Coupons can help people, and parents in particular, save substantial amounts of money. While television shows have documented the efforts of people who take coupon usage to the extreme, many shoppers simply want to earn modest savings on their grocery bills, recognizing that saving a few dollars here or there can add up to significant savings over time. But even if you have no desire to spend hours on end hunting down the best deals, there are some ways to make the best use of coupons without taking up much of your time. •Understand stores' coupon policies. Begin by researching if stores you frequent have restrictions on coupon usage. Some stores will double the value of coupons and others will not. Stores may set limits on the number of coupons one register can process or how many coupons a particular shopper can use at one time. It may be possible to use two different coupons for the same item, provided one is a manufacturer's coupon and the other is store-based. •Get organized. Using coupons effectively requires some organization. Develop a system for categorizing coupons by type or expiration date, which should ensure you don't miss out on discounts because you lost coupons of they have expired. •Subscribe to several newspapers and coupon websites. Newspapers and store circulars are still great resources for coupons, so subscribe to your local newspaper, which likely still includes inserts advertising the latest sales and coupons. You also can subscribe to coupon websites, many of which are free and deliver coupons to subscribers' email inboxes on a daily or weekly basis. •Consider a coupon-clipping service. A coupon service will clip coupons for you and send them to you for a fee. This enables you to collect coupons from various regions where coupon values may be higher than where you live. •Join a store loyalty program. Those cards supermarkets and other stores scan at

checkout do more than just track your purchases. They typically entitle members to discounts that other shoppers are not privy to. These discounts come off the bill automatically, saving you time and money. Furthermore, being part of a store loyalty program may entitle you to emails or other advertisements on special sales not open to the general public. •Learn how to stack coupons with store sales. Many blogs tell you which stores are running sales and how they compare to coupons in recent newspapers and circulars. This enables you to not only get the sale price on a particular item but also earn the coupon discount. •Get to know the standard prices of products. The only way to know if a coupon is a good deal is to be familiar with the going rate of the products you buy on a regular basis. When visiting the grocery store, make a note of how much your favorite items cost at full price. •Be prepared to stock up. Some of the best deals to be had involve buy one get one free, deals which are often referred to as "BOGO" or "B1G1." When such deals can be combined with a coupon, the savings are substantial. •Don't forget about paperless coupons. Paperless coupons, or ecoupons, are often linked to store loyalty programs. Many ecoupon services require shoppers to sign up online and provide some basic information about themselves. When you go to check out at the store, you will swipe your customer card and any available ecoupons will automatically be deducted from your purchase. •Try competitors' coupons, too. Some stores will honor coupons from their competition. If one supermarket is offering a particular BOGO deal, clip the coupon and bring it to your local store to see if they will match the discount. Although many people will not go to extremes when using coupons, when used wisely, such discounts can help save a good deal of money.

Fun facts about America's national anthem July 4, 2014 marks the 238th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Fireworks will illuminate the night sky, the rich smell of barbecue will be in the air, and the country will be awash in red, white and blue splendor. Chances are the swelling melody of "The Star Spangled Banner" will be broadcast over the radio and on various firework display telecasts. The national anthem is synonymous with the United States America, and its notes very well may be the patriotic glue that binds the country together. Although the lyrics and music of the song are widely known, many may be unfamiliar with the rich history behind the beloved tune. A poem is born America began its fight for independence from Great Britain in 1775, and the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776 to identify the 13 colonies that succeeded in winning their independence from Britain. However, the battles with Britain stretched on. Fights over territories kept disputes between the British Empire and the newly formed United States raging on, and it was during one such fight, and not during the Revolutionary War as some may think, that "The Star Spangled Banner" was written. The War of 1812 was declared by the United States to set right some of the issues that were not resolved after the Revolutionary War. Francis Scott Key was an American lawyer at the time of this war, negotiating for the release of an American hostage being held by the British. Although Key won the hostage's release, he was not able to leave the British fleet where the negotiations took place until the British completed their attack on Baltimore. Key witnessed the British fiery bombs on Ft. McHenry at Chesapeake Bay. Just before dawn on the morning of September 14, 1814, Key was said to have noticed a huge American flag still waving above Ft. McHenry in defiance to the British attack. This imagery helped inspire the words of a poem that eventually would become the national anthem. Key penned the poem on the back of a letter he held in his pocket. After the battle was over and Key was released, he completed the poem at the Indian Queen Hotel, where he was staying. The poem was titled, "Defense of Fort M'Henry." The poem was put to music to fit the popular melody "The Anacreonic Song" by English composer John Stafford Smith. Key's brotherin-law, Judge Joseph H. Nicholson, anonymously made the first printing of the lyrics to the melody, and the song was printed in two newspapers. The song quickly became popular, and soon after, Thomas Carr of the Carr Music Store in Baltimore, Maryland published the words and music under a new title, "The Star-Spangled Banner." "The Star-Spangled Banner" takes off "The Star-Spangled Banner" became one of the nation's most

