stepped into greater responsibilities at my family’s winery in Montenegro.

Each harvest season, from August to October, I returned home to do work hands-on at the winery. The insights gained through my coursework directly informed my approach during these harvests. These experiences not only deepened my love for winemaking but also solidified my role as the next-generation steward of our family business.

In 2023, I graduated from Hochschule Geisenheim and took another significant step in my professional journey by enrolling in Vinifera Euromaster, a prestigious master’s course in viticulture and enology; a programme coordinated by a consortium of Europe’s leading wine-focused universities, the has offered me a world-class education and invaluable exposure to the global wine industry. The first year of the Vinifera Euromaster was nothing short of transformative. I spent nine months at L’Institut Agro

in Montpellier in France and an additional month at Bordeaux Sciences Agro, two of Europe’s foremost institutions for viticulture and enology research. Here, I delved deeper into advanced viticultural techniques and wine production practices. Learning from industry experts and conducting fieldwork in these iconic regions was a really inspiring experience that also broadened my horizons and refined my winemaking philosophy.

Thanks to my performance, I was awarded a scholarship from Hochschule Geisenheim, an honour that has motivated me to strive even higher. Now in the second year of my master’s programme, I’ve returned to Geisenheim, focusing on my thesis while contemplating further research opportunities. My ambition is to contribute to advancements in winemaking, which are critical for the industry’s future.

Looking back, my journey from KSIM to Germany, France, and beyond has been a remarkable blend of academic rigour, practical immersion, and personal growth. I’m excited to continue exploring this further and look forward to the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.

A Pathway to Empowerment and Advocacy

Vera Kljajić’s story is one of transformation, resilience, and impact - a narrative deeply rooted in the values and education she received at KSIM; values that embody her ethos of kindness and global citizenship.

Life rarely follows a straight path, and for Vera Kljajić (née Pavković), a proud alumna of KSIM’s inaugural Class of 2017, her journey has been a series of twists and turns that have shaped her as the compassionate and accomplished individual she is today. From cherished boarding school memories to a meaningful career in the settlement field in Canada, Vera’s story exemplifies the transformative power of education, perseverance, and a global mindset cultivated at KSI Montenegro.

Vera was one of the bright young leaders invited to attend OYW 2024 in Montreal. Being the first female to represent Montenegro she was asked to be the flag-bearer at a summit that consisted of numerous workshops, networking events and conversations with people of influence in the areas of human rights, sustainability, health equality and migration.

Reflecting on her time at KSIM, Vera speaks fondly of the close-knit community and the enriching experiences that defined her formative years. She credits the bonds she formed with teachers, boarding parents, and peers as pivotal to her personal growth. “They always made me feel like I was strong enough to reach my goals, and that means everything to a young individual,” she recalls. “So many of my most cherished memories involve our numerous boarding activities and trips. Even as a Montenegrin, I discovered museums and activities I’d never known about before. Game nights, discussions, and shared moments with peers will forever hold a really special place in my heart.”

At KSIM, Vera believes she thrived in an environment that fostered confidence and self-worth. The encouragement and personalised support she received from the staff instilled a mindset that continues to guide her. “The supportive and open-minded environment shaped who I am today,” she shares. “It gave me the ability to approach different cultures with kindness and curiosity, a quality that’s invaluable in my work.”

The rigorous IB programme at KSIM was instrumental in shaping Vera’s academic and professional trajectory. “The programme didn’t just teach me content; it taught me how to study, the importance of balance, and the value of community involvement,” she says. Through CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service), Vera discovered her passions, including volunteering, which remains a central part of her life. “Academic success is important,” she adds, “but extracurriculars and community involvement are often what set you apart.” These lessons became evident as she transitioned to university, where her IB foundation gave her a distinct edge. After graduating, Vera pursued a Bachelor’s degree in International Hotel Management at Vatel School, inspired by her upbringing in Montenegro’s tourism-driven environment. “Living in Tivat sparked my interest in the hospitality industry. I’ve always loved working with people and promoting diversity, which the industry encourages.”

