Welcome to Kläppen After a fantastic summer, we have longed that little bit more for an exquisite, sparkling winter with slightly lower temperatures. Of course, it's winter we live for and the feeling when the resort is teeming with guests is fantastic. Perhaps right now you're sitting on the sofa before your first day's skiing, with that tingling sensation of anticipation. There's a lot that needs to be achieved on holiday, but I'd like to mention the most important: Take it easy, enjoy and take the opportunity to spend time together with family or your travelling companions. Holidays are for rejuvenation, and skiing is a perfect way to recharge with new energy whilst moving the whole body. In Kläppen we want to create a calmer tempo for our guests – no queues at the lifts, plenty of room on the pistes and the whole family can ski together from the tops of all the slopes around the mountain, at different levels of difficulty, which is unique in Sweden. Just perfect for spending time together! We are constantly working on our development and have carried out several projects and investments this

year, you can read about some of them in the magazine. You will also get to know me and my family a little better. We're a skiing family, whose aim it is to create the perfect ski resort based on how we ourselves would want our holiday to be. Should you see something that could be improved or if you have any new ideas, as a rule, members of the family are at the resort and would be happy to discuss them with you. We are extremely proud of our resort and our fantastic staff. Last season we received a total of 5.4 points out of 6 in our guest questionnaire on how our guests view our resort. We also received three awards: "Sweden's best piste", "Sweden's best snow park" and "Sweden's best ski resort for families with children". As you are probably aware, we've been looking forward to this winter for some time, well ever since last winter! Have a really great winter holiday and once again, welcome! Kläppen at last! Is just how our guests feel when they put on their skis, peer into the sun and take a deep breath before several days of not having to think about anything other than really good skiing. Welcome to Kläppen Ski Resort – part of the Sälen mountains. Allow us to give you a quick tour.
8 Kläppen – Winter in Sälen 2018–2019
FACTS Kläppen Ski Resort nn Family-owned ski resort. nn 37 pistes. nn 21 lifts, of which one is a chair lift. nn Sälen's only gondola lift with 47 gondolas. nn Five cross-country tracks with a total length
of 39 kilometres. nn Sälen's longest slope, 3 kilometres.
SKIING IN FOUR DIRECTIONS The skiing is built around a mountain, where each slope has been well thought through. Some offer fantastic views, others soft carving where you can take a detour to a more challenging steep hill should you wish. At Kläppen, everyone can ski from the top and personally choose easy, challenging or somewhere in between and in the direction best suited to the moment.
nn Snow cannon system, capacity: 60 cubic
metres of snow per minute.
WE LIKE FAMILIES AND THEY LIKE US We commit ourselves to ensuring that both children and adults enjoy their visit to us. This is also how the Eriksson family runs Kläppen. The entire resort is designed with the needs of families with children in mind. Here you will find activities, the ski school and slopes that attract both young and not so young. Last season we were named Sweden's best family ski resort by Sweden's premier ski site, freeride.se.
SHORT DISTANCE In Kläppen, almost all cabins are ski in/ski out and with easy connection lifts that will take you wherever you want to go. It is easy to find your way around and you are never far from the restaurants, reception, the shops and slopes. In addition, there are rarely any lift queues. All this means more skiing time for you!
STAY CLOSE TO THE SKIING Kläppen is growing every year and there's a lot to choose from. Big, small, modern, personal, newly built and cosy. For small families and for several families and groups as well as conferences.
SWEDEN'S BEST SNOW GUARANTEE With our snow cannon system, we promise great skiing from the opening day. The guarantee includes 14 pistes from the start of the season on 14 December to closing on 22 April. The snow guarantee also applies to cross-country skiing from 23 November. Kläppen – Winter in Sälen 2018–2019 9
Do like 35,000 others, aim high! Enjoy the view, sit comfortably in the heated seats and take yourself to the top for yet another wonderful run. The gondola lift has been a great success at Kläppen! Here is the gondola in figures.
