Strange, but true

Trivia test

By Samantha Weaver

By Fifi Rodriguez

It was poet, philosopher and satirist Horace, who lived in the first century B.C., who made the following sage observation: "He who postpones the hour of living is like the rustic who waits for the river to run out before he crosses." Legislators in Vermont once found it necessary to outlaw whistling while underwater. If someone were to ask you to name the sunniest spot on Earth, you might be tempted to answer "the Sahara Desert" or some other such exotic place. You would be wrong, though; that distinction belongs to a town right here in America. Out of the possible 4,456 daylight hours each year, the sun shines for an average of 4,050 in Yuma, Arizona. That means that there's cloud cover or rain for only about 10 percent of the time there. You might be surprised to learn that, according to those who study such things, Alaskans eat twice as much ice cream per capita than the rest of the nation. Those who have the time to study such things claim that the most difficult small object to flush down a toilet is a ping-pong ball. In 2010 a new species of slug was discovered in the mountains of Borneo. It is distinguished from other species of slug by its novel method of mating: It shoots its mate with a so-called love dart made of calcium carbonate and containing hormones. The researchers nicknamed the gastropods "ninja slugs." Other than the fact that they're all performers, what do Darryl Hannah, Telly Savalas, James Doohan and Jerry Garcia have in common? They are (or were) missing one finger. It was 18th-century French writer Sebastien Nicolas de Chamfort who made the following sage observation: "Conscience is a dog that does not stop us from passing but that we cannot prevent from barking." You might be surprised to learn that famed British author Aldous Huxley, best-known for his dystopian novel "Brave New World," was a consultant on Disney's 1951 animated film version of "Alice in Wonderland." If you bring to mind an image of John Lennon, more likely than not you'll see him in your mind's eye wearing a pair of round spectacles. In July 2007, a single pair of those iconic glasses was sold at auction for a whopping $2 million. The tongue of the alligator is fastened to the jaw all the way around. That's why you'll never see a gator stick out its tongue. You might be surprised to learn that the kilt originated not in Scotland, but in France. You probably know that certain species of snakes can grow to enormous size, with the longest specimens reaching upward of 30 feet in length and the heaviest weighing more than 400 pounds. Kind of makes you wonder what these monstrous serpents eat - and you might be surprised. According to reports, a pet python named Houdini swallowed a queen-size electric blanket. Even more amazingly, after a twohour operation, the snake lived! Those who track radio statistics say Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" is the most-requested song in the United States - and this despite the fact that it was never released as a single on this side of the Atlantic.

Grilled jerk pork brings the heat Pork uses the traditional marinade recipe; however, other spices can be incorporated to create your own flavorful variation.

By Angela Shelf Medearis Caribbean dishes exhibit the influence of a wide variety of cultures and cuisines, including British, Dutch, French, Spanish, East Indian, West African, Portuguese and Chinese. The cooking technique that made Jamaica famous is the spicy jerk marinade that's used for both meats and vegetables. The name is derived from the way the meat is poked or "jerked" with a sharp object to create the holes where spices are inserted. Jerk cooking dates back to the CaribArawak Indians who inhabited Jamaica in the 17th century. After capturing an animal and thoroughly cleaning it, the carcass was "jerked," and the resulting holes were stuffed with a variety of spices. Hot peppers and herbs were plentiful on the islands and were used as a preservative before refrigeration was available. The combination of spices also acted as a marinade and a way to tenderize tough cuts of wild game. To cook the jerked meat, the Indians dug a deep pit and lined it with stones. The pit was filled with green pimento wood, which, when burned, would smoke heavily and add to the flavor. The holes that were "jerked" into the meat also allowed heat to escape without loss of moisture. Using marinades based on hot peppers and herb combinations was created by the

Jerk Pork

Indians and the West African Cormantee -who also were called Maroons, the name given to slaves who escaped the plantations -- to flavor and preserve a variety of meats. Jerk marinade is composed of four main ingredients: Scotch Bonnet peppers, whole allspice berries, scallions (also called green onions or spring onions) and thyme. For best results, the meat should marinate in the refrigerator for 12 to 24 hours. After marinating in the jerk spices, the meat should slowly be smoked over a low fire. Using pimento (allspice), apple, mesquite or hickory wood chips provides an intense smoke that will permeate the meat and create an authentic jerk flavor. The wood chips should be soaked in water for at least 30 minutes before placing them on the coals. This slow smoking method also makes the meat moist and tender. Jerk marinades are a wonderful way to add spice and a touch of the Caribbean to your barbeque menu. This recipe for Jerk

