About the Rollin to the Polls Voting Initiative

Nonvoters are disproportionately lower-income citizens. This is a shame, because decisions being made in Montgomery and beyond have a big impact on their abilities to have an improved quality of life. Research shows that candidates are more responsive to communities that have the most active voters.

In 2016, the Montgomery (AL) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., began expanding its organizing efforts with a call to action to fellow organizations and churches. By implementing the Rollin to the Polls (RTTP) Voting Initiative, we created goals to push GOTV efforts by increasing community engagement through voter registration, voting rights restoration, voter education, and mobilization. Our impact is maximized if candidates and politicians are hearing the communities we serve.

About the Moderator Tiffany Johnson Cole is an Attorney

with the Law Offices of Robert Simms Thompson, PC in Tuskegee, Alabama. She handles cases in the areas of automobile products liability, negligence, wrongful death, trucking litigation, fraud, and breach of contract. Tiffany made history when she became the first woman to be appointed as Municipal Court Judge in the City of Tuskegee and the Town of Jackson’s Gap, Alabama.

Tiffany received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Spelman College and her Juris Doctorate from Cumberland School of Law at Samford University. She is licensed to practice law in Alabama and Georgia.

Tiffany recognizes that too whom much is given much is required and therefore spends a great deal of time in service to others. She is a member of the North Florida Child Development Center Board, a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and the immediate president of the Tuskegee Chapter of The Links, Incorporated. She is a member of the Alabama State Bar Association, Alabama Association for Justice, Macon County Bar Association, and the Alabama Lawyers Association. Tiffany was recognized as one of the most influential persons in Macon County.

Mayoral Candidate Artur Davis Former congressman Artur Davis would be the first elected Mayor of Montgomery who was born and raised in the city and who graduated from Montgomery public schools. Davis’ Montgomery education launched him to a career as an award winning student at Harvard College and Law School; a near 100% trial success rate as a federal prosecutor; and a seat in the US House of Representatives at age 35. As a congressman, Davis led efforts to pass laws that established a federally backed cord blood bank to treat ailments like sickle cell anemia; re-opened federal federal courts to black farmers who had tried for decades to pursue discrimination claims against government farm lending agencies; and saved the federal program to rebuild public housing communities. As a six month freshman, Davis led the successful effort to stop funding cuts to black land grant colleges like Tuskegee University and Alabama A&M. Since leaving Congress, Davis has served as a public policy consultant on issues ranging from criminal justice reform to eliminating unfair barriers to professional licenses. As executive director of the state of Alabama’s civil legal aid program, Davis launched an initiative to assist ex offenders with restoring their voting rights.

Mayoral Candidate Ronald L. Davis Ronald L. Davis is a native of Montgomery and a product of the

Montgomery school system. He graduated from Alabama State University with a BS in accounting(including governmental accounting) and had an opportunity to be an employee of the City of Montgomery Finance Department. Mr. Davis can relate to the nuts and bolts of the aspects of City budget accounting which is paramount in understanding the City operation.

Ronald L. Davis attended Southern Theological Seminary where he earned a Masters in Theology. Also, he studied at Emory University doctoral studies in racial reconciliation. His education and experience have prepared him to serve as Mayor.

Mayoral Candidate Elton Dean Elton N. Dean, Sr., was first elected to the Montgomery County

Commission in November 2000, and was re-elected by his constituents in 2004, 2008, 2012, and again in 2016. He was elected Vice Chairman at the Commission’s organizational meeting in November 2004 and was named Chairman in March 2009. Elton continues to serve as Chairman of the Montgomery County Commission and is looking forward to taking the skills and experience he has as Chairman of the Montgomery County Commission to the Office of Mayor of the City of Montgomery.

SUPPORTED PUBLIC EDUCATION by providing more than $26 million to the Montgomery Public School system and the Pike Road School System in the last fiscal years. Furthermore, under Elton’s leadership, the Commission provided $3.5 million toward MPS debt reduction. Since 2001, the Montgomery County Commission has provided more than $428 million for public education in our county.

BROUGHT GOVERNMENT BACK TO THE PEOPLE by establishing “On the Road” commission meetings to be held in each commission district. Under this program, commission meetings are held in each district in the county in order to make it easier for constituents to meet with their commissioners and to have their concerns heard.

Elton was married to the late Lillie Hardy Dean. They have three children, Dawneese Bowen, Elton “Deno” Dean, Jr., and Brandon Dean. He is the son of the late Mary Dean Johnson and Dr. William Johnson.

Mayoral Candidate Victorrus Felder Victorrus Felder is a dedicated public servant and leader.

As a Correctional Officer, he has worked in the trenches with fellow officers securing individuals, which allowed him to understand the importance of improving public safety. Victorrus experience in law enforcement has fueled innovative ideas that will assist in bringing about new practices that would modernize public safety to serve the community better.

