Registering Online

Our staff will assist employers in developing all aspects of a customized training program for a specific business. Assistance provided by KCC includes curriculum development, locating equipment and facilities.

You are required to complete a “MyKCC” account in order to register online, but it is a quick and easy process. If you have any trouble, call us at 541-880-2212. As always, paper registration forms are gladly accepted in Building 3 weekdays between 8 am and 5 pm.

Community Education Courses

Community Education courses are available to students ages 16 or older, unless otherwise stated, who are interested in pursuing a new hobby or pastime. Community Education provides fun classes that include special, personal, professional, hobby, and recreational interests, and some credit classes. Courses are offered throughout the community and we are rapidly expanding our offerings in many locations throughout Klamath County.

Workforce Education Courses

Workforce Education offers courses to adults interested in upgrading their work skills or exploring new areas of employment. Workforce Education courses include, but are not limited to, computer skills, management/leadership skills, languages and safety. We pride ourselves on developing courses to fit your organization.

The price for non-credit classes varies with each class and is published in the Community and Workforce Education Class Schedule each term. Payment is due before the first day of class.

Some courses may require additional fees for materials, certification or equipment.

Payment 1. The College accepts all traditional forms of payment including cash (U.S. dollars only), checks, MasterCard, VISA, Discover and debit cards.

2. Third-party payment arrangements are also acceptable, which include agency or company payment authorizations.

Note: It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that written third-party authorization is received by the College.

Refunds If the College cancels a class, students are entitled to a full refund of tuition and applicable fees. Students who drop a class, or classes, will be issued a refund based on the following criteria:

An Add/Drop form must be completed in order to process refunds. No refunds will be provided for withdrawals or drops after the drop deadlines shown above. Credit balances resulting from payments made by the third-party sponsors, financial aid or scholarships will be returned to the originator.

Please be aware of the drop deadlines for Community and Workforce Education classes. It is the responsibility of the student to drop the class, not the college or instructor to drop those who do not attend. You can secure the Add/Drop form in the lobby of Building 3. Any class not dropped or paid for by these deadlines will be subject to billing, late fees and/or collections.

Personal Interest 4th Annual Goat Education Day Come and join us for this all day FREE event! Learn about dairy goats, what they give us as farm animals, and how to care for dairy and all goats. Presented by the Klamath Basin Dairy Goat Association (KBDGA), this hands on clinic provides information about goat care, from clipping for show, hoof care, giving vaccines and more, as well as classroom topics concerning safe handling of milk and health issues for goats. The afternoon will be filled with topics that include: All about milk with Edena Huhmann. Cheese and lotion making with Becky. Daylong exhibitions, plus Q/A for spinning yarn from Mohair goat wool by Patty Bodnar, and goats for packing and exhibition by Gina Janelli and Jody Anderson. There will also be vendor booths, a silent auction, and raffles.

Intro to Stained Glass This hands-on class will teach you to design your own sun catcher, cut glass, solder, and finish.

Students should bring a design pattern to first class. Learn safety methods and tricks of the trade.

Instructor has 20-plus years of experience in stained glass. Two week advance registration is required for supply ordering.

Acrylics Enjoy the fun and versatility of acrylic painting! Learn the basics, experiment, and get creative. For many artist, the acrylic is the preferred paint to create museum-quality paintings. Acrylic paints can also be applied to many different surfaces and are excellent for decorating anything from craft items to furniture. This class will teach about tools, paints, color mixing, and creating textures.

We will explore the use of color and composition, the application of acrylics in the style of water colors, and the traditional style of painting with brush or palette knife on smooth or textured surfaces, which we will create. Please ask the Community Education department for a supply list.

Joys of Beading This class is perfect for both the beginner and the more advanced beader. The class covers color and design, basic earrings and bead stringing, peyote stitch, herringbone (twisted or straight), DNA chain, brick or Comanche stitch, etc. There are fun projects for advanced beaders as well.

Kombucha Brewing Learn all about kombucha and how to brew your own. This is not just a kombucha class, this is a change-your-life class. Detoxify your body and give it what it needs to feel great, lose weight, and be well. A $10 materials fee is payable to instructor.

Fresh & Fermented What if there was a food you could eat every day, in every meal that would amaze you with flavor while nurturing and healing your body? What if this food were inexpensive and simple to make?

