01 ABOUT ME I am currently a fifth year student in the five year NAAB accredited Kansas State University program to inquire a Masters of Architecture. Prior to coming to Kansas State University, I had the opportunity to take drafting, construction, and architectural courses.

Architecture has always been an interest of mine. Architecture is creating a space where people have an experience. It is an expression in built form that changes society in a positive way. The interesting thing about architecture is the ability to decided how a person might feel in the space or what their focus may be on.

In the selected projects I have studied how to make an abstract thought that caters to the society in built form.

02 ST. LOUIS BREWERY The St. Louis Brewery is located in Central West End district.

This brewery is the new social hub of this community. The brewery is in a high pedestrian neighborhood that promotes walkability.

The concept of speed dating but for beer came about because of the young social group in the area. The participants will be able to try out many of the on tap beers and specials before entering into the tasting room or beer garden. This is a creative way to get the community involved in the new social hub of the Central West End. For this project, I started by creating inspirational art pieces that were inspired by the brewing process and St. Louis.

Examples of this art is shown to the right. For the majority of this project I worked mostly in model to get a sense spatial awareness.

ABOUT THE SITE

SITE ANALYSIS The site is located on South Boyle Street in the Central West End district of St. Louis, Missouri. The St. Louis Brewery is in the center of two universities, Saint Louis University and Washington University. These universities are on either sides of Forest Park where the location of the1904 Worlds Fair was held. Overall, the context surrounding the site is residential making this a prime location for the community gather.

DIAGRAMS SPEED BAR The speed bar is the first space people will encounter when entering the brewery. Participants will be able to speed taste beers that are on tap or any specials before entering into the tasting room.

TASTING ROOM The tasting room is the main room for the brewery. In this space, people are able to relax and enjoy their selected beer. They are able to look out into the beer garden or into the production area.

INTIMATE SPACE The intimate space is a smaller more private area above the tasting room that includes a private beer garden.

People are able to have a bird eyes view of the production area and the main beer garden. This gives people a different perspective of the brewery.

BEER GARDEN The main beer garden is an interactive space where people are able to play yard games or enjoy the outdoors. The space opens up into the tasting room creating one space. The beer gardens has a view into the production area.

PRODUCTION The production area is able to be viewed by the tasting room, intimate space, and beer garden.

This is where the beer is produced in the five different barrels. It was important for participants to be able to view how beer is made. This makes it interactive for guests.

SERVICE The service area includes the pantry, freight elevator, offices, and mechanical rooms.

MODEL PROCESS MODEL For the begin of the project it was important to use a 16th scale site model to start making possible massing options for the site.

PROCESS MODEL A big part of our site was that there was a six foot slop along the length of the site. Figuring out how to place the mass became a challenge.

SPEED BAR Once massing was decided, I moved into 8th scale model to get a better sense of spatial awareness. Working in a bigger scale helped me learn what it felt like to be in the space.

PRODUCTION VIEW Once the floor plan had developed, adding thickness and small details began to develop.

ENTRANCE The entrance of the brewery was placed on the lower part of the site. Pushing the facade of the structure back allowed for an elevated pathway to connect everything together.

INTIMATE PROCESS The intimate space was a difficult to place within the building. At first it was behind the bar but it was moved to the second floor with a personal beer garden attached.

03 IRWIN UNION BANK The Irwin Union Bank is located in Kansas City, Missouri. The bank is designed to bring the community back together. This location is still in a segregated part of Kansas City along Troost Ave. The Irwin Union Bank is attached to a community room that is open 24 hours 7 days a week. To bring back some revenue to the neighborhood a retail space was added on the west side of the site and can be rented out by potential users.

The Irwin Union Bank was built onto an abandoned lot. Cleaning up the neighborhood, bringing the community jobs, and developing usable space was the main goal.

SITE ANALYSIS The site is located on Troost Ave and Linwood Blvd in Kansas City, MO. It was challenging to figure out how traffic was going to move through the site for the banks drive thru. Because most of the surrounding buildings were abandoned and ran down, it was a goal to start the move to clean up the neighborhood and bring the community together.

SERVICE The service wraps the back side of the structure.

It holds the offices and teller booths for the bank.

As well as any other back of house items needed for the retail space.

THE ‘JEWEL’ The ‘Jewel’ is the three main spaces consisting of the banking hall, retail space, and community room. I refer it to the ‘jewel’ because the spaces are wrapped in glazing.

STREET FRONT The street front was important to this neighborhood. Most of the surrounding building are all pushed to the street. This was a major factor in considering the massing for the structure.

By doing this, I was able to fit parking behind the retail space.