Vera’s internships spanned various departments, from Food & Beverage to Human Resources, providing her with a breadth of experience. While her career later pivoted, these experiences taught her adaptability and solutionoriented thinking. An unexpected career gap after becoming a mother presented new challenges. “The gap posed challenges I wasn’t prepared for,” she admits. However, resilience - a skill she attributes to her KSI educationhelped her navigate this period. She took on a government internship with a start-up blending tourism and social media before moving to Smithers, a town in northwestern British Columbia, Canada with her family.

In 2022, Vera, her husband, and their son moved to Smithers, British Columbia, trading the mountains of Montenegro for the breathtaking landscapes of Canada’s west coast.

“THE LESSONS FROM KSIM ARE NOT JUST MEMORIES - THEY’RE A WAY OF LIFE, SHAPING MY EVERY STEP FORWARD.”

Today, Vera works with an NGO that assists refugees and newcomers in Canada with settlement, integration, and employment. Her role involves building relationships with vulnerable groups, including some individuals who have spent years in refugee camps. “It’s a very rewarding job,” she says. “Kindness is more than an asset - it’s a must in the work that I do.”

The skills she developed at KSI Montenegro - notably organisation, teamwork, and open-mindedness - continue to benefit her in her professional life. “KSIM taught me there is nothing you can’t achieve if you set your mind to it and create habits to support it,” she reflects.

Vera’s aspirations are as ambitious as they are impactful. She aims to continue her work in the settlement field and hopes to collaborate with international organisations. Her ultimate goal is to contribute to initiatives that improve migration policies, ensuring dignity and opportunity for displaced populations worldwide. To enhance her expertise, Vera plans to pursue a Master’s degree in Public Policy or Diaspora Studies. In addition to her professional goals, she also envisions mentoring young people entering the settlement field, sharing her insights and experiences to inspire the next generation of advocates. “It’s so important to empower others, just as I was empowered during my time at KSIM,” she says.

To the KSI Montenegro community, Vera extends her heartfelt gratitude. “You were not just educators; you were my guides and support system,” she shares. “You showed us that the greatest learning happens when children feel loved, and at KSIM, I always felt that love ”

As Vera continues to advocate for vulnerable communities, her story serves as an inspiring reminder of the lasting impact of a nurturing and strong educational foundation “Not a day goes by that I don’t think of the love and guidance I received at KSIM,” Vera concludes. “The lessons from KSIM are not just memories - they’re a way of life, shaping my every step forward.”

Now based in London, Valeriya’s remarkable journey from KSIM student to being a professional scenographer is a testament to her passion, talent, and relentless pursuit of excellence.

After graduating from KSIM, Valeriya pursued her passion for scenography - a combination of set and costume design for stage and film - at the esteemed Rose Bruford College in London. Her years at KSIM, she recalls, laid the groundwork for her success.

VALERIYA VORONKINA (’20)

“The critical thinking and text analysis skills I gained in the IB at KSIM put me in a very strong position when looking at scripts that I needed to design,” Valeriya shares. This ability to dissect narratives and pinpoint their core lessons became a cornerstone of her artistic process, enabling her to craft designs that vividly portray characters and the worlds they inhabit.

During her final year at university, Valeriya began working in theatre, initially assisting seasoned designers and creating costumes, props, and puppets. Her dedication soon paid

off as she started securing commissions and taking on the responsibility of lead designer roles.

Today, her portfolio includes an impressive range of productions, including ‘On Railton Road’ at The Museum of the Home, ‘Rock n’ Roll’ by Tom Stoppard at the Hampstead Theatre, and ‘Pavillion’ by Emily White at Greenwich Theatre. Her expertise also extends to the unique world of puppetry, with contributions to the Little Angel Theatre, a hub for British puppetry, and an artist residency at the Papermoon Puppet Theatre in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Valeriya’s skill and rapidly growing reputation led her to earn a Global Talent Visa in the UK, as recognition of her exceptional contributions to the arts. Yet, she remains deeply grateful to her roots at KSIM, attributing much of her confidence and skill to the education and encouragement she received throughout her seven years as an

Valeriya’s journey is a testament to the power of persistence, creativity, and authenticity. Her advice to aspiring creatives is simple yet profound: “Don’t be afraid to show how you see the world.” She emphasises the importance of sharing one’s unique perspective, whether through art, storytelling, or social commentary.