The journey takes 8 minutes from the valley to the top. It takes five minutes if you join the gondola at Tranantorget. Your hands and feet will love these minutes. Be sure to take a photo and post it on #kläppen. We also offer open network and free WiFi.
The lift has 47 gondolas. They mostly carry holiday-making snowboarders and alpine skiers, but also prams, ski school groups, those wanting a bite to eat as well as cross-country skiers. Skis and snowboards are stored in the smart compartment on the outside.
The gondola lift can carry 2,400 people per hour, which means that there won't be any long queues in Kläppen.
The cost of building the gondola lift amounted to SEK 90 million. A good investment.
10 Kläppen – Winter in Sälen 2018–2019
35,000 people rode the gondola lift last season. The gondolas offer outstanding safety, there is plenty of time to get on and off and there is always staff to ensure that everything works as it should.
35 000
New seating for 100 has been added in the rebuilt Toppstuga this season. Here you can relax with coffee and a pastry, have lunch and take a break. Toppstugan is the disembarking point for the gondola and offers magnificent views.
100
A gondola accommodates 10 people. This usually offers the opportunity for a pleasant chat and to make new acquaintances. Be sure to share your experiences and tips on the best slope. The spacious gondola also carries ski school children safely right up to the top.
When is Kläppen at its best? The short answer is: Each time! But perhaps certain periods are better suited to your wishes than others. Here we describe the season in brief.
CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR
For many of our Christmas and New Year guests, this is a tradition. Here is everything you associate with Christmas: Christmas buffet, Santa Claus and sparkling New Year celebrations. Tranantorget is decorated for Christmas and the landscape is just like a Christmas card. These holidays are quickly booked up and you need to book early.
MID SEASON
The period between Christmas and the winter break weeks in February and March is perfect for those wanting a little more peace and quiet. These weeks usually offer real winter with plenty of snow. Many couples and groups prefer these weeks, but even families with smaller children can find bargains in these extra favourable weeks. For the little ones there are ”Junior Days” packed with children's activities. It's easy to be a parent of young children in Kläppen. It's easy to get around with a pram and sledge. Excursions to the top without skis are fully possible, the gondola lift turns it into an adventure. The rest cabin is situated close to the children's area and is within walking distance of everything. In the children's area there is plenty for the little ones, with a massive snow hill, playground, snow escalator and snow carousel.
WINTER BREAK
During the winter break weeks in February and March, the pulse is somewhat raised at Kläppen. Children on holiday from school and young people top up with much needed energy and families escape their everyday lives for days of fresh mountain air and skiing. This time of the year the sky is light blue. It's easy to find your way in the lift system so you can safely let the children loose. As we have free WiFi, you can easily find each other via Facebook or some other app. Share your days with others by using #kläppen.
EARLY SPRING
When the sun shines, Tranantorget fills with sun loungers and reindeer skins, people lean back, smiling into the sun to the aroma of freshly brewed coffee, steaming mulled wine and charcoal-grilled hamburgers. The après ski moves out onto the outdoor stage and the atmosphere is merry. During Easter we celebrate that little bit extra with performances and Easter activities. With Kläppen snow you can count on good snow quality to the very last day of the season. Kläppen – Winter in Sälen 2018–2019 11
Kläppen by night The piste groomer's lights are bright. The pitch-black darkness disappears and gives way to a fantasy-filled idyll with snow-covered fir trees whose shadows evoke thoughts of elves and trolls deep in the forest. The ski landscape looks like an endless sea and the piste groomer is the ship threading its way forward across the expanses under a canopy of the most beautiful stars. Some days the Northern Lights spread out in a play of colour across the night sky. For Henrik and his team, it's a normal night's work. Music pumps out from the cab and they get ready for 35 hours, spread over three machines, of snow preparation for the following day. Every centimetre must be gone over, smoothed and levelled, while tacos are being prepared in the
12 Kläppen – Winter in Sälen 2018–2019
cabins and tired bodies crawl under the covers for a good night's sleep. Although the availability of natural snow is good, Kläppen's own snow is needed to create a foundation that lasts all season long and offers equally good conditions from the first to the last skiing day. It's all down to exactly the right amount of water from our own source mixed with just the right amount of air. A craft that Henrik and his colleagues have mastered fully. It's enough just to go out and sniff in order for him to feel how dry the air is and therefore know what kind of crystals he needs to make.