Victorrus was awarded Alabama Department of Corrections Employee of the Year for the Central Region in 2014. He was also awarded two Officer of the Quarter at his facility. He served on the CERT Team for seven years, which required him and the team to quell violence in correctional facilities. Victorrus service record as a Correctional Officer inspired him to invest his time in Montgomery to help all communities in the city to feel safe and to focus on creating a platform that would modernize the city.

Victorrus has invested in his community by becoming a volunteer coach at Bellingrath Middle School to help empower young people through teamwork and teaching the importance of having a physically active lifestyle to promote good health. Victorrus has also participated in several rallies throughout the city in support of progressing Montgomery forward.

When it counts, Victorrus Felder has the passion and proactive approach to resolve issues to lead Montgomery in becoming a model city of growth and economic development. Victorrus is willing to work with anyone to see Montgomery become one of the best cities in the United States.

Victorrus Felder was born and raised in Montgomery. He earned his high school diploma from George Washington Carver Sr. High School. He attended Miles College, and after college, he began a career as a correctional officer. Victorrus Felder and his fiancĂŠe, Juanita, are raising two daughters.

Mayoral Candidate Shannon Ferrari Shannon Ferrari was born in Montgomery, Alabama in 1974.

Her parents built their first home in Highland Gardens in the early 70’s, and then in 1983 they moved to Lakeview Heights. She attended Highland Gardens Elementary, Flowers Elementary, Goodwyn Junior High, and finally graduated from Jefferson Davis High in 1992. She bought her first home in Forest Hills over 17 years ago not far from where she grew up, and still lives there. She’s a Christian and single parent of three grown children ages 18, 22 and 25, who also attended Montgomery Public Schools.

Shannon’s career began in the early 90’s as a high school student. She began working at the age of 17 for the Alabama Commission on Higher Education (ACHE) while still in high school as a Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) student. And was acknowledged as being the youngest employee ever employed by the State of Alabama when they hired her on full-time after graduation. Soon thereafter, she worked for ACHE directly under the Executive Director, the Public Relations Manager and Governor Kay Ivey. At that time Governor Ivey was the Governmental Relations Manager for ACHE. Eventually running her own business so that she could stay home with her young boys. Throughout her life, she’s worked two, sometimes three jobs to make ends meet. Other past employers include: Aronov Realty Management, Franklin Resources Group and South University.

Although Shannon hasn’t attained her degree in Criminal Justice yet, she’s completed the following courses in addition to the core classes at South University: Criminal Courts and Corrections, Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement, Criminal Law, and the Juvenile Justice System. She’s always been a community leader, remaining active in the Forest Hills Neighborhood Association in various positions through the years as the Recording Secretary, Vice President or Director. While raising her three children she was always active in the PTA as well, and has always been an advocate for crime and safety awareness in her community.

Currently, Shannon is an Ambassador with the Montgomery area Chamber of Commerce, supporting new business and economic development, attending multiple ribbon cuttings each month. And has been recognized as an Outstanding Ambassador twice this year already. She’s also employed full-time for a property management company as an Assistant Property Manager, primarily in charge of the finances of the business. She’s also responsible for assisting the Property Manager in maintaining their local community consisting of 337 apartments.

Many though are familiar with her Facebook City Watch groups that she created in 2013. The most popular, City Watch Uncut - Montgomery, was created in January 2017 to bring more awareness to the crime in Montgomery that mainstream media was not reporting on. It now has over 59,000 active members. Her groups help keep families more informed of their surroundings and safe, and are responsible for helping members locate their stolen property and spread the word about missing family and pets.

Platform: As Mayor of Montgomery, I will make it my priority to reduce and prevent the crime that has been ailing our community, while also being an advocate for education reform. It’s also my passion to continue to support local businesses and welcome new business and growth to our beautiful city. To sustain our current economic growth though, we have to get our crime under control.

Mayoral Candidate J.C. Love, III

J.C. Love, III, was born and raised in Montgomery, Alabama.

He is the youngest child and only son of J C and Voncile Love. He is a graduate of Tuskegee University and worked at Gayfers and Dillards department stores until he retired in 2012. He is a member of the Montgomery Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. J C is a product of the Montgomery Public Schools. He attended Brewbaker Intermediate School, Baldwin Junior High School and Jefferson Davis High School. J C attended college at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. While at Morehouse, he became heavily involved in student government having served as Student Government Vice President, Student Government President, and as a member of the Board of Trustees.

J C attended law school at Boston College Law School. While at Boston College, he interned with the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office’s Public Protection Bureau and participated in the law school’s Civil Litigation Clinic where he successfully defended a family against from being illegally evicted by their landlord and helped individuals obtain much needed social security benefits.

After law school, J C returned to Atlanta, Georgia and passed the Georgia bar. He practiced with a small law firm in Decatur, Georgia where he represented individuals in criminal, family and civil matters. J C also became heavily involved in Atlanta city government.

In 2010, the Atlanta City Council appointed J C as its representative to the board of Invest Atlanta, which is the economic development entity for the city of Atlanta. During his tenure on the Invest Atlanta board he participated in programs that facilitated the creation of more than 23,000 jobs and nearly $2 billion in investment for the City of Atlanta.

