Reflections from Klehm As I look back on 2017 and reflect on the accomplishments of the past twelve months, I realize what a whirlwind of activity and changes it was, all contributing to a busy year at Klehm Arboretum & Botanic Garden. After a year of planning, the new Garden Pavilion & Terrace was completed in time for Garden Fair to be the inaugural event. The Pavilion was busy the rest of the summer for civic, corporate and private functions. And this fall we broke ground on a new water/play feature located in the Olson Children’s Garden to debut in summer 2018. These facility enhancements will pay dividends for years to come.

Our special events had a banner year. Botanica, Klehm’s “gardeners” luncheon spring fundraiser, was a sold out event with a wonderful speaker, program and lunch. Garden Fair Weekend was blessed with big crowds and beautiful weather. Some structural changes initiated the previous year are paying off ensuring a successful event and Klehm’s largest fundraiser.

Critical urban renewal projects continue along South Main Street enhancing access to Klehm and contributing to the beautification of the city’s southern gateway and Rockford’s historic district. The 2,500 daffodils along Main Street, planted the year before, signal you are in the “Arboretum District” and reinforced by the new street light banners.

Along with the Board of Directors, we extend our sincere appreciation to the individuals, corporations, foundations and the Forest Preserves of Winnebago County who provided generous funding and support for Klehm’ s ongoing operations. Collectively we have planted a solid foundation for our community’s Living Museum.

Planning for the Future The Klehm Board of Directors has been focusing on Strategic Assessment and identifying projects that enhance the overall visitor experience for members and patrons. The first project completed to advance this goal was the Garden Pavilion & Terrace, completed May 2017, which has exceeded expectations as a “garden” venue for weddings and other events.

The second project to be initiated is the interactive water play feature to open this summer (2018) in the Nancy Olson Children’s GarGarden Fair Weekend den. The goal is to attract younger families to engage in “Nature Play” as an antidote to electronic gadgets and instill value in being outdoors and engaged in creative play. Though still under construction, Klehm expects a grand opening in June of 2018.

The Board of Directors are excited about the new facility improvements and the enhanced visitor experiences as they explore ways to improve Klehm Arboretum & Botanic Garden as a public garden and cultural asset for the Rockford region.

Event Highlights Garden Fair Weekend is our #1 fundraiser and 2017 was another record-setting year with both attendance and vendor participation steadily increasing since the 2016 revamp.

Botanica attendees enjoyed the southern charm of Jon Carloftis who shared landscaping tips and photos of famous client gardens.

Arbor Dash 5K had a great turnout despite the rainy weather. We have many regulars who join us each year for this early spring run.

Klehm Arboretum Foundation, Inc. BUR OAK ENDOWMENT FUND Building on Our Goal Klehm Arboretum Foundation was chosen by the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois to participate in the Carroll Starr Endowment Challenge VIII. The Carroll Starr Endowment Challenge VIII provides an incentive of matching dollars for contributions toward the campaign.

The fundraising campaign began October of 2016 and will end in October of 2018, all contributions and donations to the Klehm Foundation will be applied to reaching a campaign goal of $40,000.

At this writing, I am pleased to announce that Klehm is well on its way to reaching our goal. As of December 31, 2017 contributions to the campaign are $29,400 with additional pledges to be paid in 2018 of $10,000, $6,000 and $2,500. The Carroll Starr Endowment Challenge VIII campaign total is anticipated to be $48,000.

The Klehm Foundation Board of Directors, by May or June 2018, expects to make an announcement that our campaign goal of $40,000 has been reached and the Carroll Starr Endowment Challenge VIII, through the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois will provide a $13,000 match for a combined addition to the Bur Oak Fund of $61,000.

All funds contributed to the Klehm Foundation are held in the Bur Oak Endowment Fund and represents long term financial support for the Arboretum & Botanic Garden. Only the growth and interest of the fund can be used for distribution supporting the facilities and programs at Klehm. The Bur Oak Fund has grown to the point of providing Pat Olson, President over $10,000 annually to support the operations John Richards, Treasurer of Klehm Arboretum & Botanic Garden.

Since its inception in 2009, the Bur Oak Endowment Fund has grown to $350,000 or one-third of the way to the Foundation Board’s ultimate goal of a one million dollars in the Bur Oak Fund.