Fakta Piste Groomer • A piste groomer weighs up to 12 tonnes. • The dozer blade collects up the snow and evens it out. • The cutter breaks up densely packed lumps and banks of snow • The pressure mat creates the perfect snow surface we call corduroy. • All groomer operators are skilled skiers and snowboarders. • A GPS-system measures the snow's depth.
Kläppen – Winter in Sälen 2018–2019 13
Fakta Snow • Natural snow melts faster than artificial snow. • With Kläppen snow, snowballs become more compact and durable. • Kläppen snow can be laid down at the end of October and lasts the whole season. • The snow cannons produce 60 cubic metres/minute. • The Kläppen snow is also added to some of the cross-country tracks. • Last season the snow depth in the terrain was approximately 130 cm, on the pistes even more.
KLÄPPEN BY NIGHT BILD
14 Kläppen – Winter in Sälen 2018–2019
16 Kläppen – Winter in Sälen 2018–2019
The Eriksson family Kläppen presents:
The recipe for Kläppen is as simple as it is ingenious: "Experience your skiing holiday through the eyes of a skiing family". So what does this family with three children think?
Kläppen – Winter in Sälen 2018–2019 17
We can conclude that things are going well for Kläppen. Even before last season, Kläppen had written itself into history and last year exceeded expectations. This is what Kläppen's CEO Gustav Eriksson has to say about its success: "We had a fantastic winter, with an abundance of natural snow. There was an enormous interest in skiing. The high season weeks were fully booked early, and the winter's total occupancy was 90 % on average. Over the last two years, the number of skiing guests has increased by 25 %. The recipe for success is simple: Experience through the eyes of a family with children. Something that fully applies to the Eriksson family. With the latest addition, Iris, who is 12 months old, their children are aged 1, 10 and 12. Gustav and Lena, his wife, who works as HR Manager at the resort, active tourists visiting ski resorts both in Sweden and abroad. But not only that. Inspiration comes from a number of places. "Inspiration comes from the local genuine Dalarna environment, and is something which is close to our 18 Kläppen – Winter in Sälen 2018–2019
hearts. Other impressions are taken from other resorts where children are central, where there are wonderful environments that encourage play, character actors, food cooked from scratch and in addition, they care about the local environment", says Lena and continues: "The logistics are so very important. It should be easy to holiday with children. Toilets, changing tables, high chairs and playrooms are things that make it easier for families with children. It should be possible to relax knowing that the children are in ski school and to dare to allow the older ones to go off on their own without getting lost. These thoughts are with us all the time." Clearly, the term "bottlenecks" is a dirty word in Gustav's world. In order to develop as a resort, it is necessary to reduce queues and manage large numbers of people. "The paradox is that we want the resort to be full of people, but we want it to be perceived as spacious and easy to get around." Another factor for success is happiness. Everywhere, you meet smiling people all wearing Kläppen jackets.
Hanna works on the lift and the name tag reveals that she is from Motala, which is clear from her dialect when she wishes us a nice day. "Our staff is fantastic! You can't teach people to be nice, you have to have that attitude and we are good at recruitment. The Kläppen spirit must present itself immediately. Many of the people working at Kläppen return every year, so it's quite possible to get your own favourite ski instructor again," says Gustav on the way up in the ski lift. WHAT'S HAPPENING NOW?
