Trivia test

It was one of the most influential directors in the history of cinema, Alfred Hitchcock - also known as the "Master of Suspense" - who made the following sage observation: "The length of a film should be directly related to the endurance of the human bladder." In Murfreesboro, Tennessee, it is illegal to keep indoor furniture outdoors. The town of Llanfair in Wales is also known by its Welsh name, Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrnd robwllllantsiliogogogoch. Roughly translated, this means, "Saint Mary's Church in a hollow of white hazel, close to a whirlpool and Saint Tysilo's Church and near a red cave." The sign at the railway station that has the town's name is 20 feet long. Those who study such things say that cockroaches can run as fast as 3 mph. You probably don't realize it - and you certainly don't notice it - but experts claim that the Atlantic Ocean is getting about 1 centimeter bigger every year, and the Pacific Ocean is shrinking by the same amount. It's due to continental drift, they say. Linguists say that American English has roughly 20 swear words (depending, of course, on how one defines swearing). In contrast, residents of ancient Rome had a lexicon of about 800 so-called "dirty" words to draw upon. The tuatara is a lizard that can be found in New Zealand. Its claim to fame? It has a third eye, located on the top of its head. If you counted up all the McDonald's, Dunkin' Donuts, Pizza Hut, Burger King, Domino's Pizza, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Wendy's and Taco Bell locations in the United States and added them together, you still wouldn't reach the number of pharmacy locations across the country. It was American actress, screenwriter and notorious sex symbol Mae West who made the following sage observation: "You only live once. But if you do it right, once is enough." The world's highest tides are found in the Bay of Fundy, located in Nova Scotia, Canada. There, the difference between high and low tides can be as much as 50 feet. If you're a blood donor, you're part of a significant minority. In the United States, less than 5 percent of the population donates blood every year. The first sound recording ever made was created in 1877 by Thomas Edison. It was a musical selection: "Mary Had a Little Lamb." Cars weren't allowed on the island of Bermuda until 1948. What's in a name? Well, a great deal, it would seem - at least according to those trying to make it big in Hollywood. Joan Crawford was born Lucille La Sueur, Roy Rogers was Leonard Slye and Dean Martin was Dino Crocetti. Issur Danielovitch (wisely) changed his name to Kirk Douglas, and Archibald Leach decided he preferred to become famous as Cary Grant. Are you a cacographer? You may not be, but if you spend any time at all online you've certainly run across a few. A cacographer is someone who can't quite grasp the rules of spelling. Nobel Prize-winning Russian author Boris Pasternak wrote the novel "Doctor Zhivago" (later famously adapted to film). When the book was first published in 1957, in Italy, it earned great acclaim. However, it was decades before Pasternak's countrymen could legally read it - the book wasn't allowed to be published in the Soviet Union until 1988.

Rutherford B. Hayes has the White House's first telephone installed, although he rarely received phone calls. In fact, the Treasury Department possessed the only other direct phone line to the White House at that time. The White House phone number was "1." On May 9, 1926, according to their claims, American polar explorer Richard E. Byrd and pilot Floyd Bennett fly over the North Pole in a triple-engine Fokker monoplane. How parents can discuss social media with their young children Parents of young children tend to have a lot on their minds. While social media may not be moms’ and dads’ foremost concern, it’s a topic that today’s parents must discuss with their children eventually. Social media is largely uncharted territory for parents. Many parents of young children did not grow up with social media. As a result, they might not know what constitutes appropriate usage, and how to convey that to kids growing up in a world where social media is so prevalent. Parents tasked with discussing social media with kids can consider the following tips. •Recognize today’s kids are the most connected people in the world. UNICEF notes that young people between the ages of 15 and 24 are the most connected people in the world. Seventy-one percent of people in that age group are online, while just 48 percent of the total population across the globe is online. Parents won’t be able to eliminate the internet or social media from their kids’ lives. So discussions about social media usage should be about responsible usage, which should include limits on how much time kids spend online each day. •Don’t view social media as a vil-

lain. While social media gets its share of deserved and undeserved criticism, UNICEF, in its “The State of the World’s Children 2017” report, noted that digital technologies can serve as positive forces in the lives of young people. For example, digital technologies allow children to access information on issues affecting their communities. Some youngsters may use that access as inspiration to change their communities for the better. In addition, social media allows young people with conditions such as cerebral palsy to interact with their peers in ways they might not have been able to interact in decades past. When discussing social media with their children, parents can emphasize these positive aspects while also noting the negatives associated with social media, using the combination of both as an example of why social media must be used in moderation. •Address the elephant in the room. Everyone on the internet is not who they say they are, and parents must address this with their kids before youngsters open social media accounts. Point out to children that they should never “friend” anyone who they do not know. A 2015 report from Pew

