Troy Newman

AREAS OF FOCUS

Troy is the founder of Highland Peak Wealth and has more than 25 years of experience in the financial services industry. His area of expertise is using strategic design to optimize client portfolios based around their growth and income needs. Troy’s high-net worth client base primarily consists of business owners, corporate executives and multi-generational families.

BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE

For 10 years prior to founding Highland Peak, Troy was a senior director for BNY Mellon Wealth Management, where he managed a team with $4.5 billion in assets under management. He also directly managed client relationships with $750 million in assets under management. Prior to joining BNY Mellon, Troy was a vice president at Strategic Financial Partners, where he managed the investment department and controlled strategic asset allocation for over $750 million in client assets. Before that, he held management positions with Kessler Financial Services, Blackstone Capital Management and Thomson Financial.

GETTING TO KNOW HIM

Troy earned his bachelor’s degree from the California State University, Sacramento and his MBA from Babson College. Troy is an active board member for Summer Search, is involved with the Boston Estate Planning Council and has been a guest speaker on Money Matters Radio and at Babson College.

Kyle McBurney,

AREAS OF FOCUS

Kyle is a managing partner and portfolio manager at Highland Peak Wealth. He specializes in working with individuals and families to implement and manage customized investment strategies in an uncertain world. He works closely with clients to understand their goals and objectives, manage their investments and integrate their investment strategy within a complete wealth management plan.

BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE

Prior to Highland Peak, Kyle worked as a vice president and senior portfolio manager at BNY Mellon. He worked directly with high-net worth clients, foundations and ultra-net-worth family offices. At the time of his departure, he was managing more than $700 million in client assets. Before BNY Mellon, Kyle was a financial advisor at Barclays Private Wealth and Morgan Stanley. During his tenure at Morgan Stanley, Kyle was a top performer and earned the prestigious Pacesetter Award.

Kyle earned his bachelor’s degree from Kenyon College, graduating with distinction in history and political science. While at Kenyon, he was a member of the varsity basketball and golf teams. He is an active member of the Norfolk and Plymouth Business Planning Council and President of the Board for the Neponset River Watershed Association. Kyle and his wife, Heather, live in Dover, Massachusetts, with their two little boys, Teddy and Cooper.

As a wealth director, Santo plays a crucial role in helping high-net-worth investors manage their wealth and achieve their goals. He provides tailored financial advice to address the unique needs and challenges faced by highly paid executives, founders, generational wealth trustees and beneficiaries during significant liquidity or life events.

BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE

Santo is a seasoned financial professional with expertise in banking, wealth management and real estate. His experience includes management, advisory and business development roles, making him a versatile and reliable resource in the finance industry. Driven by his dynamic international background, Santo speaks English, Italian, Spanish and French. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from Salem State University and currently holds the following licenses and designations: CIMA® - Certified Investment Management Analyst, FINRA Series 7 and 66, Massachusetts Life, Health & Accident Insurance, Massachusetts Real Estate Agent.

GETTING TO KNOW HIM

In his free time, Santo enjoys active and cultural pursuits. He also enjoys exploring new destinations, whether by skiing down snowy slopes, biking through rugged trails, or hiking up a mountain. Growing up in Italy, Santo deeply appreciates art, culture and culinary delights. Santo lives in Revere, Massachusetts, just north of Boston, with his wife, Camilla, and their kitten, Kora.

Erin is a relationship-focused leader with experience in customer service, administration and operations. She works to ensure excellent and proactive customer service, maintain records, produce business intelligence reports, and foster a culture of teamwork, innovation and continuous improvement.

BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE

Erin earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wells College, where she majored in economics with a minor in French. She earned her MBA from Whitman School of Business at Syracuse University.

GETTING TO KNOW HIM

Erin is from a small town in northern New York, where she learned to appreciate the outdoors and hard work. In honor of her late grandmother, Erin participates in the Boston Cares organization and has knit dozens of hats, scarves and mittens for children in Boston.

Case study: Easing a multi-generational wealth transfer

Challenges and objectives

Steve, a widower in his early 60s, has two adult children. His family has inherited significant wealth from previous generations, within multiple trusts. The family trusts were concentrated in small baskets of highly appreciated stocks that had been unmanaged for decades, creating several issues:

The portfolio severely lacked diversification, creating performance issues.

Income was not being dispersed to beneficiaries in an efficient manner.

Adding to complexity, a difficult co-trustee contributed to indecision and mismanagement.

• Develop greater diversification of uncorrelated investments across private alternatives.

• Set up family meetings to prepare the next generation for their wealth.

Actions and results

• Estate Design & Strategy: Led discussions with tax and estate advisors to establish Delaware Trusts, moving over $100 million of wealth outside of their taxable estate while still maintaining access, if necessary, through Spousal Limited Access Trusts.

• Tax Efficiency: Diversified away from two concentrated mutual funds, creating individual equity ownership with a tax managed solution that helped the family reduce their tax bill by $2.7 million.

• Strategic Lending: Leveraged portfolio to borrow $13 million to pay income taxes and capped interest costs at 1.5%. The assets that stayed invested doubled over time, paying for the income tax on the sale of the privately held business.

• Private Market Exposure: Developed a broad diversification across private alternatives, giving the client access to private equity, venture capital, private credit, private real estate, energy and distressed assets.