"We have extended Toppstugan in order to be able to serve more guests and allow more people to enjoy the fantastic views. The influx of both resident and day guests in recent years also means that we have had to extend the parking facilities," says Gustav and then starts talking about his Troll plans with great enthusiasm: "We have built a ”Troll slope", a course just for the use of the little ones with mini-jumps, waves and little trolls
along the way. We are focusing on children and this is going to be a new thing. Even though the season is long and wonderful, many demands are placed on Kläppen as a resort: to have good pistes through to the end of April, to have activities for as many weeks as visitors want to visit Kläppen are challenges that they are committed to addressing. "There's a 'master plan' that extends further into the future and includes further expansion of skiing and development of the mountain, but we are proceeding slowly and making sure to take a step at a time and cut our coat according to our cloth. "Records are there to be broken, but you must have the ability to be satisfied and look at what you have created with pride." Gustav, who has a slope named after him at Lindvallen, has a whole mountain to manage, develop and fill with skiing. Father Per can be proud. He is still on the Board and although he's retired, he spends much of his time at the resort, where he and his wife Metta can be both eyes and ears and contribute with valuable input. Maybe it was 30 years ago or even longer since you went to ski school. Maybe it was last year! It doesn't matter, as long as you want to get the most out of your skiing there is always room for an extra course. To be satisfied with ”I can still make it down” is to devalue yourself, you can do better! Ski school isn't just for children, it is actually created for adults as well. "Above all, you gain an awareness of your skiing and are able to see what potential you actually have. Almost everyone discovers new sides to skiing," says Fredrik
Stenmalm, Sports Manager, who argues that it's more about coaching. "You become aware of the movements you use and can use. With a ski instructor coaching you, you progress faster and will notice a positive change that will make skiing easier and more enjoyable." Kläppen – Winter in Sälen 2018–2019 23

So welcome to the children's theatre every Tuesday and Friday. To see where Trolle & Trolla live, head into the Snow Realm and visit Trollstuggo. Jennie-Lee Burmansson KLÄPPEN PRESENTS:
Kläppen ambassador
36 Kläppen – Winter in Sälen 2018–2019
Jennie-Lee Burmansson started to compete in freestyle when she was eight years old. Seven years later, she was the youngest member ever of the Swedish winter Olympics team, in Pyeongchang, South Korea. She grew up in Lindvallen and put on her first pair of slalom skis at the age of two. And that was it. "We had about 50 metres to the slope. As soon as I got home from school, I had a quick bite eat and headed out onto the slopes," says Jennie-Lee. THE PARK OF PARKS
Jennie-Lee is now 16 and not only has she won the World Cup in slopestyle but also a bronze medal at the Winter X-games in Aspen and gold at the Big Air in the X-games in Oslo. Much of Jennie-Lee's success is obviously down to hard work and a great deal of talent, but Kläppen's Snowpark has played an important role. "The conditions here are the best for learning to ski well. When I learned to ski and do tricks it was all thanks
to Kläppen - they have the best snow park in Sweden, if not the world," says Jennie-Lee. "Here you get so much on a ride, and it only takes two minutes before you're back up again. The park is full of things to do, so you can be very creative and it's inspiring to see all the talented riders is in the park." But it's not only the snow park that makes Kläppen Jennie-Lee's favourite. It's the whole mountain, which offers such varied skiing, and the atmosphere on the slopes among both staff and skiers. No rush, just great, relaxed skiing. NEW CHALLENGES
Last autumn, Jennie-Lee started at the skiing gymnasium in Malung and will study there for four years, with plenty of time for skiing, training and competitions. She has known all her classmates for some time and gets the chance to develop her skiing together with them. Even though she has her sights set on the Olympic Games in Kläppen – Winter in Sälen 2018–2019 37
Beijing in 2022, her goal is to constantly hone her skills, and you do this by training and competing. "This winter the world championships is in the United States and I want to be there! And then there's the world cup again, X-Games and Dewtour," says Jennie-Lee. But for now, she will focus on school and more skiing in Kläppen. And the perfect day for skiing Jennie-Lee describes as follows: 38 Kläppen – Winter in Sälen 2018–2019
"It begins with an early start out on the slope, snow has fallen during the night and I take a few powder runs. I then go to the snow park which has been newly shaped and perfectly prepared. I shred there until lunch, which I eat at the Brasserie Karelius. After lunch I take a few regular runs before I'm back in the snow park for the rest of the day. It doesn't get better than that!"
