We love Laurie! As we welcome Allison on board as Editor with open arms, we just want to take a minute to express how we feel about working with Laurie these last couple of years (since Vol 1, Issue 1!)
Laurie is one of the smartest, insightful, diplomatic, witty, and just plain nice people I’ve ever worked with. She has been instrumental in keeping Kitchen Drawer from being shelved and we are lucky she has shared her talents with us for the past 3 years. She will be missed but for some reason I don’t think this is the last time we’ll be seeing her.-Ben Johnson Working with Laurie is like working with your own personal cheerleader. She not only provides helpful and constructive criticism, but also makes writing enjoyable! She also graciously put up with all my dead-ends and minor freakouts with articles, even though she was probably pulling out her hair. Writing for KD won’t be the same without her; she will be truly missed!-Rachel Scoggins Laurie, thank you for helping me understand the proper place for an - and a –, and of course, the pesky —! You are one of the most hard working, dependable, fun people I’ve ever worked with. I’m glad we had the genius idea to bring you on board for the very first issue! ;) (Please note this may be the first emoticon printed in KD.) -Nicole Scibetta Laurie, it has been a great pleasure working with you on so many levels. I will never forget the beautiful story you wrote about my precious daddy. It meant so much to me, and it helped to mend a huge hole in my heart and in my life. Now, whenever I read it (which is often), I will not only think of him, but I will also think of you and your kindness. -All the best, Nan Jolly Moore Laurie can correct your errors and make you feel like a genius while she’s doing it. She is one of a dwindling number of people who appreciates the value of the semicolon. Laurie is a very smart, classy, and tactful lady!- Allison Smyly Laurie has turned some of my broken English writings into true masterpieces. I thoroughly proofread every email sent to her- not because she will correct it, but because I respect her enough not to send shoddy literature. She deserves better than that. Cheers to you, Laurie! You’ve left an impression in all of us that will forever remain.-Ashley Green

(from left to right) Rob Cochrane assists in Molly’s restoration, Jeff Sanders takes a seat on Molly, Truett Cathy at Molly’s unveiling.
As a boy, Jeff Sanders was a big fan of Thomaston’s fire department, where his dad was a volunteer firefighter. Jeff watched his dad and other firefighters battle many a blaze from the seat of one of the three fire trucks Thomaston had at that time. Jeff's favorite fire truck was a 1927 American LaFrance, also known as “Molly.” Jeff credits the fire department and its chief at the time, C.W. “Bushy” McDaniel, with helping him decide to behave himself in school and in all of life. Mr. McDaniel, whose wife taught across the hall from Jeff's first grade class, often visited the grammar school and served as an unofficial mentor to
At home, Jeff and his dad could hear the loud motor of the fire engine from blocks away and waited breathlessly to see if Chief McDaniel would remember his promise. Remember he did, and Jeff was on top of the world as he rang Molly's bell all the way around the town square and on to school. When they arrived at the school, Chief McDaniel gently lifted Jeff from the seat, and before placing him on the ground, said, “If you ever pitch another temper tantrum, you cannot ride or sit on one of my fire trucks, nor come to the fire station, ever!” Jeff proudly
the children. In the middle of one of Jeff's frequent temper tantrums, Chief McDaniel appeared in his classroom. “If you will stop this ruckus, I'll come get you on Friday morning and take you to school on Molly,” the fire chief said. “You can ring the bell all the way to school.” Jeff behaved well for the rest of the week, anticipating that morning as if waiting for Santa Claus.