“Interesting people are always curious to hear your honest opinion on what goes on around us politically and socially. It’s important that your story gets heard; you never know if it will be the next biopic on the big screen or a West End stage.”

With over thirty shows and exhibitions already under her belt, Valeriya continues to push the boundaries of design, capturing the essence of stories and transforming them into immersive theatrical experiences. Her work not only celebrates the craft of scenography but also inspires a new generation to pursue their passions with unwavering determination.

KSIM takes immense pride in spotlighting alumni like Valeriya, whose dedication and talent demonstrate the heights that can be achieved when great passion, and incredible talent meets opportunity.

Tasting Success with Data Analysis and Sustainable Innovation

“KSIM GAVE ME THE COURAGE TO THINK BEYOND CONVENTIONAL PATHS AND EQUIPPED ME WITH THE TOOLS TO TURN MY IDEAS INTO REALITY.”

Amid the global challenges that still lingered in 2021, after graduating from KSIM, Rizky Mohammad ('21) embarked on the next chapter of his personal and academic journey, moving to Belgium and earning a place at KU Leuven. With his steadfast commitment to innovation and sustainability, Rizky now thrives as a student in the Master’s programme in Information Management, specialising in Data Science. His story is a testament to resilience, adaptability, and the strong foundation built during his formative years at KSIM, which continues to inspire his pursuit of impactful solutions in an ever-evolving world.

Ricky identifies a spark that was ignited, and fondly recalls his time at KSIM as transformative. It was here, during Year 11, that his entrepreneurial spirit was ignited through a personal project: designing and selling merchandise. This endeavour, a cornerstone of the IB programme’s emphasis on creativity and action, taught him perseverance and the power of innovation. "KSIM gave me the courage to think beyond conventional paths and equipped me with the tools to turn ideas into reality," he shares.

KSIMs safe, nurturing environment, coupled with the rich diversity of our community, played a pivotal role in shaping his global perspective. Rizky’s time at KSIM was marked by unique challenges, including his stay in boarding during the pandemic, lockdowns, and limited opportunities to travel. He was unable to return to his homeland of Indonesia for almost the entirety of his final two, allimportant DP years.

Despite all these difficulties, Rizky acknowledges that the resilience and adaptability he developed

particularly as he overcame the challenge of learning in English, histhird language. “The KSI motto, Be all you can be, continues to guide me,” Rizky notes. “It’s something that has continued to guide me, and it reminds me that every challenge is an opportunity to grow.”

After completing his Bachelor’s in Business Administration at KU Leuven, Rizky was awarded a scholarship to study at the University of Sheffield, in the UK. This pivotal experience, where he delved into quantitative financial data, unveiled his passion for the intersection of business and technology. “I realised the immense potential of using data-driven insights to try to solve real-world challenges,” he explains. “It was this realisation that also directed me

towards specialising in Data Science for my Master’s studies.”

Rizky’s journey so far is marked by diverse and impactful experiences. In 2023, he interned for five months as a Junior Analyst at ASEANcham EU, the ASEAN Chamber of Commerce & Industry in Europe, based in Brussels. ASEANcham EU supports companies navigate the complexities of the

European single market and provide a collaborative platform between ASEAN businesses and European stakeholders. Rizky’s role involved supporting initiatives, deepening his understanding of international trade and economic policy. In 2024, Rizky expanded his expertise with an internship at the Economic Desk of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, working at the Indonesian Embassy in Brussels. This experience allowed him to contribute to bilateral economic relations, enhancing his ability to bridge diverse markets and cultures.

