Nursing and Allied Health Classes Assessment Lab: A Skills Review Course for RNs

Phlebotomist Training Course

Clinical assessment is a core nursing function and the means by which nurses begin the process of care planning. The goal of this program is to offer the registered nurse an opportunity to update and refresh their general clinical assessment skills to support optimal outcomes and best-practice nursing care. Multiple body systems will be addressed, such as cardiac, neurological and respiratory systems. Participants will have the opportunity to utilize state-of-the-art simulation equipment for this hands-on learning experience. The student must be a registered nurse with an active Iowa license, or, if inactive, must be eligible for relicensure. Nursing CEUs will be awarded at course completion.

Objectives: 1) Identify the purpose of a comprehensive clinical assessment and how it contributes to patient care, 2) Describe various systems assessments with relationship to cardiac, neurological and respiratory conditions, 3) Review common disease states, appropriate assessment techniques and related assessment findings, and 4) Demonstrate and practice proper clinical assessment of the patient.

This non-credit program prepares students to function as a phlebotomist in a medical laboratory setting. Students will learn to obtain blood specimens via primary phlebotomy techniques in order to facilitate collection and testing. Course content includes anatomy and physiology of the circulatory system, medical terminology prefixes and suffixes, abbreviations and customer service skills. Class consists of classroom work, graded tests and quizzes, and lab practicals followed by an 80-hour clinical experience in a laboratory setting. Included in the cost of the course is a certification exam, which students may take upon successful course completion. Successful passing of the exam results in the Phlebotomy Technician Certification (CPT), which is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCAA) and issued through the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). Prior to registering, all students must take the COMPASS reading placement test by contacting the Kirkwood Community College Test Center at 319-398-5456 in Cedar Rapids or 319-887-3642 in Iowa City. Applicant must achieve a passing score of 76 to be considered eligible to register for the Phlebotomy program. After receiving the assessment score, the applicant must contact the Program Director at 319-398-5626 to complete the registration process. Applicants must be 18 years old and have evidence of high school diploma or equivalent.

Costs associated with the program that are not included in the tuition: Textbook and workbook, background check fee ($45), immunization/ health information tracking fee ($30) and any fees that may be associated with the health requirements.

Special notice: The mandatory 80-hour (two-week) clinical experience is held following successful completion of the lecture/lab portion of the class. Clinical hours will be scheduled Monday through Friday, approximately 7am to 4pm. Please note that evening or weekend hours are NOT available for the clinical experience. Clinical sites are located throughout Kirkwood’s seven county area, with assignment to clinicals by random selection. Students should not expect that their clinical site will be in the same city as their class. Students are responsible for their own transportation to their clinical assignment. Informational guidelines and student expectations for the clinical experience, including the background check process and health requirements, will be explained during the first week of class.

OASIS-C1 Submissions and CASPER Reporting System Training This workshop, offered over the Iowa Communications Network (ICN), will provide students with the most recent information on the use and implementation of OASIS data transmission and reports on QIES systems. The target audience includes home health agency staff responsible for OASIS automation/data transmission. Those who submit OASIS data and want a refresher and information about the new process are encouraged to attend. This program is cosponsored by Telligen and the Consortium of Community Colleges.

Dental Radiography Update

Expanded Functions Dental Assisting Course Kirkwood Community College Continuing Education offers an Iowa Dental Board approved EFDA course for the qualified dental assistant. The Kirkwood EFDA course is designed so the student can obtain their EFDA certificate without leaving their dental office. Coursework is completed through directed text readings along with evaluation measures and completion of clinical skills within their dental office. Students are assigned an instructor who will oversee their progress within the course.

Once accepted into the course, the student is required to attend an orientation session. Alternative orientation options will be considered for those who live a great distance from Kirkwood’s main campus in Cedar Rapids.

Students are given six months to complete the readings, evaluation measures and clinical skills. Online quizzes assist students in obtaining the information needed to pass a required post-assessment.

Individuals who have already earned an EFDA certificate may enroll in a special “bridge” course developed to help the student to complete missing functions in order to earn their Level 1 EFDA. This presentation will provide the dental professional with the latest information on dental imaging, including common safety techniques for both you and your patient. A comparison of types of imaging useful in your practice will be presented, and case studies will be utilized to assist with understanding dental imaging. This program meets the Iowa Dental Board continuing education requirements for dental assistants who wish to renew their qualification in dental radiography.