And what if it were also essential to healthy digestion and helping you get the most out of the nutrients in the foods you eat?

This wondrous food exists! It’s good old-fashioned, raw-fermented vegetables. Celebrated by cultures around the world and integral to cuisines for thousands of years, this age-old foodpreserving technique is reclaiming its rightful place in kitchens today. Do It Yourself Small House Learn about affordable owner-built small homes. Topics covered include finding the right location, quality-of-life issues, creating floor plans for compact spaces, interior climate, budget, construction sequence, building materials, foundation and structure choices, weatherproofing, and pest problems.

Course is based on the holistic guidebook, Hut-Topia: How to Create Sustainable Small Homes and Homesteads. The book can be purchased from the KCC Bookstore or from the instructor on the first day of class. The student is expected to bring to class graph paper, pencil, eraser, tape measure, and calculator. Off-Grid Living Techniques Learn how to live off-grid with alternative sources for power, water, food, and heating. Topics covered include resource sizing, solar electric, solar hot water, solar space heating, solar cooking, wind power, hydro power, batteries, inverters, generators, potable water sources and storage, waste water, crops, livestock, food storage, burning appliances, propane and wood.

Ray Kristjan Poteet The Power of Physics-Rockets

KCC’s own Viking, Ray Kristjan Poteet, came to the United States all the way from Iceland. Poteet has been a KCC faculty member since 2011. He instructs a variety of Biology, Anatomy, Astronomy, Environmental Science and Health courses for the College. After growing up in California, he moved to Oregon in 1990 to peruse local business interests.

Poteet graduated from KCC and OIT. He is a nuclear medicine/PET-CT technologist, and former local fire training officer/EMT paramedic. Prior to moving to Oregon, he designed factories and built factory equipment for expandable polystyrene production, and other plastics industries. Poteet has been an active volunteer within Klamath County, participating in local government and the Blue Zones Project. He is always trying to travel outside the US, especially Brazil where he and his wife Raquel (also KCC faculty) own an apartment, or to anywhere he can go by RV, car, or motorcycle.

Alternative Fuel Technologies

Introduction to Astronomy and Telescopes; outdoors

Every day we hear about pollution, global warming, fuel shortages, and the rising costs of just putting fuel into our cars. We see people installing solar energy systems, and buying hybrid, or even electric cars. In this course, we will look at these simple energy alternatives, but we will also spend time with hands-on experiments using hydrogen fuel cell technology, and investigate just how efficient different engines, and fuel sources are. We will investigate the very simple, yet incredibly efficient Stirling engine, and discuss the potential of nuclear powered, radioactive Thorium as a potential energy source for our next generation of cars. We will experiment with the most abundant greenhouse gas, a gas we create through combustion, carbon dioxide, CO2. Does the use of ethanol as a fuel, or the burning of natural gas in a co-gen plant lower the emissions CO2? Find out for yourself.

In this course, you will learn about the basic parts, set-up, and collimation of computerized, and manual, reflector telescopes, of the type and size you might already own, or are wanting to purchase. We will practice the set-up, collimation, and use of programable telescope tracking devices, all while using our telescopes outside for at least two of the night to view our moon and the stars.

Bring a sweater/jacket -- we will be outside gaining hands-on experience with a Celestron Nexstar 130mm SLT Computerized Reflector Telescopes.

Beginning Birding This course provides a brief introduction about how to identify birds, how to use bincoulars and field guides, and the diversity of birds in the Klamath Basin. We will also talk briefly about helpful birding apps and ways to get involved in national community science efforts. We will see multiple photos of local birds. No prior experience necessary. An optional field trip to a location to be determined will be on the Saturday after the class.

Birding by Ear This course provides a brief introduction bird vocalizations, what birds are saying, and the incredible diversity of sounds and songs made by birds around North America. We will focus on songs of several common birds of the Klamath Basin. We’ll listen to recordings of bird songs during the course and talk about tips for learning songs. We’ll also see multiple photos of our local birds. No prior experience necessary. An optional field trip to Rocky Point/Upper Klamath National Wildlife Refuge will be on the Saturday after the class. Astronomy and Introduction to Telescope Technologies This course covers the basic design, function, and the use of various telescopes. From the massive, all-new FAST Radio Telescope in China to the largest refractor telescope ever built located at the Yerkes Observatory in Wisconsin. Our broad topics will cover both their designs, along with the pros and cons of each theory, and how you can choose your own personal telescope. We will also discuss, and demonstrate through experimentation, astronomical topics such as the huge distances in outer space, the speed of light, and communication dilemmas encountered as we attempt to see through it. Reflector telescopes will be available for classroom discussions.

