The expertise of Jillian and her Senior Management team is acknowledged by appointments to State government panels providing expert advice to government and government contractors on cultural heritage management; by appointment to Heritage Council advisory panels and committees; appointment as Heritage Advisor to Local Government and by the provision of guest lectures to the University of Sydney, NSW and Flinders University in South Australia; and as an Adjunct Research Fellow with Flinders University. Jillian is also a Justice of the Peace.

Dr Comber whose research centres on decolonising Aboriginal culture heritage, is a qualified mediator and arbitrator undertaking extensive Aboriginal consultation and mediation between Aboriginal communities and Local Government. She provides outstanding professional mediation, conciliation, facilitation and arbitration services to successfully resolve environmental, land management and cultural heritage disputes.
David Nutley, Maritime Archaeologist, initiated predictive modelling of Inundated First Nations’ sites in Australia in
2006 and has a specialisation on ship’s anchors and their conservation and management.Dr Agata Calabrese’s ground breaking research into cognitive neurobiological aspects of the senses, using GIS to explore experiential aspects of mortuary rituals in Early Bronze Age North Mesopotamia has led to a whole new way of reconstructing past sensorial experiences; Supriya Singh’s cultural heritage research has made her a leader in the field of cultural heritage management whilst Glenn Suey of the Kamilaroi Nation, has studied the manufacture, origin and management of ground implements from Papua New Guinea, leading to an understanding of implements bought to Australia for ceremonial or chiefly purposes. All members of the team continue their international research whilst undertaking research into Australia’s colonial origins and First Nation’s history and culture. To support the team’s pioneering international and national research the Comber Consultants’ extensive library is managed by librarian/archivist Lindsay Walker. All members of the team have exceptional field skills and have introduced new and exciting field techniques. The field team is supported by Operations Manager, Chris Jones, who ensures high level environmental management of all fieldwork.
Working within Aboriginal archaeology and cultural heritage management the company acknowledges that it has a responsibility towards the Aboriginal community to ensure that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture is represented appropriately. Towards this aim, and to reflect equity and diversity, around 50% of the firm’s staff are Aboriginal and they lead and direct the provision of cultural research and knowledge. In addition, the company provides cadetships for Aboriginal students.

In troubling times such as this, we can take to heart that we have faced challenges like coronavirus before & some of us in travel have prevailed.

How did you reach your success?
Having grown up in a small town in Punjab, North India, I always aspired to see the world beyond my town. Having travelled within the country as part of the Junior State Swimming team I soon realised that travel is one of life’s greatest teachers. It pulls you out of your comfort zone and plunges you into the unknown. It builds relationships rather than mere connections and reveals a world of culture to explore. Stepping into the Travel and tourism industry was well thought through decision for me, also it did not involve sitting in the chemistry and biology labs as was expected out of me since my family is the medical and pharmaceutical industry. I started out working with Kuoni and since then there has been no looking back. After 23 years in the industry, I ventured out to start Orange DMC in 2014 to establish ourselves as a bespoke luxury destination management company that recognizes that its focus and strength lies in people, personalization, excellence, creative & authentic travel.
Where do you see yourself as a growing company this time next year?
As a bespoke luxury travel company that endeavours to offer exciting new programs and destinations within the Indian subcontinent, our main objective is to grow the business of our existing partners for the Indian subcontinent, collaborate with them on global opportunities. Post pandemic, we have collaborated with 2 of our key partners to cross sell multiple destinations for them, as well as offering a backend support from India. We have seen a 20% growth in the business in the last 5 months, purely based on these collaborations.

I interviewed Dr Emma Solomon for our awards article.
I asked her if she could tell us about her work on health behaviour change. Here is what she told us.
What are health behaviours?
Health behaviours include eating, smoking, alcohol, and physical activity levels. Many people have personal goals around their health and want professionals with specialist skills in behaviour change to enable them to reach their goals. This is more and more common. After all, most people want to feel healthy and get into great shape!
Why do people struggle with health so much?
I asked Dr Solomon why people struggle with health behaviours.
She told me that her clients come to her with incredible determination. Unfortunately, this alone is not enough.
She explained that habits and behaviours are learned. We learn from our families,
friends and society. We are influenced, without wanting to be, by others around us. No matter what our goal, we will be pulled back to what is familiar. This is like pulling against an elastic band and being ‘snapped back’ to the starting point.
In addition to this, health interacts with stress-factors. People under stress have reduced resources to make positive health changes. This is when people seek a professional to instal some ‘hacks’ into their repertoire of change tactics. Experiencing menopause, burnout or professional or family overwhelm are all examples of when clients need an extra boost. Without this, people resort to quick fixes like sugar, caffeine, alcohol, and overworking, which totally derail health.
Weight loss
I asked Dr Solomon about her views on weight loss and the diet industry. She told me that most overweight people have tried over 20 diets. Then put the weight back on, or
more. This damages both selfesteem and health.
Dr Solomon was very clear that when diets fail it’s “not your fault”. The real problem is the diet industry. Dealing with why people eat, is the real problem. She explained “people reach for food when they are stressed or tired”. Unfortunately, the diet industry focuses all the attention on what people eat. This creates an additional stress. The more you deny yourself certain foods, the more obsessed you become about them. This has a name – the suppression effect.
The real problem therefore is helping people change why they eat. She described the joy of helping people develop the confidence that they can eat any food. Most importantly, she explained how important it is to help people regulate their own appetite and find effortless moderation. Intuitive eating and sustainable weight maintenance are the foundation for her work with clients with weight goals.