walked into the school a reformed student who never had another tantrum. Jeff remembers spending pleasant summer days at the fire station, polishing the fire equipment, watching old timers play checkers, and listening to the firefighters' stories. When Jeff would step up on a crate to peer longingly at an Orange Crush in the soft drink chest, a

fireman would always say, “I'll pay for this one, you pay next time,” even though Jeff had brought his nickel for a drink. Back then, events at the fire department made news for the whole community. Jeff remembers the whole town coming out to see a 1959 closed cab LaFrance fire truck coming in to town by train, but Molly always remained Jeff's favorite. Throughout his childhood, Jeff stayed loyal to the fire department and Molly, despite a misunderstanding that resulted in Jeff's missing an opportunity to ride Molly in a parade. Things were never quite the same for Jeff after the fire station was remodeled and Molly was placed behind windowless doors; now, he could only admire her when the doors were open or when the truck was out of the station. With the delivery of another new fire truck in 1962, Molly
After the fire, Molly was cleaned up and again placed in parade status until October 1966, when she was sold at public auction to local businessman Tom Cason. Though Mr. Cason invited him to come see Molly any time, Jeff only visited a few times. Seeing Molly in a garage instead of at the fire station brought Jeff a twinge of sadness. After Molly was sold to Skip Seback of Decatur, Georgia, Jeff caught glimpses of her at the Atlanta Fire Muster and on the news. Jeff lost track of Molly's whereabouts when she was sold to new owners out of state, but he and his dad never forgot the old fire truck. In 1988, Jeff's dad told him that he needed to find Ole Molly and bring her back home “where she belongs.” For years, roadblocks and dead ends marred Jeff's attempts to find Molly and bring her back to the Thomaston area. Once, when Jeff's ailing father asked about his search,
was retired and placed in “parade status.” This meant that unless there was a large fire, she would never again respond to a fire call. After the truck was retired, Chief McDaniel fondly called her “Ole Molly.” Although it appeared that Molly's glory days were over, she got another chance to shine in “active duty.” In August 1966, Thomaston's worst fire in more than thirty years erupted when a tank overflowed during a gas delivery to the Britt Oil Company, resulting in a massive explosion and fire. Flames engulfed the oil company, Rogers Concrete, Ideal Cleaners, and several other small buildings. Even the railroad tracks were damaged in the extensive heat of the fire. All available fire trucks were called to service, including “Ole Molly.” On her final fire call, Molly pumped 800 gallons of water per minute for hours and never missed a beat.
Jeff told his dad that he was ready to give up. “Don't ever give up,” Jeff's dad replied. “You just might miss out on a blessing if you do.” Jeff then promised his dad that he would never stop trying to find Ole Molly and bring her home. A couple of months later, Jeff's dad died, and his mother passed away a short time later. Jeff renewed his search for Molly after his parents' deaths, spending hundreds of hours on the Internet and on the phone. More years passed and Jeff's search remained fruitless. He feared that the “grand old lady” was rusting away somewhere, never to be found. On a cold day in December 2010, Jeff's friend Russ McGee, bubbling over with excitement, called Jeff and told him to check his e-mail. Russ had forwarded to Jeff a news clip from Fox News in Charlotte, North Carolina, entitled, “Old Red Fire Truck Looking for a Home.” Jeff was almost afraid to watch the clip for fear of another disappointment. In the news clip, the owner of a 1927 LaFrance showed various important papers, including one that showed that the truck had been built for the town of Thomaston, Georgia. It was Molly! Although the fire truck was for sale, the asking price proved to be far beyond Jeff's means and triple the actual worth of the antique fire truck. Although the city leaders of Thomaston very much wanted to bring Molly back to the area, the price was not within the city's budget, either. Hoping that he would find an ally in Truett Cathy, the founder of Chick-fil-A and the owner of The Rock Ranch near Thomaston, Jeff enlisted the help of his friend Jeff Manley, manager of The Rock Ranch.
( 7 7 0) 412 - 0 4 41
Mr. Cathy was willing to help, but he told Jeff Sanders point blank, “Get the price down.” According to Jeff Manley, Mr. Cathy loves old fire trucks, but he also loves “horse trading.” After months David Lee Stewart, age 3, admires Molly’s of difficult new red paint. negotiations, a selling price was agreed upon. Mr. Cathy purchased
A collection of antique vehicles, including Molly, is on display in Truett’s Barn, a 27,000-square- foot facility at The Rock Ranch, near Thomaston, Georgia. Truett’s Barn is open to visitors during The Rock Ranch’s regular operating hours. the fire truck, then gave it to the city of Thomaston in appreciation of the support The Rock Ranch receives from its community. “(Mr. Cathy) is so genuinely thankful that God has given him the resources to bless others,” says Jeff Manley. The dream of welcoming Molly back home came true in December 2011. Jeff Manley recalls that a small group of tough, burly firemen learned of Molly's return and came to watch her roll into town on a trailer. It was a solemn, emotional time as these men silently pondered their own special memories of Molly, perhaps of admiring her in a parade or watching their fathers or grandfathers fight fires with her. “It was as quiet as a church,” said Jeff. Since the city of Thomaston does not have a place to house Molly, she is now on display in Truett's Barn at The Rock Ranch for all to see and enjoy, complete with a brand new set of BF Goodrich Silvertown tires. Charles McDaniel, son of fire chief C.W. McDaniel, and Von Mitchell donated funds to have pinstriper Rob Cochrane paint all the striping and lettering by hand, just as it would have been done 85 years ago when Molly was first delivered to Thomaston. As Safety Officer at The Rock Ranch, Jeff Sanders can visit Molly often, as can anyone who wants to remember the days when a shiny red fire truck, a gleaming brass bell, and an Orange Crush were just about all it took to make a perfect afternoon for a child. This summer, Jeff will get an opportunity he missed years ago: he will ride on Molly in Thomaston’s Fourth of July parade. Molly's glory days are here again.

