KEVIN SANJARI

Paragon Protection Ltd is a Canadian owned and operated security company that has successfully delivered professional uniformed security personnel, investigation services and security consulting since 1976. As a family owned and operated company, Paragon is able to provide a high level of personal service and attention with the added benefit of having nearly 5,000 employees. Paragon is the fastest growing security company in Ontario with more than 700 clients across the Golden Horseshoe and Northern Ontario, providing a full spectrum of security programs across multiple business sectors. Clients include Fortune 500, Fortune 100, real estate organizations, and large property management companies. Kevin Sanjari joined Paragon in 1987 and performed every job before becoming President in 2019 thus gaining extensive knowledge of what makes Paragon so successful. As a leader, he observed it is easier to align leadership teams and employees within small companies. With Paragon’s tremendous growth, he recognized the need to create written statements to guide decision making. He therefore led the development of The Paragon Pillars representing the brand promises to their clients. Kevin explains: “The Paragon Pillars are our core values, our DNA. Kevin believes the key to Paragon’s continued success and growth is to ensure all Paragonians are aware of, committed to, and passionate about the Pillars. Successful communication programs are relentless. It is no surprise to learn that every significant meeting and every training course begins with a review of the Pillars as a way to align every Paragonian behind these commitments to customers. This past year, all Paragonians have been engaged in a “Dialogue Series” during which they explore processes that can be improved. The first sessions were focused on the Pillar: Each Person Matters. The new guard orientation can be overwhelming at times. Guard candidates new to this industry are “drinking from the fire hose” as they go through basic security training, take the license test, then receive additional training specific to Paragon. Kevin and his teams worked together to identify ways that all Paragonians could assure new guards that Paragon has unique systems and people in place to reassure and support guards to succeed on the job. The second sessions of the Dialogue Series focused on the transition and transfer of issues and information between the day operational teams and night dispatch teams. Reducing the number of communication channels and overlapping the shifts has facilitated improved communications, reduced stress, and led to faster customer response times. To leverage the Pillar: Innovation, the teams under Kevin are empowered to be creative and challenge the industry status quo. The Paragon Professional Institute (PPI) was established in 1998 to provide a holistic, compliant, and practical security training to frontline security personnel. Ove the past two decades they have evolved through best practices and consulting with security subject matter experts and have developed over 100 training and certification programs for frontline security professionals. The team at PPI has delivered over 3.1 million courses in multiple learning platforms which consist of in classroom training, instructor led virtual training, and self-paced online training. Furthermore, the PPI team in collaboration with industry professionals and in partnership with major world class Universities have launched a new professional designation programs. The three-tiered certification program is designed to provide a competitive edge in the security market and is tailored to suit every level of experience. David Reid is the Chief Executive of Birtenshaw, a company that provides a unique range of services for children and young adults with special educational needs and disability. Birtenshaw operates as a social enterprise – while they are a profit-making organisation, the majority of their profit is reinvested for growth. Although the organisation was founded in 1956, it was technically bankrupt when David became CEO in 2006. When he took over, it had a maximum of 6 months left of life. If he had not made difficult decisions to restructure the business, changing contracts and the way that they sold their services the company would have folded. After six years of hard work, the business started to turn around and since 2012 has seen growth of circa 400%

I am absolutely delighted about a number of things that our company has achieved, and the difference we have made in the lives of so many young people. I am delighted to be the person in a privileged position where I am able to employ so many incredible people, who can in turn help hundreds of children with special education needs and disability. I am happiest about the recent opening of a brand-new special needs school in Liverpool which is a partnership arrangement with the City of Liverpool Council: the only partnership of this type in the UK.

Although the school is at the start of its second year it has reached targets predicated for year 5. We’re pleased to be able to support so many families across the Liverpool City Region, however this also demonstrates how great the need is for our services. We plan further developments across Merseyside in the near future. A significant number of staff across the organisation have won various awards, such as education staff, care and support staff. All have taken on the task of contributing to the success of the company and, as a result, have been rewarded for their work, some of which has been on a national level. It’s wonderful that they have got this level of recognition for their dedication and hard work.

We often see clients coming for one specific project or need, thinking that it is not worth linking it to other communication and marketing actions. To reach a specific goal, we do have to coordinate all actions to make sure that the communication remains coherent and consistent. In Switzerland, most people (not only

clients!) have the misconception that PR means media relations only. Media relations are a great communication tool that should be incorporated in a wider strategy. We are based in Switzerland, which is a great example as this market is divided in 3 main national languages, 3 different cultures and way of proceeding! Even within the same linguistic region, the processes are not the same so you really have to adapt yourself all the time. How is Simon&Co able to draw upon its international presence and experience of working with a global client base in order to ensure the correct approach? I worked previously for an international network of agencies, coordinating campaigns in various countries. One of the most important project I had at this time was a launch in 35 markets. We have built a solid expertise worldwide and we have trustful partners to support us worldwide. We launched a campaign for an international client at the beginning of the pandemic, and we were glad to be able to count with people with the same ethic and capacity of understanding and adapting the strategies to the context and the coming trends. Can you talk us through some of your biggest achievements so far? Our biggest achievements can be seen when we accompany a start-up in the beginning and see a few years after that they are still doing well, when we manage a crisis and find a positive

solution for all parties or when we find a strategic way to communicate that functions for companies that couldn’t get good results in the past. There are so many achievements every year. What projects are you currently working on? We have very diverse clients, active in the luxury, lifestyle, technology, gastronomy or healthcare field for instance. Our current main projects involve reputation management plans, launches, communication of influence, public affairs, media relations, business development, etc. As you can see, we are never bored! We also implemented a 24/7 permanence to support companies and answer their questions during the covid-19 crisis and published some videos to support them with insights, best practices and recommendations. This period was quite intense as I have built a solid expertise in crisis management: I worked for the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health during the H1N1 crisis and have managed one of the largest redundancies Switzerland has ever experienced. What impact has COVID-19 had on the way businesses are approaching their PR and communications? This was quite brutal but positive in a way. They had to rethink the way they communicate, finding new strategies to still remain visible in the public

space. I also think that they fostered core values such as empathy and solidarity. As an expert, I could feel right away if the messages were defined before the crisis or not. There was some bad examples of communication strategies that would have worked before the lockdown period but were not appropriate after that time anymore. What trends or new developments do you expect to see in the coming year? Media relations are getting more and more tricky as media are really struggling and have changed the way they work. They ask for more exclusive content and the topic of the coronavirus has been the main one since March. But I always say that each crisis is a source of opportunity. We just have to be more flexible and proactive. Second of all, we are expecting less budget for marketing and communication activities as some companies have to reduce their costs. This trend is not new but will certainly increase in the following months and will be a challenge for all business owners. From a communication consultant perspective, this means that I will focus more on providing tools and coaching to our clients. We support companies to make the most of their own resources.
