PROJECT PROMPT

In this architecture studio, I was tasked in creating a comprehensive design project focused on re-ima retirees, and individuals with empty nests, all within close proximity to Downtown. Emphasizing a pe the site’s adjacency to the Kansas River and recreational areas, I wanted to create a public space th would be added to the site to enhance connectivity to the Levee trail and parks on the opposite riv project focusing on lower-level aspects such as accessibility, parking, public spaces, and commercial coordination within design teams is emphasized throughout the semester to ensure a cohesive ove 6

agining the North Lawrence site. The project aims to integrate a diverse range of housing options, catering to young professionals, edestrian-oriented redevelopment, I was asked to incorporate retail and dining options to redefine the urban context. Recognizing hat acts as a central focal point, facilitating accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists. Additionally, a pedestrian-friendly bridge verbank, fostering increased walkability in the Downtown area. The studio was structured in two phases: a collaborative team l zones, follow1ed by an individual project where students will design residential buildings and spatial configurations. After studying the nearby walkable amenities (or lack there of) of the site, the next logical step was to research current successful socio-economic areas nearby. When looking at GPS data of where consumers were traveling to, a direct correlation between popularity/success and the overall diversity of stores was observed. The most used and diverse areas were identified as centrales and studies were taken to see what needed to be brought into the North Lawrence site in order to make that Lawrence’s newest centrale.

In order to create a structure where the facade was constantly seeming to push or pull, each individual unit was designed to fit a different depth. The 1 bedroom is 40 ft deep, 2A Bedroom is 35 ft, 2B and 3 Bedroom are 30 ft, and the 4 Bedroom unit is only 25 ft deep. This change in depth allowed more design choices than just a faced that pushes and pulls. Another key feature of this layout is that it allows each unit to include a balcony. The last design choice that was made in tandem with the changing depths was made in order to bring in as much sunlight as possible to the living spaces of each unit. In order to get the required square footage for more people to live inLevel the same space at a shorter depth, a wider design is needed. PROJECT PROMPT

The assignment for this project was to create a artist in residence museum on the campus of the offices, a museum space, and a performance center as well all the storage and mechanical space eye-catching piece of architecture to be the first structure on seen on Jayhawk Boulevard, as well overhang. One of the design elements that I wanted to be sure to include from the preliminary and red terracotta roofs. I wanted this structure to stand out while still looking like it belonged, red element from the roofs to eye-level. I decided to have the raised element be wrapped in a lim 14

e University of Kansas. The program for this project included four artist studios, four sound recording studios, a lobby with that would be needed to make the structure operational. My design uses a lifted curved element to both create a dynamic l as allow for pedestrian space to be preserved. This also allowed for a nice patio resting area to be located underneath the design phases was to use the same materials found commonly around the campus of the University of Kansas, limestone so I decided to switch the placement and emphasis of the materials. I used a Terreal Terracotta Rainscreen to bring in the mestone clad to bring a sense of familiarity to what could be classified as a very bold piece of architecture for the campus.

A form with slight curve was created to both play off of the fountain and allow the structure to stand out from the buildings near it.

I wanted to retain as much of the open space used for pedestrian traffic as possible. This lead me to elevating my original form above the grade.

In order to add a sense of place and views of the surroundings, I added large cuts to walls facing down the center of the boulevard as well as the Chi-O Fountain and Campanile.

Structural support is extruded from the bottom that both allows for more space for the art studios as well as creates a look of asymmetry in the building.

In order to account for the large areas to be used for art exhibition, the back of the building is extruded.

Design Inspirations The main inspiration of this project was to mimic the curve in the roundabout across the street, creating a dynamic element. The second source of inspiration came from sitting and studying the site. I wanted to preserve all of the areas that were so commonly used for pedestrian traffic. This was achieved by raising the curved element and creating a courtyard underneath. The monumental staircase was a great design opportunity. Adding a elevator directly into the lobby next to it was a very efficient way to make it ADA accessible.

The first step of this project was to go out and survey the site in groups of four, finding any relevant features or history that could be useful when designing the concept for our structure. We used this information to create the 40”x 60” presentation shown here on the left. The secondary portion of my building is a coffee shop with a rooftop dining area. One of my ideas to connect both the residents of the arts district as well as the pedestrians on their way downtown was to include a communal art mural on the front facade of the building. Artists could come at any time to express themselves on the front wall of this building. I soon realized that this wasn’t just a space to look at art, but to make it. I then added both a outdoor community art studio as well as an indoor studio with a garage door for an open-air option.

After going to the site, I was taken away by the extensive views the wetlands had to offer. I knew I wanted to design a structure with a 360o viewing platform to compliment them. I then found inspiration in a small, personal lily pad pond that I’d eventually claim to be my site. My original idea was to creating a lily pad shaped viewing platform where the rest stop would be located with a lotus flower on top to provide shade.

my first few study models, I realized y design inspired by the lily pad tus flower provided a form to my re, but lacked function. My solution was to offset each of the petals so e petals themselves would be stairs gher viewing level.

The last change I made to my initial design was to make the higher viewing level a stargazing area. The petals of the lotus flower would be padded and reclined so that visitors could come and lay back in order to naturally look at the stars above.

In 2023, I was a part of a team working in Professor Chad Krause’s Dirt Works Studio. Together we designed and built a net-zero energy tiny house. This studio has helped me in more ways than I can imagine as it allowed me to learn about and participate in the building of a house. I am extremely grateful for this opportunity as a third-year student because I know very few schools, if any allow juniors to work on a project of this scale and complexity. The project went on to be recognized in a national competition because of the effective use of passive design strategies that allow the house to produce more energy than it uses.

This past two summers, I was lucky enough to receive an architectural internship at Mainline Group Architecture, Inc. in St. Louis, Missouri. Over the summers I did many construction documents such as floor plans, reflected ceiling plans, site and setback plans, etc. as well as a lot of 3D modeling. I worked on a range of projects from small-scale commercial to townhouse developments to fitness centers.My favorite project of the summer was working a restore and renovation of a Leonardo Bernoudi house. It was challenging to make the house efficient for our client’s family while keeping the original historic design alive, but the challenge is what made the project so interesting to me.