Jerk marinades typically use Scotch Bonnet peppers, one of the hottest peppers in the world. Remember to always wear gloves when preparing fresh peppers. It's best to remove the stems and seeds with your gloved fingers or paring knife. Removing the seeds doesn't affect the flavor, but greatly decreases the heat. Afterward, always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and cold water, and clean any utensils or surfaces you have used. 1/3 cup vegetable oil 1/3 cup distilled white vinegar 4 green onions, chopped 2 cloves garlic, chopped 2 to 5 Scotch Bonnet peppers, seeded and minced, to taste 3 bay leaves 3 peppercorns 1 tablespoon dried ground cinnamon 3 to 4 whole allspice berries, lightly crushed 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg 3 pounds pork chops, about 1 inch thick

1. Combine the oil and vinegar in a small bowl. Stir in the green onions, garlic, peppers, bay leaves, peppercorns, cinna-

mon, allspice, pepper and nutmeg. 2. Trim any excess fat from the pork chops. Place pork chops in a re-sealable plastic bag. Pour the spice mixture over them, coating each chop well. Put the bag of pork chops in a baking pan and place in the refrigerator to marinate for up to 24 hours, turning once or twice every four hours. 3. Allow the chops to come to room temperature before grilling. Heat the grill until the coals are somewhat white with ash; the flame should be low. Place the chops on the grill and cover with the lid. Grill for 5 to 10 minutes per side, until the chops are no longer pink in the center. Serves 4 to 6. Strategies parents can use to motivate students

Video/DVD Reviews By Amy Anderson "The Rider" (R) - Chinese-American director Chloe Zhao helms this sweetly heartbreaking story of a young rodeo upand-comer who struggles to find meaning after an injury leaves him unable to participate in the sport that had come to define his confidence. Brady (Brady Jandreau) is left with seizures after being thrown from a bull, and is informed that with repeated riding, they will only get worse. What is more meaningful: a longer life drained of purpose, or a short but full existence doing what you love? Interestingly, the story is inspired by the lead actor's real life, although fictionalized, and the film is populated with people, not actors: Jandreau's father plays his father, and sister plays his sister. Set in the hauntingly beautiful and bereft Badlands of South Dakota, it works, as do its players. "Life of the Party" (PG-13) - In an attempt to prove that it's never too late to get that college degree - and a truckload of revenge - Melissa McCarthy stars as Deanna, a 40-something mom who gets blindsided by her jerk husband after they deliver their daughter (Mollie Gordon) to Decatur University: He's divorcing her, and he's got all the money since she quit college to take care of the kids. But the joke's on him, because she signs up to finish her final year alongside her daughter and gets busy living that co-ed life. Another McCarthy/Ben Falcone production, it's funny, but not over-the-top funny. Maya Rudolph stars as Deanna's loud and lovely best friend Christine, and Debby Reynolds has a cute drop-in as the resident mean girl. "Breaking In" (PG-13) - Shaun (Gabrielle Union) is on a weekend trip to her recently deceased father's remote estate to close up shop and list it for sale. She is accompanied by her teen daughter and school-age son. Dad's place is seriously swanky with serious security. As it turns out, a gaggle of burglar bad guys