Past, Present and Future
Dr Solomon used a computer metaphor. She explained that the solution to health behaviour change is ‘unlearning’ bad habits we picked up in our childhood. This outdated ‘programming’ requires that we install a ‘software update’. Once this is done, people can behave differently much more easily.
No one is perfect
She adds that no one is perfect. She adds that everyone has stress, and everyone gets tired. Who hasn’t reached for a glass of wine after a stressful day at work? or reached for a takeaway when they were just too tired to cook? It’s when these become routine that problems start.
Mind-body connection
She told me that the mind and body cannot be separated. She explained that may health behaviours, such as eating and drinking, are the mind’s attempt to feel better. This is also known as ‘self-
medicating.’ She assured me that everyone does this to some degree because everyone gets stressed and tired. The brain loves a ‘quick fix’.
Her approach is compassionate and scientific. She explained that she takes both a holistic and scientific approach to wellness. She combines a signature blend of therapies and models with the aim of creating lasting change for her clients via neuroplasticity. She particularly enjoys the ability to transform people’s health, sleep, weight, relationships, and overall confidence using her blend of change methods. Due to the mind – body connection, there is a domino effect. This means that positive change in one area is quickly carries forward into improvements more widely.

change. Working with a psychologist to coach lasting behavioural change begins by getting clear about the future. It’s much easier to make change when you are looking forward rather than looking backwards at what has gone wrong.
The other benefit of working with a psychologist is that most people in today’s world have experienced some kind of trauma. This can be big trauma or small trauma. All trauma activates the nervous system. Self-medicating with food, alcohol, smoking or shopping are all just ways to feel better. Dr Solomon believes everyone has experienced some kind of adversity and believes that everyone is doing the best they can. That said, she is passionate to help people release from the past to enjoy great health, a body they feel comfortable in and relationships to help them shine.

This has been because I do not see them as a competition for me, but as a support of knowledge where I learn more and where I also value the things that everyone is doing. Many children come and go from other studios, and I have always proudly left the doors open for anyone who wants to try to experience dancing somewhere else. However, most of my clients have become family. Many of the students who have passed through my hands have grown up to study, and continue to visit DancingINXS after graduating, because they feel that this is their home. I am in a specific area of immigrants in South Florida. The name of the city is Doral, and it is a suburb to the west of Miami. It is a very familiar area with a very high number of schools and where families who have been in the country for a short time, or who are just arriving to live in the United States. However, it is an area with a high economic and educational level and where, socially, extracurricular activities for children are an important part of family roles.
I was born in Bogota, Colombia where I graduated with a master’s degree in Social Communication, specializing in Journalism. During all my years in Colombia, dance has always accompanied me. I trained and danced in different academies, both recreational and professional.
Dance has been my hobby my entire life and now that hobby has become my profession, my job, and my lifestyle. When I came to live in the United States in 2001, I left journalism aside and dedicated myself to expanding my knowledge of dance in different studios. Shortly after living in Miami, I was already dictating in 7 dance studios and had 16 weekly classes for all ages, specifically in Flamenco, Belly Dance and Jazz.
In 2005, the previous owner of Dancinginxs (where I was working at the time), decided to sell the business. It was then that I took the opportunity to become the new owner of the studio. Dancinginxs became more than a business to me. It became my world. Perhaps the success I have had is because dancing was never my career, but my hobby and my lifestyle. This lifestyle has made me view business in a different way, where success is assured in the long term when you do things for love rather than money.
As director of DancingINXS, I want to cover many areas that allow me to have an active presence in the community. I will focus this upcoming year in strengthening the prestige of DancingINXS and trying to lead our competitive teams to win first place in all events. My next goal is to be able to It is to begin to develop an operations manual that serves as a model for future franchises but abroad, specifically starting in Colombia. For this, it is important to strengthen the image of the school in the next year, and thus have a faster path to success.
We have also developed a non-profit organization to teach free dance classes to children with special needs. We currently teach to a group consisting of 5 mothers and their daughters.This dance program is dedicated mainly to children with Down Syndrome. It allows kids to explore movements, creativity through rhythm and music, while developing social, emotional, and physical skills. Our foundation has been active for approximately 3 year and has received multiple donations
from the government and the community. It has been a success and we look forward to continuing to grow with this program to address the needs of many families with children with Down Syndrome.
