This is Kläppen Kläppen is one of the southernmost ski resorts in the mountains, and the first one you’ll arrive at in the Sälen mountains. We want to make life easy for you while you’re here so that you can enjoy your holiday, so you can collect the key to your cabin from our key station near your cabin. If you like, your breakfast will be in the fridge and your skis will be by the door. If you’ve also pre-booked the ski school and your ski pass, you can start enjoying your stay straight away.

FINDING YOUR WAY AROUND KLÄPPEN IS EASY Almost all our cabins have ski in-ski out locations, with smart ski paths that cut the distance to the skiing and Tranantorget, where you’ll find the ski school, the children’s area, restaurants and our ski shop. If you carry on a short way past that, you’ll arrive at the Welcome Centre with its reception desk, Brasserie Karelius and the huge ski shop where you can hire skis. There are cross-country tracks, a grocery store and a great campsite nearby.

SKIING IN FOUR DIRECTIONS Kläppen is more of a hill than a mountain, so we’ve had the opportunity to plan every piste to give you the perfect skiing experience. Best of all, everyone can ski from the summit no matter how inexperienced they are, because we have both simple and advanced pistes to offer. Last year we doubled the size of our children’s area, and this year our cosy waffle house is open for business.

SKIING IS KEY

We’ve made the most of the countryside here and created skiing that we enjoy ourselves. Kläppen is the only resort in Sälen to offer skiing in all four directions. You can always enjoy the sun on one side, and the forest provides shelter from the wind and icy summits. The snow is so fantastic that it’s been given its very own name – Kläppen snow! Our state-of-the-art snow cannon system quickly produces large volumes of snow, enabling us to open many slopes early on in the season.

What a lift! Gondola success continues

FACTS GONDOL SÄLEN Gondol Sälen is the first gondola lift in the Sälen mountains and is one of the most modern in the world. BUILT TO WITHSTAND HARSH WEATHER

The gondolas withstand harsh weather. Airborne lifts have to be closed for safety reasons in high winds. Depending on the direction of the wind, most airborne lifts close at wind speeds of 16 metres per second. Gondol Sälen as an automated wind alarm system and is able to handle no less than 18 metres per second. It also copes extremely well with freezing conditions. The electrically heated seats keep the guests warm. Because you get warm on the way up, you can ski at colder temperatures without freezing. Not a bad thing during sudden cold spells in December and January.

slow down at the stations to give everyone time to get on and off. Boarding and alighting are of course supervised by staff just in case anything should happen. If you’re afraid of heights, our advice is to give it a try. You can start by riding between the Welcome Centre and Tranantorget. Many people feel safer sitting “indoors” with a floor beneath their feet and don’t get dizzy. CAPACITY – 2,400 PEOPLE AN HOUR

The gondola lift has high capacity and is able to transport 2,400 people an hour with its 47 gondolas. Every gondola accommodates 10 people, so there are no long queues for the lift in the Kläppen ski system.

The gondolas offer outstanding safety. Children of all ages can use them without being accompanied by an adult. It’s impossible to fall out of the windows or doors when the gondolas are in the air. They

More people than ever visited Kläppen last year, and many of them had heard about the gondola and wanted to give it a try. “What a lift!” was their considered summary. And of course, we agree entirely. Although the resort was full throughout last season, there were no queues to be seen. The 47 gondolas did their job and transported ski school students, pushchairs, cross-country skiers, snowboarders and alpine skiers. Suddenly everyone wanted snacks and drinks at Toppstugan and to enjoy the views from the gondola itself on its way up the mountain, the new platform at the summit and from Toppstugan itself (with a steaming hot chocolate in their hands). Getting up to the summit has become an experience in itself. HOW DO YOU TRAVEL ON THE GONDOLA?

It’s easy. You decide whether you want to get on at the Welcome Centre or Tranantorget. You hold your skis in your hand, and when the gondola arrives you place your skis or board in the rack on the outside and climb aboard while the gondola moves gently and slowly the whole time. This gives you plenty of time to board, and there are no stoppages or waiting times. Our team can help you out if necessary. Each gondola carries 10 people, and the seats are heated. Perfect rest and relaxation for tired legs, and you have the opportunity for a good chat and forging new friendships. The entire journey takes eight minutes from bottom to top, and five minutes from the intermediate station to the summit. At the summit, you get out of the gondola at your own pace and remove your equipment from the rack.

There’s a huge bang when Vera (aged 9) and Tea (aged 15) fling the outside door open. Before they head off once more, they hear their mum calling them to tell them to wear their warm mittens because it’s absolutely freezing out there – oh, and not to forget their mobiles. The cold causes their breath to condense in the air, and Vera blows out pretend smoke as they quickly put on their skis and head for the lift. It’s the first day of their holidays, and they’ve spent a few weeks looking forward to snow and skiing. When they jump off the lift, Tea sees her sister straightening her specs and heading off towards the Junior Park. Tea takes her time, she’s planning on trying Harlyckan and they’ve agreed to meet up at Tranantorget. When she arrives, she doesn’t see Vera so she takes the opportunity to head for the shop and do a bit of browsing. She’s actually promised to do this with her mum anyway, but it can’t hurt to take a sneak peek. Five minutes later, she’s decided to see if she can persuade her mum to buy her some flowery pink longjohns. Through the window, she sees Vera peering across the hill and rushes out of the shop. Vera glares crossly at her – after all, she’d promised they’d head for the gondola. 15 minutes later, they’re floating over Kläppenberget. It’s lovely to warm up for a while, and they agree to ski to the west side. They look at their watches and decide to make time to head over to the big park to watch people jumping. “We’ll get the best view if we take the chairlift,” says Tea, working out that this will give them just enough time before they have to meet mum and dad at the summit. Gondol Sälen makes it easy to get all the way up to the summit, even for children. And it’s exciting as well. There’s no age limit, it can be used by children of all ages. And when their tummies start to growl, they don’t have far to go to get back to their cabins or any of the cafés or restaurants for waffles and cream with their families. At Kläppen lots of children go skiing on their own, because after all – your favourite slope is your favourite slope, isn’t it? Or maybe more than one favourite. What’s more, parents take absolutely ages to get ready in the mornings and they need so many more breaks when you could just spend the time on the slopes instead. FAMILY ABOVE ALL

And not only our younger guests use the slopes. At 2pm, when the school bus arrives, lots of the children from the Sälen mountains spend a couple of hours on the slopes before heading off for homework and other activities. That’s because Kläppen is ideal for children. It’s easy to find, and most slopes lead to Tranantorget, which is a perfect place for all the family to meet up. And it’s particularly brilliant for people with younger brothers and sisters, because Tranantorget is also home to the children’s area, with its playground, sledge slope, ski school and children’s slopes. You can park your mum and dad there and do all the skiing you like, all the way up to the summit.

