PREDICTABLE GENETICS PROVEN PERFORMANCE 55 Bulls & 25 Open Heifers Sell March 7, 2020, Pawnee Rock, KS

Fellow Cattlemen, Thank you for taking time from your busy schedule to pick up our catalog and take a look at the offering. To those of you that are already customers of LF, let me say thank you again for partnering in our genetics. With that being said, I am saying to myself where has a decade gone since I wrote my first one of these sale introductions. I flipped through our first catalog for a bit of perspective. Performance data points were a little fewer than now and there were some good individuals by today’s perspective. As a rule, there are very few of those bulls that could make the cut now. I would say that a drive for genetic excellence and taking the risk out of the cattle will push you to make better breeding decisions and use all the tools at your disposal to continually push the offering to new heights. I think as you pick this catalog up and take a look, you will have to agree, this set of bulls and females moves the bar to a far superior level. As I assembled the sale information, I was reminded of the fact that the number of bulls and females with traits in the very top of the breed have never been higher. When that fact is combined with a larger number of bulls and a larger diversity of genetics, it is overwhelming the strides we have gone to make cattle that will fit into every potential scenario that is put before them. The Growsafe information continues to pinpoint those individuals that achieve excellence in lowering feed costs. You can be sure that the results of the excellence in these traits will be put to work in our program to propagate the genetics that continue to make LF the leader in low input, high output genetics. I think the potential for the outlier sires in this offering to make an impact for the new owners is huge, but their impact on the industry is even greater. We want to work with their new owners of these outstanding individuals to use the genetics in our herd and also to help market these genetics to the industry. The increased emphasis on performance traits continues at Loving Farms, but we have made a commitment to not sacrifice calving ease, carcass quality, or eye appeal to get there. Rest assured, the focus remains on producing a product that is balanced in traits and is not bred for extremes. Many have asked how we handle our cows and we are an open book about that. The are maintained on western Kansas short grass in the summer and rye pasture and winter grass in the winter in a least cost environment that still has enough resources for the offspring to genetically express themselves. Once again, all the bulls will sell with GGP50K testing that provides genomically enhanced EPDs (GE EPDs) as well as pedigree verification accuracy. GE EPDs have the equivalent accuracy of 12 calves weighed, measured, and built into their numbers. This is comparable to their first calf crop already being figured in. This greatly enhances the relationship between the numbers on paper and their actual performance. One of the most overlooked parts of program is the feeder calf buy back program. This is detailed better towards the back of the catalog. Please get in touch with one of the LF team to visit about these opportunities. They are here for you to use and better your marketing program and also to help us build our genetic database. We are more that happy to detail the options and how to meet the qualifications for this and to ultimately return more dollars to your operation. Finally, we hope that you can be with us on March 7th, but if you can’t we have several options available. Please visit DVAuction.com, as they will be streaming the sale live with bidding online. Please register 24 hours in advance for online bidding. Also, all of the numbers listed on the adjacent page are here for you use, please feel free to call any of the Loving family or the numbers listed for bidding or just a honest evaluation of the cattle. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the confidence in our program and genetics.

Trait Indicators

Look for these trait indicators next to each animal.

Calving Ease Expert

Individuals that are strong on actual performance and EPDs for birthweight and calving ease.

Efficiency Experts Performance Experts Premium Experts Individuals that lead their contemporary groups in feed efficency.

High growth individuals Individuals that excel having an advantage on on premium based performance indicator EPDs carcass traits and $F. and actual performance.

Overview of EPDs

Carcass Weight (CW): expressed in pounds as a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Calving Ease Direct (CED): The most important EPD in sire selection for use on heifers. This value is expressed as a percent of unassisted births; the more positive a number is the more desirable.

Ribeye Area (REA): REA measures the difference in ribeye area of a bull’s progeny. REA is measured in square inches. A higher REA EPD is indicative of expected larger ribeyes.