beloved patriotic songs in the 19th century. According to Smithsonian, the song gained special significance during the Civil War, a time when many Americans turned to music to express their feelings for the flag and the ideals and values it represented. The military used the song for ceremonial purposes, requiring it be played at the raising and lowering of the colors. But many versions of the song were used during these ceremonies and celebrations. By the 20th century, President Woodrow Wilson wanted to establish a standard version, so he tasked the United States Bureau of Education to provide an official version. In response, the Bureau of Education enlisted the help of five musicians, including Walter Damrosch, Will Earhart, Arnold J. Gantvoort, Oscar Sonneck and John Philip Sousa, to agree on an arrangement. This new standardized version was first played on December 5, 1917, at Carnegie Hall. It wasn't until March 3, 1931, that "The Star-Spangled Banner" became the official national anthem of the United States when President Herbert Hoover signed this designation into law. This Fourth of July, people may be struck by the magnificence of the fireworks or the enjoyment of the parades. But as the music swells, they also can think about the significance of the events that inspired the creation of the country's national anthem.

July 4, a holiday since 1941 The Fourth of July has been a federal holiday since 1941. Though that may seem like a long time for the country to wait to celebrate the independence it declared in 1776, the tradition of the Fourth of July, often referred to as Independence Day, dates back to the dawn of the American Revolution and the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. Since then, July 4th has been recognized as the dawn of American independence, and celebrations that included fireworks and parades can be traced back to the 18th century. On July 4, 1777, the city of Philadelphia, which would become the first capital of the United States of America, held the first annual commemoration of American independence, and exactly one year later George Washington ordered that all of his soldiers be offered double rations of rum to commemorate the anniversary. In 1781, Massachusetts was the first state to make July 4th an official state holiday, and the day was actually declared a federalholiday by the U.S. Congress in 1870. However, that declaration did not grant a paid holiday to federal employees. That benefit came in 1941, which is why that year is now recognized as the first year when the Fourth of July officially became a federal holiday.

Strange, but true By Samantha Weaver It was Martin Luther King Jr. who made the following sage observation: "In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends." If you head up to the top floor of the U.S. Supreme Court building, you'll find a basketball court. It's known, of course, as "the highest court in the land." During the filming of the classic film "The Wizard of Oz," the dog that played Toto was paid $125 per week. In contrast, the actors who played the munchkins were paid $100 per week -- and their manager, Leo Singer, kept half of that. If you're suffering from xanthodontia, don't worry; a dentist can help whiten those yellow teeth.