J C is currently employed with the law firm of Rushton, Stakely, Johnston & Garrett, P.A. in Montgomery which is one of the oldest law firms in the city. He currently serves as the President of the Capital City Bar Association, which is the bar association for African American attorneys in Montgomery; President, of the Mt. Zion A.M.E. Zion Foundation Board and President of the Montgomery - Tuskegee Chapter of the Morehouse National Alumni Association. J C is a board member of the Montgomery County Volunteer Lawyers Foundation, the Britton YMCA, and a former member of the Capri Theater Foundation.

J C is married to Dr. Porcia Bradford Love. They have three children: Caroline Elizabeth, age 3; Catherine Grace, age 2 and James Christopher, age 1.

Platform: Crime- JC plans on creating a less violent community by reinvesting in Montgomery’s youth. JC wants to provide youth a safe place to go and plans on accomplishing this by re-opening community centers and investing more money in after-school programs. Education- JC wants to work together with the community to rebuild the Montgomery education system. He believes that Montgomery should build its education system on the mantra “excellence and not excuses”. The Economy- JC plans on promoting smart growth policies that will lead to economic growth and new job creation.

Mayoral Candidate Steven L. Reed

Steven L. Reed is an accomplished public servant and leader. As

Probate Judge, he’s expanded access to representation, improved facilities, and modernized the office to better serve the community.

His contribution toward the creation of the Alabama Healthy Minds Network has helped hundreds of people get the treatment and services they need instead of spending time in jail. He has made drastic improvements to mental health services and has resolved issues in his administration.

In addition, Steven correctly stood up for the rule of law in our legal challenge to former Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore over marriage equality.

Steven has also worked across the aisle with former Sec. of State Jim Bennett when he initiated a statewide voter PR campaign centered on educating the public about new Voter ID laws. In addition, Steven was named to the Department of Homeland Security’s Election Integrity Commission.

Steven has invested himself in his hometown. An alumnus of Leadership Alabama, he also serves on the boards of the River Region United Way and Britton YMCA. He is a volunteer YMCA football coach and a member of the Metro Board of the Montgomery Area YMCA. Steven is the Moderator at Community Congregational United Church of Christ as well as an active member in Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Steven has received the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Dr. Martin Luther King Leadership Award for Governmental Service, and was chosen as a New Deal Leader. He was also invited to the Aspen Institute Justice and Society Seminar and traveled to Israel at the invitation of the American Israel Education Foundation.

When it counts, Steven Reed has been there for Montgomery. As Probate Judge, he delivered over a million dollars worth of new voting machines and expanded the office’s efforts to increase voter participation. When conservatives tried to deny equal access of our government to some of our citizens, Reed went all the way to the Supreme Court to fight them.

Steven Reed was born and raised in Montgomery. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree, cum laude, from Morehouse College where he also lettered in football. He holds a Master of Business Administration from Vanderbilt University’s Owen Graduate School of Management. Steven and his wife Tamika are the proud parents of three children.

Platform: Steven has a vision that hopes to provide inclusive opportunity for all Montgomerians regardless of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, socioeconomic status, or neighborhood. businessman Charles Woods and wife Miriam, the 7th of 9 kids. He attended the University of Alabama and after college worked for his dad’s television business in California, Texas, and Louisiana. David left his father’s company in 1985 and invested in Montgomery by purchasing WCOV-TV. WCOV later became one of the first affiliates of the Fox Network. David turned around a struggling independent station and grew it into a top producing Fox affiliate. Now, Woods Communications owns 3 television stations serving Montgomery and surrounding areas, because David believes in our town and is invested in its future David was instrumental in the development of the Amber Alert Program for the state of Alabama during his time as President of the Alabama Broadcasters Association.

David assists law enforcement officials in their efforts to protect our community and keep criminals off the street, which has led to numerous awards. He was awarded the City of Montgomery Citizen Service Medal by the Chief of Police for his support of the Montgomery Police Department.

Montgomery’sDistrict Attorney awarded David for his support of Crime Victims Rights. The Governor and Attorney General recognized David for his efforts in supporting public safety officers.

David has a passion to help people here and abroad having gone on several church mission trips visiting Ecuador, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Honduras, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Kenya, India and most recently Poland. Doing volunteer work is something that energizes David, and he feels spending time with those in need makes a lasting impact. David currently serves on the board of directors for the Montgomery YMCA and River Region United Way. David is married to his wonderful wife Donna. Together they have 3 children: David, Drew (Jodi), and Dana (AJ), and 3 grandchildren – Grace, Walter and Everest. David and Donna are active in St. James Methodist Church where David served on the board for seven years. David led a small group for 8 years and previously volunteered as a Youth Sunday School teacher.

Platform: Montgomery is a great city, yet we also have great challenges. If elected, I plan to create jobs, fix crime, fix our schools, and formulate a right-size government.
