Despite a sky which threatened rain and high humidity, a crowd of people turned out for the opening and ribbon cutting for the Uxbridge Fire Museum on Saturday, June 22nd The program began at 1 p m with pipes and drums, then members of the Blackstone Valley Chorus sang the national anthem In thanking the people who had helped support the creation of the museum, Harry Romasco noted that “great things happen when you surround yourself with great people ” Romasco, an Uxbridge resident, has been involved with bringing the museum project to fruition for many years He is currently the museum’s president
The museum is housed in the old fire station located at 313 North Main Street in Uxbridge, near the CVS pharmacy The building was constructed in 1903 and served the town as a fire station for 108 years Uxbridge town manager, Steve Sette said that while he was looking forward to new memories, the museum was a “great reminder of how far we’ve come ” After no longer being used as a fire station, many Uxbridge residents felt the building could not be saved The museum was previously housed in a much smaller space on Depot Street but has now given the old station on North Main Street a new purpose
Former Uxbridge fire chief and state fire marshal, Peter Ostroskey talked briefly about the history of the building
and the Uxbridge fire department then teased, “I’m not going to tell you the rest of the story It’s better told by seeing the museum ” All Uxbridge residents were urged to visit the museum
State reps Mike Sotor and Joe McKenna as well as a representative from Senator Ryan Fattman’s office were also in attendance A restored 1937 Maxim fire truck was on display at the event as
well as an old fire bell which was rung for fallen Uxbridge fire fighters at the beginning of the ceremony The ribbon for the ribbon cutting ceremony was yellow tape which said “Fire Line Do Not Cross”
The museum is open to the public and staffed by volunteers For more information, please visit the museum’s Facebook page

One of the wonderful things about living in a small town is the willingness of its residents, both businesses and individuals, to come forward and support a worthwhile cause that makes their community better, and the Town of Douglas and Webster First Federal Credit Union live up to that standard
The Douglas Common Preservation Society, Inc is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a mission of maintaining and beautifying the Townowned Douglas Common, and we received a wonderful surprise call last month from the Douglas Branch of Webster First Federal Credit Union looking for information about all the work we do at the Common and telling us about their Jeans Day Program and their desire to support us
“Webster First is a community focused credit union and many of our employees also live in the communities that we serve That’s why we feel it’s so important to give back when we can On the last Friday of the month, our employees donate $5 to dress casually for the day Each month, a different branch chooses a local organization to donate those funds to so we can help communities throughout all of central Massachusetts and the greater Boston
area The Douglas Branch chose to make their Jeans Day donation to Douglas Common Preservation Society, Inc , ” explained Jenn Gosselin, the Douglas Branch Manager
Jenn, accompanied by two other Webster First employees, Chloe Graca and Kelly Donnelly, were happy to present their $400 check to Douglas Common Preservation Society, Inc

The Girl Scouts of Central and Western Massachusetts is celebrating the 2024 class of Gold Award Girl Scouts: sixteen teen world-changers in central and western Massachusetts who invested nearly thirteen hundred hours creating lasting impact on issues important to them
The Gold Award is the highest achievement a Girl Scout can earn, available to girls in high school who create sustainable change on a community or world issue From creating access to menstrual hygiene products to addressing COVID-19 isolation, Gold Award Girl Scouts address the root cause of a problem, plan and implement innovative solutions to drive change, and lead a team of people to success
“Earning the Gold Award is a distinguished honor that sets Gold Award Girl Scouts apart from their peers”, said Theresa Lynn, GSCWM CEO “As they take action to transform their world, they gain tangible, real-world skills and prove they are the leaders that campuses and communities need ” The teens were honored recently at the Girl Scout Gold Award and Silver Award Ceremony at Mechanics Hall in Worcester Sophia Kay of Uxbridge was among them
Sophia’s Gold Award emphasis addressed the issue of raising awareness and easing the anxiety of patients newly diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes Her own diagnosis and lack of readily available age-appropriate resources spurred her on She spread awareness through the publication of a children's book and creation of art constructed from diabetes supplies The artwork, titled “New Life after Type 1” is inspired by the Tree of Life She constructed it out of 365 syringe plungers, 24 insulin caps, and 7 flowers each made of a Dexcom CGM transmitter, a syringe, and an insulin vial The numbers of each medical supply represent the 365/24/7 routine that is Type 1 Diabetes One goal was to recycle what would otherwise be considered medical waste, while also showing that beauty can be found in all situations Her goal for her children’s book was to give readers a clearer understanding of what
Type 1 Diabetes is, and give them access to a simple way to explain it to their friends Her children's book has been published and her art piece is a permanent fixture on the wall of the Pediatric Ward and Child Life Room at Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston
“Through Girl Scouts I was able to try new things, make new friends, and have fun doing things I normally would not have the chance to do ” Sophia will attend Roger Williams University to study Marine biology Changing the world doesn’t end when a Girl Scout earns her Gold Award:
96% of Gold Award Girl Scouts say their experience inspired their ongoing commitment to service or volunteering, and 95% say it made them more responsible members of their communities

On May 26, 1934, when 55-year-old J D Bousquet, Sr , opened a service station at 37 Main Street, Manchaug, around the lowest point of the Great Depression Could he have imagined that 90 years later his great, great granddaughter would be driving a tow truck for this same company? Most likely not, but he probably did hope That is exactly what happened Five generations of Bousquet family members have operated this service station/ heating oil/towing company out of the same location for 90 years
The operation started out of a small building which was moved down Main Street to Mr Bousquet’s land On Friday, December 10, 1937 at 8:15 pm, that structure burned to the ground
This did not deter Mr Bousquet, who, with his sons, Del and Ted, operated out of old hen coops, with an outdoor car lift, until a new garage was constructed about a year later The new structure saw several additions as the business branched out and grew By 1954, J D Bousquet & Sons, Inc was not only a
service station, but one of the largest auto dealer agencies, oil and heating businesses, and rural bottled gas businesses in the Blackstone Valley The Company operated school buses for the Town of Sutton, too
Mr Bousquet took civic responsibility seriously having served on Sutton’s Welfare Board for several terms and donating the land for a 3-acre park in honor of returning WWII veterans which still exists today as The American Legion Park in Manchaug After his death in 1960, his sons, Del and Ted continued the business Many Sutton old timers will remember Del and his red wrecker towing many locals out of some hairy situations Del’s son, Paul, and grandson, Nick, followed in Del’s footsteps both having careers in the towing/recovery industry The company is still affiliated with AAA today The 1970s were tough, but the business continued on Currently, grandson, Ted, is at the helm with sons, Chris and Corey, and grandchildren Brandon and Brianna Along the way, many other
family members and Manchaug residents were employed by this small business, including about 25 employees in the 1960s
Today, Bousquet’s still delivers home heating oil, provides heating system maintenance, sells diesel fuel, performs automotive maintenance, is a state inspection sticker location, and provides light, medium and heavy duty 24/7 towing and recovery When you call this family-owned business, your call is answered by an employee, many times by Ted, himself, not a voice system prompting you to navigate through number selections On-call employees still head out in the dead of night to assist at crash sites, tow stranded vehicles, or get your heating system back up and running
Wishing J D Bousquet & Sons, Inc the best as it pushes forward to its next milestone, 100 years As always, this great small business can be reached at 508-476-7421 or at jdbousquetandsons com