Research found that 41 percent of Facebook users are connected with people they have never met in person. While adults who connect with strangers may not be in danger, kids may not be mature or savvy enough to recognize cyber criminals or others looking to prey on their inexperience and trustfulness. Explain this to children and use it to illustrate why mom and dad want to know who they’re speaking to online. Emphasize that your goal is to protect them, not invade their privacy. Social media can be a difficult topic for parents to discuss with their children. Maintaining an open and honest dialogue that recognizes the pros and cons of social media can make such discussions more fruitful.

Create mosaic art using eggshells By Donna Erickson Here's how to make beautiful mosaic art from dyed eggshells: On a newspaper-covered table, sort eggshells by color. Place in zipper-style plastic bags and let your kids smash the shells lightly with their fists. Remove from bags and set in piles. Also, mix some white household glue

with a few drops of water in a small bowl. Simple Collage On a piece of heavy construction paper, paint a design with a brush dipped in the glue mixture. Sprinkle the shells on the glue design and press lightly. Your kids may want to add other art materials to the project, such as cutout felt, feathers, uncooked macaroni, sequins and glitter. If you have been on a spring nature walk, add collected small, lightweight "finds," such as tiny, smooth pebbles, pieces of twigs or pods. Add more glue solution when needed. Set the picture aside to dry before displaying. Colorful Picture Draw a picture with a marker or pencil on a piece of cardboard. The plain side of

cardboard from an empty cereal box is perfect. You may want to draw a fish, a bird, geometric shape or a team logo. Glue dark yarn around the outline of the drawing, if you wish. Let dry. Brush glue in the empty spaces. Press bits of colored eggshells, one at a time, on the glue to fill in the spaces. You also might want to add lentils, seeds or small dry beans in different colors. If the drawing is large, your child may wish to work on it in stages and come back to a different section at a later time. Set the completed mosaic aside to dry before displaying on a plate rack. Donna Erickson's award-winning series "Donna's Day" is airing on public television nationwide. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Easter egg aftermath By Angela Shelf Medearis

After the Easter baskets have been put away and the chocolate bunnies are a sticky, melted memory, the colored hardcooked eggs linger on. Remember, that although your colored eggs were attractive as the centerpiece for Easter, they are a perishable food and should have been treated that way. If the eggs were left at room temperature for more than two hours, you should not eat them. Cracked or dirty eggs should be discarded. A wise tip to remember: use plastic eggs for decorating and hunting so you can keep the real eggs safe to eat. You might be able to find plastic eggs on clearance in stores after Easter, so stock up for next year. Here some tips for storing and using hard-cooked eggs: How long can hard-cooked eggs in the shell be safely stored in the refrigerator? The eggs should be used within one week. Refrigerated fresh eggs can be kept for four to five weeks. Hard-cooked eggs don't last as long because the cooking process removes the protective coating. Why are some hard-cooked eggs easier to peel than others? Eggs that are only a few days old are more difficult to peel because of the carbon dioxide in fresh eggs. As it ages, an egg takes in air, which helps separate the membranes from the shell, making it easier to peel. Check the sell-by date on the carton of eggs. If more than 23 days remain before the sell-by date, the eggs may not peel well. What's the best way to peel a hardcooked egg? To peel a hard-cooked egg, gently tap the egg on the countertop until the shell is finely crackled all over. Start at the large end (where an air bubble often is) and

lightly pull the shell off. Once peeled, eggs should be eaten that day. How many eggs are the equivalent of a lean meat protein? One egg equals 1 ounce of lean meat, poultry or fish. This means you can use two eggs as a main dish at a meal or use eggs to help a more expensive protein food go further. For instance, you might add one chopped hard-cooked egg per serving and reduce the amount of expensive seafood in a casserole. Many of us look at the leftover hardcooked eggs and see egg salad or deviled eggs. Add some interest to these standard recipes with some diced bacon or ham, chopped green or red bell pepper, or chopped pickles. For those who might have health concerns about consuming eggs, look for ways to decrease the use of the yolks. Make an egg salad using three whites to each yolk, add plenty of diced celery or green pepper, and use low-fat or fat-free mayonnaise or salad dressings. If you're looking for a way to use up your hard-cooked eggs quickly, this recipe for Easter Egg Croquettes is "egg"-xactly the help you need!