Calving Ease Maternal (CEM): Reflects a bull’s ability to sire daughters who calve unassisted. The value is expressed as a percentage of unassisted births, with a more positive number being more desirable. Birth Weight (BW): An indicator of birth weight and calving ease. Larger BW EPDs typically, but not always indicate more calving difficulty. Weaning Weight (WW): Weaning weight measures the differences in weight of calves at weaning, and is also reported in pounds. A higher WW EPD indicates an expected higher weaning weight. Yearling Weight (YW): Like other weight traits, YW measure the differences in weight of animals at yearling, and is also expressed in pounds. Higher YW EPDs indicate a higher expected yearling weight. Milk (MK): the expected differences in a bull’s daughters’ calves at weaning weight due to their milking ability. Milk is looking at how well daughters milk and how that translates to the weaning weights of their calves. A higher MK EPD indicates a higher weaning weight due to the bull’s daughters’ milking ability. Total Maternal (TM): TM predicts the total difference in weight of a bull’s daughters’ calves at weaning. A portion of this difference in weight comes from the milking ability of the bull’s daughters (MK EPD), and a portion comes from the genes for growth passed from the bull to his daughters and then on to their calves. The TM EPD is calculated by taking ½ of a bull’s WW EPD + his MK EPD. Stayability (ST): The newest addition to the Shorthorn EPD lineup, Stayability is a measure of the percentage of a bull’s daughters that will still be in the herd at six years old. Like CED and CEM, Stayability is expressed as a percentage. A higher ST EPD indicates a higher percentage of daughters staying in the herd. 1. ASA Registration Number 2. Date of Birth 3. Percentage Shorthorn 4. Color 5. PACER Performance/Pacesetter 6. Top 25% of Breed Indicator 7. Trait Indicator (Key on page 2) 8. Ultrasound Data 9. GrowSafe Feed Efficiency Data

1

Backfat (FT): Fat thickness measures the amount of back fat on a carcass. FT is reported in inches. A lower FT EPD indicates a bull whose progeny will have less fat on the carcass than a bull with a higher FT EPD. Marbling Score (MB): evaluation of intramuscular fat deposition in the ribeye as expressed in USDA numeric marbling scores. Higher values indicate genetics that are expected to marble and have a higher quality grade. Calving Ease Direct ($CEZ): This index assumes a bull will only be mated to heifers, not cows. The potential profitability of the sire is measured by the incidence of live calves at birth. Moderate mature size is also emphasized in the index, but performance is not a priority. British Maternal Index ($BMI): This multi-trait selection index attempts to measure a bull’s potential profitability when complimenting the British cow base (Angus, Red Angus, Hereford, etc.). Shorthorn females can likewise be gauged at adding value to British or British composite bulls of other breeds. A balance of growth and carcass traits is desired with a strong maternal component aimed at optimum reproductive efficiency and cow longevity. Feedlot ($F): $Feedlot places strong emphasis on growth and carcass traits. This multi-trait index assumes the sire will be mated to a mix of heifers and cows and attempts to measure profitability when progeny are sold on the fed market. On the female side, mature size should be monitored closely when selecting for $F.

It is only appropriate to start off our 10th sale with a bull that has been decades in the making. It is nearly impossible to find a chink in the armor of this future sire as there is no box left unchecked. Answer 8742 is absolutely unparalleled in his combination of superior phenotype and superb array of performance figures. He not only leads a powerful contemporary group, but is a breed leader in nearly every measurable category and has big time feed efficiency numbers. Take note, this is a sire that will change the breed if not the industry.

The second in a powerful line of Answer sons that will prove to the industry what a powerhouse sire group the Answers are. 8751 reads in the top 20% of the breed for CE and BW EPDS and growth EPDs. He ranks in the top 1% for Marbling and is one of the top feed to gain conversion and RFI bulls.

We have not blended a better package of calving ease genetics and power than what this Optimus son possesses. He has been the crowd favorite since birth and his dam has been a Pacesetter female for two consecutive years. 8724 ranks in the top 3% of the breed for MB EPD as well as top 15% across all 3 $Indexes. You will drive a lot of miles to find a sire that achieves this type of balance.

3

A powerful made, long bodied Answer son. He is out of one of the top bull producing mothers on the place as she produced the top feed efficiency sire a year ago and already has one of the top 2020 sire prospects on the ground. Pacesetter Dam, SL Emma 0708 struck gold again with 8716. Not only is he in the top 25% for BW EPD, but also in the top 20% for WW and YW and the top 5% for $BMI and $F.

Maybe one of the most expressively muscled bulls in the offering, Count 8786 is powerful in every dimension. He is heifer safe and has tremendous calving ease numbers including a 107 birthweight ratio in a group of 36 and top 10% BW, CED, and CEM EPDs. His mother’s progeny have indexed 106, 102, and 100 for birth, weaning and yearling. Don’t overlook his solid feed efficiency numbers as well.

Feeding & Development Done Right We employ the service of John Ney with Nutrition Solutions to help balance the feed rations as well as to monitor the intake and performance of the bulls. The bulls start out on the cow without creep feed and only rely on their mothers for weaning performance. This allows us to evaluate the performance of the cow as well as the calf. They are weaned on a high forage content mixed ration and allowed to grow at a slower pace to increase frame and give them time to develop. As final selections are made, the sale bulls are moved to a ration containing higher energy while maintaining a higher forage content. These bulls never see a concentrate ration and we feel that is important to a digestive system that will only have access to a forage based system post sale. Exercise is key in the development of a young sire; we feel that it’s important to give them access to plenty of space to move to aid in their growth.

