LAWNS By Nolan Mills A green well cut lawn is an asset to any garden. It also helping the environment by absorbing carbon dioxide and soaking up excess rainfall. The main problems with lawns are bare patches, weeds and moss. Bare patches can be oversown with grass seed but they must be well watered until the new grass gets established. it needs constant treatment to keep them at bay and only grow grass. If the lawn is shaded by buildings, fences or trees then moss will be a problem. This can easily be killed by applying ferrous sulphate in the autumn and spring. To grow well the lawn will need feeding with a fertiliser high in nitrogen; this needs balancing with other nutrients i.e. phosphate and potash particularly if the grass clippings are being removed.