The world’s best Kläppen snow!

All that beautiful snow that makes your skis glide perfectly – just how is it made? Kläppen knows how.

FACTS HOW KLÄPPEN SNOW IS MADE Snow is made from water and air. Water is pumped out at a certain pressure and then mixed with air. To create that special Kläppen snow, a precise amount of water from our own spring is mixed with a precise amount of air.

And at Kläppen, we love snow. We’ve devised a recipe that ensures our snow cannons pump out a realistic kind of snow that’s ideal for skiing. Kläppen snow is based on dry cannon snow, which results in large snow crystals and lots of volume. The secret is to mix exactly the right amount of air and water when laying down the snow. When the temperature is right, the mixture is spread at high pressure across the mountainside. DURABLE SNOW

There’s natural snow, cannon snow and Kläppen snow. If you make a snow lantern from natural snow, it melts really quickly when the thaw begins. Kläppen snow is more durable, and snowballs become compact more quickly when you make them. This durable snow allows us to offer skiing until well into the spring. Kläppen snow can be laid down early in the season – all we need are freezing temperatures. And when the soft, white Kläppen snow is on the ground, it’s able to withstand both milder weather and windy conditions considerably more effectively than natural snow. So we have white slopes with plenty of snow, even if there’s not much of it elsewhere. POWERFUL CANNONS

At Kläppen, the snow is at least half a metre deep on most of the slopes. We also have some of the world’s top cannons here, producing 600 litres of snow a minute. We not only fill the slopes with Kläppen snow, we give plenty to the cross-country tracks as well so that enthusiasts can get going as early as possible. The fact is, Kläppen snow is so popular that we’ve actually helped the Vasalopp ski race to guarantee it can take place. KLÄPPEN MAGAZINE 17

FACTS GROOMERS Groomers weigh between 5 and 12 tonnes. At the very front is a dozer blade that collects up the snow and spreads it out. The cutter at the back of the machine breaks up densely packed snow and blocks of ice. It also has a pressure mat to create the perfect snow surface.

The groomer operators are the heroes of Kläppen. While you’re asleep, they create the soft, grooved base that works miracles on the slopes. They start work as soon as all our skiing guests have packed up for the day. Our groomer operators then inspect the slopes and decide how to go about grooming them overnight to create that beautiful Manchester pattern in the snow that you find in the morning. The grooved surface makes the base more durable and keeps the snow in good condition for freshly prepared skis and wonderful turns. All our operators are skiers and snowboarders themselves, and they know exactly what’s needed to create the best conditions for our guests. They spend a total of 35 hours a day between them, working up and down the pistes. In all weathers. The slopes are dark, and the lights from the groomers light up the night. Some of our slopes are really steep and require focus and a great deal of concentration. There’s a GPS system in the cab alongside the driver, measuring snow depth in real time. This allows perfect amounts of snow to be placed in the right locations. Groomer operators also know how to shape perfect jumps and soft landings. Thanks to them, you can wake up to a brilliant day of skiing with the best snow.

The weather gods seem to like Kläppen, and they’ve given us plenty of snow for many years. Not only does the cold weather come early, our geographical location also makes the snow very durable. Our investment in a state-of-the-art snow cannon system means we can promise wonderful skiing from day one of the season. Our snow guarantee is one of the best in Sweden and covers 14 slopes from the start of the season on 8 December until closing day on 8 April. If Kläppen fails to fulfil these snow guarantees, guests will be entitled to a refund for their cabin and ski hire and ski passes, if purchased via Kläppen’s booking office. If you choose to come to Kläppen anyway, you’ll receive a 20% discount on your ski pass regardless of the duration.

Weddings on skis Snowy trees, a dreamy mist and a ceremony with their skis on. Johanna and Henrik Fridell got married at the top of the mountain at Kläppen. “It was absolutely magical, even better than I’d imagined,” says Johanna.

They’d been engaged for almost a decade and were considering getting married on a beach in Thailand, or maybe in a beautiful Swedish church. But then they visited Toppstugan in Kläppen with their two children, and as they sat drinking coffee and admiring the view across the valley, the choice was obvious. Johanna, Henrik and their children had spent lots of snowy weeks skiing here in Kläppen – and this was where they wanted to get married. “Kläppen is a bit like our second home. We all love skiing, and we spend several weeks a year here,” explains Johanna. So one Thursday in early February 2017, five wedding guests from all over Sweden headed over here with their luggage and their skis and checked into Kläppen’s little holiday village. Some of the older guests were a little dubious when they found out it was going to be a mountain wedding. What were they supposed to wear, ski outfits? “Some people stick with the old traditions, but they don’t really know why. We decided to do things our way.” GUESTS GOT TO KNOW ONE ANOTHER

On the day of the wedding, the valley was bathed in a magical mist and the snow had formed crystals that glittered like gems. Children Signe, 7 and Nils, 9 strapped on their 24 KLÄPPEN MAGAZINE

skis early in the morning. The snow crunched under their boots, and they were really excited about the whole thing. They enjoyed a little skiing with their dad Henrik and a few of the wedding guests. Many of the guests had never met before, but they were soon able to forge friendships during their trip. They skied down white slopes together, enjoyed the après ski dancing and munched on stonebaked pizzas at Karelius. “It was absolutely brilliant to spend three days with our guests. It gave us time to have a good chat with everyone and spend time together. It can be quite difficult to do that if you just meet up at the actual wedding breakfast,” says Johanna. Johanna herself started the day by taking the lift up to Toppstugan, where the wedding breakfast was to be held. Preparations were already in full swing. Kläppen staff members of the family were decorating and setting tables. White tablecloths, spruce twigs and pine cones instead of place cards created a forest look on the tables. “I suppose I was a bit of a bridezilla, I had to keep tabs on everything down to the tiniest detail! But everybody really helped out,” laughs Johanna. Then Johanna headed down to the cabin where her friend Hanna was waiting. They enjoyed champagne and

delicious chocolate and spent some time winding down before it was time to get out their make-up bags to make the bride look even more beautiful. LIKE A FAIRYTALE

