Time has consistently progressed in a linear and irreversible manner, often resulting in the eventual oblivion or concealment of relics from the past. However, should we simply abandon places or objects that were once glorious & magnificent?

In this portfolio, I aim to convey my deep concern for the underappreciated, neglected, or abandoned aspects of the past, which have intrigued me throughout my college years.

From an abandoned factory , a dilapidated railroad, and an island full of discarded plastics, I am trying to explore how urban design can revitalize abandoned things by transforming them to create more time-effective spaces without losing the traces of history.

——Islanders Unite in Efforts to Repurpose Marine

Debris for the Revitalization of Hermit Crab Dwellings, Reinstating the Island's Pristine Ecological Balance Type: Individual Work Location: Cocos Keeling Islands, Australia Duration: 08/2023-09/2023 Area: 14.2 square kilometers

When scientists embarked on an expedition to the Cocos Islands in the Indian Ocean for research purposes, they were confronted with a disheartening reality: 570,000 hermit crabs had perished due to entangled plastics. This surge in plastic waste had inflicted significant harm upon the wildlife habitat, creating a profound threat to the local environment and the survival of the native inhabitants. In response to this crisis, a transformative concept emerged: recycling and repurposing plastic waste to create sanctuaries for hermit crabs. This pioneering initiative also introduced novel plastic materials to sustain the mangrove ecosystem, fostering a harmonious cycle of ecological well-being. As a result, not only did this multi-faceted approach revitalize the environment, but it also catalyzed/propelled the growth of the local tourism, bringing forth positive economic prospects.

By engaging waste collectors across diverse contexts and generating employment opportunities for the island's residents, plastic materials that currently taint the environment will be reconfigured into shells suitable for hermit crabs' habitation. This innovation aims to achieve more than just optimizing the plastic barriers within the mangrove habitat. It embodies the overarching project aspiration of remediating plastic pollution, enhancing hermit crab survival rates, and harmonizing the aquatic flora and fauna within the expansive mangrove ecosystem.

This comprehensive ecological restoration framework will stimulate a thriving feedback loop, propelling both tourism and economic expansion among the island's inhabitants. In this approach, an island once threatened by an inundation of waste will be infused with renewed vitality and promise.

The factory is strategically located, close to highways, Yangtze River and other transportation hubs. The terrain in the area is characterized by hills and there is a slope towards the south. The factory site is situated at an elevation higher than the flood control capacity, ensuring protection from flooding.

Additionally, the ground in the area exhibits good bearing capacity, providing a stable foundation for construction and infrastructure development.

EXISTING CONDITIONS

The project is located at No. 18 Taixi Road, Taishan New Village, Pukou District, Nanjing City, at the foot of Taishan Temple. In China, there are many similar small abandoned factories. Due to fierce market competitions caused by reforming and opening up, once prosperous production sites have now become large tracts of land lost in cities. In addition to the contamination of the soil, this place also seals the memories of early people and has now lost touch with the surrounding urban renewal.

This project aims to fully integrate the existing resources of the site through the design concept of "Wasteland Sprouts". Site pollution remediation is carried out through measures such as assessment of contaminated soil, soil solidification and water purification, as well as the construction of ecological nurseries.

While retaining and reviving the original memory history, we repair damaged buildings, introduce new symbols, create new green spaces, and stimulate new activity needs for past factory employees and surrounding residents. Reopening the area in an innovative way brings new life to the derelict building.

On the waterfront steps, people engage in lively conversations, enjoying the scenic view. In the distance, a lawn made of earth bales serves a practical purpose as it acts as a storage and landfill area for contaminated soils.

MUSEUM

Mushroom cultivation helps to improve polluted soils, and the factory on the side was converted into an urban vegetable trading center where people can trade fresh and home-grown vegetables.

OLD FACTORY SITE

The old factory is now a museum, allowing visitors to experience historical memories.

The water flowing from the water mirror symbolizes renewal, while reflections of old residents in the mirror depict the passage of time.