Eagle & Lion Brew Pub Mark Broe
One of Griffin’s newest businesses, the Eagle & Lion Brew Pub, is distinctive in many ways. Not only is it Griffin’s only brew pub, it is the only brew pub within a forty mile radius of Griffin. The Eagle & Lion is one of only three brew pubs in the nation, and the only one in the Southeast, to specialize in Real Ale, a cask-Âconditioned ale that is served from the vessel in which final fermentation took place. Mark Broe, the Eagle & Lion’s owner and brewer, became a brewer because of his affinity for Real Ale, which is less processed than most beers because it is not filtered, pasteurized, or artificially carbonated. An Atlanta native, Mark trained at Brewlab at the University of Sunderland and was head brewer at Grand Union Brewery in London for several years before returning to the United States. In August 2011, he began renovating space in the old Coca-ÂCola bottling plant for his own brew pub. Business has been brisk since the Eagle & Lion Brew Pub opened on March 14, serving a variety of beers, wines, spirits, and of course, Real Ale. Weekend nights when the band is playing are especially popular, as are Tuesdays, which are team trivia nights. The Eagle & Lion offers pub-Âtype food, including burgers, sandwiches, and salads. The most popular menu item so far is fish and chips, which is fresh, wild-Âcaught Alaskan cod in a beer batter, served with what most of us call “fries.â€? The tasty Reuben sandwich is the pub’s second most popular menu item. “It’s not a restaurant. It’s not a bar,â€? says Mark of his business. “It’s a place where people come to meet. That’s the most important aspect of this establishment.â€? Mark’s goal is for the Eagle & Lion to become the Griffin area’s “localâ€? (a term used in England to describe an area’s most popular gathering place). He wants people to enjoy conversations with their friends at the Eagle & Lion, without the distractions of loud music or sports games blaring on televisions. Mark really likes his adopted hometown of Griffin. “It’s a town where people belong,â€? he says. “There’s a sense of place here.â€? He hopes that the Eagle and Lion will have a presence in Griffin for years to come. Says Mark, “I want this to be my home. This is where I want to settle.â€?
4(DVW7D\ORU6WUHHW*ULIĂ€Q*$_ZZZJULIĂ€QEUHZSXEFRP_HPDLOLQIR#JULIĂ€QEUHZSXEFRP Uncluttered, Inc., a professional organizing business located in Griffin, began on the |  Saralyn  Fountain  and  Pam  Barbee beach. As Saralyn Fountain enjoyed the sand and surf, she began thinking ahead to her retirement from years as a co-Âfounder and co-Âdirector of Stepping Stones Educational Therapy Center. Saralyn realized that she wanted to retire to something, and because of her natural affinity for organization and order, quickly settled upon professional organizing. Saralyn knew that her similarly gifted friend Pam Barbee, who was also enjoying the beach that day, would be a great business partner. Pam was seeking a new direction after a career in outside sales and quickly agreed to join Saralyn’s business venture, revealing to Saralyn her longtime interest in the field of professional organizing. Uncluttered, Inc. was incorporated in July 2011. Saralyn and Pam use their organizational abilities to help clients achieve calming, tranquil environments in their homes. They usually encourage clients to tackle one project at a time in manageable, three-Âhour increments, sometimes giving the client “homeworkâ€? assignments, such as trying on and discarding unneeded clothing. This focused approach keeps customers from feeling overwhelmed by a project and helps them prepare for Saralyn and Pam’s next visit. The ladies have found that people often accumulate a surplus of items related to their interests and hobbies, whether reading, knitting, fishing, cooking, or carpentry. “We tell them that if they have a place for (the items), it’s okay,â€? says Pam. “If not, they might need to re-Âthink.â€? Saralyn and Pam encourage customers to donate or recycle items that they no longer need. “It’s a win-Âwin,â€? says Saralyn. Potential customers are provided an initial assessment for $50 and an estimate of the number of hours required for each job. The cost of the initial assessment is deducted from the final price if the customer retains the services of Uncluttered, Inc. While working with customers, Saralyn and Pam provide tips for staying organized in the future. “Delayed decisions equal clutter,â€? says Pam. The ladies encourage customers to immediately discard unneeded items, such as junk mail, and thus avoid future problem areas. “(Getting organized) really promotes a calming environment,â€? Saralyn says. “Life is short. We don’t need to spend our time looking for things.â€? Saralyn Fountain and Pam Barbee are members of the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO) and the Georgia chapter of NAPO (Ga-ÂNAPO). They are also certified designers for Shelf Genie, a manufacturer of custom-Âmade glide-Âout shelving.

