Senior Project Portfolio
University of Wisconsin-Stout

Hello, I’m Klair,
Currently, I’m a senior studying at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, which is accredited by CIDA, and I anticipate graduating in Spring 2025. I am dedicated and strive to design spaces that prioritize the needs of users. I am eager to learn and further develop my skills as a designer.
In addition to my design work, I serve as the public relations officer for our Student Interior Design Organization on campus.
Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with friends and family, cooking new meals, and traveling. I love being outdoors, whether it’s walking, boating, or hiking.
Best regards,
Klair Hanson
Project Overview
The Rock community church design aims to create a welcoming atmosphere that fosters a sense of community and connection. It will feature light and airy colors to evoke a feeling of inclusion, along with natural elements that connect to the surrounding landscape, highlighting God’s creation. As guests enter the space, they will be greeted by an open concept that incorporates large windows, allowing natural daylight to flood in and contribute to an inviting atmosphere. Comfortable seating with modular furniture will enhance connections among congregation members and support moments of reflection. A central café will offer beverages and baked goods, accompanied by a nearby lounge area where guests can enjoy their morning comfortably. The flexible lounge space will encourage guests to relax by the fireplace after the service, promoting a sense of belonging.

SUSTAINABLE GOALS
WELL
BUILDING STANDARD
FUNCTIONAL GOALS
In the lobby, include tall ceilings and lots of windows for natural daylighting to create a welcoming and open environment.
1. Kids Zone will have separate restrooms and use playful colors to make it more engaging and exciting.
2. Wide aisles in the worship space to accommodate wheelchair users.
3. The Café will have long counter space and low counters for ADA nearby seating will help develop relationships among church families.
5.
4. The worship area will use comfortable, easily movable seating, acoustics in the ceiling and walls, and carpeted flooring. The stage will incorporate wood to create a focal point for the viewers.
AESTHETIC GOALS
The lobby will be bright and airy with high ceilings to create an open and welcoming environment.
1. Worship space will be a comforting and safe place for vulnerability, a darker space for intimacy.
2. The café uses warm wood tones and an open concept to encourage community and connecting with others.
5.
3. The children's ministry should be playful, colorful, and interactive. 4. Similar woods, paints, and flooring materials will be seen throughout the space, creating cohesion.
C09: New Mother Support
To support any new mothers visiting the church, there will be a lactation room to advocate for breastfeeding.
M02: Nature and Place
To connect guests with nature, plants, large windows, and materials representing nature will be incorporated.
A02: Smoke-Free Environment
Being an indoor facility, smoking will be permitted indoor and outdoor within the boundaries of the property. This includes the use of e-cigarettes as well. Proper signage will ensure guests understand the regulations.
N09: Special Diets
Food that is provided in the café will make sure that a wide array of options are available for those with dietary restrictions, food allergies, or intolerances. This will be distinguished with a label for easy legibility.
L05:
Daylight Design Strategies
The lighting used in the lobby area of the church will be supplied by large windows that will bring in lots of daylight to connect guests with the outdoors and decrease the amount of artificial light needed.

Sanctuary Entrance
Upon entering the sanctuary, guests are greeted with a large cross which frames the doorway, signifying a commitment to God.

Kids Corridor
The kids’ ministry is a vibrant, nurturing space where children learn about faith through activities, interactive lessons, and guidance. It fosters spiritual growth and a sense of community.

Personal growth requires reflection and one-on-one time with God. The acoustical trellis helps to reduce the noise levels, and comfortable lounge seating is placed all around. Along the windows, reads the church’s mission: connect, grow, and serve.

Adjacent to the lobby, cafes are important for encouraging community and are great spaces for people to connect with other church members.