During the fourth year at Kansas State University, I was able to create construction documents. This gave me the opportunity to dive deeper in the layers and details of the building. I studied how the roof system, HVAC, facades, and ground connection all worked together to make one building. Above is a 3-D wall section with details of the glazing system.

DETAILS GROUND CONNECTION I created a seamless connection between the ground and exterior wall by having the glazing slide past the ground line. The glazing slides into a enclosed space with proper drainage and thermal breaks.

CORNER CONNECTION For the corner, I chose to leave the column exposed. By doing this it added another level detail to the building. The mullions are given the same depth as the columns creating a space for ventilation purposes.

04 HAND DRAFTING I started learning basic drafting skills in the seventh grade. After continuing my education at Kansas State, my skills in line weight, plan, section, elevations, and axon drawings.

In this section there will be examples on render perspective and plans from a few hand drafted project that I completed in my second year.

The render to the right was a photorealism project. I picked to do the University of Aberdeen’s Library done

by Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects. I felt the building gave a great contract to do a line drawing with charcoal rending on top.

EGYPTOLOGY STUDY The egyptology study was designed for an archaeologist who needed a space that they could work on their research and also display artifacts. The site was on the top of a 100 ft cliff looking down on a river. The concept for the design was verticality. When given two large limestone blocks, I cut one in half and placed them with their longest side pointing up. The spaces are then connected by the last limestone block laying on its side. By carving into the limestone blocks, I was able to create a study, display, and service spaces. The use of long vertical windows were used to help guide the light in without affecting the artifacts.

BRIDGE PROJECT This bridge project was designed for Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera residence in Mexico. Frida lived in one structure and Diego lived in the other. There was a need for a bridge to connect them. The concept behind the project is to reflect the relationship these two had. They had a twisted type of love that was private between the two. The bridge reflects that by twisting of the cables that wraps around the glass bridge.

STUDENT LOUNGE

The student lounge is a charcoal drawing that I did in my high school drawing one class. This was an assignment aimed for working on our perspective drafting skills and the use of charcoal to hand render on top. This piece was entered into the Fort Hays State Art Fair and won gold overall.

05 STUDY ABROAD I had the amazing opportunity to study abroad in Orvieto, Italy in the spring of 2019.

Kansas State University hasw established a small college in Italy for students and professor to attend. I went with 30 students and 2 professors.

Over the course of four months we were able to visit all areas of Italy. I enjoyed adsorbing the cultural by living in apartments, shopping at local markets, and enjoying all the wonderful food and wine Italy had to offer.

While there we study and experienced ancient architecture. We visited cities ranging from Southern Italy to Northern Italy. I also had the opportunity to do some independent travels to Spain.

SKETCHING TREVISO, ITALY When traveling in northern Italy, I stopped and visited the Brion Cemetery designed

by Carlo Scarpa. This was design to help people go through the grieving process by creating a progression through out the space that leads into a chapel, burials, and a reflection pool. Behind the abstract stairs shown in the sketch is a structure where the Brion family is buried.

ANACAPRI, ITALY On my trip down to the Mafia Coast, I visited a beautiful island of Capri, Italy. Villa San Michele was one of my favorite villa’s that I visited during my study abroad journey. It was filled with beautiful gardens looking out into the blue ocean. The villa weaved on the cliff side creating a wondering oasis.

MILAN, ITALY Milan was a fascinating city because of the combination of ancient history and modern architecture. Milan showed great examples of new and adaptive structures. This twisting tower was designed by Zaha Hadid. It is Built in the City of Life District.

TORRO DEL MORO My first project while studying abroad was to find a historic monument within Orvito, Italy and study the structure and history. Working on side of Blake Ellis, we decided on Torro del Moro.

Torro del Moro was built in the 13th century but was not named until the16th century. This tower has become important to the community. This is shown through examination of its height, historical significance, change in use over time, and analyzing how and why it is a central meeting hub.

The tower once was a watch tower to protect the town now it is central meeting hub. The evaluation and adaptive change over time is seen with each addition. The growth in the height, adding of bells, and adding of the clock are all apart of the rich history of Torro del Moro.

PIAZZA IPPOLITO SCALZA Our second project was to find an abandoned space within Orvieto, Italy.

The goal is to revive the space that the community could use. The space that I choose was Piazza Ippolito Scalza.

Piazza Ippolito Scalza is surrounded

by Liceo Classical High School. This high school focus on classical studies of humanities and social studies.

I wanted to create a place of social gathering that encourages a positive social environment for this piazza. This will help create a bridge between generations by providing a place for the locals to gather. This space will be simple and accessible to all. I designed for the people and user experience as well as highlight characteristics of the surrounding building.