EKG Technician Training Program Meet the demand for cross-trained health professionals by adding EKG skills to your resume. Our comprehensive 60-hour EKG Technician Training Program prepares you to function as an EKG Technician. An EKG technician is a medical professional trained in operating specialized equipment used to measure the heart’s performance. Technicians work directly with patients, administer the test and provide the resulting data to physicians for analysis. Electrocardiogram (EKG) tests are critical in helping doctors determine heart health problems in patients. EKGs check the electrical activity of the heart to access heart rhythm, rate, strength and timing. They can be used to check the heart’s general health and electrical activity, and to look for signs of heart disease, heart attack, effects of medication or causes of unexplained chest pain. This non-credit course includes important practice and background information on the anatomy and physiology of the heart, medical disease processes, medical terminology, medical ethics, and legal aspects of patient contact.

Students will practice with EKG equipment and perform hands-on labs including introduction to the function and proper use of the EKG machine, and other clinical practices. There is no externship component; all preparation is through lectures, online learning and hands-on training (labs).

Prerequisites: Minimum 18 years of age with high school diploma or its equivalent. Prior to registering, all students must take the COMPASS reading placement test by contacting the Kirkwood Test Center at 319-398-5456 in Cedar Rapids or 319-887-3642 in Iowa City. Applicant must achieve a passing score of 76 to be considered eligible to register for the EKG Technician Training Program. After receiving their assessment score, the applicant must contact the Program Director at 319-398-5626 to complete the registration process. A certificate of completion will be awarded upon successful completion of the EKG Technician Training Program and students will be prepared to sit for a certification exam, which is included in the cost of the course.

Child Abuse and Mandatory Reporting As a child abuse mandatory reporter, this program provides the participant with information on the investigation, identification and legalities of child abuse. Advanced Cardiac Life Support This 12-hour program reviews emergency cardiac care according to the American Heart Association ACLS guidelines. Participants will work in a relaxed small group environment, working through case studies and simulating skills on manikins. Two-year recommended renewal. Materials fee $40 included in cost of class.

Objectives: 1) Recognize and initiate early management of periarrest conditions that may result in cardiac arrest or complicate resuscitation outcome, 2) Demonstrate proficiency in providing BLS care, including prioritizing chest compressions and integrating use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), 3) Recognize and manage respiratory arrest, 4) Recognize and manage cardiac arrest until termination of resuscitation or transfer of care, including immediate post-cardiac arrest care, 5) Recognize and initiate early management of acute coronary syndromes (ACS), including appropriate disposition, 6) Recognize and initiate early management of stroke, including appropriate disposition, and 7) Demonstrate effective communication as a member or leader of a resuscitation team and recognize the impact of team dynamics on overall team performance.

Training for Mandatory Reporters of Child Abuse and Dependent Adult Abuse It is the role and responsibility of all persons who in the course of employment, examine, attend, counsel, or treat children and dependent adults to protect them from harm perpetrated by others. The goal of this course is to increase the knowledge and awareness of child and dependent adult abuse. This course meets the training requirement for mandatory reporters who work with both children and dependent adults on a regular basis. It does not meet the training requirements for persons who work with only one population and not both children and adults. The curriculum for this program is approved by the Iowa Department of Public Health Abuse Education Review Panel, approval #2032. 100 percent attendance is required for CE credit.

KICK Camp: Blue’s Anatomy: Health Careers Camp Does your child think they might have a future in healthcare? At this camp, students will explore careers in various areas such as dental, medical, diagnostic and therapeutic services, emergency care, dietary and vision services. They will go on a field trip and experience a hands-on activity in medical simulation in Kirkwood’s state-of-the-art Katz Family Healthcare Simulation Center. This camp is for youth ages 9-15.

Expanded IV Therapy for the Licensed Practical Nurse This course is designed to prepare the licensed practical nurse to perform procedures related to the expanded scope of intravenous therapy, using a peripheral intravenous catheter, a midline catheter and a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC line), in a licensed hospital, a nursing facility and a certified end-stage renal dialysis unit as identified in 655 IAC Chapter 6. Major emphasis is placed on the specialized skills needed to provide intravenous therapy related to the expanded scope of the licensed practical nurse for clients who are age 12 or older and for clients who weigh 80 pounds or more. During this course the licensed practical nurse will learn: The major legal implications of intravenous therapy (IV) relative to Iowa Code chapter 152 and 655 IAC Chapters 4 and 6, select IV devices used in administering intravenous solutions and drugs, indicating the criteria for use, precautions, complications of each, and documentation of equipment used, specific to a midline and PICC line sites, be knowledgeable of the anatomy and physiology of central veins, demonstrate the principles of infection control, manage IV therapy to decrease the risk of complications, specific to midline and PICC line sites, analyze the major drugs used intravenously, giving precautions, dose and effects, rate of infusion, side effects and reactions, factors controlling stability and compatibility, preparation, and administration of each drug, demonstrate the maintenance and care of the client with a midline or PICC line site and/or infusion, in a simulated laboratory setting and in a clinical setting in accordance with 655 IAC Chapter 6, and perform techniques for preparing and administering IV solutions and additives in simulated and clinical situations with appropriate supervision, according to agency policy.