On July 9, 1777, New York elects Brig. Gen. George Clinton as the first governor of the independent state of New York. Clinton's career was marked by his hatred of British loyalists, called Tories. He kept the public's tax burden low by confiscating and selling land belonging to Tories to maintain state coffers. On July 7, 1865, Mary Surratt is executed for her role as a conspirator in Abraham Lincoln's assassination. Surratt's boardinghouse, a few blocks from Ford's Theatre, where Lincoln was murdered, served as the place where a group of Confederate supporters conspired to assassinate the president. On July 8, 1898, notorious con man "Soapy" Smith is murdered in Skagway, Alaska. Smith earned his nickname "Soapy" selling bars of soap wrapped in blue tissue paper. He promised crowds that a few lucky purchasers would find a $100 bill wrapped inside the $5 bars of soap. On July 13, 1951, rivers across eastern Kansas crest well above flood stage, and 500,000 people are left homeless. Two million acres of farmlands were lost. In addition, the flooding caused fires and explosions in refinery oil tanks. Home projects perfect for the 'staycationers' The "staycation" was a concept many first acquainted themselves with when the economy started to struggle and men and women were forced to tighten their belts. In lieu of trips overseas or family trips to popular tourist destinations, many men and women opted to stay home and save their money. While the idea of a staycation makes practical sense, many found that idling away a week of hard-earned vacation at home could grow somewhat boring after a few days. But whether a staycation is a week-long escape from the office or a three-day weekend, homeowners can tackle a few projects around the house to turn their time at home into one marked by productivity instead of boredom. Add a splash of color. One of the easiest and most effective ways to give a home a new look is to repaint the home's interior. Such a project can be a smallscale undertaking focusing on one or two rooms in the house or a more ambitious exercise in which more lived-in rooms like a family room and/or kitchen are given an entirely new color scheme. When removing old paint, consider using sanding pads to make the task easier than the days or yore, when paint was often tediously scraped off of walls with a putty knife. Parents on staycation can even involve the whole family in their painting project, allowing youngsters to choose new colors for their rooms and do a little work with the paintbrush as well. Say farewell to old faucets. Faucets have a unique way of making bathrooms appear dated. But vanity faucets can quickly and easily be replaced so long as the main problem is appearance and not plumbing. Homeowners who suspect potential plumbing problems with sinks should seek a consultation with a professional before replacing vanity faucets. Once the go-ahead has been granted, homeowners can spend a weekend or a day or two during their staycation replacing vanity faucets around the home. Though the project might seem small, it can yield dramatic and aesthetically

appealing results. Consider some eco-friendly updates. Homeowners who live in older homes might be able to turn their time away from the office into an exercise in going green around their homes. Eco-friendly updates, which can include replacing old air conditioners with newer, more efficient models or replacing older toilets with more newer models designed to conserve water, may even earn homeowners tax breaks and will almost certainly lead to lower utility bills. Additional ecofriendly and easy home improvement projects that can be tackled in a day or two include replacing inefficient and wasteful water fixtures and installing a programmable thermostat that makes it easier to control heating and cooling costs and conserve energy. Stain the garage floor. Many homeowners treat their garages as a workspace, and as a result garages tend to be ignored when making cosmetic changes. Staining the garage floor can clear away any oil spots and paint stains that may have accumulated over the years, and a clean and well-maintained garage can increase a home's resale value. Staycations have grown increasingly popular over the last half decade, as many homeowners are opting to forgo costly vacations in favor of staying home to pad their nest eggs. While it's important for staycationers to squeeze in some rest and relaxation, it also can be beneficial to tackle a few projects around the house during time away from the office.

Try this handy tip The best way to get a bloodstain out of clothing is by dousing the stain with hydrogen peroxide and washing as usual. For clay stains, you absolutely must have a Fels-Naptha bar. It looks like a bar of soap, and you wet the material and rub in the soap. It's magical.

The beef master By Angela Shelf Medearis

I was watching a morning news show and saw a fascinating interview with Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher and cattle rancher Nolan Ryan about his new cookbook, "The Nolan Ryan Beef and Barbecue Cookbook: Recipes From a Texas Kitchen." Footage of Ryan with his family on one of his cattle ranches provided a different perspective of a man that many people know only from his legendary baseball career. Ryan has loved raising cattle since he was a child. He first got into the cattle business in a roundabout way. He started visiting ranches in South Texas because he was interested in deer hunting. He ended up spending a lot of time driving around looking at the cattle in the pastures and decided to go into the cattle business. Now, Ryan provides his tender Nolan Ryan All-Natural Beef to Kroger stores, suppliers and restaurants around the country. "I have high standards when it comes to steaks!" Ryan says. "After years of trying to find a consistent steak, I finally decided the only way I could guarantee beef that's good every time was to start my own brand. I gathered several ranching friends and enlisted some of the top meat scientists and beef marketing people in the world. Together, we developed a program to provide guaranteed tender, all-natural beef that would always be tender, tasty and a great value for families." I've never cooked with beef products that were even close to the quality of Ryan's All-Natural Beef. While there are many definitions of "all-natural," his beef goes beyond even the U.S. Department of Agriculture's definition of "minimally processed with no additives or preservatives." The company uses the most wholesome ingredients from cattle raised in a stress-free environment. The science says that happy cattle produce a great product. It turns out that stress is the sin-