MORNING SKI
Start the day with some wonderful skiing on freshly prepared slopes or fresh virgin snow before everyone else wakes up. We keep the Järpen chair lift open, with access to many untouched pistes. During the morning skiing you get the opportunity to try the latest skis from VÖLKL. We conclude the skiing session with breakfast at Toppstugan. Remember to book in time as availability is limited. s r e c n e u Infl share Paula Uribe Age: 27 år Lives: Stockholm, Älvsjö Family: Husband and two daughters, 5 and 3 Job: Influencer Best Kläppen tip: The best thing about Kläppen is that it feels familiar. Partly because of the short distances between the slopes but also the diversity of things to do. The ski school is fantastic, as is the Troll Safari. Wherever you turn, you look out over a beautiful winter landscape, but at the summit in Toppstugan... nothing can beat that view! We rather liked the Waffle House too! Last year was a first for us in Kläppen. We travelled with a four and a two year old. It was easy driving to Sälen from Stockholm and the girls felt that it was an adventure in itself, just sleeping in a cosy mountain cabin in a bunk bed. But I'd say the best thing about Kläppen is the feeling. The f amiliarity and the short distances. It suits us right now, with two little girls who are eager to learn to ski properly!

Sven Thorgren Age: 23 Lives: Monaco and has just bought a house near Kläppen! So psyched up! Family: Mother and Father. Four siblings! Job: Snowboarding professional Best Kläppen tip: Riding on a slushy day and slogging away in what I consider to be the best snow park in the world. If I'm not in a park mood, I'll just take laps in the gondola and slay the whole mountain with some great friends! I also have a weak spot for the potato pancakes and pork at Karelius!

Ola Lustig Age: 40 Lives: Stockholm Family: Bosse 5 Job: Presenter radio/pod Best Kläppen tip: My son, who just learned to swing turn, thinks that the coolest thing is to ride the gondola to the top and then take the Rådjursstigen down. We finish the ride on a few boxes in the Junior Snowpark and then immediately down to the children's area where we ride the Troll track. Then it's a high five and a cup of hot chocolate in the Waffle House!

Bingo Rimér
Age: 30 år Lives: Kungälv Family: Husband Robin Reinhold, daughters Hailey 7 and Chloe 3 Job: Influencer Best Kläppen tip: Try out all the restaurants at least once, regardless of whether you pop into the hamburger joint at the bottom of the piste or enjoy a fondue evening at the top, you will not be disappointed. Then you have to try out the gondola. Chloe, our little one, was so happy to get to ride all the way up and then slide down the green slope, it all worked. What I like about Kläppen is that the entire mountain is so well adapted for all ages. Whether you are a pro or a beginner, there are pistes suitable for you. We will definitely go back!

Age: 43 år Lives: Stockholm Family: Katrin, Erika, Nova, Ringo, Rambo, Falke och Alex Job: Entrepreneur, photographer, creator, Iron Man. Best Kläppen tip: Coming to Kläppen is a dream for the whole family. The whole setting is stunning, and I love the whole set-up of the resort where, after having played all day in the snowboard park, you end up down by the lifts with a hot dog in one hand and a cold beer in the other. Good Service. High quality skiing and great slopes. Fantastic food and the best waffles in the world. All this contributes to making Kläppen Sweden's absolute best ski resort in all categories.