And then it was time. The mist turned the sky white and the landscape was covered in a snowy shimmer. Johanna’s bridal bouquet, which was made up of green plants, stood out beautifully against the white backdrop. “I wanted it to look as though I’d just bent down in the forest and picked it up!” The UK also had lights woven into it so that it could be seen clearly after dark. When the happy couple made their entrance – or, rather, headed off to the lift – passers-by applauded and passed on their congratulations. They smiled as the photographer took photo after photo, creating memories for life. The guests had already gone up in the gondola, where they were served Vargtass cocktails made from vodka and lingonberry juice. They were all gathered on the Toppstugan terrace, waiting with burning torches in their hands

for the bride and groom. It was starting to get dark, but the lift had stayed open especially for the wedding. The lift staff were wearing smart jackets in honour of the day, and the children were all carrying burning torches. “It was silent and dark, and when I saw all our friends and relatives standing there to greet us, it was like a fairytale – it gave me shivers down my spine,” says Johanna. Johanna and Henrik skied slowly and reverentially over to the priest, accompanied by the gentle sound of a violin playing. “I don’t think I’ve ever been so happy. It was even better than I’d imagined. Some bits I remember really well, like when we skied up to the priest, or when all the people we love so much hugged and congratulated us.” When the sky was bright with stars, Japanese lanterns were lit. The crackling sound, red and white paper lanterns drifted slowly up towards the sky. Eventually, only tiny, tiny dots could be seen. “Time actually stopped for a moment as we stood there looking at the sky. We decided to go for an untraditional wedding, and we did things exactly the way we wanted them. It was absolutely magical,” says Johanna.

A resort has to have passion

“I want to go first!” Love shoves past her sister. The virgin snow glitters, and in this game one person creates a track that everyone else has to follow. The rest of the Eriksson family follow in the footsteps of the youngest son. This reminded them of the time when Gustav was little and followed his dad Per around the mountain, snowshoes strapped to his feet. In those days they went out to plan skiing at Kläppenberget, find the best slopes made the most of the magnificent views across Sälendalen while also creating the kind of terrain that would provide ideal skiing for different proficiency levels. The resort now has 37 pistes, and after last year’s refurbishment Gustav is really pleased with how well things went. “I’ll never be 100% happy with what we’ve achieved. As soon as we’ve reached one target I start planning for the next one, but we’ve decided we’d prefer to grow organically. We’re expanding our accommodation and facilities as our guest numbers grow. We have KPIs to work to, so I know exactly what we need to do to make sure no bottlenecks form. You should never need to find yourself stuck in a crowd and queueing here at Kläppen.” Gustav barely finishes his last sentence before a cascade of snow smacks him in the face. Ella and Love look at what they’ve done with a mixture of fear and delight, then they rush away screaming as their dad Gustav sets off after them. A little while later, they’re all lying in a heap in the deep snow when mum Lena intervenes, telling them it’s time to head off for drinks and snacks. 32 KLÄPPEN MAGAZINE

Play is important when you run a ski resort aimed at families with children. “We’re a family with children, and we want to create great holidays for others like us. Of course, we need to be profitable if we’re to be able to grow. But that said, we reinvest nearly all our profits in the company and don’t have to listen to demands from other shareholders. We’re passionate about creating the best ski resort we can. That’s why we give priority to our trolls and our Snow Realm, and to creating a resort based on simplicity. Children can even head up to the summit in the gondola on their own here. You have to make sure you understand your guests,” says Gustav, gazing lovingly at Lena and patting her tummy. Their third baby is growing in there. “Yes, we’ll really have to practise getting our pushchair up to Toppstugan,” says Len, who’s taking maternity leave this winter from her job as Kläppen’s HR manager. GONDOLA SUCCESS

Their ambition with the gondola was far more successful than they’d ever dared to hope. “Even the sceptics have come over and congratulated us on our successful investment. When the old people in the village come up to me and tell me that this is the first time they’ve been able to get up to the summit and reminisce since they were young, it really makes my heart sing. It makes me realise just what we’ve achieved,” says Gustav.

The gondola has made Kläppenberget accessible to everyone. “We’re seeing an increase in day guests, and last year we sold several thousand single tickets for the gondola. You see people wearing jeans at the summit nowadays. The reputation of the brilliant gondola in the north has spread into Europe, and were able to view the manufacturers’ pictures of the Kläppen gondola at the huge Interalpin trade fair in Innsbruck. It was a bit like suddenly being allowed into the parlour!” laughs Gustav. THINKING LIKE DOWNHILL SKIERS

Gustav is really enjoying life at the moment. He’s just completed his first year as CEO in what’s turned out to be the best season ever in the history of the company. His studies are behind him, and he feels he’s achieved balance in his life. “I think in our case, the key fact is that everyone working at Kläppen is passionate about skiing. We owners ski, we think like skiers. We ski at our resort, we live at our resort. We see the guests every day, we chat to them, they give us ideas. When the management team gets together for discussions – and all of us are passionate skiers and parents – we say you can tell straight away whether a resort has passion. We’ve visited a number of resorts where people can ski, but the whole thing seems mechanical. For instance, we believe we can compete with the Alps

now that the airport in Sälen will be completed by the 2019/2020 season.” Above all, Kläppen has its sights set on the British market. Surveys show that the British are interested in the Kläppen concept, and an international initiative has already begun. “Skiing for children is important here. In the Alps, children are normally kept to a restricted area at the foot of the hill. We integrate skiing for children all the way up to the summit, and we have a large area where children can grow and develop. Not least, our Junior Park is unique – it has jumps and rails that directly reflect the big park.” We meet up with grandma Metta and grandpa Per on the way up to Toppstugan. On their backs we see the word Kläppenambassadör – Kläppen Ambassador – a title that Metta is incredibly proud of. “I’m a pensioner now. I love my life, and gliding round the slopes chatting to people suits me to a T. I help guests out, I answer their questions and I give them tips. People normally appreciate it,” she says happily. SO WHAT DO GUESTS SAY?

“They think the ski system is really brilliant thanks to the refurbishment. Lots of people mention the gondola, they say it’s a natural place where the family can get together and that it gives them enough energy for more skiing because it gives them time to rest,” says Metta. KLÄPPEN MAGAZINE 33

Per, who handed over the CEO’s job to Gustav, is also enjoying life as a pensioner and having plenty of time to go skiing. He swishes down the slopes with speed and grace. You can’t miss the fact he used to be an award-winning elite skier. He is still an important mentor to Gustav and the Kläppen team, and he’s still a member of the board. Being a sidekick is perfect for him. DESCRIBE A STANDARD ERIKSSON FAMILY WEEKEND...

