A er 40 years of breathtaking change, the Sultanate of Oman is nowadays one of the most developed countries in the Arab world. Infrastructural changes will however always be faster than cultural ones, leading to some not always easy changes within families, communities and society as a whole. Such changes will eventually have a great impact on architecture and urban planning.
e project rethink Mutrah focuses on the old harbour area of the capital. Mutrah is one of the few areas in Muscat with a dense, traditional urban fabric. Apart from the sociocultural changes looming above that area of the city, the thesis aims to answer the question of how to prepare such an area for the ever increasing number of tourists pouring into the souq from the cruise ships.
