The mirrors of his chosen item of furniture capture the image of the viewer in relation with the surrounding world, guiding it back towards a state of contemplation and equanimity.

Fortune cookie (2019) by Marios Voutsinas refocuses our gaze towards a deconstructed spatial and emotive act. A tower block of domestic detritus mainly consisting of original period picture frames, pronounces an intense yet disintegrating human social activity, impregnating a faceless intruder whose attempt to gradually expand within the artist’s imaginary space is rendered by means of illumination. The perforated structure crudely manifests an esoteric emptiness and emotional desolation, juxtaposed against a latent threat ready to gently conquer and disturb an unstable and self-collapsing status quo.

Betty Zerva’s site-specific intervention 6.7km (2019) borrows its title from the perimeter size of Kypseli, which also defines its boundaries from the other contiguous districts of Athens. Using cotton thread to painstakingly wrap all wrought-iron railings from the main balcony of the Zarifi residence, Zerva signifies the fundamental need to repair and reinstate the wounded bodies of the buildings. The innumerable amount of time that was spent to complete this process reaches a level of meditational interaction between the artist, the building and the surrounding urban realm. Interlinking the balcony of the house with a Kypselian’s balcony across the street whose hobby is to cultivate silkworms (like many other residents of old Kypseli) enunciates the bridging between old and new and the re-introduction of the Kypseli of the past to that of today.