Gustav pauses for thought. “We usually have a long breakfast on Saturdays, until about 10 o’clock. Then we do a few household chores and head for Kläppen in time for lunch, where we normally meet up with a few friends or relatives who are already out on the slope. Then we ski and snowboard until we’re worn out. On Sundays, we head up to the slope a bit earlier so that the kids can do their skiing and snowboarding practice in the morning with their local sports club. Then we have lunch at Kläppen and continue the afternoon with a spot of downhill or cross-country skiing.” A PLACE TO MEET UP

Kläppen is the place where the village children meet up. This is where they go after school. “This is often where the kids come to meet up with their friends. They spent some time skiing and playing, then they head for home. You don’t need all that much planning and you don’t need to give the kids lifts if you have a natural place where they can meet up.” SO WHAT HAPPENS NOW?

“The foundations are in place, and we’re building accommodation at a cracking pace at Gullbrändan. We have an extra 400 beds this season. Above all, these are fresh, new apartments located in the middle of the hill. 34 KLÄPPEN MAGAZINE

We’re also focusing more on conferences, school trips and group travel. Another construction phase is planned for next year. We want to build at just the right pace so that the system is able to keep up. We’ll be introducing more slopes in the long run, too. I’ve got my outlines done, but we have no idea as yet as to when they’ll be completed. There are no limits. The increase in demand means we’re shifting up a gear.” Kläppen’s own accommodation has also been renovated, and Gustav chats about the green initiatives involving LED lighting on the pistes. “Yes. Last year we had the highest number of open pistes at the start of the season – for the third year in a row. Even if the weather turns quickly, we’re good at laying snow. For instance, we promise there’ll be 14 open pistes by 8 December and 2 km of cross-country track by 24 November. We opened 19 pistes in December last year, on both the west and the east side. So it goes without saying we have the best snow guarantee in Sweden. It’s important to us that people can feel secure in booking early. Our huge investments in snow are bearing fruit.” They put down their snowboards and walk into Toppstugan. They’re greeted by lots of people – Gustav and Lena seem to know everybody, and lots of people take the opportunity to have a quick word with them. Regular guests come over and hug them, and the staff greet them with enthusiasm. Ella chooses fresh carrot cake for her snack, while Love – who could eat a horse, she’s so hungry – digs into her waffle. Gustav and Lena gaze across the room, looking at all the people sitting and enjoying a nice time. Then they swap glances, smile and sit back with satisfaction. Kläppen is their life, 24/7.

Where the elite work out in time for the Winter Olympics Every spring, Kläppen creates a massive jump for the Swedish national snowboarding and freeskiing teams. When the park closes for the season, it opens to the elite. These talented people have the park to themselves for a week so that they can work on their tricks ahead of the coming season.

When the sun is starting to warm the air and Kläppen has closed for the season, around 20 of our national skiers check in. They can train here completely undisturbed, developing their tricks prior to the South Korea Winter Olympics in February. “This gives our team the perfect opportunity to work on their weak points without having a great big audience,” says Stefan Karlsson, head of the Swedish national snowboarding and freeskiing team. The national team heads out to Kläppen to train even when the Winter Olympics aren’t looming, and that’s a week everyone looks forward to. “There’s always a great atmosphere there, and we can do our stuff at a world-class park too Kläppen has the snow, the experience and the intuition. There’s a passion for snowboarding here, and the staff give us some absolutely brilliant support,” says Stefan. The groomer operators have already been out and groomed the slopes by the time the team wake up at seven in the morning. This 38 KLÄPPEN MAGAZINE

gives them the perfect ground on which to hone their skills and practise completely new ones – something they don’t often have time for during the competition season. The team spend a lot of time practising every day, with occasional rail sessions. “Nothing beats skiing in spring. At the point where summer meets winter, the snow is fairly soft, the team are in the groove and their favourite music is playing at the park,” says Stefan. EASY-GOING ATMOSPHERE

The team members stay in cabins together. They cook together, play music through speakers that someone brings along, do their stretches after a long day on the slopes and watch snowboarding videos showing inspiring tricks. “We’re like a big, travelling family.

How do you give the team a boost?

“The important thing is not to be too strict – let them have fun together while learning new things. And that’s exactly how things are with this team. The atmosphere in the group is absolutely fantastic, and you can tell they love what they do.” RECHARGING BATTERIES FOR THE WINTER OLYMPICS

At the moment they’re focusing on the Winter Olympics in South Korea, to be held in February. Since their week of training in Kläppen, the team have visited Crete and spent time cycling through the mountains, worked on their fitness and enjoyed discovering the island. Since then, they’ve all been on intensive training schedules so that they’re at peak fitness in time for the Winter Olympics.

You competed in the Winter Olympics yourself, in Salt Lake City in 2002 and Turin in 2006. What do you remember most?

“One of my biggest moments was when the halfpipe competition was about to start in Salt Lake City. 20,000 were watching, and they just roared when the announcer asked ‘Are you ready?’. People were so enthusiastic, it was a great feeling. Having the support of your audience means a lot.” Stefan, who’s won plenty of medals in his time – including Olympic silver in halfpipe – has worked hard on the Kläppen halfpipe, the only one in Sweden, prior to many major championships. “Kläppen was the first resort in Sweden to maintain the landings in the morning so that they’d be easier to use. That was quite unique in those days. It’s brilliant that Kläppen is continuing to develop the park and focus on snowboarding.”

Try JUNIOR SNOWPARK by Helly Hansen At Kläppen, the kids don’t just have to stand watching the adults skiing. Instead, they have a park all of their own which is a copy of the big park. The Junior part has rails, jumps and boxes, albeit in a smaller format. The park is maintained carefully by Kläppen’s park keepers, who go around fixing things and make sure the park is very safe and in tiptop condition. The landings are soft, and there are paths off to the side for anyone who changes their mind. Everyone can have fun here, so keep an eye on the kids and come along and join them!

Where the big trolls are kings You can see them from a distance. Full of self-confidence, a gang of schoolchildren hop aboard the gondola pointed out by ski instructor Kevin. He counts them to make sure all eight of them are present. On the way up, they talk tactics. They’ll be skiing at the Junior Park for the first time, and he tells them what they need to remember. The spark of eager anticipation in eight pairs of eyes can’t be missed. They’ve been waiting for this, and now they’re ready. “The children learn a huge amount by playing at the ski school. And they learn quickly, says ski instructor Kevin Kemppainen. Galant shows one of the children how he’s learned to spray the snow up when he breaks. “Wow, a plough! Somebody shouts.” All the children laugh enthusiastically. They learn something new every day at the ski school, and make lots of new friends. Adults aren’t allowed at the children’s ski school. This is where children rule, and the hours simply rush by.