Billy Howle, Saoirse Ronan in "On Chesil Beach" (headed by Billy Bragg) are on the premises to find a hidden boatload of cash. When they kidnap the kids but don't manage to snag Shaun, she must fight for her family using brains, brawn and her maternal instincts. I have been a huge fan of Gabrielle Union ever since "Bring It On" and she definitely has the chops for both action and to carry a movie. But not this one. Let's just say it's not her best showcase and leave it at that. "On Chesil Beach" (R) - Saoirse Ronan and Billy Howle play Florence and Edward, a pair of newlywed virgins who approach their awkward first night as man and wife from vastly different positions, each colored by personal experiences and the communication constraints of traditionalist, upper-crust 1962 England. The story is told interspersed with flashbacks of their sublime courtship and other pertinent memories. It is based on the Booker Prize-winning novella by Ian McEwan, who also adapted the story. Hollywood By Tony Rizzo At last it's been confirmed, and we can tell you what Quentin Tarantino has planned for Oscar-winner Leonardo DiCaprio and three-time Oscar-nominee Brad Pitt in his film "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood." The story is about former Western series cowboy Rick Dalton (DiCaprio) and his best friend and longtime stunt double Cliff Booth (Pitt), set in 1969, with the Manson family murders as the backdrop for the story. As a reporter covering the Hollywood scene when the Manson clan murdered actress Sharon Tate and her friends on Cielo Drive, I remember discos, clubs and restaurants shuttered because celebrities were crippled with fear. In fact, none of them left their homes for weeks until they found out who was behind it all. I chatted with Sharon Tate and Jay Sebring at The Factory the night before the murders and was visited the next week by the FBI, who wanted to know what we talked about. Tarantino is pulling out all the stops to make this a big film about Hollywood. He's also cast Margot Robbie, Timothy Olyphant, Luke Perry, Dakota Fanning, Al Pacino, Emile Hirsch, Tim Roth and Nicholas Hammond, (original TV series "Spider-Man"). "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" opens Aug. 19, 2019. Hollywood is so fickle. Dwayne Johnson rode "Jumanji, Welcome to the Jungle" to just short of $1 billion at the box office and "Rampage" to $426 million, but because his latest release, "Skyscraper," came in third its first week, behind the animated "Hotel Transylvania 3" and "Ant-Man and the Wasp," with a mere $71.6 million (more than half its cost), they think he's off his game. When the kids are done watching their cartoons and superheroes, the rest of us will be thrilled by "The Rock" climbing his skyscraper. He's not worried though; he's already moved on to filming "Jungle Cruise" with Emily Blunt, Paul Giamatti and Jack Whitehall for an October 2019 release. Harrison Ford must have been disappointed when "Indiana Jones 5" was put off for two years, but he got over it quick by signing to drive a dog sled in the remake of Jack London's "The Call of the Wild," which was most memorably made with Oscar-winners Clark Gable (1935) and Charlton Heston (1972). Maybe playing a wilderness prospector in the Yukon will finally earn Harrison Ford an Oscar, as it did for Leonardo DiCaprio in "The Revenant" (2015). (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Students may need some time to adjust at the beginning of a new school year. Summer vacations typically lack the structure of the school year, and it might be unfair to expect kids to seamlessly slip back into their more regimented lives as students. While some early school year sluggishness might be normal, that should wear off pretty quickly. If not, and students appear to be struggling to get motivated for their schoolwork, parents can try various strategies that should help reignite youngsters’ passions for learning. • Make your home more school-friendly. Summer is a relaxing time of year when parents have a tendency to relax rules around the house. But come the school year, parents must make sure their homes are as conducive to studying as possible. Resist the urge to turn the television on each night so students are not distracted from their studies. Keep the home quiet so students are motivated to focus on their studies. • Encourage participation in extracurricular activities. Various studies have examined the relationship between extracurricular activities and academic performance. A 2002 study published in the journal Sociology of Education found that participation in extracurricular activities is associated with improved grade point average, increased college attendance and reduced absenteeism. The link between participation in extracurricular activities and improved academic performance is still in need of study, but such participation may help children acclimate to the structure of the school year more quickly than they might if they do not participate in such activities. • Encourage curious youngsters. Kids are curious, and fostering that curiosity can be a great way for parents to get their kids excited about learning. Whether it’s during the school year and part of their curriculum or on summer break, encourage

kids to engage in subjects that interest them. As kids learn more about the topics and subjects that interest them, they may develop a passion for learning that they can then take with them to the classroom. • Express an interest in the subjects children are studying. Another way to motivate students at the dawn of a new school year is to express an interest in the subjects they’re studying. Ask questions about their studies and encourage them to share their thoughts and opinions. Engaging students about the subjects they’re studying can motivate them to explore those subjects more deeply than they otherwise might. Motivating kids to be excited about their schoolwork at the dawn of a new school year can sometimes be difficult. But parents can employ various strategies that can help their children readjust to life in the classroom and motivate them to perform to the best of their abilities.

According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, anxiety disorders are the most common mental illnesses in the United States. Roughly 40 million adults in the United States, or 18 percent of the country's population, has an anxiety disorder. Developing from a complex set of risk factors, including genetics, brain chemistry, personality, and life events, anxiety disorders are highly treatable. Unfortunately, the ADAA notes that less than 40 percent of those suffering from anxiety disorders receive treatment. Treatment of anxiety disorders can be highly effective and can even help people deal with other disorders, as the ADAA says nearly one-half of people diagnosed with depression are also diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. People living with anxiety disorders who seek treatment may find they also are suffering from depression, compelling them to receive treatment for that disorder as well and further improving their quality of life.