gle biggest cause of tough steaks. Ryan and the other cattle owners who provide beef for his company treat their animals in a humane way that ensures a safe, pure and healthy product. To develop the cookbook, Ryan and his team worked with Cristobal Vazquez - executive chef at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, Texas, and Nolan's personal chef - to produce a practical and inspiring recipe collection that will allow you to prepare delicious beef. One of my favorite recipes in Ryan's cookbook is the Easy T-Bone with Soy and Pineapple Marinade. It's the perfect recipe for a holiday celebration or a casual family dinner.

Easy T-Bone with Soy and Pineapple Marinade

This recipe for marinated and grilled T-Bone steaks was a winner with my family! It showcased the full flavors and tenderness of Ryan's beef perfectly! 2/3 cup olive oil 1/3 cup red wine vinegar

4. Remove steaks from grill. Let rest for 5-10 minutes. (During grilling, juices are forced to center of the steak, so if you dig in right away, the juices will puddle on your plate. Resting gives the juices a chance to re-distribute through the meat for a juicier steak.) (Recipe courtesy of "The Nolan Ryan Beef and Barbecue Cookbook: Recipes From a Texas Kitchen" by Nolan Ryan. For more information, visit Facebook: facebook.com/realnolanryan and Twitter: nolanryan_34 or nolanryanbeef.com.)

1/4 cup pineapple juice 1/4 cup soy sauce 8 T-bone steaks, 1-inch thick 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

1. In a large glass baking dish, combine olive oil, vinegar, pineapple juice, and soy sauce. Set aside 1/4 cup of the marinade in a small bowl to use for basting. 2. Add the steaks to the dish and turn to coat well. Set aside at room temperature for 30 minutes. 3. Preheat grill to medium and lightly oil grill grates. Drain steaks and discard marinade. Season steaks with salt and pepper, and place on the grill. Cook steaks (in batches, if necessary) for 6-8 minutes per side for medium, basting with reserved marinade and turning steaks with tongs several times. Use tongs rather than a fork to juices sealed in.

7 1/2 cups water 4 slices bacon, cut into 1-inch pieces, or 4 ounces salt pork, finely chopped 2 medium onions, chopped 1/2 cup dark molasses 1/3 cup packed brown sugar, preferably dark 5 teaspoons salt 4 teaspoons dry mustard

When you have a crowd to feed at a backyard bash, try this honey-and-ginger party pleaser.

1 1/4 cups soy sauce 3/4 cup honey 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 2 tablespoons minced, peeled fresh ginger 2 garlic cloves, crushed with garlic press 3 chickens (3 pounds each), each cut into quarters

1. In small bowl, combine soy sauce, honey, lemon juice, oil, ginger and garlic until well-blended. Divide chicken and marinade among three ziptight plastic bags, turning to coat chicken. Seal bags, pressing out as much air as possible. Refrigerate overnight to marinate. 2. Next day, prepare grill. Remove chicken and discard marinade. Arrange chicken on grill over medium heat; grill until golden brown, about 5 minutes per side. Arrange chicken around perimeter of grill (where it's cooler); cover and grill until juices run clear when thickest part of chicken is pierced with tip of knife, about 25 minutes longer. Makes 12 maindish servings. To broil in oven: Marinate chicken as in Step 1. Preheat broiler. Place chicken, skin-side down, on rack in large broiling pan. (Chicken may have to be broiled in batches.) Place pan in broiler about 8 to 10 inches from heat source. Broil chicken until golden brown, about 20 minutes. Turn chicken skin side up; broil chicken, brushing occasionally with marinade, until juices run clear when thickest part of chicken is pierced with tip of knife, about 20 minutes longer. Makes 12 maindish servings.