In Search of Extra Terrestrials; could there be life out there?

Could there really be life somewhere besides on planet Earth? What type of life might that be?

What conditions are required for life as we know it? What about intelligent life? Why after all the years of looking haven’t we been able to find and communicate with alien life forms? In this course, we will investigate some of the ways we are trying to define the types of life forms we should be looking for, including intelligent life forms. We will investigate the problems with such vast distances between us, and possible locations that might be able to support life. We will also discuss the likelihood of finding any type of life through the use of the Drake Equation.

The power of Physics-Rockets, and Trajectory Basics Physics, just the word generates visions of pages filled with very difficult looking math. But in this Community Education lab, there is no need, or expectations of all that math. Instead, we will investigate rocket trajectories, through hands-on experiments, where learning is mixed with outdoor fun. In this lab, we will look at the power of water, and compressed air to launch water rockets. Then, we will learn through outdoor fun, about rocket power, and launch trajectories using Potassium Nitrate powered rockets. Yes, you get to assemble, and launch, real outdoor rockets while attempting to calculate their flight altitude. Bring your smile, you’re going to need it.

Biotechnology – DNA; Crime Scene Resolution Through DNA, and Restrictions Enzyme Technology with Gel Electrophoresis You’ve seen it on TV, and in the movies. Crime Scene Investigation, or CSI, is a rapidly changing, and highly technical field. More and more, crimes are being solved in the Laboratory using DNA evidence. Now you can come into our Biology Lab, and learn through a hands-on lab experiment just how it all works. Help us to identify the bad-guy in our mock crime investigation. We will gather DNA samples, and by using Restriction Enzyme technology, and Gel-Electrophoresis, we will search out the perpetrator. This is cutting-edge science, and the high-end in crime scene investigations. Now you can come in to our BIO Lab, and do it yourself.

Public Speaking - An introduction to taking stage In this class we will craft and perform speeches on topics that are relevant to your life. Expert guidance will give you the confidence to share to a group of two or two hundred. Topics addressed will include: Overcoming Microphonophobia - How to be comfortable with the great equalizer and Standing in Your Truth - How to get your amazing ideas out of your head and on to the soapbox.

Poetry - An introduction to writing your truth In this class we will explore the classics of poetry and how to capture your own essence in a form of poetry that expresses you. Every class will include a writing prompt that will be explored through poetry. The goal of this class is to create a means of expression that will sustain your creative self. By the end of the term you will have met the poet within you and be comfortable sharing with others. Materials fee: $20 to be paid to instructor on the first day of class.

Drone Training in preparation for FAA Remote Pilot Certification allowing you to utilize your drone for commercial use Training session consists of 2 days of intensive training with an FAA Certified Instructor. 1st day consists of training in a classroom setting where you will learn about drone regulations, airspace, weather, and all pertinent information which will prepare you for a computerized exam administered by a separate testing center. 2nd day will be a quick overview of the first day with Q&A session followed by scenario based training where the Instructor provides two scenarios in which all attendees are guided step by step through the entire process. All books and binder will be provided for each attendee in addition to locations of testing centers in close proximity to the college. This training session will provide you with the knowledge required to take FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot knowledge test and allow you to use your drone for commercial use and is ideal for individuals and businesses.

Computer Minecraft Designers If you love the game Minecraft, but always wanted to design your own characters and buildings for your games, this class is for you! Learn the basics of creating 3D models using a new software to design your own objects, create skins for characters, and import them into your favorite Minecraft games. To access projects at home, students must own a PC/MAC version of Minecraft.

Tablet, phone, and game console version of Minecraft are not compatible. Parent email address is required to use 3D modeling software. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program.

Make Your First Video Game If you love playing video games, this is the camp for you! Make your first video game in this oneof-a-kind class that shows you the keys to designing your first 2D platformer game. Conceptualization, play experience, challenge levels, graphics, sounds, and simple coding are just some of the concepts that will be explored. No prior experience necessary, just a desire to have fun. Studentcreated games will be available on a password protected BlackRocket website to share with friends and family. Games are only compatible on PC computers. Mac versions can be created after the program for $15 conversion fee. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program.