2 tablespoons poultry seasoning 1 tablespoon garlic powder 1 1/2 teaspoons salt, plus more for sprinkling 1 1/2 teaspoons ground black pepper 1 3/4 cups panko (Japanese) breadcrumbs 3 large eggs, beaten 1 1/2 to 2 cups oil for frying

30 minutes to ensure that they won't fall apart when fried. 5. In a large, deep, heavy skillet or pot, heat oil to 375 F. Fry the croquettes in batches of 3 or 4, turning occasionally until golden brown, about 3-5 minutes. Drain the croquettes on paper towels. Sprinkle with salt. Serve immediately. Serves 4 to 6.

1. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour until smooth; cook and stir 1-2 minutes or until lightly browned. Gradually whisk in the milk; cook and stir about 1-2 minutes (mixture will be thick). Scrape the flour mixture into a bowl. 2. Stir in the eggs, green vegetable, green onions, cheese and 1 tablespoon of the poultry seasoning and 1/2 tablespoon of the garlic powder, and 1/2 teaspoon of the salt and black pepper. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 2 hours or overnight. 3. After the croquettes have chilled, shape 1/4 cup of the egg mixture into twelve oval croquettes, 3-inches long. place the breadcrumbs and beaten eggs in separate shallow bowls. Season the breadcrumbs and the eggs equally with the remaining poultry seasoning and 1/2 teaspoon each of garlic powder, salt and pepper. Mix well. 4. Roll croquette logs in the crumbs to coat, then dip them in the beaten eggs, and roll again in the crumbs, patting to help coating adhere. Chill croquettes for

Video/DVD Reviews By Amy Anderson "Escape Room" (R) - Six players accept an uninvited mental challenge with a hefty payoff: survive an enhanced escape room and win a million dollars. When the puzzles become perilous -- the first room heats up like an oven until it bursts into flames - the strangers must combine wits and learn from past experiences in order to literally escape with their lives. And the lives to be saved are diverse, from an Iraq War veteran (Deborah Ann Woll) to an introverted physics student (Taylor Russell) to a supercilious stockbroker (Jay Ellis). It's moderately suspenseful young adult horror, and although there are plot points that aren't hard to work out, I couldn't escape my own enjoyment. "Destroyer" (R) - Nicole Kidman goes deep undercover - so deep that there are times you can barely identify the actress portraying LAPD detective Erin Bell. As a young cop, Bell takes a surreptitious role in a crime gang with her partner Chris (Sebastian Stan). They end up party to a botched bank robbery, and Chris is killed by gang leader Silas (Toby Kebbell), who disappears. Years later, Silas' re-emergence is discovered when a tainted bill is left behind at a murder scene. This brings Bell out full force, tracking him down for retribution and justice, gang member to gang member, with a treacherous bloodlust and moral ambiguity to match. "The Gospel According to Andre" (PG-13) - As a boy in North Carolina, Andre Leon Talley discovered luxury in not only the issues of Vogue magazine he found in the library, but also in the smart and well-crafted clothes provided by his grandmother, a cleaning lady at Duke University. Raised in the segregated South, but never accepting its limits, he rose to a life of influence in the New York fashion world, working at the top echelons of Vogue by his mid-30s. Told

