BUFFS OPEN HOME SLATE WITH RIVAL TARLETON STATE SATURDAY OPENING DRIVE NOTES • • •

Coming off a short week due to severe weather at UT Permian Basin last Saturday, the Buffs open the 2016 home slate Saturday at 6 p.m. at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium versus rival Tarleton State.

WT stands at 2-1 on the year and 1-0 in LSC play, while Tarleton State is 1-2 on the season and also 1-0 in league play after dominating 35-5 win over Angelo State last weekend.

This is the first of three trophy/series games for WT this season as the Buffs and Texans play fro the Traveling Trophy. WT regained the trophy last season with a 52-38 win in the LSC Football Festival at AT&T Stadium in Arlington after Tarleton State had won the previous two meetings The Buffs also play Eastern New Mexico for the Wagon Wheel and Midwestern State in the Highway 287 Challenge.

WT has been road warriors this season with three-straight road games to open the season for the first time since 1997. That season, the Buffs went 2-1 in their first three game en route to a 7-4 campaign.

The Buffs have traveled 1,632 miles so far this season with trips to Azusa Pacific (1,059), Colorado State-Pueblo (333) and UT Permian Basin (240). WT has seven road games this season marking the most regular season road games since 1998.

This is the latest WT has opened at home since 1988 when the Buffs didn’t play their first home game until Oct. 1. That season the team also started with three straight road games (1-2).

Saturday’s game is one of just four home games during the regular season at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium. That is the fewest home games since 2012 when WT also had four

home games going 3-1 and 12-3 overall en route to a LSC championship and a berth in the NCAA National semifinals. WT went 8-2 on the road in 2012, including the playoffs and won at the LSC Football Festival on a neutral field.

WT won its 500th game on Sunday at UT Permian Basin as the Buffs are 500-496-22 and the Buffs now are 105-97 all-time in the Lone Star Conference.

The Buffs will honor Jerry Behrens who passed away in February of 2016 at the game as he played on the offensive line for the Buffs from 1958-1962. He was part of the WT team who defeated Ohio University 15-14 in the 1962 Sun Bowl. The Buffs will honor Behrens by wearing a helmet sticker (75) on their helmets throughout the 2016 season.

A WIN OVER TARLETON STATE WOULD . . .

Give WT a 3-1 record which would be the best start for the Buffs since 2013 (4-0) and match the 3-1 start by the Buffs in 2012.

Would give WT a 15-11 mark all-time against Tarleton State and an 8-6 mark in Canyon.

Give head coach Mike Nesbitt his 22nd win at WT (21-13).

Be the 501st win in program history (500-496-22).

Snap a two-season home opener losing skid and give WT a 37-30-1 record in home openers since 1946. WT opened the home slate in 2014 with Tarleton State in a 31-27 loss.

Prior to that, WT had won four straight home openers.

Give WT a 7-4 record on Sept. 24 and extend its winning streak to five on this date. WT is 4-3 at home on Sept. 24 and 2-1 on the road. WT last played on Sept. 24 vs. Incarnate Word with a 52-7 win in 2011.

WT has scored 291 points on Sept. 24 and allowed 202.