Currently, Rizky is interning at The Coca-Cola Company in Brussels, where he contributes to the Technical Innovation Supply Chain division. His work focuses mainly on developing Business Intelligence (BI) dashboards that can seamlessly integrate scientific innovations with market strategies. “This role is the perfect blend of analytics, strategy, and impact,” Rizky shares. “It allows me to connect innovation to tangible outcomes, that then drive meaningful change.”

Rizky Mohammad ('21) attributes much of his success to the foundational experiences at KSIM From overcoming language barriers to embracing diverse perspectives in a multicultural environment, KSIM provided the tools he needed to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.

These multifaceted experiences reflect Rizky’s commitment to combining data-driven insights with a global perspective to address real-world challenges and create sustainable solutions.

Beyond the corporate world, Rizky’s commitment to sustainable development shines through his involvement with Academics for Development (AFD) at KU Leuven. As part of a yearlong project in Uganda, Rizky is addressing critical issues of waste management and economic sustainability. His team collaborates with a local social entrepreneur in Wakiso, who employs vulnerable groups to produce shoe brushes from eco-friendly materials.

“THE KSI MOTTO CONTINUES TO GUIDE MEIT’S SOMETHING THAT HAS CONTINUED TO GUIDE ME, AND IT REMINDS ME THAT EVERY CHALLENGE IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO GROW.”

The project tackles the dual challenges of inflation and waste caused by synthetic brushes. By using cow tail hair - a locally available, sustainable material - the initiative seeks to replace imported synthetic brushes with more affordable, durable, and ecofriendly alternatives. Rizky’s team will travel to Uganda next summer to implement these solutions, empowering local communities and supporting micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). “This initiative really exemplifies how innovation can drive sustainable economic growth, and is something I am incredibly honoured and proud to be part of,” he reflects.

Rizky attributes much of his success to the skills and values he gained at KSIM. The IB programme’s emphasis on inquiry and action encouraged him to really embrace diverse perspectives and try to engage in meaningful dialogue, preparing him for the challenges of international study and collaboration. “KSIM wasn’t just about academics - it was also about fostering a mindset of curiosity and determination,” he emphasises.

As Rizky prepares for the next phase of his exciting journey, he carries with him the lessons of his time at KSIM. From entrepreneurial endeavours in school to sustainable initiatives on a global scale, his story exemplifies the profound impact of an IB education. Through resilience, adaptability, and a passion for making a difference, Rizky has continued to embody the spirit of KSIM’s in seeking opportunities and being be all he can be. For the current students and alumni, Rizky’s journey is an inspiring reminder of what can be achieved when curiosity meets opportunity, and when a supportive foundation encourages individuals to dream big and act boldly.

SARA ILIĆ (‘21)
BARBARA DAVIDOVIĆ (‘20)
JANA RADONJIĆ (‘20)

Currently, I am living in London while pursuing my MSc degree in Finance at The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). The programme is an intensive journey into areas such as Corporate Finance, Asset Markets, and Mergers, Buyouts & Corporate Restructurings.

Before coming to LSE, I completed my undergraduate degree at Bocconi University in Milan, earning a BSc in International Economics and Finance with a graduation score of 108/110, along with cum laude distinctions in several subjects. During my time at Bocconi, I was deeply involved in extracurricular activities, particularly as a senior member and project leader in a student-led consulting association, where I contributed to and managed multiple impactful projects.

My professional journey has also been enriching. Most recently, I interned at Generali Group in Podgorica, Montenegro, where I analysed trends in client complaints to improve internal processes. Prior to that, I spent nearly three months with the Boston Consulting Group in Budapest, engaging in industry-specific analysis and policy

global challenges. Alongside my academic pursuits, I’ve had the chance to explore some unique opportunities. Working as a seller of luxury apartments has given me valuable realworld experience in negotiation, and client relations. These roles have not only sharpened my professional skills but also reinforced the importance of adaptability and effective communication - essential qualities for work in diplomacy.

