Summer Learning Not Just for Kids Anymore ...

Summer.

The word conjures up the pleasure of waking up without an alarm clock, imagining what the day might bring. Will it be building a hideout to house a prized sea glass collection? Picking blueberries to make homemade jam? Showing a friend the strange science of Mentos in Diet Coke or finally creating that web comic?

This unstructured fun isn’t just a summer idyll. It’s real-world education. Whether you’re a 7-year-old sorting sea glass or a 37-year-old trying to DIY your kitchen renovation, you’re engaging in practical explorations of science, technology, engineering, arts, math and more. At the Library, we can help you bring your dreams to life. We will connect you with the books, information, activities and people you need, and even the ones you didn’t know you needed. Think of us as a trusty sidekick to guide, support and cheer you along the way. We’ll be Dr. Watson to your Sherlock, Robin to your Batman — but without the English accent and with pants! Inside this issue of Inspire, you’ll find our 2015 Summer Learning tracker. Even though our Summer Learning program had record participation last year, with Continued on Page 4

more than 5,000 kids and teens reading at least 10 hours, 500 reading 100 hours and almost 1,200 completing a learning tracker, we’re dreaming even bigger this summer. This year’s program, which officially begins June 1 and ends Aug. 31, challenges kids, teens and adults to read for pleasure and to learn something new. By including adults, we intend to celebrate all of the reading and learning that’s going on out there in Kitsap. Individual adults are invited to participate, as are entire families. Parents, this is a great opportunity to model the kind of lifelong learning behaviors that we know will help kids be successful. And who doesn’t love a little healthy competition? There are several different ways to engage with Summer Learning, so whether you’re an annual fan or a brand new convert, here’s a breakdown of various options:

Read Even More

Read It’s as simple as it sounds. Read for 10 hours and win a prize. We’ll reward kids and teens with a free prize book of their choice and a ticket to the Kitsap County Fair & Stampede. Adults will earn mad props as well as a small token of our admiration. Best of all, we want you to read whatever makes you happy. Board books read to a baby? Check. Us Weekly? Sure. Audiobooks? Yep. The Divergent Trilogy? Amy Poehler’s autobiography? Comic books? Yes, yes and more yes. Use the tracker (page 13) to mark your own hours, or have everyone in your family record their time right on the same sheet. Please feel free to mark your time in whatever way works be st for you since

Follow the steps to reach your goal, and then tell us about it for a chance to win a tablet computer at the end of the summer.

If you usually need industrial strength duffel bags to get your giant stack of books home, we challenge you to achieve our Master Level. Read 100 hours this summer, and you will receive the ultimate in geek chic: our coveted 100-hour reader T-shirt. Adults, you can stop being jealous of the kids and teens, because now you can win these trendy tees, too! Extra trackers can be picked up at your local library or downloaded, but you can also feel free to track your time in whatever way works best for you. Trackers can be downloaded at www. KRL.org/summer.

Get Inspired and Make Stuff With all that reading, we bet you’re plotting some awesome ideas this summer, too. Identify at least one thing you’d like to learn or accomplish and our Inspire tracker will help you chart out what you will need to do to achieve success. Follow the steps to reach your goal, and then tell us about it for a chance to win a tablet computer at the end of the summer. Tempting, no? As you’ve probably noticed by paging through this booklet, we also host a broad array of events this summer to suit almost any interest. From teen field trips to stargazing with Pacific Planetarium, from baby dance parties to book trivia in a bar, we invite you to come on in, say hi to your neighbors and as our mission statement challenges: Dream more, learn more, do more and be more. Happy Summer Learning. — Shannon Peterson, Youth Services Manager

Using Your Library

Digital Library

Follow Your Dreams Online

You don’t need a library card if you want to come to one of our locations to hang out, use a computer, read a newspaper or take a class. But it helps to have a card if you want to check out an item and enjoy it at home or to download stuff from KRL.org.

H

Your Library Card You can apply for a card online (www.KRL.org/cards) or at any library location. Be sure to bring an ID or proof of residence. Your Kitsap Regional Library card gives you access to all nine locations, the bookmobile, and our website. You can return anything you borrow to any of our locations.

Welcome to the Library Online We can’t be open all hours, but our website is. Your library card number and your password allow you to establish an online account that brings Kitsap Regional Library into your computer or mobile device. There’s a lot to explore and be inspired by at KRL.org: free music to download, ebooks to enjoy, magazines to peruse. The choices are virtually endless.

Your Card’s Privacy & Responsibilities Your library is open to all. Your account is not. We will not disclose your account history to anyone or any entity. If you want a spouse or family member to be able to pick up items on your account, you need to tell us in advance.

Not on the Shelf? We want you to get what you want. So you can place a hold on any item in our collection by making a “hold request” online, by phone or at your library. What if we don’t have your item in our

collection? No problem. You can request the purchase of an item. Go to www.KRL.org/ requests. Just tell us what you’re looking for. Many times, we’ll buy a copy just because you asked for it. If we can’t buy one, we’ll try to borrow a copy from another library.

You Can Keep It … 3 Weeks

Books, Magazines, Music, DVDs (four hours or longer)

Renew

As long as no one else is waiting for your item, you may renew it three more times.

Fines & Fees If you sign up for email or text notification, you will receive a reminder three days before your items are due. If you are late returning an item, we will charge you 25 cents per day per item. Maximum overdue fine is $5 per item. If your item is more than 10 days late, you will get a notification. If your item is more than 21 days late, the Library will consider it missing and will bill your account. If you owe more than $25 or a missing item, you won’t be able to borrow anything else. Come in and discuss it with us, and we’ll work to figure out a solution for you.

How to Volunteer Volunteering Your Time

Opportunities

We encourage you to join our team – we need help with tutoring, providing library support at our different locations and helping with systemwide projects and events. If you have special interests or talents, we want to know about it. We are all about having your volunteering experience at Kitsap Regional Library be both fun and purposeful.

We often have specific volunteer jobs we are trying to fill. To view all of our volunteer opportunities, go to www. KRL.org/volunteer. Click the link under “Opportunities.”

Apply Today We make it easy to apply through a simple online form at www.KRL.org/ volunteer. If you have questions, reach our Volunteer Coordinator at (360) 405-9102 or at volunteer@KRL.org.

ex Lewis, long-time Silverdale community advocate, says, “I think a library provides a window into what a community values; how much it cares for the quality of life for its citizens.” To create the concept for a library that reflects Silverdale’s history and values, we engaged local architects Rice Fergus Miller. Their proposed design reflects the ebb and flow of the Clear Creek estuary, adjacent to the site chosen for the new library. Estuaries, where fresh water meets the sea, are among the most vibrant, diverse places on the planet. Libraries, like estuaries, provide a rich environment where the community is supported, connected and nurtured. Combining the power of a library with this amazing location near Clear Creek creates an irreplaceable opportunity for Silverdale. The

Kitsap Regional Library Foundation’s 2015 goal is, at minimum, to raise the money needed to purchase this unique piece of land, securing the site for the future home of Kitsap Regional Library, Silverdale. For more information, go to www.KRL.org/ secure-the-site.