The Growsafe system will find the outliers in the population for feed efficiency. 8801 is that freak on the low end of the spectrum. His gain was nearly right on the average with the group, but intake was a freakish 13 lbs./day. That is a ratio of 201 which means he ate half the amount of feed of the average for the group. That calculates at less that 3.5 lbs. of feed per lb. of gain. Incredible!! Put that efficiency with a top 5% $BMI and think about what kind of replacement females he generates.

Why

Invests in Feed Efficiency Testing

The simple answer, because feed is the number one controllable expense in beef production. That’s right, controllable. High feed efficiency can save huge dollars no matter which sector we are talking about; cow/calf, stocker, feedlot. Loving Farms genetics have a track record nearly two decades long of low feed conversion in their feeding environments. We have sought ways to quantify this back to the individual level, but it requires a substantial investment in time and facilities OR a feeding partner that is trying to make the cattle they feed better as well. This is the evolution for us and our feeding partners at HyPlains Feedyard.

“I’ve been feeding Marty Loving’s calves for more than 20 years. We have 20 years worth of data and his calves convert in the top 10% of the cattle we feed, and we feed some pretty good ones. His investment in the GrowSafe program shows his commitment to his customers and their end product.” - Tom Jones, Hy-Plains Feedyard

What should we expect? The first thing is to realize that the bull is only half the equation. Secondly, the females that these sires are mated to will vary as widely as the bulls in this offering. The take away is that this will be a multigenerational process. There will be some successes seen very quickly, others will take longer. Since it isn’t feasible to test every female, the progressive cattleman will select better than average bulls for the components of feed efficiency from now on and the result will be a positive increase in efficiency. How does feed efficiency impact my operation? Here are a couple of scenarios to help quantify what a shift in feed efficiency will mean to you. For both scenarios, assume a 20% increase in feed efficiency. Stocker/Feedlot:

Steers/heifers are placed in the feedlot for an average of 240 days on feed. Assume Dry Matter Intake (DMI) decreases by 20% (50#/hd to 40#/hd) and feed is costing $.049/lb. 240 days x 10% less days* = 24 days 24 days x $0.40 yardage = $ 9.60/hd 216 days x 10#/day x $.049/lb. = $105.84/hd $115.44/hd x 40 head Total savings of 40 head calf crop: $4,617.60

Cow/calf:

Spring calving cows are fed for 120 days from January 1 to May 1. Assuming forage hay cost is $70/ton and 24% protein at $500/ton. A 1300 lb. cow eating 2% of her body weight would consume 26# of dry hay and another 3.5# of protein to meet her requirements. 120 days x 5#/day of hay x $.0375/lb. = $22.50/hd 120 days x .7#/day of protein x $.25/ lb. = $21.00/hd $43.50/hd x 100 cows Total savings in a 120 day period: $4,350.00

Repeat these savings over a 5 year life span of that one bull and no other trait has that return on investment. *LF genetics for low feed conversion average a 8-10% increase in ADG meaning they reach goal weight faster.

Sale Terms

Semen and Breeding Soundness Exams All of the bulls will be semen checked and a Breeding Soundness Exam performed by sale day. These will be performed by our long term veterinarian Dr. Bill Niederee of Countryside Vet, Great Bend. We strongly encourage all buyers to always recheck before bulls are turned out to confirm that injury hasn’t happened between early February and the turn out time. Insurance We will have available a couple of different options for this year. The standard mortality insurance with two different coverage lengths. New for this year we will also have an option for coverage that includes not only mortality, but also infertility due to accident, sickness, disease or injury. Please inquire at settlement about insurance options. If insurance is not purchased, all bulls staying at Loving Farms awaiting delivery will be at the buyer’s risk. Health Each lot will be accompanied by a state approved health certificate for interstate shipment. Buyers should understand their specific state health requirements. For Canadian delivery, all necessary paperwork and fees will be completed by the seller and any costs/fees above that are required for domestic delivery will be at the buyer’s expense. All lots have been covered by a multi-product wide spectrum health program including Bovishield Gold, Pyramid 7, Ivomec, and Dectomax. Delivery Free delivery to customers in Kansas. All lots not picked up sale day will be kept free until April 1, 2020. Loving Farms providesdelivery to most points in the US for a minimal fee. Lots will be grouped by general direction and distance from Pawnee Rock and travel expenses divided over the number of lots on load. We guarantee cost for delivery inside the continental US will not exceed $300 per lot. There will be a $100 discount per lot on all bulls that are picked up sale day. Volume Discounts Any buyer that purchases 3 or more bulls will qualify for a volume discount equal to the number of bulls bought, up to 10%. Bulls must meet a $3000/bull minimum to qualify. Does not apply to heifer lots. Genetic Testing All of the bull lots have been DNA tested with the Neogen GGP-HD50K AI sire test. This will not only test for all known genetic conditions and verify parentage, but provides genomically enhanced EPDs (GE-EPDs). The females have been tested with the GGP-LD25K test that results in GE-EPDs. All females were either tested for genetic defects if probable by pedigree or ruled out by pedigree and not tested. Liability Each animal(s) will be at the buyer’s risk as soon as sold, but will be cared for by the sellers for a reasonable amount of time. If the buyer is leaving the animal(s) in the care of the seller, the buyer will purchase insurance for the duration of the care or accept any liability for their purchase. Neither the owners, employees, nor any other affiliated personnel can be responsible for any accidents, but they will make every effort to provide for the safety and comfort of those attending.