Travel has been another major part of my life. Driven by a passion for exploring new cultures and countries, I make it a goal to try to visit one new destination every month. These adventures have broadened my horizons and provided rich insights into diverse perspectives. Two destinations, in particular, stand out: Armenia and Belgium. In Armenia, I found myself immersed in a living history - Armenia’s deep historical roots and vibrant cultural identity left its mark on me. Belgium, on the other hand, offered me a different kind of inspiration. As someone interested in politics and diplomacy, visiting the European Parliament in Brussels was an eye-opening experience. The building itself is a testament to the power of international cooperation and policymaking - a moment that reaffirmed my desire and dedication to studying diplomacy.

These experiences have taught me that diplomacy and security extend far beyond the classroom. They are shaped by history, culture, and the lived experiences of people worldwide. As I continue my studies and chart my path forward, I am excited for what lies ahead, knowing that each step brings new opportunities to learn and grow.

It’s incredible to reflect on how much has changed since my time at KSIM. Today, I’m pursuing a degree at Univerzitet Union - Nikola Tesla, Faculty of Diplomacy and Security in Belgrade. My studies in this fascinating field have deepened my understanding of international relations, global security, and the complex dynamics that shape our world. It’s a journey that has shown me the critical importance of peace, cooperation, and corporate security in navigating today’s

journey has been an exciting growth. I studied a Bachelor Engineering at the Eindhoven (TU/e) in the Netherlands and successfully graduated this past summer.

Beyond academics, I delved into various extracurricular activities that fuelled my passion for technology and innovation. For two years, I was also part of Aero Team Eindhoven, where I had the opportunity to work on mechatronics and autonomous flight software. These handson experiences not only sharpened my technical skills but also deepened my appreciation for teamwork and real-world problem-solving. Additionally, being part of the university’s Honors Academy was a remarkable opportunity. I was able to collaborate on robotics projects, explored academic research through paper writing, and participated in engaging entrepreneurship workshops.

After two transformative gap years, I am now continuing my academic journey at Bard College, nestled on a breathtaking campus in Upstate New York, USA. I joined Bard in August 2024, but the road that led me here to Bard was far from

As a second-year sociology student at the University of Amsterdam, I couldn’t be happier with my decision to study here. The leap from my experiences in student leadership at KSIM to becoming an active participant in university governance has been both rewarding and transformative.

Currently, I serve as a member of the Central Student Council, working alongside the Executive Board on key issues such as house rules, ethical collaborations, and university budgets. This role has been a challenging yet gratifying opportunity to help shape policies that directly impact the student body. As Chair of Education and Research, I’ve been able to focus on areas I’m deeply passionate about, such as diversity, mental

wellbeing, and accreditation processes like Model OER and ITK. Stepping into university politics has been a new and exciting chapter for me. Representing the Activistenpartij, I was honoured to secure the second spot on our candidate list during the May elections - a significant milestone for a second-year student navigating the dynamic landscape of university politics for the first time.

My time at university isn’t solely defined by my work on the council. My academic journey in sociology has been equally enriching. Studying in the Netherlands has opened my eyes to a world of diversity, allowing me to meet people from countries and cultures I had previously only read about. These interactions have deepened my understanding of global societies and the complex factors that shape them. This rich diversity, paired with Amsterdam’s vibrant political culture, has been a constant source of inspiration. Advocating for ideals that align with both the university’s values and the inclusive, equitable world we envision has instilled in me a profound sense of purpose and community. Together, academic exploration and activism have shaped my time here in the most meaningful way.

Amsterdam itself is a city of boundless inspiration. Beyond the picturesque canals and iconic bicycles, it serves as a hub of ideas, culture, and innovation. The connections I’ve forged here—in my studies, activism, and everyday life -have made this city feel like home. It’s a place that continually motivates me to strive for meaningful change, both within the university council and in the broader world. Looking ahead, I am excited to build on these transformative experiences. conducting incredible people remain a cornerstone of my personal and professional growth.

One of my proudest moments during this time was contributing to two of Serbia’s largest student-led conferences - New Leaders Conference and Youth Speak Conference. These events brought together ambitious students and young professionals across five major cities, creating incredible platforms for learning, networking, and inspiration. Witnessing the success of these conferences on such a large scale was deeply fulfilling and fuelled my passion for leadership and event organisation.