Bridget  and  Richard  Randels Richard Randels recognized a good business opportunity when he saw it. Fortunately, that golden opportunity was already under his own roof: his wife Bridget’s cleaning business, Squeaky Clean Inc. After a number of years in their separate careers, Richard and Bridget Randels re-Âevaluated their priorities and decided to work toward the common goal of building Bridget’s already successful cleaning business. Now in its eleventh year of business, Squeaky Clean Inc. provides a variety of residential and commercial cleaning services. Squeaky Clean offers regular and/or full-Âservice cleanings to residential clients weekly, biweekly, or once every four weeks. The company specializes in “Deep Squeaks,â€? a one-Âof-Âa-Âkind deep cleaning provided only by Squeaky Clean Inc. Commercial cleanings are scheduled according to clients’ specifications. Staff members (“Squeakersâ€?) must pass a very stringent qualification and interview process, including background checks. Squeaky Clean’s staff is professionally trained with certification in green cleaning, for safer, happier, healthier homes and staff. After many years of using traditional chemicals, Bridget saw the effects these can have on a person and switched the entire operation over to “green,â€? that is, using chemicals and methods that are natural and environmentally safe. At a client’s request the more traditional chemicals can be used. Bridget and Richard are Verified Home Cleaning Pros, meaning that their insurance and business standings are monitored by an independent party and must be kept up-Âto-Âdate. Squeaky Clean Inc. is a member of the Chamber of Commerce in both Spalding and Pike counties. The company is currently working on their drug-Âfree workplace certification. Squeaky Clean Inc. is also associated with the non-Âprofit organizations Cleaning for Heroes and Cleaning for Cancer. According to Operations Manager and Team Leader Paula Lyons, Squeaky Clean’s services are more than just cleaning, they are about making a difference in a client’s quality of life. Paula says, “(Bridget and Richard) are people who will stand by what they say.â€? Squeaky Clean’s customers must agree; the business has a client retention rate of 95%. All crew members at Squeaky Clean Inc. make sure that clients get everything they pay for, and then some, says Paula. The thriving business works every day to make their mission statement a reality: to provide quality services at affordable prices, putting people and our community above monetary gain. 6TXHDN\&OHDQ,QFRIIHUV)5((FRQVXOWDWLRQVWRGHYHORSDSHUVRQDOL]HGFOHDQLQJSODQIRUHDFKFOLHQW¡VQHHGV)RU PRUHLQIRUPDWLRQYLVLWWKHLUZHEVLWHRUĂ€QGWKHPRQ)DFHERRN
Layne Singleton Eight year old Layne Singleton had an idea for a business; helped find, remodel, and decorate a location; and is a now a hands-Âon business owner. While traveling in Italy in February 2011, Layne loved sampling gelato, an Italian version of sorbet, but noticed that the shops were often out of her favorite flavors. Layne decided to open her own shop back home in Griffin, well stocked with plenty of sorbets, ice cream, and other treats. Laynie Bug’s Sweets and Treats, in a cheerful red building with white trim across the street from Rose’s in Griffin, will celebrate its one-Âyear anniversary in June. Laynie Bug’s serves ice cream flavors with attitude, like salted caramel bacon; coffee and donuts; and Mexican chocolate, made with habanero peppers. There’s the “Naughty American,â€? with peanut brittle, chocolate, and cherries. The “Elvisâ€? is made with bananas, peanut butter, and bacon. All ice creams are homemade by Chef Keith at High Roads Craft Ice Cream in Atlanta; most ingredients used are organic. For flavors such as blueberry cobbler, turtle cheesecake, and pineapple upside down cake, the actual dessert is prepared, then mixed in with the ice cream. Berry lemonade and red berry sorbets taste like the Italian gelato that inspired Layne to open the shop. More traditional flavors, like strawberry, peach, chocolate, and vanilla are also available.Various flavors of homemade fudge, including chocolate walnut, orange cream, and cappuccino, also tempt customers. Don’t let this entrepreneur’s youth make you think she’s not serious about her business. Once asked if she was too young to be working at the shop, second-Âgrader Layne shot back, “I’m the owner.â€? Laynie Bug’s is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 12:00-Â9:00 pm; Fridays and Saturdays 12:00-Â10:00 pm; and Sundays 1:00-Â9:00 pm.