Nicole Kidman in "Destroyer" through interviews and archival footage, with a loving patina of honesty from the man himself. "Hal" (NR) - He operated in the same universe as other pantheon directors of the 1970s, a decade of groundbreaking film direction, but you don't generally hear the name Hal Ashby in a list of greats. Director Amy Scott means to change that by documenting the significant contributions of one of the most respected and rebellious editors and directors of his time. From his editing Oscar for "In the Heat of the Night" to direction of iconic, era-defining works such as "Shampoo," "Harold and Maude" and "Being There," Hal is brought into focus by an exhaustive list of actors, Hollywood filmmakers and friends. Hollywood By Tony Rizzo Tom Hanks has a couple of big roles coming up, starring as Mr. Rogers in "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood," with Wendy Makkena, Matthew Rhys and Chris Cooper (out Nov. 22), then transforming himself into Colonel Parker, the manager of "The King of Rock and Roll" Elvis Presley, for director Baz Luhrmann. Among Luhrmann's hit films are "Moulin Rouge" (2001), "Australia" (2008) and "The Great Gatsby" (2013). You knew after the $20 million lowbudget film "A Quiet Place" pulled in $340 million at the box office that there would be "A Quiet Place 2." John Krasinsky again writes, directs and stars with wife Emily Blunt, plus Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe (as their children). But it's likely the film will zero in more on other survivors, including Cillian Murphy, for a May 2020 opening. Denzel Washington will next take on the title role of a Scottish lord in William Shakespeare's "Macbeth," aided and abetted by "Three Billboards" Oscar-winning best actress Frances McDormand as Lady MacBeth. Chris Hemsworth has landed another franchise with the reboot of "Men In Black: International," co-starring Rebecca Ferguson, Liam Neeson and Emma Thompson, dropping June 14, and "Dhaka," about a mercenary hired to rescue a Bangladeshi businessman's kidnapped son. Patrick Schwarzenegger, son of Arnold, stars as the imaginary friend of a troubled college freshman in the thriller "Daniel Isn't Real," with Mary Stewart Masterson. The film screened last month at The South by Southwest Film Festival and is looking for a distributor. Patrick is now filming the sci-fi thriller "Warning," with "Magic Mike" star Alex Pettyfer. What is the right type of pet for your family? Welcoming a pet into one’s life can be a rewarding experience. Pets promote compassion and discipline in their owners, and their companionship can be incredibly rewarding. They also can be helpful tools for teaching children responsibility. Pets require commitment, patience and financial investment. Potential pet owners also need to understand just what they’re getting into when they decide to bring a pet home. Certain animals require a greater level of atten-

tion than others, and some pets might not be the right fit for all involved. After all, a pet is not a temporary playmate, but a long-term family member who will require considerable love and attention. Prospective pet owners should consider various factors to help them find the pet that suits their families. Decide if you want a young pet or prefer an older animal, each of which has its advantages and disadvantages. While puppies and kittens can be attractive, they require

extra time and care upon being welcomed into a home, and that can be rough if young children are in the home and not accustomed to pets and their unique behaviors. In such instances, an older established animal may be a better fit, especially if you can devote the time to retraining the animal to your preferences. If you already have pets, you’ll need to find one that’s compatible with your existing animals. The American Veterinary Medical Foundation says to carefully consider if you can provide the amount of attention your pet will need. Different species and breeds require various amounts of care. A ferret or hamster may be self-sufficient most of the day, while a boisterous puppy will not be. People who travel frequently or are out of the house most of the day will have to keep this in mind as well. Affordability is another factor to consider. Assess whether you have the money necessary to offer shelter, recreation, medical care, food, exercise, and socialization for this particular pet. If you cannot budget for a pet that has a lot of needs, look for one that has relatively inexpensive care requirements, like a fish. Remember that some animals can live many years, while others have a relatively short life span. Factor this into your decision as well. Once you make the commitment to the pet, it’s unfair to surrender an animal simply because you failed to recognize the time and energy required to take care of it. For more assistance choosing a pet, speak with a trusted veterinarian or animal expert about the traits of certain animals and breeds up for consideration.

