TH E HOU S E Typically, good things take time, and that’s exactly the approach Ed and Patti Minkina took when building their beachfront home. Ed and Patti purchased their rather large lot on Gulf Shores’ West Beach Boulevard in 2000 and waited a few years to start the building process of the 3,350-plus square foot home. “We were building our primary residence, not just a typical beach house,” says Ed. “We wanted to take time to design a home that fit all of our needs and maximized the incredible ocean views.”

The couple took a hands-on approach, working with renowned Gulf Shores builder Denny Blume to make sure the three-level, four bedroom three bathroom home more than succeeded in meeting both of those goals. A wall of windows on the back of the house provides optimum views of the property’s 77 square feet of private gulf front from all of the main living areas, while the windows on the front of the house offer views of Little Lagoon across the street. “Practically anywhere you are in the house, there is a water view,” Ed says. “That’s one of our favorite features about the property.”

With beachfront location and water views, Ed and Patti also made sure the home included plenty of custom features. The first level, which houses a completely enclosed three car garage (a spot that also provides plenty of storage options for sandy beach gear), also features a barbecue area and outdoor shower. From the first floor a circular maple staircase winds its way up to the second and third floors. The second floor—the main living area of the home—stuns with two-story vaulted ceilings, a gas burning fireplace, an open kitchen, and even a music room. Just upstairs on the third floor, the master suite can open up to the second floor with hidden sliding doors or be closed off for more privacy. “And of course we incorporated decks off each level to enjoy the views,” Ed adds. “There’s nothing like sitting on the deck located just off the master suite listening to the ocean waves.”

PRI ME PRO P E RTY When Ed, who is originally from Chicago, and Patti, originally from Atlanta, began looking for Gulf front property, they didn’t immediately think of Gulf Shores. In fact, they weren’t even thinking about Alabama. The south Florida transplants actually stumbled upon the area after a recommendation from a family member. “My stepfather’s brother used to come to Gulf Shores all the time,” Patti explains. “We had never even heard of Gulf Shores, but he suggested we check it out. Thankfully, we did. It blew us away. The white sand, the clear water—it was exactly what we had in our mind all along.”

After looking around at the available Gulf front lots, they came across a prime plot of land on West Beach that boasted 77 feet of Gulf front beach and tall, beautiful sand dunes. Another bonus to the property was that it’s in a subdivision. “Being in a subdivision means architectural integrity,” Ed says. “There are no HOA dues, but we have essentially a private beach, there’s no public access, and the homes around us are held to higher standards as well.”

BUI LT T O L A ST As Ed and Patti planned their 3,350-plus square foot home, they took great care to make sure it included all of the custom comforts desired: bamboo flooring, circular maple staircase, outdoor shower, gas burning fireplace, built-in bookshelves, unique portal windows, and even surround sound throughout the entire home.

But the couple also ensured the house, which is made of real stucco, was built to withstand the sometimes harsh seaside weather. The windows and doors on the Gulf side of the home are made of high impact glass. The couple also opted for a geothermal heating and cooling system, a much more energy efficient system, and it was strategically placed inside the garage instead of outside in the elements. “It was very important to us that the home had structural integrity and made for living year-around,” Ed says. “This house was built to withstand the elements, and we spared no expense to make that happen.”

PA RTY HO U S E This three-level home was practically designed for entertaining. The main living area (the second floor) features two-level vaulted ceilings with an open floor plan. The living room opens to the large kitchen, which features top-of-the-line appliances, tumbled marble backsplash, granite countertops, and maple cabinets. Outside the main living area is a large deck overlooking the private beach. And just upstairs on the third level, which features the large master suite that can open up to the main living area thanks to hidden sliding doors, is another spacious deck with incredible views of the tall sand dunes and blue water.
