Social Media - General Dos and Don’ts

Don’t

Don’t take random images from Google

• Not all images are for free use.

• If found, some images could result in a copyright lawsuit.

Don’t post bad photos

• No pixelated or small images.

• Don’t post unflattering images.

• Look at the background, inappropriate t-shirts, overflowing trash cans, etc.

• Don’t post anything with watermarks.

• Don’t overuse filters.

Don’t post screenshots

• The quality will be low.

• Use our Canva templates instead and remember to download the files!

Don’t post too much

• Somewhere between 1-4 posts and day is fine but remember your audience doesn’t want to be spammed.

Don’t ask people to follow you back

• It’s generally off-putting after following another account to ask for someone to follow you back.

Don’t abuse hashtags

• Use hashtags that are relevant to your post.

• Place hashtags at the end of your post for viewers to easily focus on your message.

Don’t overuse direct messaging

• Use direct messaging to answer in-depth questions.

• Overusing it may make followers uncomfortable.

Don’t focus on likes

• Focus on engagement instead!

• Ask your audience questions, be authentic, have fun.

Social Media - General Dos and Don’ts

Do

Do be consistent

• Follow a schedule to post regularly.

• Have posts generally follow a theme and color scheme (see branding guidelines).

Do share accurate information

• If you’re unsure check before posting!

• Your audience will appreciate accurate information.

Do use videos.

• Videos gain much more attention than regular posts, use this to your advantage.

Do use carousel posts.

• Instagram allows you to post many images at once in a carousel post. Do this instead of collages.

Do post vertically

• On Instagram and Facebook vertical images and videos work very well with mobile formats.

Do redirect towards our bio

• On Instagram no links can be posted in the comments. Mention our bio instead.

Do use Highlights and Stories

• Both Facebook and Instagram have stories, use these to direct people to your main posts.

• Stories are also a great opportunity to show Behind the Scenes content.

• Stories can also be used for polls and quizzes to boost interaction.

Do mention and re-share posts

• If someone shares a post with our hashtag repost it!

• If someone tags us, repost it!

• Also tag the relevant people when appropriate.

Do use emojis

• Posts with emojis catch people’s attention and appear friendly.

• Use relevant emojis when possible, but don’t use too many either.

Do use analytics

• Look at analytics to determine what kind of posts are creating the most user interaction.

Social Media - Caption Tips

Tips

• Make the first line the most important.

• Always include a call to action (i.e., a website, venue, hashtag, product).

• Write similar to how you speak. Casual language is more appropriate for social media.

• Be detailed, paint a picture with your words.

• Some posts don’t need to be promotional, just interactive.

Examples of calls to action

• Click the link in bio.

• Leave a comment, (usually the answer to a question).

• Tag a friend!

• Post a photo using our hashtag