Health Insurance Savings for Members - Group rates for small businesses with few employees - Health Savings Accounts available Our MemberCare Alliance Chamber of Commerce-sponsored insurance programs began in 1994. Since that time, we have introduced programs in over 120 Chambers of Commerce in Georgia. We have nearly 2,600 enrolled businesses covering 34,100 small business employees. These programs were developed to give small and medium-sized Chamber member businesses access to discounted insurance products. We work through local independent insurance agents to make available comprehensive health insurance, limited-benefit health plans, long-term care insurance and supplemental coverage like dental insurance, term life insurance, disability income coverage, and vision care insurance. Products are offered through a variety of the top insurance carriers, and most products have some type of negotiated premium discount designed to save you money. Now, you can give your employees quality benefit packages like those that large companies provide.
For more information or to get a quote on the MemberCare Alliance program please call 770-579-1214 or 800-782-8254, or email us at email@example.com.

How can martial arts help young people who are engaging in aggressive behavior, or “bullying,â€? other students? Kevin Brown believes that some “bulliesâ€? are not necessarily behaving as such on purpose. “They think they're being the class clown,â€? he says. The students are taught that some behaviors that they may perceive as funny are actually bullying. According to Kevin, “We can bring to light what they're actually doing as opposed to what they think they're doing.â€? Kevin says, “Some people think that if you teach a kid to punch and kick, they'll be a bully.â€? He believes that the opposite is often true: teaching young people to use physical force only when physically threatened, and as a last resort, will prevent them from bullying others. David Hart, also a senior instructor at CMA, believes that bullies act the way they GREHFDXVHWKH\ODFNVHOIFRQĂ€GHQFHDQGDVHQVHRIVHOI

Jim says, “The beauty of martial arts is that it encompasses not just the physical aspects of the 'sport,' but the mental and emotional lessons as well.â€? He believes that misplaced aggression and a “win-at-all costsâ€? mindset contribute to the bullying problem and a lack of self-esteem. In contrast, he believes that students who learn proper values are much better prepared for OLIH VXQFHUWDLQWLHV7KHLPSURYHGSK\VLFDOĂ€WQHVVVSHHG VWUHQJWKDQGĂ H[LELOLW\WKDWFRPHZLWKPDUWLDODUWVWUDLQLQJ FDQDOVRERRVWVWXGHQWV FRQĂ€GHQFHLQDKHDOWK\ZD\
Kristie Hall, a pre-kindergarten teacher at Cowan Road Elementary, sees martial arts training as a relevant answer to the bullying problem. “Someone needs to pay attention to the children who are being bullied,â€? Kristie says. She believes that martial arts training gives VWXGHQWVWKHFRQĂ€GHQFHWRVWDQGXSIRUZKDWLVULJKW DQGKHOSVWKHPGLVFRYHUWKHLURZQXQLTXHVWUHQJWKVDQG abilities. In her opinion, karate also builds empathy for others, helping to prevent bullying behavior before it begins. According to Jim, while karate and other forms of martial arts (jiu-jitsu, grappling, and Israeli combatives are blended into CMA's program) will always be used for self-defense, in recent years, martial arts have also become performing arts. Top martial artists often have tumbling and gymnastics skills in addition to excellent martial arts abilities. How well do you actually know the people in your life – whether they’re close to your heart or just close to your home? What about the girl down the street, your best friend of 10 years, the boy in band, the head cheerleader, your coworker, your boss, the class clown? How well do you know their struggles? Probably not well at all. The head cheerleader smiles at the crowd and is secretly cutting herself in the bathroom stall. Your sister has a secret drug addiction. The boy in the band has a dad who gets drunk and beats him up every night. Your coworker just found out her husband is cheating and plans to harm the woman, her husband, and then…herself. As for the girl down the street, she’s a victim of rape. More than once. By her Uncle Joe. And the class clown? He suffers from severe depression and is barely hanging on. Are you with the kids who make fun of the band kid or the “other woman”? When you do discover their struggle, if you even care to ask, what will you do? The person you pass in the hall or driving down the road may be just another face, but do you ever wonder what they are going through? So, before you give the waitress a hard time for messing up your order, consider her day. When the doctor takes too long to give you your x-ray results, think about the surgery he just performed. Did his patient survive? The point is, no matter the exterior of a person, you never know what they are going through…pain or happiness. Open your eyes. Treat people with respect, whether you think they deserve it or not.