“It’s fantastic to see the delight on their faces when they achieve something new. They all but outshine the sun,” says Kevin. The fact that the children are all at different levels doesn’t matter at the ski school. They work on the basis of every child’s needs, and the children themselves get to make a few decisions as well. “We get the children interested in their exercises, and that’s normally very successful,” says Kevin. During the first lesson, it’s important for them to get to know one another. The children sit in a circle and chat about their favourite animals and interests. This gives them a sense of security. Then they strap on their skis and have some fun on the slopes, while also practising their balance or turns. Every lesson is like a little adventure!

Ski school goes with a swing Would you like to improve your carving turns, or maybe polish your technique? Our adult ski school makes you aware of how you’re skiing. “We could all develop our technique. Discovering new sides to skiing is a fantastic feeling,” says ski instructor Sandra Hallström. Did you think ski school was just for children and beginners? If so, think again. Ski school allows you to develop even if you’ve been skiing for years. Coaching from our professional ski instructors will help you to become more aware of the movements you’re using. The aim is for you to feel, in your body, when things are right or wrong. Integrate the information in your muscle memory, you could say. The lessons aren’t predefined – they’re tailored to your own specific needs, even when you train with a group of people. Being challenged and being given new tips can enhance

any skiing experience. For some people, it gives them the courage to head off down a steep descent or really go it when faced with a jump at the park. While for others, it helps to find a decent style so that their legs don’t hurt after a day of skiing. Little tricks can work wonders. “We start off looking at different skiing techniques, and you can usually see the results pretty quickly,” says Sandra Hallström, who’s on her fifth season as a ski instructor at Kläppen. “I love it! I meet so many people, and it’s a fantastic place to work. And I also get to do something I absolutely adore – skiing.”

Trolle and Trolla’s Snow Realm – a magical place for children only The home of Trolle and Trolla in Trollstuggu isn’t like everyone else’s homes. The trolls live here with their animal friends, who have a house all of their very own. So when you’ve peeped in and seen the trolls’ bedroom and where they eat, you can tiptoe into Fjöset to see the real footprints left by some exciting animals.

There are several animals to look at when you visit Trolle and Trolla, and they all stand still like statues. That’s because they’re under a magic spell, cast with troll powder. There’s lots to discover in the tiny houses, and adults are allowed to enter as well as long as their children keep an eye on them. You can get to the trolls’ house on skis, or you can head off on a Troll Safari, a snow scooter adventure to take your breath away. Someone is always up to mischief at the Snow Realm. You can ski down the troll slopes, go on a treasure hunt or try the trolls’ snow scooter for size. But there’s more. Trolle and Trolla spend their whole day playing with children all over Kläppen. SNOWMOBILE SAFARI Sitting on a snow scooter and enjoying the snow and the untouched countryside on the mountain around Kläppenberget is a fantastic feeling. DOG TEAM Being pulled on a sled through the beautiful winter landscape by our team of Alaskan Malamutes and Siberian Huskies is a real experience. With us you only share the tours with your family and friends, and there’s plenty of time afterwards to pat the dogs and take photos. You can also have a go at driving with a team of 2–3 dogs. SNOWTUBING Snowtubing is every bit as easy and fun as it looks, and it’s suitable for all the family regardless of age or physical condition. A snowtube is similar to a huge rubber ring, and you sit in it and slide down our specially built snow track, which is kind of like a waterslide. You can get to the start in the lift. Day & time: Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays (wks 52–14), 1.30–3.30pm. Price: SEK 70/ride, SEK 200/2 hours or SEK 590/family (4 people)/2 hours. Location: Backen Harlyckan. Skiing as early as November Kläppen’s cross-country skiing track is incredibly popular, and lots of people want to get cracking early on in the season. With our generous snow guarantee, we promise two kilometres of cross-country track as early as 24 November. These two kilometres of track with their snow guarantee are rapidly supplemented with a further eleven kilometres with both floodlights and Kläppen snow. Whether you’re a serious skier, ski for fun or mostly just enjoy pootling around in the countryside, you’ll love the Kläppen cross-country track. The Älvspåret track at the campsite winds along the river and offers some fantastic views. You can ski from early morning to late evening under floodlights here. The Toppspåret track can easily be reached by gondola, and why not finish off your session with a drink and a snack at Toppstugan? The gondola is included in your cross-country track tag when you’re wearing it somewhere visible and carrying cross-country equipment. People are becoming more and more interested in cross-country skiing, and they may need to brush up on their technique because of the lack of snow in southern Sweden over the last few years. Learning to push off and create glide is often the perfect way of getting more out of your skiing. A few instructions on waxing are often handy, unless of course you prefer unwaxed skis – which are also available from the shop.

GROUP LESSONS For those wanting to learn the basics of classic style cross-country skiing. You learn things like weight transfer during diagonal skiing, double poling and push off. Day: Tuesdays and Fridays. Duration: 90 min. Price: SEK 270 Meeting point: The Cross-Country Centre at the Welcome Centre. Necessary skills: You’ve tried it before and are able to ski in a straight line downhill. Note: For one attendee only the session is 60 minutes long.

Delightful natural track starting at Mitt i Pisten where the tracks meet. The track meanders through the woods and up over the swamplands on the east side of Kläppenberget. If you take the 8 km track there’s a great wind shelter and a BBQ area after about 4 km. You can connect here to the Trånggravsspåret track.

This track connects Toppspåret track with Myrspåret track. You can choose whether to descend first then ascend, or vice versa. If you want to get some more kilometres in then you can ski around all four tracks. This track winds a serpent path down the mountain in magnificent surroundings. Some parts are quite steep but are groomed to make it easy to plough or scissor, depending on the direction you take.

TOPPSPÅRET TRACK7 KM

Kläppen’s most breathtaking cross-country track that winds through an enchanting natural landscape. The track has a few humps. Where the track turns after about 3.5 km, there’s a snug wind shelter and a BBQ area. To get to Toppspåret track, take the gondola to Toppstugan, or ski along Trånggravsspåret track, which connects Myrspåret track with Toppspåret track. The gondola is included in your cross-country track tag when you’re wearing it somewhere visible and carrying cross-country equipment.

This track starts at the Welcome Centre and turns in Torgås, 7 km south of Kläppen. The track starts flat then enters a hillier section a few kilometres before Torgås. The entire track is floodlit between 5am and 10pm all week. Eight kilometres of track have machine-made snow and we open up as much track as possible in November. This is a very popular training section among our Vasalopp ski race guests.