Ricotta Pie Ricotta pie is a traditional Easter dessert in many Italian families. One taste, and you'll know why! 1/2 package refrigerated piecrusts, one 9-inch piecrust from 15-ounce package, at room temperature 1/2 cup milk 2 envelopes unflavored gelatin 1 package (12-ounce) milk-chocolate pieces, 2 cups 1 pint heavy or whipping cream, 2 cups 1 container (15- to 16-ounce) ricotta cheese 3/4 cup confectioners' sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1. Line 9-inch pie plate with piecrust dough as label directs for 1-crust pie; make fluted edge. Bake pie shell and cool as label directs. 2. Place cold milk in small saucepan. Sprinkle gelatin over milk; let stand 1 minute to soften gelatin slightly. Over medium heat, heat milk mixture until gelatin dissolves, stirring constantly. Set aside to cool slightly. 3. In another saucepan over low heat, heat chocolate pieces until melted and smooth, stirring occasionally; keep warm. In small bowl, with mixer at medium speed, beat 1 1/2 cups heavy or whipping cream until soft peaks form; set aside. 4. In large bowl, with mixer at low speed, beat ricotta cheese, confectioners' sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and remaining 1/2 cup heavy or whipping cream until blended; gradually beat in gelatin mixture. Increase speed to medium; beat mixture until creamy. 5. Reserve 1 cup whipped cream for top of pie. Fold remaining whipped cream into ricotta mixture. 6. Drizzle about one-fourth of melted chocolate over baked pie shell. Top with one-third of ricotta mixture. Layer chocolate and cheese mixture 2 more times. Spread reserved whipped cream over top of pie. Drizzle remaining chocolate over whipped cream in decorative pattern. Chill pie about 3 hours to set. Makes 10 servings.

In medium bowl, stir lemon peel, ricotta, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper until blended. Spread ricotta mixture evenly in prepared pie plate. Bake 1 hour or until cheese is lightly browned. Let stand 10 minutes to allow cheese to set. Slice into 12 wedges. 3. Meanwhile, in medium bowl, whisk together lemon juice, Dijon, 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper. Whisk in olive oil in slow, steady stream until blended. Stir in chopped tomatoes. 4. To serve, place 1 ricotta wedge along with some greens on each of 12 serving plates. Top greens and ricotta with tomato vinaigrette.

Combat veterans and the threat posed by PTSD Every day men and women in the military put themselves in harm’s way to protect the lives and freedoms of their fellow countrymen. These brave men and women pay a steep price for their service, spending time away from their loved ones and putting themselves at risk of long-term physical and mental injuries. Many men and women, even those who never served in the military, are aware of post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, a mental health problem that some people develop after experiencing or witnessing a life-threatening event. Combat veterans are vulnerable to PTSD, and the percentage of veterans who deal with it each day is alarming. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, as many as 20 percent of veterans who served during Operations Iraqi Freedom or Enduring Freedom have PTSD. In addition, the USDVA notes that estimates now suggest as many as 30 percent of Vietnam veterans have had PTSD in their lifetime. Though it’s not exclusive to men and women who have served in the military, PTSD has long been linked to combat veterans. In fact, the American Psychiatric Association notes that PTSD has been referred to as “shell shock” and “combat fatigue” in the past. While the APA notes that a diagnosis of PTSD requires exposure to an upsetting traumatic event, that exposure can be indirect rather than firsthand. Because some people may assume that only firsthand exposure to trauma can lead to PTSD, many may be suffering in silence. That makes it all the more important that people learn to recognize the symptoms of PTSD. According to the APA, symptoms of PTSD, which can vary in severity, fall into four categories. 1. Intrusive thoughts: Flashbacks, distressing dreams and repeated, involuntary

memories are examples of intrusive thoughts symptomatic of PTSD. The APA notes that some people with PTSD experience flashbacks so vivid that they feel they are reliving the traumatic experience or that it is unfolding before their eyes. 2. Avoiding reminders: Some people with PTSD may avoid people, places, activities, objects, or situations they feel will trigger distressing memories. Soldiers, for example, may avoid interacting with fellow combat veterans. Avoiding discussions about a traumatic event and how they feel about it is another symptom of PTSD. 3. Negative thoughts and feelings: The APA says that negative thoughts and feelings may include ongoing and distorted beliefs about oneself or others; ongoing fear, horror, anger, guilt, or shame; considerably diminished interest in activities previously enjoyed; and a sense of estrangement and detachment from others. 4. Arousal and reactive symptoms: These symptoms may include irritability and angry outbursts; reckless or selfdestructive behavior; being easily startled; or have difficulty concentrating or sleeping. PTSD poses a significant threat to the men and women who serve in the military. Additional resources about PTSD is available at www.ptsd.va.gov and www.psychiatry.org.