Focused on the deserted Ningwu Railway section in Nanjing, bridging Yuhuatai's rural areas to the historic Qinhuai urban area, the project thoroughly examines six prototype zones: abandoned farmland, warehouses, markets, urban agricultural land, old city cultural parks, and deteriorating commercial complexes.

Based on this analysis, three design concepts cater to different time frames: long-term perspectives, emergency scenarios, and current circumstances.

With the construction of the city, the original supply relationship has changed, the countryside began to be squeezed, and various elements of the city have been gradually established.

Linear disappearance

City growth reshaped supply networks, adapting goods and services to urban needs. This shift encouraged innovation, revolutionizing the economy 14 to meet modern demands.

RAILWAY TRANSFORMATION

In 1950, China's first railway, the Chengdu-Chongqing Railway, was completed, revolutionizing freight transportation and enhancing connectivity across the country.

After the 19th century, development led to mature allocation methods like high-speed rail and air freight. Railway transportation, once a dominant force, has gradually diminished, resulting in the abandonment of numerous railway lines.

In the post-pandemic era, we are trying to rebuild a new mode of production distribution, reimagining the railway as a new urban lifeline.

The closure policy during the COVID-19 pandemic and the regional transportation paralysis caused people in Shanghai to buy food in large quantities to stock up, which caused food prices to rise sharply. Because of a short shelf life being, the price of vegetables had the highest growth ratio : 50% of pre-epidemic prices.

2022 marks the beginning of heightened awareness of urban agrarianism in China.

As urbanization continues to advance in Hong Kong, natural green spaces are further eroded, and tall buildings obstruct air circulation, exacerbating smog, reducing visibility, and leading to a significant increase in ozone levels, resulting in severe air pollution.To address and raise awareness of this issue, we plan to construct an ecological tower in the densely populated city center of Mong Kok Road, designed to serve as an air-purifying structure.This tower is equipped with a natural chimney effect and various forms of ecological spheres that can adjust their positions in response to the city's air quality. Its primary purpose is to sensitize people to the importance of environmental quality and provide means of monitoring and purifying the air.

The building provides an exhilarating exploration experience with its three-dimensional maze-like structure, supported by slender columns. This unique design creates a sensation reminiscent of walking through a captivating tropical rainforest. The tower purifies the air through the use of natural ecological spheres, which monitor air quality on different floors. Excessive carbon emissions and poor air quality prompt an increase in these ecological spheres, obstructing visitor pathways to remind them of the environmental cost of excessive carbon emissions.

This tower is not merely an air-purifying structure, it serves as a platform to enhance public environmental awareness and alert people to the significance of air quality. Through exploration, interaction, and the ever-evolving architectural design, we aim to ignite public enthusiasm for air quality protection and collectively establish a closed-loop ecological system for reducing carbon emissions.

The ecological spheres goes from the basement level to the ground with the elevator built into the core tube, and can be freely expanded and retracted to different module gaps along the slide rails through the telescopic mechanical arm.

Through rotation and mirroring operations, five modules form the overall structure of the building and I intend to use these modules to break the traditional regular layout.

The human-shaped streamlines are like a maze, cleverly connecting the entire building and diversifying the paths.

At the same time, the ecological balls are wisely placed in the circulation, forming obstacles that block people's paths, thus requiring adjustments to the route.

When walking inside the building, people can see the operation of the robotic arm. When they are tired from climbing, they can rest on the seats and enjoy the scenery in the distance.

The large modules form a viewing platform with a wide view and connect the upper and lower stairs, increasing the explorability of the whole building.

Pop-up shops can provide food and supplies while also showcasing the culture and character of the city. It is a place for people to communicate, and its modularity makes it more flexible and changeable.

In a densely populated urban area, the building's eco-sphere continuously renews, purifying the air. Vibrant colors and unique architecture attract people to explore. Through path changes, individuals grasp the severity of environmental pollution and the essentiality of collaborative efforts. Observing the architecture from afar, ecosphere fluctuations indicate the urgency of environmental degradation or achievements through joint endeavors.