Lunch at Tranan Tranan has something for everyone. This serves everything from tasty sandwiches for lunch time and themed evenings. And the music starts in the afternoons – this is where Kläppen really goes with a swing. Tranan, located at Tranantorget, is a natural assembly point near to Familjebacken. You can come here and enjoy a tasty sandwich for breakfast, giving you the perfect foundation for a day on the slopes. It also serves tasty homely fare, with a large selection of fresh salad ingredients and an à la carte option. You can also sneak in here for a break between runs and enjoy a bun and a cup of hot chocolate with whipped cream. Welcome to Persgården where you can buy the tastiest waffles Two hundred years ago, Persgården was on an estate in DalaJärna. In those days it was known as Anders-Persgården, but since Per Eriksson fell in love with the beautiful timbered building and transported it to Kläppen it’s been known as Persgården for short. It’s been waiting for completion since 2014, situated just above the children’s area – and this winter will see the grand opening. The rustic timber planks bear ancient traces of farm life and are now being revived for Kläppen, where the building was originally erected. Just as it used to be, the inner courtyard will be filled with playing children and people sitting and enjoying drinks and snacks together. You can imagine what it was like when home-made cheese, beestings pudding and salted beef were served 76 KLÄPPEN MAGAZINE

The advantages of renting

Renting equipment has a lot of advantages. You don’t need to pack anything or lug equipment with you. All your equipment will be high-quality and modern, and it’ll be ideal for your skiing style and experience. And you can try different things out. If your feet are a funny size, for instance, it’s great if you can just come in and swap to a different size while you’re here. If you’d like to buy skis or a board, you can give your preferred options a try before you make a decision. Experts who know everything there is to know about skiing are always on hand.

The perfect crosscountry skiing From 24 November we guarantee at least 2 km of floodlit cross-country track, and a further 37 km will be available not long after that. The shop has everything you need for your cross-country skiing experience. You can buy skis, clothing and wax, and you can even hire your cross-country equipment. To use the Kläppen cross-country track, all you have to do is wear your cross-country track tag somewhere visible on your clothing. This costs SEK 80 per day, and you can buy it online or at any of our receptions.

The workshop can fix your skis If you bring along your own skis or snowboard, you can drop them off for a little extra TLC. Even the dullest of edges can be restored at our workshop, and a little wax can get you moving. If you need any extra equipment, anything you might possibly need is available here – including good advice.

If you’d like to talk to Margareta Eriksson, it’s best to call her Metta. If you do, you can be sure you have her full attention – and few people know as much about Kläppen as she does. Now retired after 35 years with the Kläppen family company, she enjoys doing what she loves the most – skiing and spending time with people. “My days are fantastic. My work is completely voluntary, and I usually spend time on the slopes three or four days a week. I can pick and choose when I work nowadays, so in the event of a major snowstorm I just stay at home. I usually start off with lunch at one of the restaurants, then I go skiing, chat to people and give hugs to the staff. I think that’s important. They have to know they’re doing a brilliant job.” WHAT DO PEOPLE WANT HELP WITH?

“All kinds of things. Opening hours, how to return skis and where they can find things. I usually tell them about ‘Kläppen idag’ online, where they can find the day’s menus and all the things that are going on during the day. The gondola is absolutely superb. It gives me time to find out what they’ve been up to, and I can give them tips on different slopes to try and new stuff that is available. It’s lucky my jacket says Kläppen Ambassador, otherwise they’d probably be wondering who that chatty old lady is! As a Kläppen Ambassador, I’m ‘allowed’ to chat.” Per is retired as well now. Metta explains that they often turn up together, but Per reckons he ends up waiting around too much. “He’s a talented skier, and I think he chats to everyone – but that’s my job!” She laughs. When Metta isn’t skiing, she likes spending time outdoors. She used to ride a lot, but now she accompanies her granddaughter Ella on hacks. “I spend as much time with my grandchildren as I can. In winter will be at home in Kläppen, while in summer we’ll spend more time at the cottage in Stjärnorp in Östergötland where I grew up.”

KLÄPPEN LIFE – GROOMER OPERATOR

I put everything into getting things the way I want them It might be chucking it down with snow or blowing a gale, it might be cold and silent with a full moon beaming down. No matter what the weather, Kristofer Olsson is out grooming the Kläppen slopes every night during the ski season. “Imagine sitting at the top of a double-decker and peering out through a huge window. That’s exactly the feeling you get when you’re driving a groomer,” says Kristofer. As soon as the slopes have closed for the day, Kristofer and his colleagues get to work. They check the park and decide on what has to be fixed. They may have to remove some icy sections, for instance, soften up the landings after jumps or top up rails with snow at the sides. The slopes are dark, and the lights from the groomers light up the night. It’s a comforting light, according to Kristofer. Next to him in the cab is a GPS display where he can see the exact snow depth. “It’s absolutely brilliant. In the old days you just had to guess how much more snow you needed. I now have precise information of my fingertips.”

WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT YOUR JOB?

“That it’s so specific. I work out what I want the park to look like, and then I put everything into getting things the way I want them. It’s wonderful to see the results. It’s like painting the mountain with my machine. I like working nights, too. It’s quiet then, and there’s lots of time to go snowboarding during the day. WHAT QUALITIES ARE HANDY FOR A GROOMER OPERATOR?

“You have to be motivated and not be afraid of working nights. It’s important to enjoy your own company, too. As a groomer operator, you spend a lot of time on your own in the cab. Some people go mad and socialise a lot when they finish work, while others might end up being a bit wary of people.”

When someone raises the alarm, Erica is the knight in shining armour who turns up to deal with worried parents or sometimes people in shock. Erica simply radiates security, and she’s used to rolling her sleeves up and getting the job done. “I’m just sorting this out, I’ll be with you in five minutes,” she tells me prior to our interview. Erica is from Yttermalung. She studied sociology and economics at upper secondary level, then did her military service in Stockholm, worked in a warehouse in Norway, trained as a welder, travelled all over the world and spent quite a few years as a welder at the mine in Gällivare before she could no longer ignore her homesickness. She’s been working at Kläppen for four years now, and she loves her job. DESCRIBE YOUR DAY.

“I pack my snow scooter with my drill and my emergency bag. Then I head out over the mountain and make sure everything looks nice and safe and that the protective padding is in place, and then I put up warning sticks if necessary. Sometimes I call out the groomer to sort out any ice that’s formed overnight. There are generally three of us doing this job. Safety is right at the top of the agenda for Kläppen, and we go in for prevention as far as is humanly possible. But of course, incidents do happen. “We do see quite a few broken legs, arms and wrists. We have some decent medical training though, and it’s like having an ambulance on the slopes. When anything happens, someone alerts the lift staff and they contact us. We head out to the patient on our snow scooters and put them on our patient transport sledges, which come with spinal boards.” WHAT DO YOU REMEMBER THE MOST?