Sell Shorthorn-Influenced Calves for a Premium Let us partner with you!

Marketing at Weaning If your operation typically sells at weaning, we have buyers ready to purchase Shorthorn influenced calves without your typical market distortion (sorts on color, size,etc.). This eliminates yardage, sale expense, and essentially cuts out the middleman. Partial Ownership to Finish If your desire is to market the cattle to finish weight and maybe your cash flow doesn’t allow for it, we have feeding partners willing to own a percentage of the feeding group. This allows the owner a cash flow up front and still be able to participate in the profitability of finish cattle marketing as well as have the option to achieve any grid based premiums. Feed will be financed to finishing date and settlement will be made at close out. This is a nice option for the producer who has been a typical market at weaning operation that wants to transition. Retained Ownership Finishing The feed, yardage, and expenses are carried for the length of the feeding period and settled at close out. You are paid on the net of sale minus expenses. Our feeding partners have been exceptional in terms of rate of gain as well as feed conversion. They also have delivery rights for USPB and other grid based marketing opportunities. We have maintained a relationship with our feedlot partners for over 20 years and they have fed thousands of head of Shorthorninfluenced cattle. They are very much in tune with the ability of Shorthorn influenced cattle’s ability to gain and convert in the top tier of everything they feed. Allow us the opportunity to help you maximize the full value of Shorthorn genetics.

You put the power of those females with the kind of cattle Answer makes and the results are obvious. She has a ton of look and eye appeal and one of the most balanced EPD profiles in this female group.

The Rose cow family is one of the oldest on the place. They have not stood the test of time because they are poor performers. This heifer is an example of the kind of females they are. Reliable calving ease in a solid moderate mature frame.

The one roan heifer in the offering and she is a good one. She is put together to be a stellar brood cow and would not be leaving if it wasn’t for her color. This heifer goes back to the cow family, the Cumberland’s, that produced the great Jake’s Proud Jazz bull of a few years back.

Not very many of the Okie cow family get to leave the farm, they are a cog in the bull making machine. Here is an opportunity to own one of the highly productive Okies. She is solid on calving ease and will be moderate on growth.

Benefits of to cow/calf producers

All bulls will sell with GGP50K testing that provides genomically enhanced EPDs (GE EPDs) as well as pedigree verification accuracy. GE EPDs have the equivalent accuracy of 12 calves weighed and measured built into their numbers. This is comparable to their first calf crop already being figured in. This greatly enhances the relationship between the numbers on paper and their actual performance. The heifers have been GGP25K tested which equates to about eight calves worth of accuracy. Maternal GE-EPDs – Improve profits per cow: • Verify calving-ease bulls, saving time, cost and stress when calving heifers. • Identify bulls and cows with superior reproduction traits to improve cowherd fertility and maternal productivity. • Better fertility improves conception rates, calving window and calf-crop uniformity. Performance GE-EPDs – Optimize efficient returns: • Produce cows that improve pounds weaned per exposed female. • Produce cows for optimum growth for your grazing environment. • Improve feed efficiency, producing heifers and cows that gain well on less feed and pass thrifty traits onto to their calves. Quality GE-EPDs – More consistency of beef quality: • Helps customers retaining calves, or selling into grids or value networks. • Adds value and reputation quality in stockers or feeder calves. • Predicts quality up front, saving years of valuable time, with less hassle than collecting carcass data. *Info from genomics.neogen.com “Using GE-EPDs with improved accuracy improves the reliability of the decisions breeders make, and ultimately, the rate of progress their selection program can deliver for cow/calf producers.” Bob Weaber Kansas State University