Prerequisites: 1) Unrestricted Iowa nursing license or an unrestricted license in another state recognized for licensure in this state pursuant to the nurse licensure compact contained in Iowa code 152E, 2) Documented 1040 hours as a LPN, currently employed in a licensed hospital, licensed skilled nursing facility, or a certified end-stage renal dialysis unit whose written policies and procedures allow the licensed practical nurse to perform procedures related to the expanded scope of intravenous therapy, and 3) completed agency agreement. All prerequisites need to be completed and returned no later than September 1. Once satisfactory documentation of the prerequisites has been met, the student will be enrolled in the course. Kirkwood Community College provides programs for many facets of the food service industry. Students receive Kirkwood certificates of completion for attending all six courses in the 90-hour Food Service Training program. AM Nurse Aide State Skills Testing

This is the written portion of the CNA test. To register for the written exam, call 319-398-1022 or 1-800-332-8833. After registration, please call the Test Center at 319-398-5456 to schedule an appointment date and time for your exam. You will need to register separately for the skills exam, and must successfully pass both the written and skills tests with a 70 percent or greater score to be placed on the Iowa Direct Care Workers Registry. You will have two hours to complete this part of the exam.

If you have a documented learning disability and would like to receive accommodations, please contact Learning Services at 319-398-5574 two weeks prior to the scheduled test date. Advanced Cardiac Life Support This 12-hour program reviews emergency cardiac care according to the American Heart Association ACLS guidelines. Participants will work in a relaxed small group environment, working through case studies and simulating skills on manikins. Two-year recommended renewal. Materials fee $40 included in cost of class.

Objectives: 1) Recognize and initiate early management of periarrest conditions that may result in cardiac arrest or complicate resuscitation outcome, 2) Demonstrate proficiency in providing BLS care, including prioritizing chest compressions and integrating use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), 3) Recognize and manage respiratory arrest, 4) Recognize and manage cardiac arrest until termination of resuscitation or transfer of care, including immediate post-cardiac arrest care, 5) Recognize and initiate early management of acute coronary syndromes (ACS), including appropriate disposition, 6) Recognize and initiate early management of stroke, including appropriate disposition, and 7) Demonstrate effective communication as a member or leader of a resuscitation team and recognize the impact of team dynamics on overall team performance.

CEUs: 1.14 Nurses. Nursing CEUs approved through the Iowa Board of Nursing, provider #30. 100 percent attendance required for CE credit.

Pediatric First Aid The Heartsaver Pediatric First Aid course is designed to meet the regulatory and credentialed training requirements for child care workers in all 50 states. This course teaches basic first aid, CPR and AED skills for children, such as what to do when a child or infant has a breathing problem, how to give compressions and breaths to an infant or child, and how to stop bleeding that can be seen.

Pre-register by calling Kirkwood Community College, 319-398-1022 or toll-free 800-3328833, between 8 am and 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday. The college accepts Discover, MasterCard or Visa, please have your card number ready. You may also register online at www.kirkwood.edu/ce for most classes.

Classes begin promptly at the time designated.

Students should sign in 20-30 minutes ahead of the designated start time. Please dress for fluctuation in room temperature. Please have your professional license number with you. Be advised, children are not allowed in classes due to liability concerns. If attending with a child, you will be asked to leave and your tuition will not be refunded.

Cancellation: Kirkwood Community College has the option to cancel a class if minimum enrollment is not met. Refunds will be automatic.

Weather cancellations: The decision to cancel Continuing Education classes will be made by 6:30 am for daytime classes and by 3:30 pm for evening classes. If the media outlets announce that Kirkwood Community College is closed, all Kirkwood locations are closed. If your class is held at a public school that has closed for the day and canceled all activities, Continuing Education classes offered at that location are canceled. If your class is held at a private business, please contact the business directly for the current status of the class.

CEUs: Continuing Education Credits (CEUs/ CEHs) will be granted by Kirkwood Community College. As an organization accredited to offer continuing education, Kirkwood Community College verifies that these courses meet the continuing education criteria for nursing and allied health professionals. CE certificates will be awarded by Kirkwood upon attendance of all sessions of a program and/or class. Partial CEUs will not be awarded; 100 percent attendance is required for CE credit. A fee of $15 will be charged for replacement of lost certificates.

A course evaluation will be available upon program completion.

Course tuition includes CEU/course completion certificates (with 100 percent attendance) and any handouts provided by the instructor.