“When a boy got split up from his class and skied through the forest on his own. He was suffering from hypothermia, not least because he wasn’t wearing real skiwear. Was wearing just jeans and a jumper. His hip was dislocated, and he’d broken his arm and leg. He was so injured that we had to wait for an ambulance and pain relief before we could move him – that one really worried me. But in most cases we can deal with things, and sometimes people send me cards and emails to thank me afterwards. “My job is exciting and challenging. I have some fantastic colleagues, and I think my job is important. And what’s more I love the environment, I’ve skied all my life.”

KLÄPPEN LIFE – LIFT ENGINEER

Adrenaline at altitude He’s the son of Lima who returned to the district when his children were born. He longed for the quiet, the close proximity to nature, the family. Now Henrik Björk has lived in Sälen and worked at Kläppen for a decade. And he’s never regretted his decision. “It’s brilliant to have my ‘office’ out in the countryside and to spend all my time out there,” he says. Every day, all year round, Henrik heads out onto the Kläppen slopes to make sure the park is safe for all our guests. In summer and autumn, there’s a lot of preparatory work to be done before the ski season. That’s when all the lifts have to be lubricated. Henrik, who’s a lift engineer, climbs up towers that can be up to 30 metres high. Up there, he forces grease into each and every set of rollers so that the lifts are able to continue working before the season begins. DO YOU EVER LOOK DOWN?

“Yes, I can’t help it. And I have to admit, it does give me an adrenaline rush – but what a view!” Henrik has completed special training which allows him to work at altitude. There’s an enormous amount of emphasis on safety. Things mustn’t be allowed to go wrong. During the ski season, Henrik heads out on his snow scooter at seven in the morning and checks that all the lifts are working properly. He makes sure they start and that the emergency stop functions work, and he makes sure that all passengers can board and leave the lifts safely. He and his colleagues have a couple of hours in which to do this before the lifts open to enthusiastic skiers. By that time, everything has to be working perfectly. But anything can happen during the day. “If a lift breaks, you have to work quickly – you don’t want guests to have to hang around waiting when a lift has stopped.” WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT YOUR JOB?

“Getting to work and not knowing exactly what’s going to happen. Some days things get really busy. And I really enjoy being out in the fresh air all day. What’s more, this is a really sociable job! I spend quite a lot of time chatting to guests and lift operators when I’m out working, and we colleagues all get on really well together. We work together well as a team here.” When Henrik isn’t working, he spends a lot of time with his three children – who love skiing at Kläppenparken. “Just like me and my friends did when we were little. We headed to Kläppen and enjoyed a little off piste skiing. It was an exciting adventure for us. And now everything’s come full circle!”

She was born wearing skis. At the age of 15 she got into snowboarding and at the age of 20 she was introduced to Kläppens snowpark – and since then the park has been a firm fixture in Anna Fischer’s life. Nowadays she works as a Headshaper at Kläppen. “When I was offered a job at the park five years ago, I didn’t hesitate. How utterly brilliant to be able to work with the thing you love the most! I was pretty green when I arrived, I had no idea just how much effort goes into running a park. Nowadays I’m proud be able to work with a team as great as this.” Every morning starts off with a tour of the three parks. All the kicks have to look good, and the landings are painted carefully if visibility is poor. Then it’s time to share breakfast before the staff are ready to meet the day’s guests. They work in pairs and keep the parks under control throughout the day. They use a special shape-spade to make small adjustments, and remove snow where it’s been cut up. The work they do varies depending on the temperature and weather conditions. “There are three of us working in spring, more work is needed then because the snow melts in the sun. We have to apply salt sometimes to stop it melting.” DESCRIBE YOUR TYPICAL PARK BUILDING OPERATION FROM START TO FINISH.

“We get the whole team together and have a brainstorming session. We’re all talented park skiers, and we chat about what we personally like and what we want to get out of the park. Then Kristofer and I – we’re responsible for the park – pick up the ideas and run with them. We compile a plan and run tests to see how things will work. Not all ideas do work, and in that case we have to stop and think again. It’s more creative than you might think.” WHAT MAKES A GOOD PARK STAND OUT?

“It has to be built with passion – you notice that straight away. At Kläppen, it’s absolutely crystal clear that the staff love what they do. The big park has won a number of ‘best park’ awards over the years. Sometimes just standing at the side and looking on gives me withdrawal symptoms – all my mates are out skiing at the place where I work! I always hope to be able to fit in a couple of runs in the afternoon. I’m always raring to go when I do get some time off.” Anna chats about the great atmosphere at Kläppen and the desire to go snowboarding, a desire that never seems to wane. “Last summer I went to work at Thredbo’s Park, a ski resort in Australia. I adore winter.”

My aim is to turn guests into sensible skiers “My aim is to turn guests into sensible skiers, and to achieve this we need talented ski instructors.” Fredrik knows what he’s talking about. He started working as a ski instructor in 1999, and since then he’s coached ski instructors and taught many people to ski. Fredrik also works as an instructor for SLAO ski instructor training programmes. “My job includes coaching and managing supervisors working with the ski school, lifts and activities. There’s a lot of teamwork involved. I try to spend as much time outdoors as I can so that I can learn about how things work and see how everything goes together. I also accompany the ski instructors on their lessons so that I can have a chat to them later and provide feedback. It’s important for everyone to feel that they’re developing, and if we do that our guests will also feel that they’re developing. In peak season, we have more than 30 ski instructors here and I hold internal training sessions two or three days a week on everything from leadership to skiing technique and analysis.” Kläppen was the obvious holiday destination when Fredrik was a child and lived in Stockholm, and he’s been working at Kläppen since 2013. “It’s a brilliant place to work. Lots of people talk about that Monday morning feeling, but I actually look forward to starting a new week. The departments all work closely together, and I have the opportunity to do my bit and influence the development of the resort. I work with people who are passionate about skiing, and I get to help others to develop. Who could ask for more? I feel an enormous sense of pride when lift operators and ski instructors receive positive feedback from guests, and luckily that happens pretty frequently!” Fredrik is the kind of person who prefers to be challenged in life to some extent. When the snow’s melted, it’s time for him to head out on OCR races such as Toughest, which might include 10 km of running and around 40 obstacles along the way, including horizontal bars, climbing and crawling through mud. He shares this interest with his brother. “I’ve built an obstacle course at home, with rings, bars, a salmon ladder and ropes. I like contrasts. Hard training, cuddling up to the children, a quiet life and crowds of people in winter.”