Game Labs For serious gamers only! Beyond 2D and 3D, now it’s time to take it to another level by competing with the world! Students will develop games with a partner using a unique game engine.

Maker Labs Calling all boys and girls who want to be the designers of the future! In this class if you can dream it, you can make it - create your first action figure, design custom jewelry, or make a new toy, learn how to prepare a model for 3D printing, and create a design portfolio to showcase your work.

Using professional-level modeling software, kids will sculpt, texture, and render their own 3D creation. No prior experience is necessary and 3D designs will be available on a password protected BlackRocket website to share with friends and family.

Basic Computer This class is for anyone who needs to learn basic computer skills. Safety Motorcycle Rider - Basic Motorcycle and Scooter Class KCC motorcycle courses are offered in cooperation with TEAM OREGON, a nationally recognized leader in motorcycle rider safety and skills training. TEAM OREGON offers courses for riders of all ability levels. You can learn to ride, earn your motorcycle endorsement, or take your skills to the next level. The course instruction and coaching will help you to ride safer, smarter and more skillfully.

Drivers Education - High School This course is designed to meet all Oregon state requirements for high school driver education.

Thirty hours of classroom instruction, six hours of behind-the-wheel driving and six hours of in-car observation are required to pass the course. To register, pick up the Driver Training Registration packet at KCC Community Education and make payment at registration.

AARP Smart Driver Training This refresher course is offered by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP). AARP members can improve their driving skills and develop defensive driving techniques in this participatory course. The course takes into consideration the physical changes of the maturing driver and ways to compensate for these changes. Most major insurance companies allow an auto insurance discount for drivers 55 years and older who complete this course. A certificate of completion is issued and advanced registration is required. A fee of $20 is due to the instructor on the first day of the class. AARP members receive a $5 discount when they provide their membership number on the first day of class. Boat Safety All Oregon boaters 12 and older must pass an Oregon boaters education course and carry a boater education card when operating power boats greater than 10 horsepower. Students who pass this course can apply for a boater education card as required by Oregon’s mandatory boater education program. This course covers practical boating safety information and regional and local boating rules and regulations, as well as tips and techniques for making boating more enjoyable. Those who successfully complete this course are issued a certificate of completion, which is the first step in obtaining a boater education card. You will need to fill out an official application form, and send it into the Marine Board along with $10 and a copy of your certificate of completion to obtain your boater education card. Energy Medicine for Anyone with Pain Pain is the language our body speaks to forcefully get our attention and get us to stop what we are doing. If we ignore pain, like a child, it gets louder and louder, until we finally hear, listen, and respond. In energy medicine, pain is often characterized by congested energy in a particular area of the body. By getting the energy to move, pain is usually reduced and often even eliminated. In this experiential class, you will learn a minimum of 10 techniques that you can use on yourself and others to address localized, diffused, and traveling pain, including a gentle technique that uses the same energy system as acupuncture, but without the needles.

Workforce Development Flagger & Work Zone Traffic Control Flagger and Work Zone Traffic Control covers the fundamental principles of traffic control, the five parts of temporary traffic control zones, and regulations regarding the primary traffic control devices and their proper placement. OSHA 10 General Industry This 10-hour OSHA course will provide the basics of occupational safety and health. This is a 20-week program that consists of classes three days per week for a total of 110 classroom hours. In addition, each student will be required to complete 90 externship hours in a clinical setting.

Dental Assisting

The KCC Introduction to Dental Assisting course will prepare candidates for both the Dental Assisting National Board Exam and the ability to work chairside in the dental office. Students can expect a hybrid online and in-person class that will allow flexibility for students to extern at local dental offices. The curriculum will focus heavily on the clinical applications of dentistry. Classes will be interactive and students are expected to participate in clinical discussions and presentations.

Phlebotomy

The focus of this course is on acquiring proficiency needed to carry out successful blood draw and specimen processing for the purpose of clinical laboratory analysis in preparation for national certification. Principles of communication, quality control, safety, and caring interventions will be included. At the end of this class students will be ready to test for their AMT or NHA certification.
