2017 Eclipse A once-in-a-lifetime solar eclipse will take place on Aug. 21 and will be visible in totality in southwestern North Carolina. Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to travel to southwestern North Carolina to view the event, and possibly millions will travel through North Carolina. Because heavy traffic is expected, NCDOT advises that drivers; Arrive early. Plan ahead, know where you want experience the eclipse and make arrangements now. Stay in place. Enjoy the natural show in a specific spot. Make sure that spot is a safe location, like a parking lot or rest area — not the side of a road. Leave Late.