There’s been a fair bit of construction work going on in Kläppen over the last few years. This season, we have an additional 400 beds to offer in our charming Gullbrändan holiday village. We’ve taken our inspiration from Dalarna, and it’s quite clear that everything’s been built with feeling. Cottage cosiness is key. Spending time with family and friends in the evenings is all part and parcel of a holiday. Cuddling up on the sofa in your thermals and woolly socks, roasting in the sauna surrounded by the scent of resin and gathering around a crackling fire aren’t everyday activities for many people, but they’re one of those things that makes a holiday memorable. You’ll never find yourself living cheek by jowl with others at Kläppen, and we have accommodation spread over nine areas to suit all tastes and pockets. Our cabins are spaced out all over the mountain, you can check in easily at any of our check-in stations (which you’ll find in the cabin areas), and smart ski paths* mean you’ll never have far to go to find a lift, and you can get to Tranantorget easily on foot or on skis. HORRMUNDBERGET You’ll soon notice that the Horrmundberget cabins are privately owned. Plenty of thought has gone into them, and they’re detached. Horrmundberget offers plenty of privacy and is close to the finest ski slopes. The area has a connecting lift* that takes you into the lift system. The cabins have anything from 4 to 12 beds.

KLÄPPBACKEN Kläppbacken is an area with detached houses. This area has been extended to include a few more lodges in time for this season. You’ll find an outdoor Jacuzzi on the sundeck and an indoor Jacuzzi in one of the three bathrooms. The living room has an exclusive kitchenette with an automatic espresso coffeemaker and on-tap carbonated water. The lodges have 12 beds. It’s also close to Tranantorget and the children’s area. These lodges are close to the Domherren rope lift*. Price category 13.

ÖREBÄCKEN Exclusive mountain lodge in a great location with spectacular views over Horrmundberget. The lodges have a modern Scandinavian design with space for 17 beds. MITT I PISTEN Mitt i Pisten is further up the mountain. The Horrmundberget lift passes right through the area, bringing several of the cabins even closer to a lift. Mitt i Pisten has large semi-detached dwellings with room for up to 10 people. Two families can easily share with the children sleeping in the large 4-bed loft. All the cabins 22 are equipped with a sauna and a sundeck, and some have their own outdoor Jacuzzis and fireplaces. Price categories 9, 10, 11 and 12.

CAMPING Our campsite is right next to the resort and offers good value accommodation to families who love skiing and the togetherness of camping. Kläppens Camping offers clean service buildings and close proximity to both downhill skiing and cross-country skiing thanks to its location next to the resort. The cross-country tracks pass right by the campsite. There’s also a waxing shed nearby, and a grocery store, Kläppen Handlar’n. More info at klappen.se.

KLÄPPENS STUGBY Kläppens Stugby is located between Tranantorget and Mitt i Pisten. It’s near the Junior Park, and one of Kläppen’s cross-country ski tracks runs alongside. The cabins are pleasant and have a large living room with a kitchenette and a lovely sundeck.

GUSJÖBYNS TOMTOMRÅDE The cabins here are intimate, and no two cabins are alike. Many families prefer Gusjöbyn as being close to the children’s area is practical. Everything is within walking distance. The cabins come in a variety of sizes of up to 10 beds.

SJUNGARBACKEN Sjungarbacken is one of the most popular areas, with apartments and a service building with a sauna and laundry. The apartments are well-planned with a bedroom and a sleeping loft. They have an open fireplace for extra comfort. Some of the apartments are included in Sjungarbacken Plus. Sjungabacken Plus guests have access to a wood-fired hot tub, gym, solarium, banquet room (up to 20 people) children’s playroom with games and ball pit, and games room with Xbox/Kinect. A key card is a passcard you have to have to be able to use our ski system. When ski days are loaded onto the key card, this is known as a ski pass. Key cards are compulsory for everybody skiing downhill at Kläppen. These are available to buy from the Welcome Centre or in reception at Tranantorget for SEK 55. You can of course use/recharge existing key cards. All key card holders have free access to our activities: Sledge Evening, Kläppen Cup, Jr Park Session and all troll activities except for the Troll Safari. Children aged 0–7 go free of course, but don’t forget they need their own key cards. Photos are mandatory on ski passes covering more than three days. NB: Your ski pass is personal! Lost key cards will not be replaced. We will reimburse you for the remaining days on a lost ski pass if you have a receipt. Pedestrians and cross-country skiers must use Gondol Sälen. The chair lift is for downhill skiers only. The gondola is included in your cross-country track tag when you’re wearing it somewhere visible and carrying cross-country equipment. Celebrate new year from the summit or the foot of the mountain! Behold the giant torchlight parade winding down the mountainside. The evening is rounded off with fireworks.

WEEK 51

Swap the slush in town for Kläppen’s winter wonderland. Kläppen offers traditional Christmas celebrations with lots of snow and plenty of skiing.

SST AND SSS

The Swedish Snowboard Series (SSS) and Swedish Slopestyle Tour (SST) visit Kläppen Snow Park. The Swedish elite compete for slopestyle medals.

WEEK 11 Mazda Weekend at Kläppen for all Mazda owners and enthusiasts. Competitions, activities, plenty of skiing and, of course, new Mazda cars at Kläppen.

When Easter comes around, the days at Kläppen are long and light and the sun warms you up as you ski or sit in one of our restaurants. The days are also full to the brim with fun activities for all the family.

KLÄPPEN HIT N’ TURN

The Mini World Cup is a competition in association with the Swedish Ski Association for all of Sweden’s promising young people aged 11–12. It gives them a chance to compete and challenge others of the same age in the region.

FRIDAY–SATURDAY, WEEK 14

Our Kläppen Hit n’ turn competition will be taking place on Saturday, 7 April for the second year in a row. Kläppen Hit n’ turn is a banked slalom course extending from the upper part of Bäverdalen to the top of the Beckasinen lift.

CHINESE EASTER DOWNHILL

GOOD FRIDAY, 30 MARCH

The Chinese Easter Downhill is being held for the fourth year in a row. A family contest with a mass start (the youngest classes begin and complete half the course) from top to bottom.

SUNDAY, WEEK 14

The finale of a fantastic season. This competition is a “family and friends” kind of event. The course offers varied, fun terrain with long, delicate turns like a Super-G track.
