DESCRIPTIONANDOPERATION

EXHAUSTGASRECIRCULATIONSYSTEM (EGR)

OntheTIER3version,theexhaustcamprofilehas beenmodifiedtopermitpartialopeningoftherelated valveduringtheinletphase(exhaustgasrecirculationEGR)withtheconsequentre--introductionof someoftheexhaustgasesintotheenginecylinders.

Theexhaustgasescanbepartiallyredirectedinto thecylindersinordertoreducethemaximum combustiontemperaturevalueswhichareresponsiblefortheproductionofnitrogenoxide(NOx).

Theexhaustgasrecirculationsystem(EGR), reducingthetemperatureofcombustionby decreasingtheconcentrationofoxygeninthe combustionchamber,isthereforeaneffective systemtocontrolemissionsofNOx.

TheinternalEGRsystemisnotprovidedwithany electronicallycontrolledelements:thesystemis alwayson.

Itsconfigurationneedsnoadditionalelementssuch ascontrolvalves,pipesorheatexchangers.

Theexhaustcam(B)inadditiontothemainlobehas anotherlobe(seesect.A--A,fig.5)withrespecttothe configurationwithoutEGR.

Theadditionallobe, duringtheinletphaseofthe cylinderunderexamination, permitsbrieflyopening theexhaustvalvegeneratingrecirculationduetothe exhaustgasesreturningcausedbythelower pressurecreatedintheinletphaseinsidethe cylinder.