Staging your home for a faster sale By David Uffington

If you're ready to sell your home, you have lots of competition. Staging can go a long way toward making your home stand out, resulting in a faster sale at the price you want. Before you put your home on the market, ask your real-estate agent for suggestions. Your agent can advise you about local trends and preferences -- and your competition. Incorporate as many of the agent's suggestions as you can. Give serious consideration to hiring a professional stager, despite the cost. According to a study by the Real Estate Staging Association, homes that were staged before being put up for sale spent 87 percent less time on the market. Unstaged homes stayed on the market an average 166 days. After staging, those homes received offers within an average 32 days. Homes that were staged before being marketed received their first offer within 26 days. Quicker sales were true across all price ranges. Even if you can't hire a professional stager, there are still quite a few things you can do yourself. Here are some suggestions from HGTV.com: •Declutter. Professional stagers will often remove as much as half of the furniture in a home to make it look bigger. Pay special attention to crammed closets. •If you have a junk room, give it a role as a specific space, such as a reading nook or yoga area. •Add lighting. You want 100 watts for each 50 square feet, using a variety of types of lighting. •Paint adjacent rooms, such as dining and living rooms, the same neutral color to add more visual space. Other staging websites suggest: •Take down anything personal on the walls, such as family photos and religious items. •Don't make potential purchasers wonder how much it will cost to change all your personalized wall colors or carpet. •Make the outside inviting. Mow, edge, sweep, rake and add mulch to make it more likely a potential purchaser will want to see inside. •To find a professional stager, start with www.realestatestagingassociation.com. To do your own staging, search online for ideas at HGTV's Front Door (www.frontdoor.com) and HGTV (hgtv.com), as well as Bankrate.com and Realtor.com. Visit new model homes to see how they're done. Your payoff for staging your home? A faster sale means not making those extra mortgage payments while your house languishes unsold.

BUCK DANDY UTILITY TRAILERS

Fireworks have a colorful history Independence Day celebrations are marked by many spectacles. But few can garner the "oohs and aahs" of a good fireworks display. Summer is a time of year when the resonating booms and bright spills of color that dot the night sky are quite common. Fireworks, which can be traced back thousands of years, have an interesting history. Many historians believe fireworks originated in ancient China as early as 200 B.C. It is thought that early fireworks were not the gunpowder-filled explosives of today, but something made from bamboo, a material native to China. Chunks of bamboo, a thick, fast-growing grass, may have been tossed onto a fire as fuel. The rods would blacken, but eventually explode in the fire, causing a loud, frightening noise. This noise was a result of trapped air and sap inside of the bamboo rods heating and expanding until the bamboo exploded under the pressure. The exploding bamboo was used to ward off animals, other people and evil spirits. Chinese alchemists eventually stumbled on a recipe for basic gunpowder, mixing together saltpeter (potassium nitrate, then a common kitchen seasoning), charcoal, sulfur, and other ingredients. This powder was packed inside of hollow bamboo rods to produce an even bigger bang. Soon paper tubes replaced the bamboo, and fireworks were used for more than just scaring away spirits, as they were routinely included in special celebrations and even deployed during military engagements. Fireworks may have begun in China, but they were soon being used around the world. Italians had been fascinated with fireworks ever since the explorer Marco Polo brought back firecrackers from Asia in 1292. During the Renaissance in Europe, the Italians began to develop fireworks into a true art form. Since this was a period of artistic creativity and expression, many new fireworks were created.

Fireworks can be traced back to ancient China. "Firemasters" were fireworks experts in medieval England. They worked with "green men," who wore caps of leaves to protect themselves from raining sparks from the fireworks. In 1758, the Jesuit missionary Pierre Nicolas le Cheron d'Incarville, living in Beijing, wrote to the Paris Academy of Sciences about the methods and composition of fireworks, including how to make many types of Chinese fireworks. The world remains fascinated by fireworks even now. Fireworks displays have grown more elaborate over the years, requiring the skills of pyrotechnic experts, carpenters and digital sound masters. Various powders and chemicals mixed together produce a rainbow display of colors and aerial tricks that would likely have shocked the earliest firework creators. Not forgetting its origins, China continues to produce and export more fireworks than any other country in the world. Safety experts recommend the public leave fireworks to the professionals and sit back and relax during awe-inspiring pyrotechnic displays. As the United States and Canada prepare for their respective Independence Day celebrations, flashy fireworks displays are bound to be part of the festivities.