In my second year of studies, I decided to take my marketing skills to the next level and applied for an internship at the Hyatt Regency Belgrade, one of the most prestigious business hotels in the region. Being selected for this role was a milestone in my journey. The internship offered me invaluable insights into the world of hospitality marketing, and after successfully completing it alongside my studies, I was thrilled to be offered a permanent position on their Marketing team. As my bachelor’s studies drew to a close, I began exploring opportunities to further my education. The prospect of studying abroad was incredibly exciting, and I was honoured to receive two prestigious scholarships: one from Ca’ Foscari University of Venice and another from Budapest Business University through the Hungarian Government’s Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship.

In 2020, I made the decision to move to continue my academic journey at the University Tesla, pursuing a BSc in Entrepreneurial and Business From the very start, I was determined to make experience meaningful - not just academically, embracing every opportunity for personal and growth. This opportunity allowed me to continue contributing to an organisation I greatly admired while adapting to a new work dynamic. Moving to Budapest has been an exciting new chapter in my life. It has brought fresh opportunities, new friendships, and a chance to immerse myself in a completely different environment. I’m incredibly grateful for the journey that has brought me here and for the experiences that have shaped me along the way. This chapter is a blend of learning, growth, and exploration, and I can’t wait to see where this path will lead me next.

Since my time at KSIM, I’ve been on an incredible journey of growth and discovery. Just a few months ago, I graduated from RIT Croatia and was deeply honoured to be named Valedictorian of the Class of 2024. It was an unforgettable privilege to travel to the USA and represent the university at

the main campus graduation ceremony in Rochester this past May. During my final semester, I had the opportunity to delve into research for my senior project, guided by wonderful mentors who inspired and challenged me every step of the way. I’m thrilled to share published in the RITThink online journal next year.

semester as an exchange student at the Business School of the Escola de Administração de Empresas de São Paulo at Fundação Getulio Vargas in Brazil. This opportunity promises to broaden my academic and cultural horizons further, equipping me with a truly global perspective as I prepare to embark on the next stage of my professional journey.

Greetings from the Windy City! I’m currently in my final year at Columbia College Chicago, where I’m doing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Architecture. It’s been an incredible journey, filled with challenges, growth, and unforgettable experiences. At the moment, I’m wrapping up my third internship as a Junior Designer at Charlie Greene Studio, an inspiring and innovative interior design firm specializing in corporate spaces. This role has given me hands-on experience in shaping environments that enhance productivity and creativity - skills I can’t wait to carry forward into my career.

Since September 2022, I have been deeply engaged in my academic journey at Bocconi University in Milan, pursuing a degree in International Economics and Finance. This experience has offered me the privilege of learning from some of the most distinguished experts in the field, while challenging myself to meet the demands of the university’s rigorous curriculum.

To enrich my education, I have prioritised gaining practical, hands-on experience across both the public and private sectors. In the summer of 2023, I had the privilege of working as a Visiting Associate at the Central Bank of Montenegro. This internship provided me with an invaluable immersion into the public sector, where I contributed to the Resolution of Credit Institutions team during the first half of my tenure. In the latter half, I shifted to the Financial and Banking Operations sector, gaining a comprehensive understanding of how public financial institutions function and address challenges. Building on this foundation, I transitioned to the private sector in the summer of 2024, joining the American Bank of Investments as a summer analyst. This role not only deepened my understanding of private financial operations but also reinforced my passion for integrating academic knowledge with practical, real-world applications. As I approach the final stretch of my undergrad, I am eagerly anticipating an exciting new chapter: spending my final

Living in Chicago has been amazing! From exploring the city's rich architectural history to soaking in its vibrant arts and culture scene, I’ve found so much inspiration here. The dynamic energy of the city fuels my creativity every day, and I’m beyond excited to continue building my future in this really is an amazing place. As graduation approaches, I feel both grateful and eager for what lies ahead. I’m looking forward to stepping into the professional world, applying the lessons I’ve learned at Columbia and through my internships, and making my mark in the field of interior design and architecture.
